Special Mention: The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Directed by Dario Argento
Screenplay by Dario Argento
1970, Italy
Genre: Giallo
One of the most self-assured directorial debuts of the 70’s was Dario Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. Not only was it a breakthrough film for the master of Giallo, but it was also a box office hit and had critics buzzing, regardless if they liked it or not. Although Argento would go on to perfect his craft in later films, The Bird With The Crystal Plumage went a long way in popularizing the Giallo genre and laid the groundwork for later classics like Deep Red. A difficult film to discuss without spoiling many of its most impressive and famous scenes, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is a fairly straightforward murder mystery, albeit with many twists, turns and one of the best surprise endings of all time. But...

Frank Khalfoun’s Maniac is a rare breed: a remake that’s arguably better than the original. That’s not to undermine William Lustig’s version which had to battle being swept under the carpet by the BBFC, rather that Khalfoun’s re-imagining – passed uncut, for the record – benefits somewhat from the timing in which it’s released, a bold shooting style that puts the audience into an uncomfortable position and a terrifying performance from Elijah Wood, who takes over from Joe Spinell as the lead.
Frank (Wood) is a lonely, isolated man who spends his days working in his mother’s abandoned mannequin restoration shop. At night, his serial killer tendencies come to fruition as he roams the streets of downtown Los Angeles, picking on innocent women to murder and slicing off their scalps as a form of keepsake. When he crosses paths with beautiful French art student Anna (Nora Arnedezer), however,...

Elijah Wood returns to the horror genre that we love him for this spring in Maniac, the remake of the 1980 slasher of the same name.
The film debuted at Cannes last year and spent much of 2012 on the festival circuit, building up some very positive buzz ahead of its release this year. We saw a great new UK quad poster earlier in the month, and now Metrodome have released the UK trailer for our viewing pleasure.
“Just when the streets seemed safe, a serial killer with a fetish for scalps is back and on the hunt.
Frank is the withdrawn owner of a mannequin store, but his life changes when young artist Anna appears asking for his help with her new exhibition. As their friendship develops and Frank’s obsession escalates, it becomes clear that she has unleashed a long-repressed compulsion to stalk and kill.”

Remakes seem to be the norm these days, and when you think about it, the early days of cinema had many different versions of the same thing. Take Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde for example, there are so many different film versions from the early days, with different studio’s and countries giving that adaptation a try. So why is it that remakes seems to annoy so many of us now? Mostly I think in the Hollywood system they just seem to be cash grabs, so many are just generic films and it feels like the idea’s have run out.
There are remakes out there however that do it right, take 80’s classics like The Thing and The Fly, those are fantastic remakes. They pay homage to the original, give it a fresh twist and are overall just great films. Now in the 00’s...

Here’s Cannes teaser trailer for Franck Khalfoun‘s remake of 1980s slasher film Maniac and it’s a lot more disturbing than we had ever imagined. This trailer has sort of blown my mind. I think it’s mainly because we get to see Elijah Wood in a very gritty and dark movie for the first time (or for the first time in a long time). Lord of the Rings had it’s dark moments but when you watch this very Nsfw trailer, you’ll see what I mean. It’s also very different to his part in Back to the Future 2 (which I always like to reference) or equally in Happy Feet!
The trailer comes from the Cannes website via our pals at FirstShowing.net and shows Elijah Wood dominating women before killing them in what looks like very harsh ways as he plays the Maniac in Franck Khalfoun’s remake. The original trailer is completely screwed on the Cannes website but thanks to Alex who has spent time sorting it, we’re good to go!

An Elijah Wood-led serial killer film will perk up the ears at a quick rate — but how about one that’s almost entirely in first-person? Since it was announced, I’ve been trying to figure out how and, above all else, why Maniac — a remake of the slimy ’80s horror feature that went by the same name — would implement a technique that feels like a gimmick 99% of the time. It’s not simple enough to conduct simply because it might look “cool,” nor are you guaranteed an interesting result when trying it out in the first place.
The Cannes site (via FirstShowing) has brought our first trailer, and while I still can’t determine if it was the best course of action, I’m still impressed by the dirty atmosphere and seemingly brutal nature of Franck Khalfoun‘s film. Wood, in the meantime, is clearly channeling his work in...

I have scheduled this first part of my Cannes 2012 Preview to publish while I am somewhere over the middle of the United States, on my way to New York where I will connect with a flight heading into Nice. I'll be arriving in Cannes some time around 1 Pm Cet and my third straight journey to the Cannes Film Festival will begin, an experience that has easily become the #1 highlight of my year when it comes to covering movies. As hard as I have to work to cover the festival each year, it is absolutely worth it and based on the selection this year it looks like it will be just as fascinating. To begin, the festival runs from May 16-27, but I will only be in town through the morning of the 24th. As a result, two films that probably would have made my top ten most anticipated movies list won't,...
