Billed as “a coming of Rage story”, this undead comedy-horror is directed by Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin) and scripted by Diablo Cody, making a return to the teen girl horror genre after her 2009 cult hit Jennifer’s Body. As befits a film involving various dismembered body parts, Lisa Frankenstein is occasionally patchy and clumsily put together, but the witty script and fun performances carry it through.
Set in 1989, the film centres on Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), who’s still withdrawn after witnessing her mother’s butchering during a home invasion by an axe murderer. Meanwhile, her taciturn father (Joe Chrest) has moved on and remarried, meaning that Lisa now has both an evil stepmother (Carla Gugino) and a popular, kind-hearted, but not too bright sister-in-law, Taffy (Liza Soberano).

Kathryn Newton is inevitably one of the best actresses of this generation. Yet, her recent onscreen performances aren’t quite catching fire at box offices the same way they did before. Just like how her Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) managed to gross almost thrice its budget, her recent Ant-Man 3 failed to land the mark and ended with a disappointing box office run.
Kathryn Newton in The Society
As it seems, that losing box-office streak of hers isn’t dying down easily. This comes after her most recent movie Lisa Frankenstein suffered a devastating blow at the worldwide box office to end its run with a gross even less than its budget. Despite this, her fans still have high hopes for this film, even predicting that it would go on to become a cult classic following its release on streaming.

If only Mary Shelley could've lived to see a Frankenstein story with a twist quite like this one. Horror fans have been waiting quite some time for writer Diablo Cody to get another kick at the horror can after 2009's "Jennifer's Body," the Megan Fox-starring flick that's taken on the air of a genuine cult classic after initially bombing among critics and audiences alike. For Millennials of a certain age, time has been kind to the unabashedly feminist story of a demon possessing a high school student and developing a taste for male flesh (as one does), and now the time has come for everyone to offer up a long-overdue mea culpa. Luckily, this year's release of the hilariously offbeat "Lisa Frankenstein" feels like the perfect opportunity to do just that.

[This story contains graphic spoilers for Lisa Frankenstein.]
If Lisa Frankenstein is any indication, we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Liza Soberano in years to come.
At the age of 10, the Filipino-American actor moved from Visalia, Calif. to Manila, the capital of the Philippines, and she found countrywide success at the age of 16 for her romantic drama series, Forevermore. Soberano has continued to enjoy success as an actor, model and spokesperson, but her American roots kept calling for her to try her hand at forging an acting career in the States.
In the summer of 2022, Soberano finally took the plunge by sending off a self-tape for a key supporting role in Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams’ Lisa Frankenstein, and within a week, she was on the New Orleans set of her first American movie. She plays the eponymous Lisa’s (Kathryn Newton) outgoing stepsister, Taffy, who’s also a pageant girl and popular cheerleader with a dash of duplicity.

Jennifer’s Body writer Diablo Cody returned to horror over the weekend with the theatrical release of horror-comedy Lisa Frankenstein, directed by Zelda Williams and starring Kathryn Newton (Freaky) and Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”). While the film may go on to become a cult favorite, it unfortunately didn’t make much of a splash in its opening weekend.
Lisa Frankenstein scared up just $3.8 million in its theatrical debut here in the United States, with Focus Features giving the film a massive wide release in 3,144 total theaters.
The production budget for Zelda Williams’ Lisa Frankenstein was a reported $13 million, so the film has quite a long way to go before it starts turning a profit for Focus Features.
The film is currently “rotten” on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a 49% Tomatometer score. The good news? The film’s audience score is much higher at 82% fresh.

This week brings four new horror movies to the table, and they’re all releasing on the same day. That should make this Friday feel like Friday the 13th… even if it’s actually Friday the 9th.
Here’s all the new horror releasing on February 9, 2024!

First up, Stone Age horrors will be unleashed in Out of Darkness, which had previously been titled The Origin. Bleecker Street brings the film to theaters on Friday, February 9.
We’ve been told, “It’s a tense, emotional, and incredibly crafted film; so much creativity went into making the paleolithic world – including the entire language spoken in the film, which was created specifically for this by a linguist and an archaeologist.”

If your idea of a laugh riot is a high-school dreamboat being separated from his penis by an axe while treacly ‘80s classic “On the Wings of Love” soars on the soundtrack, then Lisa Frankenstein might be for you. So long as your frame of reference doesn’t go as far back as Edward Scissorhands. Diablo Cody’s screenplay about a maladjusted teen who finds a sense of purpose by bonding with a reanimated corpse delivers enough funny lines to make you want to cut it some slack for a minute. But Zelda Williams’ clunky direction soon stifles that good will as this retro-minded horror-comedy-romance lurches from scene to scene without ever building much steam.

The tropes of horror comedy go back a long way; the genre probably dates to “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein,” released in 1948, with a few electro-roots in “The Bride of Frankenstein.” Yet the good ones all share something: a combo of flavors — scary and funny, violent and knockabout — that’s bold and tart and bracingly blended. A good horror comedy is a genre smoothie that wakes you right up.
But then there’s “Lisa Frankenstein,” a horror-com smoothie made mostly of ancient, moldy fruit. At this point, what a movie like this one tends to have going against it is the sheer past-the-sell-by-date creakiness of a genre that has now spent too many decades placing monsters and zombies in a so-normal-it’s-wicked high-camp setting. The original ghoulie sitcoms, “The Munsters” and “The Addams Family,” are 60 years old. “Young Frankenstein” is 50 years old. Even monster cereals like Count Chocula and Franken...

Pity poor Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton), and not just for the unfortunate name. Her mother was murdered by an ax-wielding serial killer; Lisa was in the house, hiding in a backroom when it happened. Dad (Joe Chrest) remarried soon after, which meant that Lisa suddenly found herself spending her senior year at a new high school, living in a new house in a new city. Her brand new stepsister, Taffy (Liza Soberano), is a cheerleader, a Miss Hawaiian Tropic pageant winner, and an oracle of awful advice for her socially-awkward sibling.

The story of a shy teenage girl who comes out of her shell after raising the boy of her dreams from the dead sounds like a job for the Tim Burton of yore. And yet, Lisa Frankenstein’s strengths are so specific to a weirdo female gaze that even the certified freak who made Beetlejuice would’ve failed to deliver on the potential of this film’s premise.
Diablo Cody’s script—operating on the same wicked, smirking wavelength as her now-cult classic Jennifer’s Body—is absolutely fearless in chasing the darkest implications of this story to its bitter end. The film gleefully lets its body count—in both the homicidal and sexual sense of the term, sometimes in the same scene—add up in gruesome, macabre fashion.
Getting there, though, is somewhat rough. Just as Lisa (Kathryn Newton) can’t seem to connect with the world around her at first,...

15 years ago Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama joined forced to deliver "Jennifer's Body," a genuine cult classic that went from mismarketed box office failure maligned by critics who didn't understand its brilliance, to the reclaimed favorite that became one of the selling points in the marketing for "Lisa Frankenstein." Cody returns to the teen horror comedy space alongside Zelda Williams (in her feature directorial debut) with a zany, heartfelt, and unapologetically odd story about a particularly peculiar high school outcast named Lisa (Kathryn Newton) who goes on a murderous adventure with the reanimated corpse of a young man — whose grave she hangs out at — in search of new limbs, a sense of autonomy, and maybe even love.
Set against the backdrop of the candy-coated neon bubblegum of the 1980s, "Lisa Frankenstein" makes no qualms about being for weirdos, and by weirdos. It's the resulting lovechild of a raucous orgy between "Edward Scissorhands,...

The box office is very much in need of saving right now. January was pretty rough, with only the likes of "Mean Girls" and "The Beekeeper" there to keep theaters afloat. February is looking even more bleak as holdovers from December of last year are finally starting to taper off and "Argylle" underperformed somewhat. So, what (if anything) is coming to the rescue for movie theaters in desperate need of something new to show? "Lisa Frankenstein" is next up to bat and, at least right now, it looks unlikely to score a home run. That said, it may deliver a solid enough single, to expand upon the baseball metaphor here.
Serving as the feature directorial debut of Zelda Williams, "Lisa Frankenstein" is a horror-comedy from Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody ("Juno"). It has two promising young stars leading the way: Kathryn Newton ("Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania") and Cole Sprouse ("Riverdale"). In short,...

We’re celebrating the theatrical release of horror-comedy Lisa Frankenstein with #1989Week all week long here on Bloody Disgusting, and the wait for the movie is almost over.
Directed by Zelda Williams and written by Diablo Jody, Lisa Frankenstein will dig up someone special in movie theaters nationwide on February 9.
To whet your appetite, Diablo Cody has presented us with a hugely interesting revelation this week: Lisa Frankenstein takes place in the same world as Jennifer’s Body?!
“I am just declaring that this movie takes place in the same universe,” Cody tells Deadline. “I have decided that. I will not say that you’d see any overt references to that but I’m saying it.”
On a related note, Cody recently told Bloody Disgusting that she’s “not done” with the world of Jennifer’s Body. And if she has her way, she’ll be writing a sequel at some point soon.

Writer/Producer Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) and director Zelda Williams have teamed up to deliver an outrageously ’80s new spin on Mary Shelley’s classic novel with Lisa Frankenstein, set to arrive in theaters on February 9, 2024. Ahead of the film’s release, Bloody Disgusting spoke with Cody and Williams about their collaboration.
In Lisa Frankenstein, “Set in 1989, the film follows an unpopular high schooler who accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams using the broken tanning bed in her garage.”
The Coming of Rage love story stars Kathryn Newton (Freaky), Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”), Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher), Liza Soberano (Alone/Together), Joe Chrest (Stranger Things) and Henry Eikenberry (The Crowded Room).
The comedy-horror movie draws from quintessential ’80s cinema, including Weird Science, Beetlejuice, and Night of the Comet. But that...

This Friday, February 9th, the ’80s horror-comedy Lisa Frankenstein stomps into theaters just in time for Valentine’s Day. In anticipation, Bloody Disgusting is dialing the clock back to 1989 with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year.
A crossroads year, 1989 saw the highs of the decade reach new lows across storied franchises, all while hinting at a future that was both wonderful and strange. Both new filmmakers and sub-genres emerged from the graves. It was dawn and dusk all at once.
Today, writer Alex Divincenzo kicks off 1989 Week by examining how movie maniacs such as Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, and Jason Voorhees were circling their own caskets. Read his essay here and stay tuned for more themed editorials and lists.

I was already sold on checking out the horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein, since it marks the feature directorial debut of Zelda Williams and was scripted by Diablo Cody, but now a clip from the film has arrived online to give me an even more positive outlook on the movie. The clip can be seen in the embed above, and what makes me so happy about it is the fact that the 1985 classic Day of the Dead, one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite filmmakers (George A. Romero) is quickly glimpsed on a television in this scene. A comedic creature chase follows, but it’s the glimpse of Day of the Dead that I really love about the clip.

"She's slaying, He's decaying." Arriving in theaters for Valentine's Day. Focus Features has unveiled their main official trailer for a dark horror comedy titled Lisa Frankenstein. The first teaser from last October was pretty good, this full trailer is even better with more jokes. This is from a new script written by Diablo Cody, directed by the newcomer Zelda Williams. Set in 1989, an unpopular high school girl named Lisa accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm and starts to rebuild him into the man of her dreams by using the broken tanning bed in her garage. Yet another spunky new take on Frankenstein, after Birth/Rebirth and The Angry Black Girl & Her Monster last year. Kathryn Newton co-stars as Lisa, with Cole Sprouse as her monster, plus Carla Gugino, Liza Soberano, Joe Chrest, and Henry Eikenberry. This looks like wicked, twisted fun! I really dig the neon colors and vintage vibe.

Forgive us for being wholly unable to name our favorite part of the “Lisa Frankenstein” Get Excited for This Film Starter Pack. Is it the basic logline? Is it the talent behind the camera? Is it the talent in front of the camera (Kathryn Newton as the titular Lisa! Cole Sprouse as her monster!)?
Maybe it’s just the punny title? Screw it, it’s everything, ideally sewn together into one delightful and unexpected package. In the film’s first full trailer, candy-colored ’80s flair is on full display, plus some winning lines from Newton and Sprouse giving an unexpectedly full-bodied performance as the seemingly voice-less creature. It’s cute, we promise!
