He may be on trial for fraud in New York City, but Donald J. Trump has made his presence felt at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival.
The Iranian-born, Denmark-based film director Ali Abbasi debuted his newest movie “The Apprentice” in competition this week, and its number one critic is the former President of the United States and current Republican candidate for this year’s election. In “The Apprentice,” Sebastian Stan stars as the young Trump, with Emmy-winner and current Tony-nominee Jeremy Strong as his mentor, the notorious litigator Roy Cohn. (You can watch the successful Sundance-launched documentary “Where’s My Roy Cohn?” for more about this relationship.)
Following the film’s bow Trump’s legal representative Steven Cheung released a Trump-style statement: “We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers. This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked.

Three films into his feature film career, Brandon Cronenberg has established himself as an innovative and confronting auteur in his own right. When he debuted his 2012 feature debut Antiviral, however, the quality of the film was a secondary topic; first and foremost he was compared to his famous father, David Cronenberg.
There’s a obvious level of cynicism involved whenever a celebrity’s child enters the same field (let’s all agree to bury the term “nepo baby” and move on with our lives). But in the case of Cronenberg junior, there’s an interesting argument to be made about how his father’s work influenced Brandon’s creative approach, and where he’s established himself in his own right.

In 1967, Audrey Hepburn was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Wait Until Dark, a film about a blind woman who becomes the target of three con-men. Due to the character’s impairment, Terence Young’s film – ranked among AFI’s best thrills – becomes a much more anxiety-inducing experience than most thrillers. But what if the star was actually visually impaired? Something not thought of or considered at that time, but Randall Okita’s See for Me, written by Adam Yorke and Tommy Gushue, is one of only a handful of films that allow actors with disabilities to shine – in situations only they could fully understand or convey. Wheelchair user Kiera Allen shows immense strength as she attempts to escape the suffocating clutches of a psychotic mother in Run, giving one of the best performances in 2020. Representation like Allen’s on-screen is barrier-breaking because it shows that those with...

Exclusive: IFC Midnight has acquired U.S. rights to Randall Okita’s Tribeca Film Festival title See For Me, the home invasion chiller that pits a blind house-sitter against three experienced thieves.
The film stars visually impaired actor Skyler Davenport alongside Kim Coates, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Pascal Langdale, Joe Pingue, George Tchortov, Laura Vandervoort and Emily Piggford.
Davenport plays blind former skier Sophie, who accepts a last-minute house-sitting job in a secluded mansion. But she awakes in the middle of the night to find the house under invasion by a group of thieves seeking a hidden safe. Her only means of defense is a new app called “See For Me,” which matches her with a volunteer across the country who uses Sophie’s cell phone to see on her behalf. Stubbornly independent, Sophie is reluctant to accept help until she is connected to Kelly, an Army veteran who spends her days playing first-person shooter games.

"Who can hack a human being?" One more trailer for the indie sci-fi film Anon, written and directed by sci-fi storyteller Andrew Niccol. We posted another trailer earlier this year, and a new international trailer this week already. This new Us trailer from Netflix presents the story entirely differently - about hackers and hacking our augmented reality, and how one of them is getting away with murders by erasing memories. Clive Owen plays a cop investigating a series of unsolved murders, who meets a mysterious hacker woman known as "The Girl" - Amanda Seyfried. This also stars Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian Pigott. This actually looks good, I'm planning to watch once it's available - starting in early May on Netflix. Here's the official Us trailer (+ new Us poster) for Andrew Niccol's Anon, direct from Netflix's YouTube: You can still watch the...

"We can't control what we can't see." Another new international trailer has debuted for the indie sci-fi film Anon, written and directed by sci-fi storyteller Andrew Niccol. We posted another trailer earlier this year, and it still looks very intriguing. The film is about a near-future where there is no privacy or anonymity, where even private memories are recorded in an effort to cut down on crime. Clive Owen plays a cop investigating a series of unsolved murders, who meets a hacker woman known as "The Girl", played by Amanda Seyfried. She has no identity, no history and no record. Also starring Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian Pigott. I'm usually interested in whatever Niccol makes, especially if it's full-on sci-fi, and I'm fascinated by this. That digitized filmmaking style with augmented reality Pov is crazy cool. Check this out. Here's a second international...

"We have an important task for you..." HBO has launched a full-length official trailer for Ramin Bahrani's Fahrenheit 451, a new feature film adaptation of Ray Bradbury's seminal work about a dystopian book-burning future America (which was made into a film in 1966). Oh my does this look good, and frighteningly accurate in relation to what's currently happening in America. This version stars Michael B. Jordan as Guy Montag, a young fireman who struggles with his role as a law enforcer. The full cast includes Michael Shannon, Sofia Boutella, Keir Dullea, Chris Gleason, Martin Donovan, Lilly Singh, Grace Lynn Kung, Joe Pingue, and Sean Jones. I am so, so in for this and can't wait to watch the entire film. Trust in Bahrani! He's a great filmmaker, and I have a good feeling he's made one of his strongest yet with this film. The first trailer for Andrew Niccol's tech thriller Anon has dropped and, as always with Niccol, he's got me intrigued. While his films (Gattaca, Lord of War) don't always turn out to be winners, he continues to explore intriguing sci-fi ideas (ahem, In Time). Anon is set in a Soviet-style near-future where the government is trying to fight crime by eliminating privacy, thus creating total surveillance and de facto self-censorship. A police officer named Sal Frieland (Clive Owen) is doing his best to fight crime in his city but things take a huge turn when he meets a hacker known as "The Girl" (Amanda Seyfried). Anon was also written by Niccol and co-stars Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian...

A room is an enclosed space, no matter how many windows it has. It is a confinement that restricts our world while we are in it. In Room, there are many rooms that restrict the world of Ma (Brie Larson) and Jack (Jacob Tremblay) and some they may not escape…
In Room we meet Jack on his fifth birthday, living in his little world that he was born into. Trapped within the 10-by-10-foot space they are held there by Old Nick (Sean Bridgers). When Ma realises that they have to escape the room, Jack fights it, not believing that the outside world exists. When they finally escape though, they find their biggest battle is surviving a life outside the walls of Room.

‘Maps to the Stars’ trailer and clips: Julianne Moore goes ballistic after losing a role, Robert Pattinson learns that Mia Wasikowska’s parents are brother and sister (photo: Robert Pattinson in ‘Maps to the Stars’) The Hollywood satire Maps to the Stars, the second David Cronenberg-Robert Pattinson collaboration to be screened in competition for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival — following Cosmopolis two years ago — is one of the most anticipated films at the festival for obvious reasons: although an international box office disappointment, the brainy, stream-of-consciousness Cosmopolis earned a number of enthusiastic reviews and was the runner-up (trailing only Leos Carax’s fellow white limo movie Holy Motors) on the list of Best Films of 2012 compiled by the prestigious Cahiers du Cinéma. Check out below the "international" (as in, with French subtitles) red band trailer for Maps to the Stars clip, and you’ll...

Title: Pompeii Directed By: Paul W.S. Anderson Starring: Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Kiefer Sutherland, Sasha Roiz, Jessica Lucas, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jared Harris, Joe Pingue If you were hoping “Pompeii” would ditch the lava in exchange for nonsensical political and romantic melodrama, Paul W.S. Anderson’s latest is for you – and probably only you. “Pompeii” opens with a baby Jon Snow – er, Milo. He thinks he’s all safe and sound, but upon emerging from his hut, finds his town and his parents being massacred at the hands of the Romans lead by Corvus (Kiefer Sutherland). Little Milo manages to escape, but ultimately is thrown into slavery and raised as a [ Read More ]

Yes, this one again includes "A Hero Will Rise" as Part of it's tagline, which Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" did. Score for originality, right? This is the fifth poster for the Paul W.S. Anderson film starring Kit Harington, Kiefer Sutherland, Emily Brownin, Jessica Lucas, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pingue. Frankly, I'm not invested much in the film as it comes from the very same helmer who spewed out those horrible "Resident Evil" films, and "The Three Musketeers" which would likely make Alexandre Dumas roll over in his grave. "Pompeii" hits theaters on February 21st, 2014 and scripted by Lee Scott Batchler, Janet Scott Batchler and Michael Robert Johnson. Set in 79 A.D., the story tells the epic story of Milo (Harington), a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save his true love Cassia (Browning), the beautiful daughter...

It’s the last week of August, and that means the end of the summer movie season is finally here. But as any educated consumer of film can tell you, movies that emphasize spectacle over substance are in no way limited to the summer months. And this week’s Trailer Trashin’ is a great example of this, with our first look at this coming February’s historical action-adventure Pompeii.

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Director/writer: Brandon Cronenberg. Cast: Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Douglas Smith, Joe Pingue, Nicholas Campbell and Malcolm McDowell. Antiviral is the first feature film from Brandon Cronenberg. Brandon takes much of his influence from his father and Canadian director David Cronenberg. Both directors utilize body horror and surreal settings in their horror features. Antiviral is no different. The film is set in a future, celebrity obsessed world, in which citizens will pay to be infected with the virus of their favourite celeb'. Events get even stranger thanks to Karim Hussain's cinematography, which amplifies the film's strong themes of a sick society. Antiviral is a brilliant film from Cronenberg and the story pokes fun at celebrity obsessed culture, in a sly fashion. The story begins with Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones). Syd is a salesman; he sells the infections of celebrities.

The young Cronenberg Offers 'Cold, Clammy' Look at Celebrity Idolatry Gone Amok in the 21st century Antiviral (first released in 2012). Direction and Screenplay by Brandon Cronenberg. Cast: Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Malcolm McDowell, Wendy Crewson, Douglas Smith, Sheila McCarthy, Joe Pingue, and Nicholas Campbell. (Pictured above: Landry Jones holds a celebrity-related specimen in writer-director Cronenberg's film debut. Image via distributor IFC Films / IFC Midnight.) There will come a day, and a blessed day it will be, when we reach the saturation point in our obsession with celebrity. It’s proven a resilient phenomenon, brought on by the Internet’s "24-minute" news cycle, dozens of cable channels needing cheap reality-show talent who’ll do anything for fame and, of course, our tragically misplaced priorities. Oddly enough, one of the very best movies to tackle our fascination with celebrity was released in the pre-Internet era: released in 1983, Martin Scorsese’s The King of Comedy...

Antiviral writer/director Brandon Cronenberg is going to be compared to his father regardless of what work he churns out. This being his debut feature film people will certainly look for the David Cronenberg connection and, in that sense, perhaps it's fitting his first film would in part play on human genetics as Antiviral serves as Exhibit A in proving he is indeed of the Cronenberg clan. Horrific imagery and a mind-bending plot are front and center in a film that didn't entirely work for me, but one that gets Brandon C. off to a good start. Taking place in an unknown future, Antiviral centers its story on celebrity obsession and the sickening levels it has reached. No longer are people satisfied with the TMZ, celeb-in-a-box lifestyle, they want to get closer to their favorite actors and cover models. Now they can. The progeny of filmmakers can often go through rough rides in terms of how they are treated by film fans. With a trailer which basically screams “Cronenbergian (circa 1980′s)” it could be easy to suggest that for his debut, Cronenberg Junior has been rather lazy in his choices. Being a filmmaker and the son of David Cronenberg surely comes with both benefits and pressures; and with that, David’s influence is undoubtedly evident in Brandon Cronenberg’s first feature, Antiviral.
Exploring celebrity obsession, the film is set in an unknown time where people pay to be infected with the same virus celebrities have recently recovered from. As a plot premise this easily slots into David’s cannon of work – his often dubbed “body shock” horrors – and in keeping with many of his sci-fi settings, Brandon’s debut occurs in a morally dubious future, not so far removed from today’s society...allowing for a degree of plausibility throughout.
As a character admits: "I don't think dignity is still valid currency," - perfectly reflecting the murky world of Antiviral. In order to feel closer and more "connected" to celebrities those with enough cash visit The Lucas Clinic (“for the...

In Antiviral, director Brandon Cronenberg has created a world that's just left of reality. Though it's a world filled with technologies that don't exist (yet) and populated with people with desires that don't exist (yet), it's absolutely recognizable and totally believable. And that might be the most disturbing thing about this film.
After premiering at Cannes and playing at the Toronto International Film Festival, Antiviral made its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest, where it's been one of the must-see screenings, with good reason. Cronenberg's debut feature is a mesmerizing speculative thriller filled with arresting imagery and disquieting twists that, yes, at times recall the work of his father, David, but combine to create something different enough to indicate the emergence of an original voice.

As an avid fan of the works of filmmaker David Cronenberg, I found myself fully committed to absorbing the feature film debut from his son, Brandon Cronenberg… for better or for worse. Fortunately, it paid off and I can honestly say that the Cronenberg name is becoming synonymous with daring, experimental film of a high caliber, beyond that of the founding father. Antiviral is a mesmerizing science-fiction film of one possible societal shift of the not-so-distant future.
Whether or not Brandon wishes to admit or acknowledge the influence of his father’s work on his own, this influence is clearly evident in Antiviral. I want only to point this out up front, but will refrain from making this the focus of my case for the film. From the elements of body horror, to the use of a fever dream and even distorted video displays of the human form, the truth lies in the film itself.

Will Brandon Cronenberg, David Cronenberg's son, follow in his father's blood soaked footsteps? The trailer for Antiviral says that indeed he will. The clip shows all sorts of body transformations as Syd March (Caleb Landry Jones) deliberately infects himself with a fatal disease from a famous celebrity. Director: Brandon Cronenberg Writer: Brandon Cronenberg Starring: Caleb Landry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Joe Pingue, Malcolm McDowell, Douglas Smith Antiviral is a one man show. Unfortunately that man is not Brandon Cronenberg, but happily it is Caleb Landry Jones. His performance is more or less a hypnotic monodrama. There is originality in him. His expression is remarkable. He is truly conscious of every single step he takes within the outrageously complex story of Cronenberg's feature debut. Speaking of talent -- the main actor has everything that Cronenberg Junior lacks. By stating this, I am not trying to scratch out his name from the list of young filmmakers worth following. I am just not sure who the new director is and who he would like to be in the future. Antiviral is a critical social commentary on the celebrity culture phenomena. Cronenberg sets the action in the (near?) future at an unnamed location.

There is no doubt that no matter what Brandon Cronenberg decided to make as his first movie, the shadow of his father would loom large. So whether it just runs in the family, or if it was a calculated decision to do something audiences would expect from the Cronenberg mantle, full credit to Brandon for taking body horror to the next level with "Antiviral." While hardly perfect, it delivers the freak fest that fans of David have been missing for the past few years while establishing Brandon as a filmmaker with a bright future.
A constantly glowering, long haired Caleb Landry Jones leads the picture as Syd March, an employee of the Lucas Clinic who trade in a rather bizarre business. In the world of the film, celebrity obsession has jumped a few levels, and Lucas allows clients to inject themselves with the same virus or illness their favorite stars catch.

Drive First Seven Minutes. The first 7 minutes movie clip of Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Drive (2011) stars Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Ron Perlman, and Christina Hendricks. Drive‘s plot synopsis: “A Hollywood stunt driver (Ryan Gosling) who usually keeps to himself and moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him by a local mob boss after a heist that goes wrong.”
We previously posted the Drive (2011) Red Band Movie Trailer and reviewed the film here: Film Review: Drive (2011).
On the first seven minutes of Drive:
This clip doesn’t get into the meat of the plot, but it does offer up a nice taste of Drive‘s considerable charms, including Gosling’s withdrawn lead performance, Bryan Cranston‘s turn as Gosling’s accomplice, the seedy Los Angeles setting, the ’80s-inflected soundtrack, and the delectably tense vibe. Oh, and of course, some actual stunt driving.

Brandon Cronenberg is currently shooting his feature debut 'Antiviral'. And any new sci-fi horror from the genes of a Cronenberg is something to get excited about. I'm interested to see what Brandon, the son of cult director David Cronenberg, can bring to the table and what sort of styles and influences may be adopted by the filmmaker. The first official still from the production has arrived giving us our first viewing of Caleb Landry Jones ('The Last Exorcism') having a peek at something quite sci-fi. Malcolm McDowell ('Halloween'), Sarah Gadon, Douglas Smith, James Cade, Nicholas Campbell, Lara Jean Chorostecki, Joe Pingue, Matt Watts and Elitsa Bako all co-star. Check out the still below....
