Warning: this Inside No. 9 review contains spoilers.
Alfred Hitchcock and co. needed just shy of two hours for Rear Window; Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and director Al Campbell nailed their version in under 29 minutes and got a great gag in at the end.
Inside No. 9 perfection? I’d argue so. Show me one second wasted in this expertly constructed half hour. From Larry’s “best to use a brick” introduction, all the way to the Netflix punchline, this was pretty unassailable storytelling. It had comedy, tension, surprise, very decent guest stars and a formal experiment that was no gimmick, but integral to the story’s suburban satire.
Less Rear Window than Front Door, “Mulberry Close” was told almost entirely through the static frame of a video doorbell. Val and Damon (Vinette Robinson and Shearsmith) were newcomers to the close, having just moved into No. 9 next door to Larry...

Danny Dyer stars alongside creator and writer Ryan Sampson in Mr Bigstuff, and here’s the trailer for the new sitcom.
Danny Dyer may be better known these days as Mick Carter in EastEnders, but before that, he’d been a steady presence in British film for over two decades, from his debut in Justin Kerrigan’s Human Traffic through The Football Factory and Severance.
The one thing Dyer had never done was lead a sitcom – until now. Mr Bigstuff is created and written by Ryan Sampson, who’s perhaps best known for starring alongside Nicholas Lyndhurst and Celia Imrie in BBC sitcom After You’ve Gone, and for co-starring in ITV2 sitcom Plebs.
The synopsis, per the British Comedy Guide, reads as follows:
Mr Bigstuff explores broken families, fragile masculinity and carpet sales. It tells the story of two estranged brothers; Glen (Ryan Sampson), a nervy perfectionist striving to live...

"We don't run from our problems." Sky TV has revealed an official UK trailer for a comedy series titled Mr. Bigstuff, arriving to watch in the UK starting this July (though no US launch yet). The series stars actor Danny Dyer, best known for his various "tough guy" roles like Moff in Human Traffic, Tommy Johnson in The Football Factory, and Mick Carter in Eastenders. When two estranged brothers Glen (Ryan Sampson) and Lee (Danny Dyer) find themselves under one roof in "idyllic" suburbia, their lives start to unravel faster than a cheap carpet. Glen is a nervy perfectionist and carpet salesman striving to live a suburban ideal and Lee is an alpha male with a prescription drug addiction and a tin full of their dad's ashes. Written & created by Ryan Sampson, this "relatable, irreverent comedy about brotherhood, manhood and carpet sales" is set in Essex. Also with Harriet Webb,...

It may have been mere months since Taskmaster series 15 ended, but the brand-new series 16 feels like it’s arrived at just the right time, giving us a chance to escape endlessly depressing talk of the latest celebrity criminal revelations and our world leaders’ somewhat “lalala can’t hear you” approach to climate change.
There’s a lot to live up to after the excellent last series, but Taskmaster series 16 has a promising line-up that fits the show’s tried-and-tested dysfunctional family dynamic. The ‘mum and dad’ figures of Julian Clary and Sue Perkins are joined by three distinctive ‘kids’: the ditsy persona of Lucy Beaumont, the intelligent fun of Susan Wokoma… and Sam Campbell, who is completely bonkers.
Although he’s probably the least UK-famous of this batch of contestants right now, he’s got serious comedy chops, winning the top prize at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022 and appearing in some great sitcoms.

The bicycle-riding, houseboat-inhabiting dyslexic detective inspector that Adrian Scarborough plays in the crime drama The Chelsea Detective has caught on with the locals of the upscale London neighborhood where the series is set and shot. He encountered some while filming Season 2 — but not at the most opportune moment. “People came up to me and said, ‘Oh, Chelsea Detective, we thought it was marvelous,’” he recalls. “And I’m standing there going, ‘Yes, I’m terribly sorry, but the camera is over there rolling.’” Joining Scarborough’s Max Arnold to help solve the district’s murders is Vanessa Emme as Layla Walsh, his plucky new detective sergeant. It’s a partnership marked by trust and alive with banter. “It took us about 48 hours to get one another’s sense of humor,” the actor says. “Then it was plain sailing.” Their cases: the killing of an art gallery manager, a death at a retirement home,...

Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.

The 85-year-old Stoppard is a strong contender to pick up his fifth Tony for his latest (and perhaps final) play “Leopoldstadt.” The acclaimed drama revolves around a wealthy Jewish family who had fled the programs in Eastern Europe and settled in Vienna. In an interview, Stoppard noted that the play “took a year to write but the gestation was much longer. Quite a lot of it is personal to me but I made it a Viennese family so that it wouldn’t seem to be about me. “ Stoppard, who was born in Czechoslovakia in 1937, lost all four of his grandparents in the Holocaust.

Augusta (Eloise Webb) fell hard for Edward Denham (Jack Fox) in Sanditon Season 3. So hard, in fact, that in episode 4 of the PBS drama, she decided to defy her uncle and elope with the town’s most notorious rake, much to the horror of her family and friends. In episode 5, Charlotte (Rose Williams) and Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes) race to find Augusta before she ends up married to a man they suspect is only after her fortune. But do they catch up with the couple in time?

One of the world’s greatest living playwrights has returned to Broadway. Over a decade since his last effort, Tom Stoppard has come back with epic play “Leopoldstadt,” a sprawling family drama based in part on his own family’s history during the early-twentieth century. The drama opened at the Longacre Theatre on Oct. 2.
Unspooling over five decades, the play follows the Jewish Merz family and their many relations as the antisemitism of the Holocaust penetrates their bourgeois home in Vienna. Directed by two-time Tony nominee Patrick Marber, “Leopoldstadt” boasts a cast of nearly three dozen, led by David Krumholtz, Caissie Levy, and Brandon Uranowitz.
Stoppard’s latest received near-universal raves from critics. In his Critic’s Pick review, Jesse Green (New York Times) calls the play “harrowing” and says it features the dramatist’s “trademark bravura” and “kaleidoscopic technique.” Commending the entire ensemble, he writes, “The acting is excellent across the board,...

It has been a turbulent time for devoted fans of Sanditon, the lush period drama based on the unfinished manuscript by Jane Austen. The first season was a hit, but the show was unduly cancelled, and then suddenly revived, delighting fans and cast alike.
We recently sat down with some of the cast to talk about their time on the show, the emotional roller coaster of season 2 and what excited them most about their return.
The second series of Sanditon based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel, picks up the action nine months after the first season, as the town grows in popularity, and features characters familiar and new.

Acorn TV is home to some of the most addictive mystery series around, and its latest offering, The Chelsea Detective, is a lot of fun if you're looking for cases with a clear beginning, middle, and end.
The Adrian Scarborough and Sonita Henry-fronted series spans four episodes that clock in at around 90 minutes each.
In essence, it feels like four distinctly different movies, and it's all thanks to the variety of the cases.
There's something for everyone sprinkled in.
The series follows the conventions of your typical murder mystery, but that's not a bad thing.
Sometimes, it's good to be familiar with the format, and part of the fun here is in constructing a list of suspects and motives to see if you're right or wrong.
Who doesn't love being an armchair detective?
On the surface, Scarborough's Max and Henry's Priya could not be more different, but it becomes...

The Chelsea Detective is a thrilling new drama series, and it's available to stream today on Acorn TV.
It stars Adrian Scarborough and Sonita Henry as detectives investigating crimes in London.
TV Fanatic got the chance to speak with Scarborough and Henry ahead of the launch.
Check out the interview below.
What attracted you both to The Chelsea Detective?
Adrian: The checklist was pretty comprehensive. He rides a bicycle, which I ride, I love riding bikes, and I ride mine all over London, so that was quite useful. I thought it's been quite a long time since you saw a bobby on a bicycle in a British television series.
That's not happened for a while. I love the idea of him sort of being on this little island of a houseboat, and I liked the fact that he's melancholic, that he plays the piano, that he's sort of a bit...

Earlier this month, Disney made the official announcement that Artemis Fowl, the feature film adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s bestselling middle grade novel, would be debuting on Disney+ rather than in theaters. Now, we have a release date…
Artemis Fowl will hit Disney+ on June 12th, which is not so different from its planned May 29th cinema release date. For the uninitiated, Artemis Fowl is the story of 12-year-old genius, um, Artemis Fowl, who descends from a long and proud line of criminal masterminds. When Artemis’ father goes missing, the young Fowl finds himself in a battle of strength and cunning with a powerful race of fairies, who have kept themselves largely hidden from the human world.
The 2001 book would launch an eight-installment series, so should the film do well (and the Covid-19 pandemic ever end), there is much more material to adapt to future film installments, should Disney want to—though,...

Artemis Fowl is the latest Hollywood film to have its planned rollout changed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. Disney announced today that the adaptation based on the bestselling Eoin Colfer kids fantasy series would be happening not in cinemas, as planned, but on Disney+. The film was set to be released in theaters on May 29th. As of this writing, there was no date for the Disney+ release, but I would imagine it will be sooner rather than later.
We really are living in a new age of movie distribution. Perhaps we were already heading towards more direct-to-streaming big-budget releases, but, if that is true, the “social distancing” restrictions put on all of us in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic has certainly moved up the timetable: Hollywood blockbusters are now debuting not in cinemas, but on subscription streaming services.

With movie theaters closed to hopefully no later than early June, the major studios have a permission slip to test out big pic releases in the home. Now, they’re not so insane that they’ll burn down the house to keep warm. Major movies like Disney’s Mulan and Black Widow which have the potential to do $1 billion at the global box office, thus triggering off a downstream of ancillary riches, aren’t the types of movies you’d debut in the home.
However, in the roll-of-the-die, Dreamworks Animation/Universal’s Trolls World Tour and now Disney’s former post Memorial Day weekend release Artemis Fowl are worthy experiments given how studios’ hands are currently tied in the current frozen theatrical marketplace. Based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared. The “Downton Abbey” effect will be felt at Mipcom, with one of the stars of the show in town to launch her new project, an ITV-Masterpiece period drama, while a number of lavish historical series ready to take the international stage. Buyers looking for thrillers or edgy contemporary dramas will also be in luck, and several shows take on the exploration of race, community or other social issues, often with complex female characters at the fore.

"If we're not clever about this, no one will get to your brother!" Universal has debuted a full-length official trailer for Sam Mendes' war movie 1917, which looks phenomenal so far. We also posted the behind-the-scenes featurette earlier this week showing how they filmed this movie to play out like one non-stop long take. Set during World War I in the year 1917, the movie takes place over the course of one day, following soldiers on a "seemingly impossible mission" to deliver a message across enemy lines to stop an attack that will kill their own soldiers. With cinematography by Roger Deakins. Starring Dean-Charles Chapman and George MacKay, joined by a stellar ensemble cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Teresa Mahoney, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Justin Edwards, Gerran Howell, Anson Boon, and Richard McCabe. I cannot wait to see this! All of the footage looks spectacular – realistic but also riveting,...

"There is no better way to tell this story than with one continuous shot." Ohhhhh hell yes! Another one-shot movie coming up this year. Universal has debuted a fascinating behind-the-scenes featurette for Sam Mendes' new film 1917, set during World War I in the year 1917 - watch the first teaser trailer again. The war movie takes place over the course of one day, following soldiers on a "seemingly impossible mission" to deliver a message across enemy lines to stop an attack that will kill their own soldiers. With cinematography by Roger Deakins, of course. The excellent ensemble cast features: Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, George MacKay, Teresa Mahoney, Dean-Charles Chapman, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Justin Edwards, Gerran Howell, Anson Boon, and Richard McCabe. I love that they release these featurettes now, instead of saving them only for Blu-ray special features, because this looks magnificent. So much movie-making magic being shown!

Sandra Oh is killing it on the awards scene, having scared up four Emmy nominations this year: Best Variety Special (Live) for hosting the Golden Globes, Best Comedy Guest Actress for hosting “Saturday Night Live,” and Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actress for producing and starring in “Killing Eve.” While she has both her comedic and dramatic chops on display as Eve Polatstri in the BBC America drama, the season two closer “You’re Mine,” which Oh has submitted to Emmy voters, is anything but funny for her character.
In this episode, Eve panics when undercover Villanelle (Jodie Comer) mistakenly lets her safe word (“gentleman”) slip during breakfast with the psychotic Aaron Peel (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) after finding out that her former handler Raymond (Adrian Scarborough) is one of his prospective buyers. But Villanelle’s only intention is to lure Eve, who arrives at Peele’s mansion dressed as a...
