Crystal Finn, who played Lauren Pawson in the Season 4 “America Decides” episode of “Succession,” is the latest victim in a series of bizarre otter attacks in Northern California.
Finn, who also has a role in Pamela Adlon’s upcoming directorial debut, was swimming in the Feather River near Plumas National Forest in July, she told the San Francisco Chronicle on Wednesday.
“I felt something on my back side and on my leg,” she recalled. “I started looking around and yelling out and [the otters] popped up right in front of me. Then they dove down and started going at me again.”
She said: “I could see the bites on my legs and knew I had been bitten on my butt — that one was the worst, but I couldn’t see it. The bites really hurt.”
She suspected that the attack might have been a mother protecting her offspring.

The American Theatre Critics Association (Atca) announced that “Good Night, Oscar” by Doug Wright is a finalist for their 2023 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/Atca New Play Award. This prize honors plays which had their professional premiere outside of New York City, with this new work debuting at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago this past spring. With one awards body already giving their stamp of approval, is “Good Night, Oscar” headed for a Tony nomination for Best Play?
This new work will open on Broadway on April 24, just days before the eligibility window closes for the 2023 Tony Awards. The story is set in 1958 on the set of “The Tonight Show” hosted by Jack Parr. The host has booked his most coveted guest: the witty talk show staple Oscar Levant. “I’m bringing all of myself to this play,” explains Enrico Colantoni of the new Broadway show “Birthday Candles.” A veteran of TV series like “Just Shoot Me” and “Veronica Mars,” this moving script from Noah Haidle marks the actor’s Broadway debut. The journey he goes on each night has allowed him to stop worrying whether everything looks “right” and instead, “just play.” “This play has allowed me to stop trying to be a good actor,” says Colantoni. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Colantoni plays Kenneth, a man who pines for Debra Messing’s Ernestine for the majority of their lives. Indeed, the audience bears witness to the majority of their lives as the actors age from idealistic teenagers to elderly sweethearts in the span of 90 minutes.

Almost a decade after her Broadway debut, Emmy-winner Debra Messing has returned to the New York stage in new play “Birthday Candles,” which taps into her gifts of comedy and sentimentality. The first play by Noah Haidle to hit Broadway, “Birthday Candles” centers on Messing’s character Ernestine and unspools over nearly a century, as scenes focus on her ritual of baking a cake on her birthday over the course of her lifetime, chronicling her joys and losses. The Roundabout Theatre Company production, which also boasts John Earl Jelks, Enrico Colantoni, and others, opened at the American Airlines Theatre on April 10 under the direction of Vivienne Benesch.
This new drama received a divided reception from critics, who thought the grand aspirations of the work felt a touch under-baked. In a positive notice, Chris Jones (Chicago Tribune) calls the show “wonderful,” “wise and sad.” Touting the sophistication of Haidle’s ideas,...

Birthday Candles, Noah Haidle’s Broadway dramedy starring Debra Messing as a woman who, over the course of the play’s 90 minutes ages from 17 to 107, has just about all the right ingredients for the poignant, funny and life-affirming experience it sets out to be. If everything doesn’t always come together just as it should, well, even an imperfect cake is better than no cake at all.
Opening tonight at the American Airlines Theatre, the Roundabout Theatre Company production of Birthday Candles casts the always likable Messing, having already won us over from her years on Will & Grace, as Ernestine, whom we first meet on her 17th birthday as she joins her mother in a yearly tradition of cake-baking.
“Eggs, butter, sugar, salt,” says mother Alice, reciting a little speech that itself will become part of Ernestine’s lifetime birthday tradition. “The humblest ingredients. But when you turn back and look far enough,...

As of now, there is a lot of uncertainty around Covid when it comes to Broadway. Within the past couple of months, several shows had to suspend performances due to positive cases in their casts, some others had to close permanently, and a couple more are taking hiatuses. The American Theatre Wing also hasn’t announced key dates for this year’s Tony Awards yet.
With that being said, we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tonys? Below is an overview of each play as well as the awards histories of their authors, cast, and directors, plus the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

Broadway’s Roundabout Theatre Company has unveiled its post-shutdown production schedule, with both the much-anticipated revival of Caroline, Or Change starring Sharon D Clarke and the Broadway debut of Alice Childress’ 1955 play Trouble in Mind both beginning previews in October.
Birthday Candles, Noah Haidle’s new play starring Debra Messing, will begin previews in March, and the previously announced revival of 1776 will bow in fall 2022.
The Roundabout lineup was announced by Todd Haimes, Artistic Director/CEO.
In addition to the not-for-profit’s Broadway lineup, Roundabout also announced scheduling for its Off Broadway slate: Mansa Ra’s …what the end will be and Dave Harris’ Exception to the Rule (both April 2022) and Anna Ziegler’s The Wanderers (July 2022).

The curtain’s inching up on the Tony Awards: A ceremony will be held on an as-yet-undetermined date in coordination with Broadway’s eventual reopening, but voters will finally be able to make their selections beginning March 1, Tony organizers tell Deadline.
Nominees for the 74th Annual Tony Awards were announced last October, with the 18 eligible productions reflecting the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season (the count usually numbers in the 30s). The 2020 Tony ceremony and CBS broadcast had originally been set for June 7 at New York’s Radio City Musical Hall, but of course was scuttled due to the Covid shutdown.
The voting period will run from March 1 to March 15. Although Broadway remains officially closed until June, most insiders don’t expect any stagings before fall at the earliest, with timing contingent on widespread Covid-19 vaccinations.

The Broadway revival of the Tony Kushner-Jeanine Tesori musical Caroline, or Change and the New York premiere of Noah Haidle’s Birthday Candles starring Debra Messing are the latest productions to announce postponements until 2021, and they’ll be joined on the Roundabout Theatre Company line-up with the Broadway debut of Alice Childress’ 1955 play Trouble in Mind, to directed by Charles Randolph-Wright.
The postponements – plans to open both Caroline, Or Change and Birthday Candles this Spring were scuttled by Broadway’s Covid-19 shutdown – follow this week’s announcements that The Music Man, Flying Over Sunset, American Buffalo and The Minutes are now targeting Spring 2021 premieres. Birthday Candles, with Messing, will open in Fall 2021.
“With the ongoing uncertainty of the pandemic and with concern for our artists, staff, and audiences, we have determined that we will not be able to reopen our theaters this fall,” said Roundabout Artistic Director/CEO Todd Haimes.

Welcome to the most wide open Tony Awards season in recent memory. It was a first for this critic. Outside the theater, I looked up at a poster advertising the play. The ad’s type was dominated by a critic’s quote: “If Thornton Wilder had dropped acid, he might have written ‘Smokefall.'” There was no name after the quote, but it was from a publication I used to write for. I had to wonder, who wrote it? Then I realized that I wrote it. I’d completely forgotten having seen and reviewed Noah Haidle’s “Smokefall” at South Coast Rep three years ago. I had not intended that big quote on the poster to.

The 'I'm getting too old for this s**t' action hero card should be played with caution. We've seen it work this year for Arnie in The Last Stand, and backfire horribly for Bruce Willis's worn-out John McClane, so it's hard to know how excited to be at the prospect of Al Pacino and Christopher Walken playing former mobsters out to relive their glory days. On the one hand, it's hard to see how you could go wrong with that pairing. On the other, the last film to star Pacino and Walken was 2003's Gigli, so this could really go either way.
One of Pacino's best performances remains his tragicomic turn as Donnie Brasco's aging, increasingly ineffectual Lefty Ruggiero, and more than a decade on he brings the same wounded,...

Embarrassment sets in after roughly 15 minutes of Stand Up Guys, not so much for its stars, Al Pacino and Christopher Walken, going through the motions of hacky jokes about how good the old days were. Instead, the kind of awkward feeling this film inspires is reserved for the way you may feel about your grandparents or your uncle when they’re called upon to pontificate on modern society, so they can tell you how they feel about the rap music or the Google or something along those lines. Pacino, Walken, and Alan Arkin, the supposed titular characters, have all proven in the past their brilliance as performers. Whatever nostalgia you may have, and hope that their uniting here will bear enjoyable fruit, will be dampened soon enough.
Pacino is Val, who’s just ended a 28-year stint in prison.

Stand Up Guys stars Christopher Walken and Al Pacino in a comedy about geriatric mobsters with nothing new to say about geriatrics or mobsters. Nothing funny either which, considering our national goodwill these days toward all characters Sopranos-inspired and these two actors in particular, is quite a feat. While it breezes by at a brisk 94 minutes, Stand Up Guys has a sketchy, underwritten script so it expects to just coast along on the charisma of its two stars, and while they have it in spades, they can only overcome so much deficit on presence alone. Stand Up Guys takes place throughout one night and opens with Val (Pacino) being released from prison after taking the fall for a caper gone wrong 28 years earlier and refusing to rat out his gang. His best friend Doc (Walken) is there to pick him up and Val is soon made aware that powerful crime...

I spent the night before I saw Stand Up Guys working, for about seven hours non-stop, on the massive bibliography for an upcoming film-based book I will soon be publishing. One effect of this monotonous academic endurance run was that I became extremely familiar with various citation forms for films, and spent much of the night pondering why writers are not commonly part of such reference formats. I fully appreciate the difficulty in pinpointing what, exactly, a film citation should look like, given that movies are rarely created with the level of authorial precision a book enjoys, but ignoring the writer seems, in most cases, like a fairly large gap in the cinematic equation.
Case in point: Stand Up Guys is a bad-to-mediocre movie filled with praise-worthy elements that fails almost entirely by virtue of its tedious screenplay. Al Pacino and Christopher Walken give excellent Al Pacino and Christopher Walken performances.

You know what the Academy loves? Old people. You know who it's largely made up of? Old people. Give them an elderly person emoting and they'll hand out an Oscar nod, particularly if it's a legendary actor who is beloved and has been kicking around for a while. And when your movie stars Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin, why not see if these guys can generate a bit of awards season heat? That's just what Lionsgate is doing with "Stand Up Guys," as they are giving the movie a New York and Los Angeles run starting on December 14th. Penned by Noah Haidle and directed by Fisher Stevens, the story follows two friends and lifelong criminals, one of whom has been hired to kill his friend. But they go out for a night on the town instead and of course there are laughs, hijinx and emotions as these...

Tough but touching action comedy Stand Up Guys recently debuted its trailer which has been followed with some unseen stills and we’ve been keeping a very close eye on which very much looks like a Last Hoorah for the screen legends.
In all seriousness, there’s nothing quite like the simple old school movie poster to get you excited about a movie.
Well, the new hit man comedy starring Christopher Walken, Al Pacino and Alan Arkin, three of the most recognizable vet thesp working today with Fisher Stevens (producer of The Cove) directing from a script by Noah Haidle.
Lionsgate is giving Stand Up Guys a December awards-qualifying run, prior to hitting nationwide on January 11th, 2012.
Val (Pacino) has been freshly released from a long stint in prison. He took the fall for his associates, but is out and welcomed back by old pal Doc (Walken). They quickly hook back up with another friend,...

It's obvious we love cool posters and slick design work here on Fs.net. We feature work from Mondo (like this awesome Dredd poster) and other artists all the time, and there's nothing quite like an amazing piece of film artwork to get you pumped up about a movie. Sometimes the amateur pieces are even better than the official studio posters, as was the case with Battleship earlier this year. But sometimes the studios get 'em right. Here's a new official poster (via IMPAwards) for Stand Up Guys, the new hit man comedy starring Christopher Walken, Al Pacino and Alan Arkin, which I actually like more than the film's trailer itself. We just go our first look at the action comedy Stand Up Guys following Al Pacino and Christopher Walken in the story of two aging criminals, one of whom has been hired to kill his friend. In one last night of debacuhery, they hit up a brothel, steal cars, evade the police but must also face choices they've made over the years. Now we have the first trailer for the film from director Fisher Stevens, and it looks like this could be a nice little dark comedy with some heart, especially when Alan Arkin shows up. Pacino hasn't really been on top of his game as of late, so maybe this will redeem the veteran actor a bit. Watch the trailer! Here's the first trailer for Fisher Stevens Stand Up Guys originally from Yahoo: Fisher Stevens (producer of The Cove) directs Stand Up Guys from a script by Noah Haidle.

If "The Expendables 2" didn't meet your fill of Old Guys Doing Things, then let us recycle an old joke and introduce you to the Depends-ables (Get It?). Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin are up to no good in the first trailer for "Stand Up Guys," which once again finds some elderly dudes doing wacky stuff. Penned by Noah Haidle, the story follows two friends and lifelong criminals, one of whom has been hired to kill his friend who just got out of the joint. They have one last night of fun hitting up a brothel, doing drugs, stealing cars and dodging police but it seems they are also going to learn Life Lessons. It's from the producer of "Million Dollar Baby" for whatever that's worth, and is directed by Fisher Stevens ("Crazy Love," "Just A Kiss"). This looks pretty terrible, though just being able to watch Pacino,...
