Two experimental films executive produced by Steven Soderbergh — Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity and Godfrey Reggio’s Once Within a Time – join Neon’s anticipated Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall in theaters today, a bit of counterprogramming on a weekend dominated by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Divinity, about a dark and creepy future populated by bodybuilders hooked on an elixir for eternal life, “was always made for the theater,” said Alcazar. “But it’s kind of a roll of the dice of what a distributor wants to do with it.” Utopia, which acquired the black-and-white romp — set mostly in a mansion on a desert that looks like the moon — after its Sundance premiere (see Deadline review), opens Divinity at Regal Union Square in NYC, expanding to Los Angeles next week, with a national rollout on 11/3.
There will be opening-weekend Q&As with Alcazar, Soderbergh, star Stephen Dorff and DJ Muggs.

The future looks more purgatorial than paradisiacal in “Divinity,” Eddie Alcazar’s second feature as writer-director. Like the first, 2018’s “Perfect,” this is a cryptic sci-fi body horror allegory where undeniably arresting aesthetics are nonetheless more a symptom of shallow lookism-based values than the intended critique. Stephen Dorff plays a wealthy recluse peddling the titular mystery serum, which promises eternal youth — though, naturally, there may be drawbacks. This invention attracts attention not just from consumers, but from apparent space aliens who arrive to halt its disturbance of the natural order.
Those looking for midnight-movie eccentricity will find much to enjoy in the black-and-white film’s mix of the trippy, queasy and erotic. But as before, the effortfully quirky elements don’t really add up to a cogent whole, resulting in something a mite too reflective of its creator’s background in commercials and game design — a rarefied, stimulating surface without depth.

Of all the comic book adaptations that have flooded film and television in recent years, perhaps none are as ambitious as Riverdale. The CW’s attempt to transport the family-friendly cast of Archie Comics into a dark and soapy teen drama could have been disastrous, but instead, it looks to be a very promising offering, calling to mind some of the network’s greatest hits, like Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.
Here’s six reasons why you should set your DVR for Riverdale, and prepare yourselves for a new fave.
1. A Cast of New, New Hotties (like The O.C. blessed us with)
One of the greatest things a teen drama can do is introduce viewers to a whole new cast of nearly-unknown hotties to swoon over. This is why certain segments of the population still dream of Adam Brody as the ultimate boyfriend or give Jared Leto a pass for almost anything.

This is the fourth studio album by Non Phixion member Ill Bill and is the follow up to the 2008 Hour of Reprisal. Ill Bill has always been a hardcore underground emcee with impecable taste in producers and this album does not vary from that route. In fact the album’s production credits could read as a who’s who Hardcore Hip-Hop’s best producers; DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, El-p, Psycho Les of the Beatnuts and DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill. The list of guests is pretty impressive too; Lil Fame of M.O.P., Jedi Mind Tricks, O.C., Cormega, Shabazz the Disciple and A-Trak. A small point though before I progress on with the review if you are easily offended by bad language, conspiracy theory’s and or hardcore Hip-hop beats then this album is not for you.

It's been almost ten years since the last instalment, but Ice Cube and New Line are apparently keen to revive the slacker Friday franchise. The first Friday was a stoner comedy released in 1995. It's nominal plot involved Chris Tucker's need to get $200 back to local drug dealer Big Worm (Faizon Love) and Cube's face-off with bully Deebo (Tiny Lister), but its easygoing pace allowed for plenty of sitting around on porches and talking nonsense and smoking.Five years later, Next Friday was a broader tale of Cube staying with his cousin Day-Day (Mike Epps) and getting embroiled in some shenanigans against the trio of haplessly inept Latino gangstas next door (this was at the height of Cube's rather public spat with Cypress Hill, context fans). The Cube/Epps double-act continued into Friday After Next, which saw them as mall cops. There was also a short-lived animated series, although none...

Growing up in the '80s, Scarface was always one of those films I watched when I was younger because of the violence and Al Pacino's over-the-top, yet mesmerizing, portrayal of the title character and my enjoyment of it continues to this day. I notice a bit more than I did then, but the point of emphasis remains.
Of course, those were the days of VHS and I remember back in 2003 when Universal finally reissued Scarface on DVD for its 20th anniversary as eBay had been swarmed with bootlegged copies for years selling anywhere from $50-100. I know because I almost bought a copy on several occasions.
Eight years later and not only do fans of this '80s gangster classic no longer have to spend upwards of $100 on a cheap DVD bootleg, but you can spend $35 on a pristine high-definition Blu-ray edition that also includes the DVD edition of...

Chicago soul singer Syl Johnson won’t be pushed around.
When the legendary vocalist heard a track from his song “Different Strokes” sampled in Kanye West and Jay-z’s “The Joy,” he was upset--but he knew what to do. Johnson is a veteran of the copyright infringement suit process after a string of victories over sampling rights with groups like the Wu-Tang Clan, Kid Rock, Michael Jackson and an almost 20-year battle with Cypress Hill. Johnson knew the protocol for getting the credit--and money--that he claimed West’s label Island Def Jam owed him.
But it seems the label, and the rappers, didn’t make good on their end of the deal.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation, directed by Jon Chu, is seemingly getting bigger by the day, and I don't just mean The Rock's muscles. New actors - such as Joseph Mazzello [1] and Bruce Willis [2] - have been joining the cast and the film got a shiny new summer release date [3]. Now, the latest comes from io9 who found some casting calls from the film which reveal a bunch of characters names and specific details on what each is best at, known for and even a few scenes. Again, these should be considered spoilers if they're true. Filming is about to get going on the Jon M. Chu-directed G.I. Joe: Retaliation in Louisiana, and io9 has an interesting scoop about what the film could be about. Be fore-warned, it’s long-winded and possibly filled with spoilers:
Several new Joes, including Walker, Brock and Robyn. Walker is the wise-cracker of the bunch, who’s always making jokes about other guys’ moms. Robyn is a gun-loving weapons expert, who talks lovingly about her latest ultra-high-tech rifle. (Which prompts Walker to say that he loves “girls with guns.”) Brock is from the ‘hood and he listens to a lot of Cypress Hill on his boombox while looking at pictures of his eight-year-old twin girls. (When he takes the picture out of a Ziploc bag, Walker hopes he’s bringing out some of his famous pistachio cheese balls.)

If you loved G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, these past two years of sequel pre-production have been agony. The news has been so slow in coming that it just doesn't quite get its buzz on, even when Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson tweets a photo of himself in Roadblock training. The biggest rush we've had is the rumor that Bruce Willis might sign on as the G.I. Joe, but for such a highly anticipated sequel, it's been all quiet on the Hasbro front. Well, I'm happy to say that thanks to the gang at io9, we have a peek into the new characters of G.I. Joe 2, and an idea of what they'll be facing now that Zartan is in the White House. (Spoiler: It's not good.) This is a casting call, so all information is subject to change, but this is bound to be pretty damn close to...

Plot details of upcoming action film "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" have allegedly been obtained by io9. According to the site, the script which is written by "Zombieland" scribe duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will be strongly related to the original movie.
It was also reported that some new Joes named Walker, Brock and Robyn will be featured in the sequel. Walker is described as [Spoiler Alert!] the wisecracker of the gang who loves to joke about other guy's mother. Robyn is a female gun-loving weapons expert, who always talks about her latest ultra-high-tech rifle. Meanwhile, Brock is described as a sentimental guy who listens a lot of Cypress Hill on his boombox while looking at photos of his 8-year-old twin daughters.
Robyn, Brock and another Joe will reportedly be sent on duties to take refuge in Brock's old neighborhoos where they meet a tattooed stone-cold badass named Stacks. Stacks and Brocks are like brothers,...

Here are some spoiler filled plot details for GI Joe: Retaliation. The details come from a casting call that io9 got their hands on. Earlier we reported that Bruce Willis has joined the film. The sequel is being directed by John Chu and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. If cast, Willis would join Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson and RZA in the action film. Filming is slated to begin in New Orleans this month to meet the scheduled June 29, 2012 release date.
The details below are full of Spoilers so read at your own risk. Beware a lot of the details may be speculation so take this with a grain of salt:

Hot off the heels of the announcement that Bruce Willis will be joining the cast of Jon Chu's Gi Joe: Retaliation we have the following details from io9. Apparently all of this info comes from a recent casting call but some sounds like speculation to me. Anyway, here is what they say.. Several new Joes, including Walker, Brock and Robyn. Pete Wentz is excited for Black Cards' Lolla debut this weekend.

Before 1991, when and if it was used, the term "lollapalooza" was merely a way to describe something that was really, really awesome. Then Jane's Addiction frontman and modern shaman Perry Farrell wrapped his spindly arms around the anachronistic term and molded it into the modern definition of an American music festival.
When the gates open Friday (August 5) on this year's edition of Lollapalooza, all the names and faces will be different from that first touring edition of the granddaddy of American festivals, but one thing will remain unchanged: the music.
Asked if he ever imagined Lolla would still be around 20 years down the line (the first touring edition ran from 1991 to 2003 before being reborn as a destination event in Chicago in 2005), co-founder and Lolla partner Marc Geiger said,...

The 8th annual touring rap festival Rock The Bells announced it's lineup today, and it will be headlined by Lauryn Hill who coincidentally celebrates her 36th birthday today. Though Hill has been notoriously shy of the spotlight, she will not only be returning to the festival (she delivered one of last year's most applauded acts) but she will be performing her landmark album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in its entirety.
Ms. Lauryn Hill will be joined by several other artists who will be performing classic albums in their entirety. The roster includes Nas performing Illmatic, Mos Def and Talib Kweli performing their Black Star album, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah doing Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Mobb Deep performing The Infamous, Cypress Hill doing Black Sunday, and Gza doing Liquid Swords.

Lauryn Hill, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep and Cypress Hill — this year's Rock the Bells festival looks to be a hip-hop fan's dream.
Last year Guerilla Union invited headlining artists to play their classic albums in full for concertgoers, and it looks land they are continuing the trend for 2011. During the four festival dates, which kick off in San Bernardino, California, on August 20 at the San Manuel Amphitheater, Lauryn Hill is scheduled to play her 1998 multi-platinum, Grammy-winning The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill from beginning to end. Nas is tapped to perform his 1994 classic, Illmatic.
"For years, people have been asking me to do Illmatic in so many ways, from stage plays to movies to books, but the time wasn't right. Where music is going now, the time is right," Nas said in a statement.

Indio, California — Eschewing the big light shows of the weekend's earlier main-stage acts, Arcade Fire stripped down for Saturday night's Coachella crowd to let their sunny sing-alongs shine through.
They bookended their set with cuts from their Grammy-winning The Suburbs, starting with "Month of May" and closing out with "Sprawl II."
Through it all, the crowd kept bopping, belting out "Rebellion (Lies)," and both "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)" and "Neighborhood 3 (Power Out)."
The recent surprise Album of the Year winners expressed their gratitude several times, admitting, "It's pretty intimidating to be up here in front of all you people," and later professing, "We don't take this for granted, even for a second."

Will Channing Tatum be singing and dancing in G.I. Joe 2? Looking at Paramount's shortlist of directors to helm the sequel to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, it seems the answer is yes. At the very least, G.I. Joe 2 may be going for a music video vibe. Both Jon M. Chu and F. Gary Gray have a body of work directing musicians and dancers.
One contender is Jon Chu who directed Justin Bieber's concert bio-doc Never Say Never 3D, Step Up 3D and Step Up 2 The Streets.
F. Gary Gray is also in contention; his best film is 2003's The Inside Job but the majority of his work is with music videos (Outkast, Ice Cube, R. Kelly, Babyface, Cypress Hill). In fact, even with Gray is directing feature films, a musician-actor is in the cast (2009's Law Abiding Citizen starred Jamie Foxx, 2007's Be Cool was about...

Since music and drugs go together like juice boxes and motherlove, NME has compiled a list of the 50 Druggiest Albums Ever. Scottish alt-rockers Primal Scream, known for their smack habits, were responsible for the druggiest album of all time, Screamadelica, edging out The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St., and The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat. Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd did crack the top ten with The Piper At The Gates of Dawn, perhaps representing the Floyd oeuvre as a whole, as no other albums were listed. The only rap album landing in the top ten is Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III, on the strength of Weezy's speech-slurring purple drank concoction. Cypress Hill, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott and Dr. Dre were further back in the pack. One notable omission among many is Bob Marley, or any reggae artist for that matter. February 11 is a pretty crazy crossroads day for birthdays, as it represents the changing of the biological calendar for the likes of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland and "Twilight" star Taylor Lautner. But for the purposes of the MTV Newsroom Blog, there's only one celebration we're having today, and it's for Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda. The mutli-talented rapper, musician and producer is now 34 years old, so make sure his slice of cake has the frosting rose on it and that his Mylar balloons are well-inflated.
Shinoda first made an impact in the music world as the rapper on Linkin Park's nü-metal debut Hybrid Theory. But as the band's sound and world view evolved (which seemed to happen almost immediately after the group got big), so did Shinoda's approach to his role (and to music as a whole). Though the official lineup won't be released until April and none of the official sources have confirmed it, Eminem is rumored to be one of the headliners at this summer's Lollapalooza festival. According to the Chicago Tribune's Greg Kot, Eminem will join Foo Fighters and Muse as three of the six headliners for one of the summer's biggest music festivals, which will again take place in Grant Park in Chicago (this time on August 5-7).
If Slim Shady does indeed play the festival (and again, it has not been confirmed by Em's people nor by the festival's promoters), he will not only continue a recent tradition of having a true crossover megastar as a headliner (taking the spot owned by Lady Gaga in 2010) but also will put another notch in the belt of great hip-hop moments at the festival. The first weekend of 2011 was pretty lackluster (for some reason, people didn't flock to "Season of the Witch," which will undoubtedly become a cult classic that will be far better respected years down the line — it'll be the "Blade Runner" of medieval sorcery movies), but this weekend promises to blow the doors off your local cinema (it helps that there's an extra day in there thanks to Monday's holiday). This weekend marks the opening of a handful of new films, including the Ron Howard-directed comedy "The Dilemma," the Paul Giamatti-lead drama "Barney's Version" and the Norwegian gangster flick "A Somewhat Gentle Man." It's an especially fruitful weekend if you like watching dudes getting kicked in the head, as you have the opportunity to see Tony Jaa's "Ong Bak 3" as well as the splashy action comedy "The Green Hornet."

Meat Loaf's Espn Fantasy Football Charity League team has overcome a 43-point halftime deficit to defeat Jerry Cantrell’s Jc Aroma Of Tacoma 224-214 in the championship of the Alice in Chains & Friends Fantasy Football Charity League at the end of the NFL’s regular season.
According to Espn, this means that Meat Loaf’s chosen charity, The Painted Turtle, will receive all the proceeds from an online auction of items donated by all the league’s participants and others.
Going under the hammer are CDs, books and T-shirts donated by Meat Loaf, a guitar from Slayer, a signed Jamie Moyer Philadelphia Phillies jersey donated by Duff McKagan, a Fender Strat signed by Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and posters signed by Alice in Chains and Cypress Hill.
