Comedian Martin Lawrence has played several iconic characters in movies like the Bad Boy franchise and his own sitcom Martin. But one of his most famous roles seemed to remind fans of a character Tyler Perry made popular.

Of all of Lawrence’s characters, his Big Momma’s House role might be one of his most well-known. In the 2000 feature and its sequel, Lawrence played an FBI agent who disguised himself as an old woman to capture a criminal. Over the years, a very similar character in Tyler Perry’s Madea emerged. Like Lawrence’s Big Momma’s role, Perry played a woman in her twilight years who taught life lessons to the younger generation.
In an interview with 60 Minutes, Perry once explained that his Madea character was inspired by his own family members.

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Here’s everything we know about Beverly Hills Cop 4!

Robert Downey Jr. plays Australian actor Kirk Lazarus in his Oscar-nominated role in Tropic Thunder. Downey Jr.’s Lazarus takes the extreme step in Method acting and undergoes pigmentation alteration surgery to play an African-American man. The role was clearly a satire that mocked the extreme lengths some actors were willing to go to for a role. Downey Jr.’s co-star in the film, Danny McBride, revealed how the actor stayed in character the whole time.

Tropic Thunder is one of those meta-films that have a lot going on right under the surface. With a cast of actors who were really committed to the bit of the film, including Robert Downey Jr. Downey was deep in his character for the time the film was being filmed, and nothing shows that more than the particular song that he made up for doing his business.

Before the cameras began rolling on "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley," the celebrated comedy franchise had struggled to find a way to continue its story. Attempts to get a fourth "Beverly Hills Cop" film off the ground spanned decades and several scripts, with it only materializing only recently thanks to Netflix. While we will eventually see Eddie Murphy's classic character return to the screen, we can't up but think about all the other variations of how his story could continue.
One of these variations involved him handing over the reins to his son, Aaron. This was the premise of a proposed television show to air on CBS, which received a pilot order in 2013. Unfortunately, while a pilot was shot, "Beverly Hills Cop" never materialized as a show. However, it might not be for the reason you expected. Take it from Murphy himself, who spoke about it with IndieWire back...

Disney+ is now deep into the production of the Percy Jackson TV series, adapting the beloved works of author Rick Riordan, centered on the son of Poesidon. Of course, this isn’t the first time that the adventures of Jackson and his campmates have made it to the screen, but there are some strong indications that this time around, the adaptation is going to be far more faithful to what was on the page. After all, those initial movies certainly didn’t quite live up to expectations, nor did they launch the franchise they were perhaps intended to.

In the teaser, which debuted at the D23 Expo on Saturday, we get a look at Walker Scobell (“The Adam Project”) as the Lightning Thief himself.
“I didn’t want to be a Half Blood. Being a Half Blood is dangerous,” Percy laments as the camera pans over snippets of Camp Half Blood. He warns that, if you also sense you might be different, it might be best to ignore the signs.
“Once you know what you are, you’ll sense it too, and they’ll come for you,” he says ominously before the clip cuts to a closeup of his face as lightning crackles around him.

It’s now or never for everyone’s favorite depressed and toxic talking horse on Netflix. While “BoJack Horseman” has been hailed by critics and garnered a loyal fan base, the program is still without an Emmy win. Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmys presentation will be the show’s last chance to secure a victory for Best Animated Program as the series concluded in January. It scored its first nomination in the category last year. While many were predicting it to prevail, the honor ended up going to “The Simpsons.” In order to prevail, the show’s going to have to beat back the challenges from three previous winners and another Netflix show seeking its first win.

It’s now or never for “BoJack Horseman” to win the Best Animated Series Emmy, and there’s no better representative than the penultimate episode, “The View from Halfway Down.” This summary statement, about titular horse BoJack (Will Arnett) encountering everyone who’s died in the series at a dinner party, forces him to confront the reasons behind his substance abuse and bad behavior. Rather than a dream, the surreal episode turns out to be a near-death experience, with BoJack apparently drowning in his swimming pool, making good on the prophetic image in the main titles.
For director Amy Winfrey, who oversaw 21 episodes throughout the six seasons, “The View from Halfway Down” was a particularly satisfying conclusion. Banana Split
Stars: Hannah Marks, Dylan Sprouse, Liana Liberato, Luke Spencer Roberts, Meagan Kimberly Smith, Haley Ramm, Jessica Hecht, Addison Reike, Jacob Batalon | Written by Hannah Marks, Joey Power | Directed by Benjamin Kasulke
April (Hannah Marks) has spent the last two years of high school in a relationship with Nick (Dylan Sprouse), from first frantic make-out session to final tear-stained breakup. In the aimless summer between graduation and college, the newly single April mends her heartbreak by striking up an unexpected friendship with an unlikely candidate: Nick’s new girlfriend, Clara (Liana Liberato).
With an oddball title like Banana Split I was expecting a quirky, just as oddball rom-com. However what you actually get is a touchy tale of two women who should be enemies, after all they’ve both dated and slept with the same guy, but instead find a common bond that leads to a sweet, tender platonic...

Percy Jackson is coming back to the screen. We Got This Covered has heard from our sources – the same ones who said an Aladdin sequel was in development and that Ewan McGregor was returning as Obi-Wan, both of which we now know to be true – that a TV series based on the bestselling books by author Rick Riordan is in early development. Unlike the movie franchise though – which consists of 2010’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and 2013’s Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters – the intention is to faithfully adapt all five novels in The Olympians series. Season 1 would tackle the first, season 2 the second and so on.
What’s more, we’ve been informed that the show, likely to be on Disney Plus, will probably star young unknown actors of around 12 years of age. This is also in contrast to the movies, which featured Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario...

Tom Cruise may have surprised fans at Comic-Con with the first trailer to his upcoming Top Gun sequel, but it was another movie in his illustrious catalog that Conan O’Brien asked about when Cruise appeared on the comedian’s talk show Thursday night.
In the episode, which was broadcast from the annual entertainment convention, O’Brien, 56, asked Cruise to step back into the shoes of Les Grossman — the skeevy studio executive Cruise played over a decade ago in 2008’s Tropic Thunder.
The actor, 57, was happy to oblige, showing off some of Grossman’s infamous dance moves.

Tom Cruise isn’t known for comedy, but he does have it on his resume. Tonight on Conan, he resurrected his Tropic Thunder character Les Grossman’s dance moves and colorful language.
Cruise is making the rounds after a surprise appearance at Comic-Con today, but decided to focus in his Conan segment on comedy, a lesser-known aspect of his talents.
The 2008 action-comedy Tropic Thunder, directed and starring Ben Stiller, featured Cruise along with Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson as a group of actors making a Vietnam War film. The prima donnas are dropped in the middle of a jungle and have to use their acting skills to survive.
One of the memorable moments was from Cruise, who received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture for his efforts in the film.

Lea Thompson, the veteran actress who has directed her own daughter in her first feature, said on Thursday that getting sexually harassed during auditions “was like Kryptonite” – killing her ability to win roles in her younger years.
“I didn’t realize these things were unacceptable and how they kept me down all these years,” she said, speaking at TheWrap’s Power Women Breakfast in San Francisco. “I was in really bad auditions and people would start on me and it would take all my power away to the point where I didn’t get the job. It was like Kryptonite… It was obvious when a director was shopping for a girlfriend.”

The “spectacular” in Lea Thompson’s “The Year of Spectacular Men” is meant to be taken with a grain of salt — or rather, several shots of tequila, which is how Izzy Klein winds up tumbling into bed with dudes who don’t respect her. In an opening montage, the guys tell us who she is: insecure, neurotic, depressive, and “sexy in a goofy Special Olympics way.” They’re jerks. But she convinces herself each one is Prince Charming because she wants her fairy tale happy ending on page one. This un-spectacular recent college grad would rather kiss creeps than fix her flaws, which means the film’s plot is basically hurdling relationships on a treadmill. Izzy’s going nowhere but she’s always about to fall flat on her face. And it’s as exhausting for the audience as it is for her.

Family affairs are often depicted on screen as plot subjects. That’s nothing new. It is, however, rare and unique to see the family dynamic front and center in terms of the creative team. In the case of The Year of Spectacular Men, that’s actually part of its specific charm. Directed by veteran actress Lea Thompson (in her feature debut), it stars and is directed by her daughter Madelyn Deutch. In addition, co-starring with a scene stealing turn is daughter/sibling Zoey Deutch, who we’ve mentioned here is a future A-lister. Opening tomorrow, this movie brings a trio of creative family members together for a charming indie that will leave a smile on your face for sure. The film is an indie romantic comedy/coming of age story. That may sound like one of a million, but the fun tone does help to set it apart a bit.

The time has come to see the “manic pixie dream girl” trope from the other side. We’ve viewed countless depictions of attractively quirky women serving as plot points pushing their male lead counterparts over whatever hump they find themselves struggling to conquer, each a one-dimensional prop used before being discarded or thanked upon figuring out the solution. We don’t catch even a glimpse of their motivations, emotions, or psychology because their identities are non-existent. Whether they remain in the protagonist’s life or not is inconsequential so long as he smiles before the credits roll. We’re to accept his selfishness as endearing, his happiness a success. These women “save” him from despair and yet we only know them through his fetishized projections. Madelyn Deutch has flipped that script.

"There's nothing accidental about any of this." MarVista Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Year of Spectacular Men, a feature film that marks the directorial debut of actress Lea Thompson. The film stars Madelyn Deutch as a young woman fresh out of college navigating the failures of post-college adulthood, ruining relationships with various men she meets. Zoey Deutch, who is the sister of Madelyn, co-stars with a cast including Avan Jogia, Nicholas Braun, Melissa Bolona, Jesse Bradford, Lea Thompson, and Brandon T. Jackson. This looks exactly like it sounds, even about a wannabe actress, but with a twist that a woman can't find the right guy - not that the guy can't find the ideal woman. It looks cute and funny. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Lea Thompson's The Year of Spectacular Men, from YouTube: The story of Izzy Klein (Madelyn Deutch...

For literally years now, I’d been looking forward to seeing Get a Job, the new (or newish, in this case now) film from Dylan Kidd. Last week, after an incredibly long delay/time spent sitting on the shelf, I finally saw the flick, which will be hitting theaters this Friday. I’m thrilled to report that it’s good stuff too, fully underserving of the fate it had been stuck with up until now. Honestly, even if it were terrible, I still don’t understand why it never was released. Director Dylan Kidd was a promising up and coming indie filmmaker, leading man Miles Teller has become a bigger and bigger star, and the supporting cast has the likes of Allison Brie, Bryan Cranston, and especially Anna Kendrick in it. That sounds more like a big time studio comedy than an ignored indie, right? Throw in how timely a...
