With the recent announcement of the Until Dawn film adaptation, we’ve officially reached the point of film adaptations of video games that were already essentially playable movies from the jump. And given the gameplay of Until Dawn, director David F. Sandberg is going to have an array of both interesting and difficult decisions to make in order to pull off a successful adaptation.
Supermassive Games has often described its portfolio of choice-based narrative video games like Until Dawn and The Quarry as essentially putting players in the director’s seat of a horror film and allowing their decisions to shape the story. It’s no surprise in the current film environment that Until Dawn is getting the film adaptation treatment–video game adaptations, specifically genre games, are currently basking in audience fervor (see the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie and HBO’s The Last of Us). Although the current state of the "Scream" franchise is a giant mess, it's worth remembering that merely a few years ago, its future seemed as bright as ever. 2022's "Scream" was a clear-cut hit at the box office, and it successfully introduced a whole new generation of characters who could be chased around with a knife for many installments to come. "Scream 5" not only did all this while keeping Sidney and Gale in the fold, but it also set the groundwork for the return of Kirby (Hayden Panettiere).
Despite being a fan favorite in "Scream 4," Kirby was tragically left for dead near the end of the movie. How'd she die? Well, she made the tragic mistake of trusting her potential love interest Charlie (Rory Culkin), trying to save him from Ghostface when she should've been saving herself. Scream VII is now moving forward without the previous movie's leads, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, and while plot details are still under wraps, rumors have claimed that the story will revolve around Sidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox) and some new characters defending Sid's family from some kind of Ghostface cult.
There have been conflicting reports about exactly how many masked maniacs will be targetting our returning heroes, but thanks to insider Daniel Richtman, we may have a little more to go on regarding the "younger leads" that are currently being cast.
Apparently, there will be a "big time jump" following the events of the last movie, presumably to allow for Sidney's children to have grown to appropriate slasher movie age. Richtman has also heard that this film will be at least partially set in a new town, and is being developed as the first instalment in a new trilogy.

After many controversies surrounding the production of the upcoming Scream movie, tentatively titled Scream 7, the fans managed to calm themselves down when it was announced that some major stars would be returning to the movie, despite Jenna Ortega’s exit following Melissa Barrera’s controversial dismissal. Franchise legend Kevin Williamson confirmed his return as director, with Neve Campbell also confirming the return of Sydney Prescott. Courtney Cox was confirmed to be in talks for a return, while several other names are also rumored, but nothing has been confirmed on that front. Now, some early reports have surfaced that the film’s production is moving fast, with filming supposedly scheduled to begin in September 2024.
Several industry-focused Twitter profiles have confirmed this piece of information, and Neve Campbell is listed as the source, as the actress seemingly confirmed that the movie’s production will begin later this year.

In 2022, Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media revived the Scream franchise with a new entry (the fifth) that was a box office hit, earning almost $139 million at the global box office. Fourteen months later, Scream VI came along – and became an even bigger hit, pulling in almost $169 million at the global box office, a number that was up there with the series’ heyday, when the first Scream and Scream 2 made just over $170 million. (Scream 3 also made over $160 million – only Scream 4 failed to crack $100 million.) So, of course, the companies are moving full steam ahead with Scream 7. While the movie seemed, initially, to be on the fast-track to success, the track it’s on has turned out to be a shockingly bumpy ride.

Despite this, the Surrey-based company has announced that it’s to lay off around 90 members of staff – equating to about a quarter of its employees, which is said to number around the 350 mark.
Bloomberg first reported the news (via Eurogamer), and while those numbers haven’t been officially confirmed by Supermassive, the studio has confirmed that a “reorganisation” is underway which will result in multiple job losses.
“It’s no secret that the games industry is currently facing significant challenges,” a statement posted on Twitter/X reads, “and unfortunately we aren’t immune to this.”

The future of the "Scream" franchise may be looking pretty shaky right about now, but at least the stars of the franchise are there to support one another. "Scream VI" star Melissa Barrera was fired from the upcoming "Scream 7" by Spyglass Entertainment in November 2023 after she posted on social media that Gaza was "being treated like a concentration camp" in the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, and that its citizens were being subject to "genocide." Spyglass deemed her comments "antisemitic," citing a zero-tolerance policy on "false references to genocide." The statement was widely challenged at the time, and this week the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take immediate measures to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.
Shortly after the news of Barrera's firing broke, fans learned that "Scream 6" favorite Jenna Ortega would also not be returning for the sequel, though she had dropped out during the summer due to scheduling conflicts.

“Scream” franchise star Hayden Panettiere has spoken out about Melissa Barrera’s firing from the horror film series, calling her controversial exit “very unfair and upsetting.”
Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in 2022’s “Scream” and 2023’s “Scream VI,” was fired from the upcoming “Scream 7” after her social media posts about Palestine were deemed antisemitic by Spyglass, the production banner behind the hit horror franchise.
Spyglass said in a statement to Variety at the time: “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
“After she [spoke out], then a whole bunch of other actors and people in the industry started to do the same thing, right?” Panettiere said in a recent interview with The Messenger. “It was almost like she just did it earlier than everyone else.

Hayden Panettiere is speaking out about her time on the 2010s TV drama Nashville, saying it was “traumatizing” to play a character whose personal troubles echoed her own. “I felt like I was acting out my own life,” Panettiere says in a new interview with The Messenger. “Straight from the beginning, it was like, I’m dating a football player, [and then] Juliette dates a football player. They must navigate dread and fear to make it through the night in one piece. The video game, which starred Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere in motion-capture versions, was named in Variety’s 2021 list of games that deserve movie adaptations.

After making one of the most refreshing DC superhero movies in years, and also one of the worst, David F. Sandberg is finally returning to his horror roots. Unsurprisingly for IP-obsessed Hollywood, Sandberg's return is not with an original horror story, but with an adaptation of a popular title — a video game, to be exact.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sandberg has signed up to direct an adaptation of "Until Dawn," the PlayStation horror game, for Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions. The script was originally written by Blair Butler (who previously wrote the underwhelming vampire flick "The Invitation"), but "Annabelle: Creation" writer Gary Dauberman is reportedly giving the script another pass.
Though specifics on this adaptation are scarce, Screen Gems is reportedly describing the film version as an "R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast."
"Until Dawn" was first released in 2015 for the PlayStation 4 as an interactive horror game.

Awards season kicks into overdrive on the first weekend of the year with the return of the Golden Globes. The 81st telecast has a new broadcast partner (CBS), a new host (Jo Koy), new catering (Nobu) and a new social calendar accompanying it. For years, the Golden Globes were followed by a crush of studio and network bashes inside the show’s headquarters at the Beverly Hilton, making it a favorite of countless party-hopping revelers. But pandemic era cutbacks and studio consolidation upended the festivities — gone is the Warner Bros. and InStyle soiree while HBO scaled back under new corporate parent Warner Bros. Discovery and will be hosting something on Emmy weekend — though all is not lost. This year’s parties are spread across the weekend and at various venues across the city.

The Scream franchise began in 1996, with the slasher film series accruing a diehard fan base that lobbied for more movies after Scream 4's underwhelming box office performance led to the cancellation of its sequels.
Fans got their wish with 2022's successful outing that featured a mix of old and new cast members to tell a killer new tale.
Twenty-twenty-three's New York-set Scream 6 managed to do the impossible by surviving -- and thriving! -- without series star Neve Campbell.
That flick proved that the venerable title wasn't opposed to revamping the narrative.
Armed with a cast headlined by Melissa Barerra and Jenna Ortega, Scream 6 became the biggest entry yet, leading to a swift announcement for a seventh film in the franchise.
At the time, the series seemed destined to continue with Barrera and Ortega's Sam and Tara Carpenter as the final girls, and we expected that we'd finally meet their mother,...

Neve Campbell is sharing her thoughts on the current Scream franchise and opening up about Scream VI and the Scream V storyline that left her disappointed.
During an appearance at Monster-Mania Con earlier this month, Campbell talked about Scream VI, the film she walked away from after not coming to terms over her pay.
Ahead of her appearance at the convention, Campbell said she had watched Scream Vi recently adding, “It took me a minute, I don’t know why.”
“I actually thought they did a really good job. I think the cast are really powerful, wonderful actors,” Campbell told the crowd in attendance of her panel.
“I don’t wish these movies ill will. I wanted the movie to be good. It’s not like I’m sitting in my house going, ‘I hope it sucks, I hope it doesn’t do well.’ I care about all the people involved.
