"I think working on screen has made me much more aware of the benefits of economic language and also that you can tell a story with silence and with faces and with body language, as well as with words." – Australian playwright Joanna Murray-Smith

Exclusive: Oscar winner Helen Mirren is set to star as celebrated author Patricia Highsmith in new movie Switzerland, whose plot will mirror one of the Tom Ripley novels for which the American novelist was most famous.
Filmmaker and celebrated music video director Anton Corbijn, whose credits include Control, A Most Wanted Man and The American, is aboard to direct the movie, which FilmNation will be launching for world sales at next week’s EFM.
In Switzerland, Highsmith’s late life solitude in the Swiss Alps is interrupted by Edward, a young literary agent who is sent by the writer’s relentless publishing company to convince her to pen one last novel in her wildly popular Ripley series (which includes the classic The Talented Mr Ripley). Highsmith uses her famously macabre imagination to scare Edward away, but before they know it a collaboration ensues, leaving the world they’ve constructed indistinguishable from their own.

A television adaptation of 2018’s Ladies in Black, a feature film from Bryan Brown, and a television drama from one of the creators of Offspring are among the 21 projects to share in more than $730,000 in development funding from Screen Australia.

Screen Australia’s head of content Sally Caplan said the agency was impressed by the “rigorous creativity” of Australian creators as the industry continued to rebound from Covid-19.
“It’s great to see a number of engaging stories set around iconic milestones in Australian history, from the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, to the social change that took place in the 60s or the recession in the 80s, and I look forward to seeing these projects develop further,” she said.

‘Palm Beach.’
The head-to-head clash between Universal’s Palm Beach and Transmission Films’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan last weekend was far from ideal, but both films are positioned to have leggy runs thanks to word of mouth.
Rachel Ward’s Palm Beach opened in third spot behind the fourth weekend of Disney’s blockbuster The Lion King and the second lap of Universal’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.
Scripted by Ward and Joanna Murray-Smith, the comedy-drama about a group of lifelong friends reuniting to celebrate a special birthday rang up $1.14 million on 250 locations and $1.23 million with previews.
Starring Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, Greta Scacchi, Richard E Grant, Jacqueline McKenzie, Claire van der Boom, Aaron Jeffrey, Heather Mitchell and Matilda Brown, the film opened 3 per cent ahead of Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, which finished with $5.2 million, and at the same level as Jeremy Sims’ Last Cab to Darwin,...

In “Palm Beach,” a Murderer’s Row of vintage yet durably sparkling Australian acting talent, combined with recent Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant, makes for a bright and eventful weekend in the sun at the eponymous northern Sydney enclave. The second feature-length directorial credit from actress-turned-director Rachel Ward following the resonant and well-received 2009 drama “Beautiful Kate,” this breezy yet sturdy dramatic comedy is aimed squarely at a mature demographic that will join the party both Down Under — where the film kicked off the Sydney Film Festival ahead of its Aug. 8 domestic rollout — and abroad, where older audiences are also sure to stargaze.

Olivia Williams and Mark Bazeley are lacerating as the central couple in this stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's film
Marianne (Olivia Williams) and Johan (Mark Bazeley) seem to have it all: careers, money, lovely children, a beautiful house and happiness. When their friends Katerina (Aislinn Sands) and Peter (Shane Attwooll) come to supper they watch in horror as their guests claw at each other like wild cats. Their relationship is falling apart; but Marianne and Johan are rock solid. Or are they?
Where did it all go wrong? Is there a moment that can be identified when we made a bad decision, failed to say the right thing or took the wrong turn? It's a question we all ask about our lives and broken relationships, and one that haunts Joanna Murray-Smith's stage adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's 1972 portrait of marriage. Where Bergman's movie was stark and desolate,...

In an age when many well known women are being betrayed by their even more well known husbands, when Wall Street looks totally male, when young mothers are opting out of the work force in droves, and when single mothers of all persuasions are operating without a safety net, it's easy to wonder whether feminism -- first, second or third wave, or post, post-post as Australian Joanna Murray-Smith in her play The Female of the Species now at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood puts it -- has really had any influence whatsoever. One could easily watch and exit the play and not be sure when it was taking place: though the polemics and diatribes about women zing around the stage like so many ultimate Frisbees, we could be in any of the last four decades, so little have the basic...

Joanna Murray-Smith's farcical satire "The Female of the Species" seems to call for careful casting of a collegial ensemble of skilled comedic actors. The play revolves around a self-centered feminist author—whose works include "Madame Ovary"—when various people whose lives she affected descend on her home. The American premiere opens this week at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, directed by Randall Arney. Annette Bening ("American Beauty," "Hedda Gabler" at the Geffen Playhouse) stars as Margot the author. While Margot struggles with her current manuscript, a former student, played by Merritt Wever ("Cavedweller," New York Theatre Workshop), arrives, bent on revenge. So, coincidentally, does Margot's daughter Tess, played by Mireille Enos ("Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" Broadway revival). David Arquette ("Hamlet 2") plays Tess' husband; Josh Stamberg ("Distracted" at the Roundabout) plays the cabbie who drove Tess there; and Julian Sands ("Stuff Happens" at the Mark Taper Forum) plays Margot's friend and publisher.

The Los Angeles theater scene? It, too, has been buffeted by the economic downturn. The phrase "ticket sales are off 10%" rolls easily off the lips of playhouse administrators. But spirits and resolve remain determinedly high, and there is no talk of converting to dinner theater.
Bigger venues have responded by focusing more precisely on target audiences, stretching budgets as far and creatively as possible, tinkering with pricing strategies and compelling season-ticket campaigns, and using the Internet not only for sales but also for creating buzz on such social networking sites as Facebook and Twitter.
There's also luck of the draw.
The Pantages began selling season tickets to Broadway/L.A. in spring 2008, before the brunt of the financial collapse. Using a "Welcome Home to the Pantages!" theme, inviting back existing subscribers after two years of "Wicked," Broadway/L.A.'s parade of mainstream moneymakers through November lists "Rain," "Mamma Mia!

What happens when a safe, middle class, middle aged marriage suddenly stalls? When the opportunity arises for one life to be renewed but at the expense of the happiness and security of others? Honour, at The Court Theatre from 21st February is a provocative, witty challenge to our notions of domestic honour, homely decency and our belief that love will prevail. Joanna Murray-Smith wrote Honour in 1995 during a writing programme at Colombia University in New York. She wanted to explore a "woman who is left at the very point in her life when she ought to be reaping the benefits of her sacrifice", and recognised that "a story as familiar as this was only going to work if it dug more complexly beyond the stereotypical version".
