Matthew Mishory is directing, with Stone Canyon’s Bradford Schlei and Alvaro Fernandez producing, and executive producers Marc Bennett and Rhino Films’ Stephen Nemeth. Filming is set to begin in Israel and in Austin, Texas in the first quarter of the year for a 2022 release. Fall 2019 provided us with a massively budgeted 35mm feature in the form of J.J. Abrams’s The Rise of Skywalker (shot by Dan Mindel and colored by Stefan Sonnenfeld at finishing house Company 3) and a surprisingly visible A24 mid-budget art film in the Safdie brothers’s Uncut Gems (shot by Darius Khondji and colored by Damien van der Cruyssen at The Mill). In each case, the choice to shoot on celluloid was rooted in what could be termed (charitably) as a nod to film history or (uncharitably) a nostalgic gesture. Deepwater Horizon..
Disaster film Deepwater Horizon, from Summit Entertainment and Participant Media, has been in cinemas for four weeks..Aussie visual effects and animation company Iloura, part of the Deluxe group, is behind many of the action sequences in the film, having been brought on to add realism with digital mud, fire and smoke.
Approximately 125 Iloura artists, from across both Sydney and Melbourne studios, worked on the film.
The Iloura team was led by VFX supervisor Jason Billington, who collaborated closely with lead vendor Industrial Light & Magic (Ilm) and VFX supervisor Craig Hammack.
Iloura.s most significant contribution to Deepwater Horizon was creating the massive engine explosion that ignites the rig fire. When workers hit a methane pocket while drilling for oil, the gas travels up the pipes and fills the engine room, seeping into the engine, which ultimately explodes.
To achieve dramatic impact, Iloura designed and created a full CG engine interior.

A feature film may not be moving forward yet, but Hatchet III director Bj McDonnell teamed up with Machinima to create a live-action version of the trailer.
For those that weren’t aware, Lionsgate acquired rights to produce a Dead Island movie back in 2011. We haven’t heard anything since, but this may draw a bit more interest to the project. Here are details from the original announcement:

Paramount Insurge has made plans to develop a low-budget sci-fi tale called Equinox , says a story at The Hollywood Reporter . Simon Boyes and Adam Mason, the pair behind the upcoming Not Safe For Work , will provide the screenplay. The plot of Equinox has not been officially revealed, but the trade likens the story to a outer space version of Phillip Noye's 1989 thriller Dead Calm . Bryan Brucks and Stefan Sonnenfeld will prodice with Sarah Perlman Bremner executive producing.

[1] Hailee Steinfeld, Dave Franco, and Deborah Ann Woll have been offered the leads in Rosaline, a retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet that's told from the perspective of the girl Romeo ditches to be with Juliet. Michael Sucsy is directing from a script by by (500) Days of Summer writers Scott Neustader and Michael H. Weber, which in turn is an adaptation of Rebecca Serle's forthcoming debut novel When You Were Mine. The comedy will use modern-day dialogue in a 16th-century Verona setting. Woll would play the title character, while Franco and Steinfeld could play Romeo and Juliet, respectively. If Steinfeld signs on it'll be her second time playing the iconic character, as she's also lined up to play Juliet [2] for Carlo Carlei's more straightforward adaptation. Much as I like Steinfeld, her casting here strikes me as a bit off since she's eleven years younger than Woll and Franco --...

Anyone who doubts a director making the leap from commercials to features only needs to think of people like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Mark Romanek, Michel Gondry, and Duncan Jones. All of them worked in the medium before (and some after) breaking into helming motion pictures; just because you’re making something that’s 30 seconds doesn’t mean you lack the talent to make a great film.
I bring this up because of Deadline‘s report that Nicolai Fuglsig has been hired by Paramount to direct Brass Monkey, a “real-time kinetic thriller” based on his own idea of following “a killing spree in Los Angeles.” A first draft, written by Paolo Marinou-Blanco, is currently getting the rewrite treatment from Brian Horiuchi. More after the break. Dead Island positions the player as a vacationer on an island paradise, when their peace is interrupted by a zombie invasion. The video game released this month for XBox 360 and PlayStation 3 to rave reviews and huge sales. Lionsgate announced today that they have come to an agreement with developers Deep Silver to make the Dead Island movie that has been threatened ever since that infamous trailer hit in February and set the Internet alight with buzz.

However Deep Silver were quick to say that talk was premature and they were ready to turn down frantic offers back then;

Dead Island had been one of this fall's most anticipated video game releases. An incendiary trailer commanded a lot of attention from the online press, but when the game was released earlier this month, the critics weren't so happy. Poor zombie AI, weird gameplay mechanics and boring moments deflated the buzz balloon for Dead Island as a game -- but not so much for a possible movie.
Lionsgate has acquired the movie rights for Dead Island, and it sounds like they were impressed by the trailer more than the game's reviews. "Like the hundreds of journalists and millions of fans who were so passionate and vocal about the Dead Island trailer, we too were awestruck, said Joe Drake, the co-coo of Lionsgate. "This is exactly the type of property we're looking to adapt at Lionsgate - it's sophisticated, edgy, and a true elevation of a genre that we know and love.

After a fairly interesting and lengthy bidding war, Lionsgate has won the rights to make a movie off of the recently released video game Dead Island, and have released a statement about the film's production.
Back in February of this year, the cinematic and powerful trailer for Dead Island was released. The internet quickly exploded and websites all over (for both games and movies) were quick to show it off. It was haunting, filled with emotion, story and altogether took people by surprise. It was incredibly well done, and I've yet to see any other trailer move me in such a way.
The game released earlier this month and to everyone's surprise, the trailer had very little to do with the story of the game. Reviews for the game so far have been fairly mixed with fans and haters on both sides. That's not stopping Lionsgate.

Earlier this year, Deep Sliver’s Dead Island game trailer exploded onto the internet and started a rumor that a film would be produced. However those rumors were quickly debunked and the game went on to be released later in the year. Now Lionsgate has purchased the rights for Dead Island.
The Dead Island’s trailer told the story of a family on vacation at a tropical resort who is besieged by zombies and is known for its non-linear storytelling, bloody scenes, cinematic score and beautifully rendered graphics.
Dead Island’s trailer was rather incredible for all the reasons mentioned above and a million views in its first day is a tribute to the quality, style, and storytelling. But I have not played the game so I don’t know how much of it will play a factor in the film.

Remember when the internet went batsh*t crazy over the announcement trailer for the Dead Island zombie videogame? Soon after movie rights were apparently picked up, but that proved to be false. Lionsgate has now officially announced that they have optioned the rights and have entered the “early development stage” with producers attached. The Mummy producer Sean Daniel plans to oversee the production and the below press release states the film will “focus on human emotion, family ties and non-linear storytelling.”
I’ve also embedded the previous much-buzzed-about trailer below and although it seems like the game came and gone without the same level of buzz, this could prove to be a fun property. With Marc Forster‘s World War Z coming out next year and likely dealing with the same themes as above, it will be interesting to see if this one is necessary, or simply feels like a repeat.

Well I think we all saw this one coming. After releasing a promo trailer earlier this year that created all kinds of buzz online, the zombie-themed video game Dead Island hit stores a couple of weeks ago and reportedly sold more than 1 million copies in the first few days. I think it's safe to say that the marketing was a huge success even though it didn't accurately reflect the gameplay, and the game is definitely a hit despite lukewarm reviews. Now this week we have confirmation that the video game is also about to make the jump to the big screen as well. But will the movie be based on the actual game or on that initial trailer that attracted so much attention? According to Deadline, the Dead Island movie has landed at Lionsgate after a bidding war and a bit of a dispute over who originally owned the rights.
