News of the death of Celluloid Dreams CEO Hengameh Panahi has sparked an outpouring of admiration and tributes from the independent film community.
Panahi, a pivotal figure in the global art house scene, died Nov. 5, aged 67. In her decades in the business — as a producer, co-financier and sales agent — Panahi introduced the world to international auteurs from Iran (Jafar Panahi, Marjane Satrapi), Europe (Jacques Audiard, François Ozon, Gaspar Noé, Marco Bellocchio, Aleksandr Sokurov, the Dardenne brothers) and across Asia (Takeshi Kitano, Naomi Kawase, Jia Zanghke, Hirokazu Kore-eda).
“She took films that were challenging, that were difficult to make, to sell, to promote, and she fought for them,” says Oscar-winning producer Jeremy Thomas (The Last Emperor) who knew and worked with Panahi for more than 30 years. “She was a unique part of the film ecosystem. She was really inspirational, with the films that she enabled to be made, and seen.”

The international feature film race has always been a minefield for international politics and a vehicle for soft power. With no shortage of drama, scandal and diva antics, it’s basically the Eurovision of the film biz.
But in recent years, as international contenders have become more powerful following “Parasite’s” boundary-breaking best picture win, this particular Oscar race has invited more scrutiny than ever. The decisions of national film committees are keenly observed, analyzed, debated and even contested. And what many consider the most deserving film doesn’t always make the cut.
Besides setting submission deadlines and green-lighting selection committees, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is fairly hands off, and its criteria straightforward: A country’s entry has to be in any language but English (which is why Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or-winning “Triangle of Sadness” wasn’t submitted by Sweden); a U.S. theatrical...

Four weeks ago, we heard that Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg, had been slapped with an Nc-17 by the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. The reason given for that rating was “some graphic violence and sexual content”. The ratings announcement came with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appealed to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R. And apparently that appeal didn’t go their way, because it has now been announced that Infinity Pool was edited in order to receive an R rating.
The new rating announcement says that Infinity Pool was been rated R for “graphic violence, disturbing material, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, drug use and some language.” Which makes it sound even harsher than the Nc-17 cut.

Sideshow and Janus Films have acquired the U.S. rights to “No Bears,” the next film from Iranian director Jafar Panahi, who is imprisoned and serving a six-year prison sentence by the Iranian government.
Panahi’s latest film made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this fall and won the Special Jury Prize. It later played at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The accolades came shortly after Panahi was arrested by Iranian authorities after he had inquired about the status of two other detained Iranian directors. The government has now forced him to serve out a six-year jail sentence originally issued to Panahi in December 2010. At that time, he was banned for 20 years from directing movies, writing screenplays or giving any form of interview with an Iranian or foreign press, though he has since showcased other films such as “This Is Not a Film,” “Closed Curtain,” “Taxi” and...

Alice Diop’s Saint Omer has been selected as France’s entry to the best international film category.
The drama was among five features shortlisted for the honor out of 33 submissions alongside Eric Gavel’s Full Time, Lise Asoka and Roman Gueret’s The Worst Ones, Alice Winocour’s Paris Memories and Mia Hansen-Love’s One Fine Morning.
Saint Omer recently premiered at Venice, winning the Silver Lion Grand Jury prize and Luigi De Laurentis First Film Award.
Loosely inspired by a real-life infanticide trial in 2013, the drama follows a pregnant novelist as she attends the troubling trial of a young Senegalese woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France.
The drama is lead produced by Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral at Paris-based Srab Films, who previously took credits on Ladj Ly’s Oscar-nominated French feature Les Misérables.

Over a year has gone by since we heard that Alexander Skarsgard (Godzilla vs. Kong) would be starring in Infinity Pool, a new sci-fi thriller from director Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg. Infinity Pool, which also stars Mia Goth – who Ti West is working on turning into a genre icon with his X, Pearl, and MaXXXine trilogy – has since made its way through production, and was recently screened for the ratings board at the Motion Picture Association. And that screening didn’t go the way Cronenberg and distributor Neon were hoping it would. The ratings board has slapped Infinity Pool with an Nc-17 rating for “some graphic violence and sexual content”.
The ratings announcement on FilmRatings.com comes with the note that the makers of Infinity Pool intend to appeal to the Classification and Rating Administration appeals board in an attempt to get the Nc-17 turned into an R.

“The Maiden,” Graham Foy’s finely tuned story of adolescent mythmaking, togetherness and grief, has its world premiere Tuesday in Venice Days before heading to Toronto, but the film’s impressive international journey actually began in Cannes two years ago.
Based in Toronto since 2008, Foy grew up in suburban Calgary where “Maiden” is set, spent teenage summers near the graffiti-covered railroad bridge and ragged ravine, where much of the film was shot, and, like one of the characters, was an avid skateboarder.
He had been tapping away at the “Maiden” script — which draws from his experiences but is not autobiographical — for several years when his short “August 22, This Year” was selected for the 2020 Cannes’ Critics’ Week.
“It was the year the pandemic shut down Cannes, so we couldn’t go, but the festival did a lot for the filmmakers,” said Foy, who spoke to Variety from Venice last week, in advance of the festival.

The Netflix relationship has strengthened the festival, said the artistic director.
Venice Film festival artistic director Alberto Barbera unveiled an enticing line-up on Tuesday, festooned with the work of A-list auteurs and red carpet stars.
He talks to Screen about his ever-increasing negotiating power, what he can do to support Iranian filmmakers, and what festivalgoers can expect from this year’s event.
The Venice-Netflix relationship is a strong one. Has this led to a privileged position in terms of having first choice over its films? Does this also help in negotiating with the studios?

Alexander Skarsgård will star in Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” a sci-fi thriller about a vacation that takes a twist.
Neon, the studio behind “Parasite,” will co-finance and executive produce the film alongside Topic Studios, which previously produced “Leave No Trace” and “Luce.” “Infinity Pool” comes on the heels of Skarsgård’s star turn in “Godzilla vs. Kong,” one of the few box office success stories of the pandemic era. Cronenberg recently directed the trippy horror film, “Possessor,” which Neon released.
Here’s the official logline for “Infinity Pool”: “James and Em are young, rich, in love, and on vacation. Their all-inclusive resort boasts island tours and gleaming beaches. But outside of the hotel gates waits something much more dangerous and seductive, beyond the edge of paradise.” Given Cronenberg’s out-there oeuvre, that “something” probably doesn’t involve lost travelers checks or a failure to apply sufficient sunscreen.
