ABC has bought a multi-camera comedy starring Saturday Night Live alum Jim Breuer. Former According To Jim executive producers Judd Pillot and John Peaslee will write and run the project, which originated at ABC Studios. It is a multi-generational comedy that follows Breuer and his wife living under the same roof with his father and three daughters. Levity Entertainment Group, which manages Breuer, is attached to executive produce. Breuer, who is a regular guest on the The Howard Stern Show, is repped by UTA, which also reps Pillot and Peaslee, along with Brillstein.

Generally speaking, when a comedy hits theaters to the moviegoers surprise, having not heard of the film, it’s a good sign the movie isn’t very good. There are exceptions, but Crazy On The Outside really isn’t one of them. That’s not to say Tim Allen’s directorial debut doesn’t have it’s own merits, it just simply doesn’t succeed on those merits.
Written by Judd Pillot and John Peaslee, both of whom are television writers having most recently worked on the sitcom According To Jim, this helps to explain why the film often feels a bit like a made-for-tv movie. Crazy On The Outside’s most devastating flaw is that this style of writing just doesn’t fair well for a feature film. Add that the flow of the story is disjointed and the humor is hit and miss, and what you end up...

Tim Allen must have a lot of friends in Hollywood. Otherwise, I have no idea how he could convince so many great actors to show up in his atrocious looking directorial debut, Crazy on the Outside. Allen stars as a man who spent three years in jail, and is now out trying to reconnect with his family and piece his life back together. Truly, the plot is a work of sheer originality. The film is written by writing team Judd Pillot and John Peaslee, who've both worked together on sitcoms like According to Jim and 8 Simple Rules. The film's cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, J.K. Simmons, Ray Liotta, Kelsey Grammer, and Julie Bowen. Again, I have no idea what they're doing in this thing. Just watch the trailer already (if you're brave, check out the HD version over at Yahoo): It's not as if I hate Tim Allen either.

USA Network has handed out a 90-minute, cast-contingent pilot order to the medical-themed "Operating Instructions" from Conan O'Brien's production banner.
The tentatively titled project centers on a top female trauma surgeon who returns home from two tours in Iraq to take a post as head of surgery at a military hospital. It marks USA's third pilot pickup this year following "Royal Pains" and "White Collar."
"Instructions" is from O'Brien's Conaco and Universal Cable Prods., with O'Brien, Conaco president David Kissinger, Judd Pillot and John Peaslee serving as executive producers. Pillot and Peaslee ("According to Jim," "8 Simple Rules," "Just Shoot Me") wrote the script.
Jeff Wachtel, executive vp original programming at USA and co-head of original programming at Universal Cable Prods., praised the script, saying that after he read it, he couldn't wait to share it with his network colleagues.
"It's something that's not like everything else we've done," he said.

The CIA, the operating room and the morgue will serve as settings for three new projects in development at USA, the network said Sunday at the TCA press tour. In addition, the hiring of Mark Feuerstein to star in a pilot removes the cast contingency from "Royal Pains."
Feuerstein will play a doctor on call to the rich and famous in the pilot from The Firm and Universal Cable Productions. The project is exec produced by Rich Frank and Paul Frank and written and co-exec produced by Andrew Lenchewski. Jace Alexander will direct.
The three new projects, all with working titles:
-- "Covert Affairs," in which a CIA linguist is partnered with her ex-boyfriend. Written and co-exec produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, exec produced by Dave Bartis and Doug Liman, from Dutch Oven.
-- "Operating Instructions," about an inner-city surgeon home from Iraq. Written and exec produced by Judd Pillot and John Peaslee, exec produced by Conan O'Brien and David Kissinger, from Conaco and Universal Cable Studios.
-- "Stiffs," with a single father and body transporter for a morgue who solves crimes with his brother, a medical examiner. Written and co-exec produced by Craig O'Neill and Jason Tracey, exec produced by Peter Guber and Elizabeth Stephen.
The announcements were accompanied by other news items, including a renewal of "In Plain Sight," USA's summer series, for a second season. The series stars Mary McCormack as a U.S. marshal in the witness protection program. USA also announced that "Starter Wife," a new series based on USA's miniseries and the novel by Gigi Levangie Grazer and starring Debra Messing, will premiere Oct. 10.
USA will celebrate the 100th episode of "Monk" on Sept. 5 with nearly that many guest stars. The 100th episode show will include Eric McCormack, John Turturro, Howie Mandel, Sarah Silverman, Andy Richter, Brooke Adams and Sharon Lawrence, among others, many of them reprising guest roles on the detective series.
Sister cable channel Bravo used the day to unveil its new and returning programs including "American Artist" (working title), from producer Sarah Jessica Parker's Pretty Matches, Magical Elves and Eli Holzman. The series is a one-hour competition with aspiring artists hoping to win a gallery show and a cash prize. Other shows in development are "Fashion House," a competition of fashion designers and "Top Chef: Masters," a spinoff of the "Top Chef" competition.
Meanwhile, Oxygen announced it has picked up a third season of "The Bad Girls Club" and will expand the Bunim-Murray Production from a half hour to an hour with seven new "bad girls" being brought to a Los Angeles mansion for help with their outrageous behavior. In addition, Oxygen unveiled a new reality series, "Dance Your Ass Off," in which overweight contestants compete to lose weight through dance.

After years of mugging for the camera, Tim Allen finally is sitting in the feature director's chair.
Allen will direct, as well as star in, an adult comedy titled Crazy on the Outside. Ray Liotta, Carrie-Anne Moss, Julie Bowen and Kelsey Grammer are in negotiations to also star.
The indie feature, written by Judd Pilot and John Peaslee, follows a ex-con who finds his life outside of prison to be much crazier, especially once he enters his sister's world.
Brian Reilly, Brett Gregory, Richard Baker and Anastasia Stanecki are producing the indie, which is being financed privately.
Justin Moritt, the unit production manager on such films as I Am Legend and Hitch, is exec producing.
Allen directed one episode of his 1990s sitcom Home Improvement, but Crazy will be his feature helming debut.
He next will be seen in Redbelt, written and directed by David Mamet, which opens April 25. He also stars in the indie ensemble comedy The Six Wives of Henry Lefay and will reprise his voice role as Buzz Lightyear for Toy Story 3.
Allen is repped by WMA and Messina/Baker Entertainment.

Writer-producers Judd Pillot and John Peaslee have been tapped as the new showrunners of the ABC comedy 8 Simple Rules. The duo, who have inked a one-year deal with series producer Touchstone TV with an option for a second, will fill the void left by series creator Tracy Gamble. Gamble, who surprisingly stepped down this month as executive producer/showrunner of the show, citing personal reasons, is in negotiations to stay on as a consultant.
