Though his personal tragedies and demons have sometimes overshadowed his work, there’s no denying the impact Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski has had on cinema.
Born in 1933 in Paris and raised in Poland, Polanski’s childhood was marked by tragedy when he was separated from his parents during the Holocaust. As a child, he escaped the Krakow ghetto after his mother was killed in an Auschwitz gas chamber. When the war ended, he was reunited with his father and returned home.
He turned to filmmaking as a student, making his directorial debut with the international hit “Knife in the Water” (1962), which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His followup, the psychological thriller “Repulsion” (1965), was an even bigger hit, and he was soon drafted by Hollywood to direct the occult horror film “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968), which earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay bid.

Leslie Van Houten was released on parole after 53 years in prison for committing murders as part of the Mason family cult.
Van Houten was recommended for parole multiple times but was denied by the California governor. She is now set to be on parole for a maximum of three years, but after one year she will be reviewed for parole dischargement.
Van Housten first met Charles Manson when she was 19 years old and became a follower of his cult, the “Manson family.”
She was serving seven years to life after murdering Leno Labianca, a supermarket exec, and Rosemary, his wife, in their home in Los Angeles.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has stated he will not challenge the court’s parole decision but disproves it.

Leslie Van Houten, who served more than 50 years in prison on murder and conspiracy convictions in the Charles Manson “family” 1969 killings of Rosemary and Leno Labianca that shocked Hollywood and the nation, was released from a California prison today, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
The Cdcr said in a statement that the 73-year-old Van Houten was released “to parole supervision.” Van Houten reportedly was taken to a transitional housing facility.
“Van Houten will have a three-year maximum parole term with a parole discharge review occurring after one year,” according to Cdcr. “For safety and security reasons, Cdcr does not provide information on a person’s time or location of parole release.”
The release comes four days after Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said it would no longer challenge the parole. A state appeals court in May rejected Newsom’s most recent of three parole rejections.

It didn’t take all that long for Emile Hirsch to establish himself as one of the most competent young actors in Hollywood. Breaking through with The Girl Next Door before moving on to a remarkable lead in Into the Wild, the vastly underappreciated Speed Racer, a wonderful supporting turn in Milk, and playing Mario (we think…) in Prince Avalanche. And then the 2015 Sundance Film Festival rolled around…
Emile Hirsch was at Sundance with his movie Ten Thousand Saints – but proved to be anything but one, physically assaulting then-Paramount executive Dani Bernfeld (she’s now president of creative at Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity) and later pleading guilty to aggravated assault, spending just over two weeks in prison, paying nearly $5,000 to his victim and entering rehab. The rehab stems from a serious alcohol problem Hirsch had at the time, which he says played a significant role in the event.

Valerie Perrine has a knack for cheating death.
At 25, Perrine — best known for playing Miss Teschmacher, girlfriend to Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor in 1978’s Superman — was working in Las Vegas as a topless dancer in the Lido de Paris revue at the Stardust Hotel.
She met a charming guy in the lounge who said he was a hairstylist to the stars. They began dating. He invited Perrine to an intimate dinner party in L.A.’s Benedict Canyon. She found an understudy, but the understudy fell ill, and Perrine was forced to perform.
The party she missed would go down in infamy: It was the one in which the Manson Family slaughtered six people, including Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring — Perrine’s new hairstylist boyfriend.
Then, when she was 32, having shot to movie stardom as a thinking-woman’s bombshell, she boarded a small plane to the San Sebastian Film Festival.

"Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" may not be the longest Quentin Tarantino movie, but it definitely isn't the shortest. Clocking in at 161 minutes, Tarantino's most recent film, released in 2019, broke the mold of what's expected from the filmmaker. The movie was less concerned about the plot and more interested in romanticizing late 1960s Hollywood, bathing in the atmosphere of the bygone era. Between the buddy dynamics of Rick Dalton (Leonardo Dicaprio) and Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) are an eclectic cast of characters representative of the period, especially Margot Robbie's earnest and heartbreaking portrayal of Sharon Tate.
Despite the runtime, a lot still ended up on the cutting room floor. With these cuts came the absence of certain characters and storylines, including an appearance by long-time Tarantino collaborator Tim Roth. The actor first worked with Tarantino on his directorial debut "Reservoir Dogs" in an incredible performance as Mr.

I must have at least 7 home video releases of John Sturges’ classic, starting from VHS, but they’ve come up with a good reason to return: a 4K transfer with color and contrast grading that to me better represents the movie. The thrilling, not-too-violent escapades of Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, James Garner, David McCallum, James Coburn, Charles Bronson & James Donald are no longer timed so that everything looks like a washed-out high noon: both the 4th of July and much of the mad-dash escape scramble are meant to take place near the crack of dawn. In this case ‘Much darker’ is much richer; faces don’t get blown out. And I do see more detail in the enhanced image. So here we go again, happily.

As the news media put it so dismissively in headlines after the Manson Family murders, actress Sharon Tate was murdered along with “four others.” Those “others” were in fact Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, Steven Parent and Jay Sebring. The latter is the subject of the documentary Jay Sebring….Cutting to the Truth, directed by Anthony Dimaria. The filmmaker is Sebring’s nephew, adding a deeply personal and heartfelt patina to a film that seeks to expand the portrait of his uncle beyond being a tragic victim in one of the most sensationalized crimes of the 20th century.

There was much curiosity on the part of audiences last summer when it came to every real-life person, event, and location portrayed in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. While much of the discussion was focused on Sharon Tate, as played by Margot Robbie, this fall, a new documentary on another Manson Family victim, Jay Sebring, will arrive.
Jay Sebring….Cutting To The Truth, directed by Sebring’s nephew, Anthony Dimaria, takes a look at the celebrity hairstylist’s life beyond the headlines of being a life cut short and his great influence on a generation of Hollywood stars, from Marlon Brando to Bruce Lee.
Ahead of a September release, the first trailer has arrived, featuring interviews with Quincy Jones, Robert Wagner, Dennis Hopper, Dominick Dunne, and even Quentin Tarantino, who cast Emile Hirsch to play Sebring in his latest film.
See the trailer below with a hat tip to MovieBox.

It would probably not be fair to call Jay Sebring “forgotten.” After all, the ‘60s Hollywood stylist was so popular that he served as an inspiration for “Shampoo,” the 1975 satire directed by Hal Ashby and starring Warren Beatty. But in the grander context of the Charles Manson murders – where so many individuals have adopted a larger-than-life persona over the decades – Sebring’s legacy does feel somewhat muted in comparison.

"He was forgotten... He was erased..." Shout Factory has debuted a trailer for an indie documentary titled Jay Sebring....Cutting to the Truth, which premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival earlier this year and at the Phoenix Film Festival as well. This fascinating, in-depth look at the legacy of revolutionary sixties Hollywood trendsetter Jay Sebring follows his meteoric rise as a cultural icon and his untimely murder at the hands of the Manson family. The biopic doc "is an illuminating portrait of Sebring, the long-forgotten artist, designer, and entrepreneur who created a billion-dollar Men's hair & fashion industry and defined iconic Hollywood styles for men. The documentary traces Sebring’s life from his humble Michigan roots to his meteoric rise as a groundbreaking trendsetter and further examines the facts and myth leading up to the fateful night." The film is all from the perspective of his cousin, trying to figure out who his uncle really was.

Updated, 12:01 Pm: Epix said today that Helter Skelter: An American Myth will premiere at 10 p.m. Sunday, July 26. Read details of the docuseries below.
Previously, June 4: Helter Skelter: An American Myth, a six-part docuseries about Charles Manson exec produced by Greg Berlanti, has been pushed back by Epix.
The series was previously planned to debut on June 14 and the MGM-owned network has not yet set a replacement date.
Deadline understands the network didn’t feel it was an appropriate time to release the series given the subject matter – Charles Manson planned to incite a race war called Helter Skelter.
The series comes 50 years after the murder of Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojtek Frykowski and Steven Parent and Manson’s subsequent trial. It will chronicle the Manson Family history, featuring never-before-accessed interviews from former family members and journalists first on the scene and in the courtroom, with archival footage and newly-unearthed images.

In his latest book about Hollywood, author Sam Wasson uses interviews and books — such as autobiography “Roman by Polanski” — to craft a novelistic tale about the making of the iconic 1974 movie “Chinatown.” The first chapter, “Justice,” starts off with the romance between actress Sharon Tate and young director Roman Polanski, as he casts her in his 1967 film, “The Fearless Vampire Killers.” Our excerpt (slightly edited for length) is below.
Duty was her pattern. She was a smiler, an actress.
Sharon signed with Ransohoff at nineteen. Dutifully, she faced Hollywood with professional dedication, taking courses in singing, dancing, and acting, the latter with Jeff Corey in the fall of 1963. “An incredibly beautiful girl,” Corey reflected, “but a fragmented personality.” Self-disclosure was a problem, so Corey one day put a stick in her hand and demanded, “Hit me, do something, show emotion!” Beauty was not enough. And she knew she wouldn’t be beautiful forever.

Hollywood", actor Brad Pitt who plays movie stunt double, bodyguard 'Cliff Booth' in the film, is open to reprising his character for an extended episode, 'streaming mini-series', featuring new content and character backstories:
"...I look at a mini-series where you can spend much more time on characters and story and explore angles you don't always get to do in films", said Pitt.
"So much of these films end up on the cutting room floor because they just don't fit in that box.
"That's why I think it's interesting that Tarantino previously took 'Hateful Eight' and ostensibly repurposed it as a three-part series. It's almost the best of both worlds.
"You have the cinema experience that exists, but you can actually put more content into the series format."

Quentin Tarantino might only have one more film left to direct, as he’s adamant about retiring after helming his 10th feature film. Still, that doesn’t mean he’s against releasing extended director’s cuts of his existing movies. During a recent discussion with Collider following a screening of his ninth and most recent feature, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” the director confirmed that a four-hour cut of the film was on its way at some point in the future. Tarantino’s first assembly cut of “Hollywood” ran four hours and 20 minutes. The film’s theatrical cut, released last summer by Sony Pictures, clocked in at just over two hours and 40 minutes.
“It’s all good. It’s all great,” Tarantino said about the four-hour “Hollywood” cut. “I don’t know if an audience would sit for it, but I love it. So we showed it to [Sony [us]Sony...

Shortly after Sony opened Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” in theaters nationwide this summer, rumors circulated the writer-director was thinking about putting back in the footage he removed from the film’s theatrical cut and releasing an extended version of “Hollywood” as a Netflix miniseries. Tarantino did just that with “The Hateful Eight” earlier this year. Would “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” be next? It turns out the rumor is true, at least according to Brad Pitt. The actor confirmed with New York Times carpetbagger Kyle Buchanan that Tarantino has discussed the idea. Pitt says “it’s a pretty arousing idea.”

Roman Polanski celebrates his 86th birthday on August 18, 2019. Though his personal tragedies and demons have sometimes overshadowed his work, there’s no denying the impact this Oscar-winning director has had on cinema. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
His followup, the psychological thriller “Repulsion” (1965), was an even bigger hit, and he...

Actress Sharon Tate was only 26 years old when her life and career were tragically cut short in one of the most brutal murders in Hollywood history. On Aug. 8, 1969, the stunning Valley of the Dolls star - who was married to film director Roman Polanski and eight and a half months pregnant with their son - was spending time with friends at 10050 Cielo Drive, the secluded home she and Roman shared in La's Benedict Canyon. Roman was off in London filming The Day of the Dolphin, so he asked their close pals Wojciech Frykowski and Folger's Coffee heiress Abigail Folger to stay at the house with his pregnant wife until he flew back to La on Aug. 12. The trio had dinner at Sharon's favorite restaurant, El Coyote, along with celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring. They returned to the house around 10:30 p.m.

Oxygen’s “Manson: The Women” features four of Charles Manson’s female followers, some of who feel regret for the murders of Sharon Tate and her friends 50 years ago, while others don’t quite feel the same empathy.
The special includes interviews with Catherine Louise “Gypsy” Share, Sandra “Blue” Good, Dianne “Snake” Lake (who was 14 when she joined the Family) and Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme (who is also known for attempting to assassinate President Gerald Ford in 1975). None of these women were directly involved with the Tate-labianca murders, but were all sent to prison for other reasons and for a variety of lengths — Share, for example, served five years for armed robbery.
The four women talk about their impression of Charlie, whom they all deemed charming and capable of making someone feel special, what their life was like before and during their time as a Manson Family member, and what happened shortly after Manson,...

Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood hit movie theaters last week to critical acclaim. The film — starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie as the late Sharon Tate — follows Charles Manson and his followers leading up to their two-day killing spree in 1969.

Steve McQueen, one of Hollywood’s iconic leading men, narrowly avoided murder at the hands of Manson Family members the night of Sharon Tate’s death.
The actor, who died in 1980 at the age of 50, was meant to attend a dinner with his friend, hairdresser Jay Sebring, at the home of Tate in 1969.
McQueen’s former wife, Neile Adams, who was married to him at the time, told the National Post in 2017 the actor was only saved when he “ran into a chickie and decided to go off with her instead.”
“Going off with that girl saved his life,” Adams said.
