Big casting news for Kenneth Branagh.s next directorial effort, Italian Shoes. Anthony Hopkins and Dame Judi Dench reportedly are close to signing on for the lead roles, playing former lovers who work to complete a dying woman.s wish, Variety reports. Branagh's decision to pass on the chance to helm Thor 2 took me by surprise. The filmmaker poured his heart into Asgard.s warrior, crafting a stellar origin story that I.d thought he.d want to explore further. But he admitted in subsequent interviews that he hoped to transition from large-scale superhero epics to a small-scale character drama, and his selection continues to take shape. Adding Hopkins and Dench to this project would be ideal for Branagh, giving the director two incredible talents for his material. Italian Shoes will be adapted by screenwriter Richard Cottan from the Swedish novel by author Henning Mankell. Branagh, who is scheduled...

Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench are in talks for the lead roles in Kenneth Branagh's English-language film adaptation of "Italian Shoes" for Left Bank Pictures and Yellowbird says Variety.
Based on the 2006 novel by Swedish author Henning Mankell, the story follows a retired surgeon living on a remote island in Sweden, who is forced to confront his past mistakes when he's reunited with an old flame.
Richard Cottan adapted the script and Branagh says the project was developed with Hopkins and Dench in mind. Shooting will kick off late next year depending upon the actor's availability.
This territory is very familiar to Branagh as he is currently in northern Sweden producing and starring in the third season of the BBC's "Wallander", the small screen adaptation of Mankell's most famous literary creation.

Kenneth Branagh elected not to pursue the director's gig on Marvel Studios' Thor sequel, and now we know the film he'll make instead. The director will helm Italian Shoes, based on Henning Mankell's meditative novel of the same name. Producing will be the Swedish company Yellow Bird. You might not know that name, but you'll probably recognize the company's logo, as it is tacked on the front of the original The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, as well as on the other two Millennium Trilogy novel adaptations that follow it and the film Headhunters, which played Fantastic Fest and is already set up to be remade. Variety [1] reports that Branagh has the job. It positions the film as a thriller, but while Mankell is a very well-known crime author -- he has sold millions of books featuring a character named Inspector Wallander -- this is a different sort of story.
