Sometimes, a slight bait and switch is a good thing. You’d be forgiven for thinking that Good Boys was going to be nothing but utter filth. Sure, it’s a clear raunch fest, but that’s not the true tale of this film. They’re actually peddling a message here. Filthy as the humor is, it’s all tinged with childhood innocence and, believe it or not, a heart of pure gold. Tweens exist right at the intersection of childhood and the onset of adulthood, so this always had the potential to be funny. Well, it’s damn funny stuff, but actually has a heartwarming message about friendship to help make this far more than just a one trick pony. The film is a comedy about a trio of, you guessed it…good boys, even if they think they’re sometimes bad. Sixth graders Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams...

After launching a standalone app and proprietary web destination for video creators last month, Facebook is unveiling two key tools for this set: a library of thousands of free audio tracks and sound effects dubbed Sound Collection, and a so-called 360 Community Page, which will serve as an educational hub for 360 video creation.
Sound Collection will comprise tracks from established composers and songwriters -- including Kiri Tse, Jim Santi Owen, and Lyle Workman -- as well as various sound effects, noises, and instrumental tracks spanning all genres, the company shared in a blog post. Facebook will own the songs and sounds in the collection, and they will be free and clear for creators to use across Facebook and Instagram. Creators will also be able to follow different artists within Sound Collection to discover new tracks, and browse the entire library by genre, mood, length, and vocals to find the perfect fit.

The first season of Love, the Netflix dramedy series created by Judd Apatow, Paul Rust, and Lesley Arfin and starring Rust and Gillian Jacobs, presents a bittersweet reversal of sitcom conventions while also offering a somewhat rare depiction of Los Angeles as a personality in and of itself. Helping both of those aesthetic aspects along is the score by songwriter Lyle Workman, best known for creating the music for Superbad, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and The 40-Year…...

One of the defining elements of Netflix’s new dramedy/romantic comedy series Love, which debuted on the streaming service February 19, is the music. Not only that played by star and co-creator Paul Rust’s character in the show, but the original score written by Lyle Workman. In this exclusive behind the scenes featurette, Workman talks about how he approached that soundtrack, from the instruments he used to the way he tried to evoke the city of Los Angeles where Love is…...

I spent the night before I saw Stand Up Guys working, for about seven hours non-stop, on the massive bibliography for an upcoming film-based book I will soon be publishing. One effect of this monotonous academic endurance run was that I became extremely familiar with various citation forms for films, and spent much of the night pondering why writers are not commonly part of such reference formats. I fully appreciate the difficulty in pinpointing what, exactly, a film citation should look like, given that movies are rarely created with the level of authorial precision a book enjoys, but ignoring the writer seems, in most cases, like a fairly large gap in the cinematic equation.
Case in point: Stand Up Guys is a bad-to-mediocre movie filled with praise-worthy elements that fails almost entirely by virtue of its tedious screenplay. Al Pacino and Christopher Walken give excellent Al Pacino and Christopher Walken performances.

It may be over ten years since the class of '99 walked the hallways of their high school, but it seems for Stifler, Jim, Michelle and the rest of the gang, the playlist hasn't really changed.
With "American Reunion" headed to theaters in a couple of weeks, details on the official soundtrack (via Film Music Reporter) as well as the full list of songs in the film has dropped, and it's a bit of jump back in time. Oh sure, the party-starting tracks most people expect these days from the interchangeable likes of Cobra Starship, Lmfao and 3Oh!3 feature, but it's the '90s that are here in full force. The Verve Pipe, Semisonic, Lit, Third Eye Blind, Montell Jordan, Boyz II Men, Montell Jordan, 2 Live Crew....it's like we're fifteen all over again. Remember Bic Runga's "Sway"? No? I was actually beginning to believe Cliff Martinez's score for Drive may actually have a shot with all the love it has received in the precursor awards, but last night the Academy announced the list of 97 scores eligible for Best Original Score at the 2012 Oscars and, oops, what do you know, both Drive and Attack the Block didn't make the cut. The only other score I had on my current list of predictions for the category to not make the cut was Howard Shore's music for David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Method. Why? Well, I would assume somewhere inside there the rules for requirement weren't met. As per the Academy, "To be eligible, the original score must be a substantial body of music that serves as original dramatic underscoring, and must be written specifically for the motion picture by the submitting composer. Yesterday the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences released the 97 original film scores that will running for the final five nominations for the Best Original Score category at the upcoming 84h Academy Awards. Billy Crystal will be hosting the annual awards show, which be presented on February 26, 2012. Some how I am not surprised that Attack the Block got nixed, seeing that Tron: Legacy pretty much got the same treatment last year. Glad to see that Henry Jackman’s X-Men: First Class is getting a nod, and of course Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross had to be in it. Check out the full list below.

For Thomas McCarthy’s story about a man and a boy just trying to do the best that they can, Lyle Workman’s score helps keep the quirk in an otherwise heartfelt tale. Workman utilizes elements from strings to horns to create a mood that feels real, while still providing that undertone of inspiration, much like the story itself. Win Win does not shy away from facing the consequences of one’s choices and the score follows suit, adding texture to those moments, but never further dampening the tone.

The golden age of comedy — this new golden age, which will only be apparent years from now, when it’s over — continues with the release of “Get Him to the Greek,” which is so comically fertile and yet so grounded in the reality of its characters that it’s really a kind of Marvel.
There is a quick and simple litmus test to tell whether or not you’ll enjoy Get Him to the Greek. If you found Aldous Snow, Russell Brand’s caricature of a rock star, to be one of the funnier elements of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, then you will no doubt have a riot with the increased raunchiness his character once again brings to the screen for director Nicholas Stoller. If, for whatever reason, you find Brand’s larger-than-life presence to be as insufferable as the real rock stars he’s lampooning, chances are good his spin-off...

In the months leading up to the release of Get Him to the Greek, you might start hearing the songs of Aldous Snow play on the radio. Aldous Snow is the rock star played by Russell Brand in the film and he sings all original music. Lyle Workman composed the music for some of the songs, and he watched from the mezzanine as Brand performed .Bangers, Beans and Mash. at the Greek theater last year.
On Set: Get Him to the Greek
As .Aldous. sang the love ballad, it raised the question: is this a metaphor? .You.d have to ask Jason Segal,. Workman said. .I worked on the musical part of it but I left all the lyrics to him..

First of, have I told you how much I love this film? It's Super-funny! But, the greatest comedies have underlying tones of despair, and the characters in "The Goods" certainly have lots of those, hence, the funnies :happy
Make it the super funnies!
From the folks who gave us "Talladega Nights" and "Stepbrothers," "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" is one of the best comedies of the summer, perhaps the year!
Directed by Neil Brennan from the script by Andy Stock and Rick Stempson, this film ain't a clunker! Paramount has great timing with the whole Cash for Clunkers program.
You'll find a new, perhaps, respect for used car salesman! "The Goods" opens this Friday, Aug. 14th, so don't miss it!
So I attended the press junket for "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" and sat down with the cast. Here they are (click on pictures to see video):...
