“What are you doing a fucking series on David Beckham for?”
It’s a question director Fisher Stevens said he fielded multiple times as he told friends and colleagues he had been courted to make what has become Netflix’s most-watched documentary of the past year. In discussion with IndieWire over Zoom, the multi-talented filmmaker revealed that he, too, was surprised at first to be approached with the idea for “Beckham,” and even a bit resistant to taking it on.

Tomorrow marks 30 years since the death of Ayrton Senna, the legendary Brazilian Formula One driver killed in a grisly crash on the track. He’s as close to a god in the country as any man not named Pelé, yet save for the brilliant 2010 documentary “Senna,” his life has never been depicted on screen.
Netflix will be the first to try with its upcoming scripted series “Senna.” With any luck, Senna will not just be an icon in Brazil but the face of Netflix’s enormous expansion into the Latin American market.
“Senna” showrunner Vicente Amorim says his series is one of the biggest productions in Latin American history and uses an almost entirely Brazilian crew, something that demanded a massive investment in the region from Netflix. No one will say how much the “Senna” budget is, but the production values and the re-creation of 13 F1 tracks and models of...

President Joe Biden mocked former president Donald Trump for boasting about how he won two golf trophies during an awards ceremony at the Trump International Golf Club last weekend.
“It is my great honor to be at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach tonight, Awards Night, to receive The Club Championship Trophy & The Senior Club Championship Trophy,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “I Won Both!”
“A large and golfing talented membership, a Great and difficult course, made the play very exciting,” he continued. “The qualifying and match play was amazing. A large and distinguished group will be there tonight. Very exciting, thank you!!!”
“Congratulations, Donald,” Biden wrote mockingly on X on March 24. “Quite the accomplishment.
Biden attached a screenshot of Trump’s post to his post.
The Trump campaign fired back at the current president in a statement in which they attacked their opponent’s physical capabilities.

Cillian Murphy, the veteran actor known for working on projects like Peaky Blinders, Batman Begins, and, Oppenheimer, is all set for his Oscar nomination. Being an Irish actor, Murphy is extremely proud and yet, humbled, to receive a nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
Talking about the subject of fame, Murphy simply accepted that even if he did win the Oscar, he still wouldn’t be more famous than Irish football coach Roy Keane! The humbling sentences reminded people of Keanu Reeves as they root for their favorite actor to win his deserving Oscar.

The Greatest Brazilian Jiu-jitsu fighter in the world is looking to fight me.
“Put your hands up,” Rickson Gracie tells me as he advances. “Like you’re talking like an Italian.”
I raise my hands as he lunges toward my head.
“Don’t let me touch your face.”
Gracie — the 63-year-old legend with shorn hair and tanned skin — is wearing gray shorts and a black T-shirt. He’s muscular and compact. I’m taller, but that’s about it. He can choke me unconscious with little to no effort. His hands shoot out,...

“How did I become Tom Joad? I used to write for a living.”
Tom Joad was the hapless farmer in The Grapes of Wrath who fled the Dust Bowl to find a better life in California. The man who cited him this week is a successful screenwriter who’s been walking the picket line and asked that I not use his name.
While the cast of pickets might not mirror John Steinbeck’s characters in his great novel, still “the rhetoric of this strike has taken on a ‘rich against the poor’ obsession,” in the words of one studio CEO.
The bargaining jargon once focused on residuals, but now it’s about “land barons” and “tone-deaf greedy bosses” (the words of SAG-AFTRA’s Fran Drescher). Little wonder polling shows only 7% of the public siding with the “bosses.” The “class warfare” has passed the 100-day mark, with L.A. city workers joining in Tuesday.

It’s easy to find sport-specific lists of movies online. From Bodog’s list of the top 5 legendary basketball films — which puts the gritty and ageless White Men Can’t Jump at its #1 spot, and we couldn’t possibly agree more—To others that also cover films, it’s not rare to get a lowdown on the best or the most popular films in a particular sport.
Then there are also perennial lists for sports on film review websites, like Rotten Tomatoes’ list of 30 essential football films, and overall sports lists like IMDb’s all-time highest-rated sports films that can also include films not primarily sports-based. But what is generally lacking is the list of the best films in a select few sports, ones that are the most popular in the UK. Today, we’re going to make that list for you!

This post contains spoilers for the season 3 finale of "Ted Lasso."
"Ted Lasso" was adept at delivering the thrills of a sports drama, with the fall and rise of an underground English football team, while also telling a beautiful story about community, mental health, self-improvement, and being open about emotions.
After three seasons, "Ted Lasso" is seemingly, apparently, as far as we know, done and over. After two very strong seasons, the final season was a very mixed bag, with a lack of focus thanks to longer episodes that dragged on, a sermon-of-the-week format that seemed to take away from the joy of earlier seasons, and a misguided football story that was too obsessed with winning — until it wasn't.
This is (kind of) a football show, of course, meaning the characters' careers and stories carry on after the end of the finale. We know Ted Lasso's career at AFC Richmond is over,...

There’s a strange synchronicity in watching writer-director Gabriel Martins’ latest feature “Mars One” as Brazil rejoices in the recent re-election of Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva for a third term. The bittersweet film, in theaters and on Netflix now via Ava DuVernay’s distribution label Array, begins just as rightwing politician Jair Bolsonaro was elected in late 2018.
But for the working-class family at its center, the macro changes in the spheres of government don’t much register while they struggle to stay financially afloat. Bolsonaro’s election and inauguration play in the background of their everyday lives without any of the characters ever acknowledging or engaging with the results. Not only are they from a lower socioeconomic status, but they are Black in a still racist society, like most in Latin America.

Santos, Brazil, Jan 3 (Ians) Thousands of people gathered in the Brazilian city of Santos to bid farewell to football legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pele, who died at 82 on Thursday from colon cancer.
His wake was being held at the Urbano Caldira Stadium, the home field of Pele’s former team Santos, allowing fans to pay their last respects. Among those who attended were FIFA president Gianni Infantino, and the chief of South America’s Conmebol football confederation, Alejandro Dominguez, reports Xinhua news agency.

Brazilian football legend Pelé passed away at the age of 82 on December 29, 2022. The sad news came less than two weeks after Lionel Messi held aloft the trophy at the Qatar 2022 Word Cup, eliminating any doubt that he deserves his place in the conversation about who is the greatest footballer of all time. Yet for some, the Emir's insistence on honoring the Argentine captain with the traditional bisht was an unwelcome reminder of the controversial venue for the tournament, while his compatriot Diego Maradona's legacy will always be tainted by the "Hand of God." Meanwhile, Pelé remains synonymous with the world's favorite sport at its most exuberant and uninhibited.Although it's been over 50 years since he last played for the Seleção, Pelé in the brilliant gold and blue of Brazil at the 1970 World Cup, embracing a teammate and punching the air with joy, is one of football's most iconic images.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé, died on Thursday at 82.
According to a statement from Albert Einstein Hospital, where he was first admitted in late November, Pelé’s death was caused by multiple organ failure from the progression of his colon cancer.
Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, has declared three days of mourning and called Pelé “a great citizen and patriot, raising the name of Brazil wherever he went.”
In Memoriam 2022: 100 Great Celebrities Who Died This Year!
The renowned soccer player became the first and only person ever to win three World Cups. In 1967, Nigeria famously called a ceasefire during a civil war so he could play a match there. Thirty years later, Queen Elizabeth II knighted the athlete.
Pelé was quietly Brazil’s first black national hero. As biographer Angelica Basthi explained, “He is key for black people’s pride in Brazil, but never wanted to be a flag-bearer.

Rio de Janeiro, Dec 30 (Ians) Tributes flowed for Brazilian football legend Pele following his death from cancer at the age of 82.
Pele’s passing dominated news headlines in Brazil and across South America on Friday.
“Pele showed the power of sport and set a new limit to fame,” the Folha de S.Paulo newspaper said, referring to his status as an icon of the 20th century.
It also highlighted Pele’s role in temporarily halting Nigeria’s civil conflict as the warring parties signed a two-day ceasefire in 1969 to accommodate a friendly match featuring the famous No. 10.
“The superstar enchanted with his football stopped wars and changed the game forever,” Folha de S.Paulo’s Juca Kfouri wrote.
The newspaper praised Pele’s ability to maintain impossibly high standards over a professional career that started in his mid-teens and extended until his mid-30s.
“During his 20-year career, teams changed.

This year, owing to the controversy over host country Qatar, major cities in France are not erecting the usual giant outdoor screens.
In the second half on Saturday, Kylian Mbappé scored both goals for Les Bleus, bringing his total to three in the two matches so far this tournament. Mbappé’s career World Cup record increased to seven goals in just nine appearances.
The striker has also tied Brazilian legend Pelé as the only other player under 24 to mark seven World Cup goals. What’s more, Mbappé now has a total 31 international goals for France, level with Zinedine Zidane. German player Miroslav Klose remains the top scorer in the history of the World Cup with 16 goals across four tournaments.
Now qualified to move on to the round of 16, Didier Deschamps’ reigning world champions will next face Tunisia on Wednesday.
Today’s play includes Japan v Costa Rica, Belgium v Morocco, Croatia v Canada and Spain v Germany.

Hugo Sanchez, the Goal and the Glory is a documentary that reviews the life and career of Hugo Sanchez, the legendary Mexican soccer player who became an idol in Spain with Atlético de Madrid and later with Real Madrid.
It is directed by Francisco Javier Padilla and features appearances by Hugo Sánchez himself, Jorge Valdano, Cristiano Ronaldo, Juan Villoro and many more.
About the Documentary
He was once a young footballer in Mexico City who would later become an international record-breaking star at Real Madrid. His story has broken barriers and is definitely inspiring; certainly a gifted legend who’s life must be brought to the big screen. Hugo Sanchez’s story must be told as the greatest ever Mexican soccer player who proved himself with a unique and unstoppable talent. Not Maradona; not Pelé. He is Hugo Sanchez.

Arguably the greatest soccer player of all time, Pelé, was admitted to Sao Paulo’s Hospital Albert Einstein on Wednesday according to his doctors. It is the second time in the past few months the three-time World Cup winner has been admitted for treatment on a tumor in his colon.
In September, doctors operated on the tumor. Pelé was hospitalized for the next month before being released to continue chemotherapy. And now he’s been admitted again, though the 81-year-old icon’s publicist told Afp, “He went in for chemo. He always has to go to the hospital for the treatment.”
His doctors said, “The patient is stable, and is expected to be released in the coming days.”
Pelé had prostate surgery in 2015, according to the BBC, and was admitted again in 2019 for a urinary infection. Afp notes that he has used a walker of late, and his public appearances have become “increasingly rare.
