Based on a True Story composer Sherri Chung brought a typewriter to the orchestra to perform her score during Deadline’s Sound & Screen live-music event. The typewriter was just one of the unusual instruments she included in the music for the Peacock comedy mystery.
“I just wanted find something that was fun and cool to use that I’d never been able to use before,” Chung said. “It was definitely a little bit more modern noir, which a typewriter’s not that. The show is the modern part.”
In the Peacock/Universal Cable Productions series, Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina play a married couple who start a true crime podcast that attracts the attention of the killer himself (Tom Bateman). The podcasters find themselves caught between reporting on the killer and becoming his accomplice.

Composer Blake Neely called his score for Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air a tribute to his mentor, the late Michael Kamen. Kamen gave Neely his first job as an orchestrator on Band of Brothers, the first in Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ World War II series trilogy.
“It’s a love letter to Michael,” Neely said, choking up at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event talking about Kamen, who died in 2003. “I got my start in this business because of Michael Kamen. On Band of Brothers I was one of his orchestrators. Then we lost him.”
The producers of The Pacific asked Neely to work with Hans Zimmer and Geoff Zanelli. Neely did so reluctantly, but stopped producer Gary Goetzman in his tracks when he began asking Neely to collaborate again on Masters.

Masters of the Air is the third World War II miniseries from Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, following Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Goetzman said Spielberg’s father had been pushing them to do the series about WWII pilots since their first.
“We had an obligation to Steven’s father,” Goetzman said at Contenders TV. “He was in the Army Air Force. He’d seen Band and The Pacific and say to Steven, ‘Those are great. When are you going to do the pilots? When are you going to do Europe? If we ever did another one that would be it.’ Then Don Miller’s book came along.”

Bassist Tony Kanal has embarked on a new career as a TV composer. But he had to put that aside for a special date tonight at Coachella with his friends in No Doubt.
Debuting in 1992, the Anaheim, California group has sold more than 33 million albums. As a member of No Doubt, he helped launch multi-platinum, iconic hits like “Don’t Speak,” “Just A Girl,” “Spiderwebs,” “Hella Good,” “Ex-Girlfriend,” and “It’s My Life” up the charts, netting a pair of Grammy wins, appearances on the covers of Rolling Stone, Alternative Press and Spin, and even a Kennedy Center Honors performance paying tribute to Sir Paul McCartney.
Tonight marks No Doubt’s first major headlining show since 2015.
Kanal has been collaborating with composer Blake Neely, an Emmy winner known for his work on The Arrowverse, Greyhound, and Riverdale, with Kanal guesting on Neely’s soundtrack for the DC Comics TV series Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Despite all the musical superstars who entered this year’s Emmy competition, only one – Ed Sheeran – managed to score when the 75th annual Emmy Award nominations were announced Wednesday.
Sheeran was nominated (along with co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance) for the song “A Beautiful Game” for the season 3 finale of “Ted Lasso,” one of two songs from the popular Apple TV+ series that made it into the music-and-lyrics category.
Emmy’s 550-member music peer group ignored the original songs entered by Dolly Parton, David Byrne, Steve Martin, Kid Cudi, Donald Glover and Lainey Wilson, as well as those from such Oscar-winning tunesmiths as Alan Menken, Steven Schwartz, Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Among the seven music categories, a surprising number of first-time nominees was recognized, and more than one-fourth of all the nominees in the five composition and songwriting categories are women, another positive sign of change in the Hollywood musical landscape.

Even though “Good Night Oppy” takes place on an entirely different planet, composer Blake Neely made a very conscious choice to use standard orchestrations when composing the documentary’s original score. “There are some computery and metallic sounds in the score that float about here and there, but mostly I used traditional piano and orchestra because we really wanted to bring things to life,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent interview (watch the exclusive video interview above).
He had tried using electronic styles of music for the score but he found that the sound just wasn’t doing the trick, which led him to use piano even though there’s a certain trope surrounding that instrument amongst composers. “There’s sometimes a joke among composers, like, you can’t use piano in space but there’s a lot of piano in this space movie.”

In the new documentary Good Night Oppy, the Mars Opportunity rover becomes the scrappy robot that could: an instrument platform that trundles across a rusty landscape millions of miles away, searching for alien life signs, and outlasts its own projected existence by almost 15 years.
But none of the affection that audiences feel for this unsinkable machine would exist if not for Opportunity’s people — “our human-being characters,” as director Ryan White fondly called the celebrated mission’s engineers, scientists and programmers. Without them, “it is just a box of bolts and wires,” he said at Deadline’s Contenders Documentary event that also featured the film’s Oscar-winning sound designer, Mark Mangini, and Emmy-winning composer, Blake Neely.

All eyes were on nonfiction films tonight when the Critics Choice Documentary Awards took place in New York City. The ceremony highlights the best feature, short, and television documentaries, pitting blockbusters like “The Beatles: Get Back” and “Moonage Daydream” against smaller Oscar contenders like “Descendant” and “Fire of Love.” The ceremony serves as an early battleground in the Best Documentary Feature race, so it’s a can’t-miss event for Oscar watchers.

This coming holiday season, many glasses raised in Hollywood may be filled with spiritless spirits. Stars are jumping into the nonalcoholic adult beverage market with their own brands; sales are up dramatically in the 395 million sector (rising 20.6 percent between August 2021 and August 2022, according to market research company NielsenIQ); and a growing list of celebs are speaking out about alcohol-free, sober and sober-curious lifestyles (Ben Affleck and wife Jennifer Lopez, Anne Hathaway, Chrissy Teigen, Drew Barrymore and Kit Harington among them). Also driving demand is a pandemic-fueled societal focus on wellness.
“We are at the beginning of a new era of social drinking,” trumpets Christopher Lackner, co-founder of Jeng, a maker of CBD-infused, alcohol-free canned cocktails (including a Jeng & Tonic, and a Paloma). “Now that there are high-quality alternatives, it’s no longer difficult or awkward to be sober. In fact, it’s quite a treat.

The Critics Choice Documentary Awards has announced its nominees, with Sara Dosa’s lava-fueled love story “Fire of Love” leading the field with seven nominations, including best documentary feature and director. Co-distributed by National Geographic and Neon, the film’s early release date has seemed to have no effect on its awards prospects, with its critical acclaim and strong showing from the Cca membership.

Any documentary with a score as lush and uplifting as the one that Blake Neely composed for “Good Night Oppy” has gotta be a glorified commercial for something, but at least is upfront about what it’s selling: The magic of science.
Family-friendly Stem propaganda that never feels like it was only (or even especially) made for kids, “Good Night Oppy” follows its Wall-e-like stars from their launch in 2003 all the way through their respective lifecycles on the Red Planet, which were only supposed to be 90 sols long (that’s Martian for “day”), but — in the nerd equivalent of a Hanukkah miracle — lasted for several years before the robots finally quiet quit as the people who made them watched from the sidelines some 300 million miles away. I never realized the search for water on an alien hellscape could be so darn touching.

Amazon’s Good Night Oppy is likely to be sold to audiences on the strength of its adorably anthropomorphic robotic protagonist and ambitious surface-of-Mars special effects from the wizards at Ilm. But the appeal of Ryan White’s endearing and emotional documentary is much more grounded.
Good Night Oppy is a lively celebration of unabashed nerdiness and enthusiastic problem-solving, the sort of movie that feels designed to attract Wall-e-loving children, who can then be shaped into the engineers and astrophysicists of the future. It’s a glossy advertisement for NASA and Jpl — I thought of Disney+’s recent Ilm documentary/commercial Light & Magic more than a few times while watching — but it comes by its waves of emotion honestly.
In 2003, two robotic rovers were sent to Mars on separate missions to collect data about the Red Planet’s topography and, hopefully, its history with water.

No documentary has ever won the Oscar for Best Picture. In fact no documentary has ever been nominated. If ever there was an opportunity to change that statistic, at least in terms of a nomination it could be the remarkable, emotional, and uplifting Good Night Oppy which transcends the genre to become a richly rewarding cinematic experience, kind of a cross between Wall-e and The Martian. this all actually happened, but it is quite unusual in that it is truly feel-good, and it has all been brought to new life in an irresitible new film that in a time of divisiveness and negativity will remind you of the very best of us.

Mars rovers Spirit and Opportunity — the stars of Ryan White’s inspirational and wonderfully engaging “Good Night Oppy” — were designed to last 90 days on the Red Planet. Instead, they went right on exploring the alien terrain for years, sending invaluable data and images back to NASA the whole time. For scientists, students and astronomy buffs around the world, the two robots became mascots for a historic mission, the goal of which was to find evidence of past water on Earth’s nearest neighbor, for that in turn could suggest the possibility of life on Mars.
To call the Mer experiment a success would be an understatement, but it wasn’t until this delightful documentary that a more important point became clear: As it turns out, for nearly 15 years, there was life on Mars: Within the opening minutes of “Good Night Oppy,” White convinces us that these two solar-powered, remote-controlled research...

The television academy first formally acknowledged the art of small screen music composition by honoring the “Dragnet” score in 1955, and they have similarly awarded other series every year since 1968. Since 2019, only continuing scripted shows have been allowed to compete for the Best Music for Series Emmy, while others are now either relegated to the Best Music for Limited Series or Best Music for Documentary Series categories.
The 2022 slate of Best Music for Series nominees includes comedies “The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max), “Only Murders in the Building” (Hulu) and “Schmigadoon!” (Apple TV+) and dramas “Loki” (Disney+), “Severance” (Apple TV+) and “Succession” (HBO). Each nominated composer, most of whom have been recognized before, currently has a shot at achieving their first victory in this category. Exclusive: Netflix is hoping to solve the legend of D.B. Cooper, the mystery man who hijacked a Northwest Airlines passenger jet in November 1971 and escaped with 200,000, never to be seen again.
The streamer has ordered D.B. Cooper: Where Are You?! from Fulwell 73 Productions and director Marina Zenovich’s Pmz Pictures.
The four-part doc series, which launches on July 13, marks the first true-crime project for Fulwell 73, which is best known for producing The Late Late Show with James Corden and Hulu’s The Kardashians.
The series looks at the 50-year quest to find Cooper, whose identity remains one of the greatest mysteries of the 20th century and the only unsolved case of air piracy in commercial aviation history.

Kaley Cuoco and Zosia Mamet Share How ‘The Flight Attendant’ Season 2 Hit Close to Home at FYC Event
Sure, the HBO Max series “The Flight Attendant,” about an alcoholic airline employee who ends up becoming a C.I.A. asset, is best known for its impressively out-there story beats, but for its cast, Season 2 hits a lot closer to home than one would think.
“I was going through so much this year, and so a lot of it was real,” said star Kaley Cuoco of her Season 2 performance as the titular flight attendant Cassie Bowden. Speaking to the audience of the comedy’s FYC event on Thursday night at the Television Academy’s Saban Media Center in Los Angeles, she joked that it’s even “almost a little silly” when she receives compliments on her ability to access those darker emotions for the show’s more dramatic scenes.

Brian Tyler, composer of the “Fast and Furious” franchise, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” was named a BMI Icon at Wednesday night’s 38th annual Broadcast Music Inc. Film, TV and Visual Media Awards in Beverly Hills.
Tyler is among the top 10 highest-grossing film composers of all time. His other films have included “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Rambo,” “Charlie’s Angels” and the recent reboot of “Scream.” His TV credits include “Yellowstone,” “1883,” “Hawaii Five-0,” “Sleepy Hollow” and “Transformers: Prime.” He also wrote the Formula One racing theme and, as his alter ego Madsonik, has written and produced several songs with a contemporary edge.
“It’s just mind-blowing to now be included in that pantheon of talent,” Tyler told Variety, referring to the many previous recipients of the performing-rights organization’s highest accolade, including John Williams, Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, Alexandre Desplat and Terence Blanchard.

Oscar-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez won their first primetime Emmy Sunday night for their popular “Agatha All Along” song from Marvel Studios and Disney Plus’ limited series “WandaVision.”
The collaborators, whose Academy Award wins include Disney’s “Frozen” and “Coco” movies, won in Emmy’s music and lyrics category, beating out tunes from “The Queen’s Gambit,” “The Boys,” “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” “Bo Burnham: Inside” and “Soundtrack of Our Lives.”
“Agatha All Along” shot to No. 1 on iTunes’ soundtrack chart after it appeared in the series’ penultimate episode, explaining the role that devious witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) had played throughout the unraveling mystery of the town of Westview.
Anderson-Lopez, in accepting the award, said she and her husband hadn’t been in Los Angeles in 21 months and “every return to normalcy should come with a big party and a shiny statue.” She called the “WandaVision” track “a...

After becoming the must-see cultural phenomenon last year during the pandemic, Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” dominated the Creative Arts Emmys this weekend with nine awards. Scott Frank’s Cold War-era limited series about orphan chess prodigy Beth (Anya Taylor-Joy) was honored across the board for casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period makeup (non-prosthetic), original dramatic score (Carlos Rafael Rivera), production design, sound editing, and sound mixing.
We’ll have to wait and see if this translates to “The Queen’s Gambit” winning Outstanding Limited Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on September 19. Regardless, Frank assembled a talented team of craftspeople for conveying an almost surreal mood and atmosphere to Beth’s rite of passage.
But the big question for Tesoro was: What is too much chess? The answer: Play the faces more than the chess. And once viewers got their first glimpse of Beth, they were hooked and carried...

These opening tunes include soaring orchestral pieces, a pulse-pounding homage to classic thrillers, a soft rock track and a collection of tributes to sitcoms through the years. Whichever composer wins will be taking home their first Primetime Emmy. So which opener will Emmy voters deem the best of the 2020-21 TV season? MTV Documentary Films has acquired Imagine Documentaries and Delirio Films’ documentary short “Coded: The Hidden Love of J.C. Leyendecker.”
Directed by Ryan White, “Coded” tells the story of early 20th century gay illustrator J.C. Leyendecker, whose advertising work was often coded with LGBTQ imagery. Despite Leyendecker’s success — he had more Saturday Evening Post covers than Norman Rockwell — his legacy has largely gone unnoticed.
The film, narrated by Neil Patrick Harris, won the best documentary short award at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival.
MTV announced the acquisition on Thursday morning.

“The Flight Attendant” is a major contender for the 2021 Emmy Awards. The hour-long thriller is on track to be the first Best Comedy Series nominee for HBO Max; the streaming service launched last year with only Anna Kendrick vehicle “Love Life” in contention for the 2020 cycle. “The Flight Attendant” debuted its eight-episode first season last fall, then picked up bids for both Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actress for Kaley Cuoco early this year at both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.
It more importantly also scored nominations from seven industry guilds and societies that overlap memberships with the Television Academy that votes on the Emmys. This set of seven tied it with “Ted Lasso” to lead all comedies that aired in 2020. 16 of the key creatives behind “The Flight Attendant” chatted with Gold Derby via webcam to discuss making the show, reflect on their recent nominations and preview the ordered next season.

The choices for Emmy’s music branch this year are overwhelming, with hundreds of series now available via broadcast, cable and streaming options. Here are six of the most talked-about possibilities for nomination in the original score categories.
The Flight Attendant
“The Flight Attendant” (HBO Max) featured one of the season’s most creative scores, courtesy of composer Blake Neely. At his initial meeting with producers, Neely remarked that he saw the hard-partying title character Cassie as “a broken child,” and thought “child instruments” such as toy pianos might make an interesting musical choice.
As Neely recalls: “Then I upped the ante and said, ‘How about only percussion?’” They loved the idea. Every musical sound in the eight-part series is a percussion instrument, from timpani and marimba to piano and tubular bells, all played by Neely.
“You start looking at things in your house differently,” he says. “My dishwasher, could I play that?...

Blake Neely might be the most prolific composer on television. A longtime collaborator of executive producer Greg Berlanti, he was behind the musical scores of “Batwoman,” “Blindspot,” “Connecting…,” “The Flash,” “Legends of Tomorrow,” “Riverdale” and “Supergirl” this season alone, as well as the Oscar-nominated Tom Hanks film “Greyhound.”
Neely should be phoning it in by now, but instead is earning particular praise for his work on the first season of “The Flight Attendant” on HBO Max. The “Piano for Dummies” author reveals in an exclusive interview (watch the video above), “It’s the first show that I’ve been working on where I actually am looking around my house thinking like, the dishwasher — I could probably play that; that bicycle I could probably play and incorporate it into the score, so that was really fun.”

With the new series “Kung Fu,” Sherri Chung becomes the first Asian-American woman responsible for the music of an hour-long network drama — and the choice could not be more perfect.
Chung has moved up through the ranks of television composers, working over the past four years on numerous Greg Berlanti-produced series including “Blindspot,” “Riverdale” and “Batwoman.”
But with the CW’s reimagining of the 1970s classic “Kung Fu,” Chung not only tackles the music of a talked-about series but is rediscovering her own personal heritage as well. “I was equal parts excited and terrified,” she confesses. “This series is celebrating both Chinese culture and Chinese-American culture. It’s breaking down old rules and walls, and creating a new narrative. I feel like I’m really part of that, which is special and totally unexpected.”
Chung is second generation Chinese-American: Her father is Chinese, although born in the U.S.

The taut Tom Hanks action film “Greyhound” is set in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in 1942, as a convoy of battleships dodge enemy torpedos. Practically the entire movie was filmed on sound stages or aboard the docked U.S.S. Kidd in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Visual effects provided the aesthetic reality — but sound effects deliver the visceral, you-are-there quality that makes the scenes whizz and whoosh.
“Greyhound” was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for Best Sound, the first film released by Apple TV+ to receive Oscar attention. (The company’s “Wolfwalkers” was also nominated in the Animated Feature race.) The four sound mixers, Warren Shaw, Michael Minkler, Beau Borders and David Wyman, talked to TheWrap about the aural design of one specific scene, which you can watch below in three different sound versions.
The scene finds Hanks anxiously navigating his gargantuan ship as it is fired upon by two simultaneous torpedos.

The team of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross leads all nominees for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards, the organization of scorers and songwriters active in visual media.
The composing duo (who won an Oscar 10 years ago for “The Social Network” and an Emmy last year for “Watchmen”) received three nominations. They were cited for outstanding original score for a studio film for both their 2020 films, Netflix’s “Mank” and Disney-Pixar’s “Soul.” They share the “Soul” nod with composer Jon Batiste, who contributed the jazz threaded throughout the film.
Reznor and Ross received a third nomination, for outstanding original song for visual media, for their song “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” written for “Mank.”
Scl’s list is notable for the dominance of women composers in the category of outstanding original score for an independent film — three of the five nominees: Lolita Ritmanis for the...

‘The Flight Attendant’ Throws Kaley Cuoco Into a Glossy, Twisty, Energetic Murder Mystery: TV Review
The first few minutes of “The Flight Attendant” are as vivid and glamorous as the life Cassie Bowden (Kaley Cuoco) projects to the world as she travels it. She hops from one blurry night out to the next, trading cities and men with practiced abandon. But when she wakes up in Bangkok after a blurry one-night stand to find her date (Michiel Huisman) horribly murdered, she does what most every rational human would do: she panics. Thousands of miles from home, with no memory of the end of her night, Cassie doesn’t know what else to do but clean up what she can and tear the hell out of there. As her entire life looks ready to collapse in front of her eyes, the camera tilts, the music becomes unbearably sharp, and the focus shifts just enough to let us know that things are about to get very bad,...

First Artists Management, the Los Angeles-based talent agency specializing in composers and music supervisors, is expanding its operations by opening an office in London and hiring two new agents.
Hamish Duff joins First Artists from independent management and publishing company Involved Productions. He will head the London office and oversee all U.K. and European operations, “creating a Transatlantic approach to representation,” said First Artists founder Vasi Vangelos.
Duff joins First Artists with his clients including Solomon Grey, Clark, Alex Baranowski, Will Gregory, Blanck Mass, Hannah Peel, Nico Casal, and The Grandbrothers. This is believed to be the first major U.S. composer agency to establish an overseas office.
Sabrina Hutchinson will also join Vangelos and son Alexander Vangelos in the Los Angeles office. Hutchinson founded entertainment publicity firm Defiant Public Relations in 2011, specializing in sound and music clients and events. Its roster included composers Rolfe Kent, Gordy Haab, Bear McCreary,...

The last time Tom Hanks played the captain of a big ship, he was fighting Somali pirates in “Captain Phillips,” a kinetic, immersive big-screen experience that was nominated for six Academy Awards. He’s now back at sea in “Greyhound,” but this time Hanks plays the commander of a World War II destroyer fighting Nazi submarines in the North Atlantic — and this time the film will be seen on a small screen, because Sony sold it to Apple TV+ for release this week.
That makes “Greyhound” the third recent war-related film to be given a predominantly streaming release, following Spike Lee’s “Da 5 Bloods” and Rod Lurie’s “The Outpost” — and like those two films, this one at times screams out to be seen on a bigger screen than most viewers will be able to give it.
On the other hand, “Greyhound” is pretty modest as war movies go.
