Betty Buckley has been staying at the Chateau Marmont for about 50 years. She first checked in when she was filming her big screen debut as gym teacher Miss Collins in “Carrie” and then when she landed the role of Abby Bradford, Dick Van Patten’s new wife and stepmother to his kids in ABC’s 1970s family comedy-drama “Eight Is Enough.”
After half a century calling the Chateau her Los Angeles home — she lives full-time at a ranch outside of Fort Worth, Texas — Buckley has a lot of stories.
“Oh, there are some wild ones,” the 76-year-old actor and singer says while nibbling on a fruit and cheese plate in the hotel’s lobby restaurant on a recent weekday afternoon. She’s in town promoting her new horror movie, “Imaginary.”

Eight Is Enough star Adam Rich died at age 54 in Jan. 2023 from an accidental fentanyl overdose. Rich was found dead in his Brentwood home during a welfare check.
His publicist, Danny Deraney emphasized that Rich did not do recreational drugs. “If there is any silver lining, it’s that our suspicions were correct that it was an accidental overdose from fentanyl and not recreational drugs,” Deraney told E! News after the autopsy results were revealed. “We hope this closes the chapter on any suspicions people had and now the family can have some privacy as we move forward.”
The actor was known for playing the youngest brother Nicholas Bradford in the endearing ABC series about widower Tom Bradford (Dick Van Patten), a columnist with eight children.
Rich starred in the series, beginning at age 8, and essentially “grew up” on the show. But when the series ended in 1981, Rich followed the...

For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.
The Midnight Hour (1985)
Image: The Midnight Club (1985)
Directed by Jack Bender.
The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

A coroner’s investigation into the death of Adam Rich determined the Eight Is Enough child star died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl.
Rich, the former ’70s and ’80s child star best known for his page-boy haircut and role on the ABC dramedy, died five months ago, on Jan. 7, at age 54, and his body was discovered at his Los Angeles residence.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner said in its report that the death was from effects of the powerful opioid. The cause and manner of the child star’s death was ruled an accident.
Rich’s TV credits included The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The City and 3-2-1. But he was best known for his role over five seasons on the ABC dramedy Eight Is Enough, which starred Dick Van Patten, and played Nicholas Bradford beginning at 8 years old. He wrote a book, and ABC turned it into a successful TV series of the same name. So, which Eight Is Enough cast members are still alive?

No details about Rich’s death were available. TMZ was first to report the news, saying the one-time TV star was found “lifeless” at his home in the Los Angeles area. TMZ reported that law enforcement sources indicated there were no signs of criminal or questionable activity.
Rich was a regular throughout the five-season run of “Eight Is Enough,” produced by Lorimar Television. The ABC series starred Dick Van Patten as the widowed father of eight who begins a new relationship with a teacher, played by Betty Buckley.
The series’ original cast included Mark Hamill, just as he was about to break out as part of the cast of 1977’s “Star Wars,” and Diana Hyland, who played...

The "Star Wars" galaxy encompasses a vast array of planets and diverse creatures that continue to be explored in even greater detail in the saga films, every live-action, animated Disney+ series, and extensive reference volumes, comics, and tie-in novels. The cultural ripple effect spread worldwide, inspiring countless parodies and bizarre knock-offs that looked to capitalize off the colossal record success of the original trilogy.
In the late '80s, "Star Wars" was at a crossroads in terms of new content and continued efforts to endlessly merchandise the sci-fi fantasy epic into oblivion. It was a ripe time for a proper parody, and luckily one of the great satirists of the 20th century had enough clout and enough jokes to get it done. When Mel Brooks came out with "Spaceballs" in 1987, it had been four years since "Return of the Jedi" ended the original trilogy and three years since the made-for-tv...

In a 1987 behind-the-scenes video, "Spaceballs" writer and director Mel Brooks referred to his comedy as an "appreciation of the human event." In that same interview, however, he admits that his humor can also skew toward the disgusting. After all, this was the man who filmed what might be the longest scene of human flatulence in film history. When it came time to satirize "Star Wars," Brooks was equally impish, making a fourth-wall-breaking classic farce full of slapstick ridiculousness and no small amount of blue humor.
"Spaceballs" starred Bill Pullman as a Han Solo-like rogue named Lone Star who is tasked by the benevolent King Roland (Dick Van Patten) with retrieving the runaway Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga). The film takes Lone Star, Vespa, the dog-man Barf (John Candy), and the android Dot on an adventure fleeing the evil Spaceball empire led by the wicked Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis). Clint Eastwood proves again that he Owns the western genre with this odd tale of land reform insurrection and establishment blowback, in New Mexico of 1906. To direct the script by the great Elmore Leonard, Eastwood brought in the western movie legend John Sturges. But Sturges discovered that collaboration now meant acceding to whatever the star wanted. The beautifully filmed movie falls apart even though Sturges saved the day with an 11th hour stunt action climax.

Eight is Enough was a TV sitcom featuring a family, the Bradford’s, that have eight children in a full household. Dick Van Patten and Diana Hyland played the roles of the parents. One can just imagine what kind of household this would have been in real life and some might even have a few insights on this since the family and the show were modeled after a real-life journalist that had eight children. The show ran for five seasons and went off the air in 1981 after a somewhat mediocre run. It wasn’t the most popular of shows but it

There’s an in between zone that parents often look for if they’re easing their kids into horror. If they’re fans of the genre themselves, the urge to take the tykes from Scooby-Doo to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is very tempting. I was one of the fortunate ones who was allowed to cut out the middleman and dive right into the heady stuff. So it was then that I missed out on a great bridge between the two extremes, The Midnight Hour (1985), ABC’s successful bid to get the Thriller-crazy crowd on their side.
Originally airing November 1st as part of The ABC Friday Night Movie (really? There was no Thursday slot open to make it for Halloween?), The Midnight Hour fought off CBS’ Dallas for its first half and NBC’s Miami Vice for the back, but those shows weren’t the ideal demographic anyway – this...
