ITV has confirmed that the fourteenth series of Vera will be the last. The details of the show ending are right here.
Brenda Blethyn’s career has been prolific, from playing timid librarian Alison opposite Simon Callow in Andrew Norriss and Richard Fegen’s wonderful 1980s sitcom Chance In A Million to her BAFTA winning turn as Cynthia in Mike Leigh’s 1996 film Secrets And Lies.
For over a decade, Blethyn has played the softly spoken yet dogged detective Vera Stanhope, created by author Ann Cleeves.
Stanhope, always kitted out in her trusty trenchcoat and hat, and her team, who include DC Joe Ashworth (David Leon), Kenmy Lockhart (Jon Morrison), DC Mark Edwards (Riley Jones) and DS Aiden Heady (Kenny Doughty) solve crimes in and around Northumberland.
ITV has now confirmed that the 14th series of Vera will be the last, though.

They say L.A. has no history, and yet, thankfully there are still enough vestiges of the Laurel Canyon folk-rock scene of the 1970s to fully stock a throwback series like “Daisy Jones & the Six.” Set among the flowy dresses and shaggy mustaches of the city’s rock ‘n’ roll heyday, the series gives aspiring rockers Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne, played by Riley Keough and Sam Claflin, plenty of classic places to hang out, giving the gauzy musical series a grounding in a specific time and place.
The show’s production designer, Jessica Kender, explains that in some cases, it was more important to capture the feeling of the era than to use the exact location. A perfect example is the front of the Six’s house in Laurel Canyon, which was designed to evoke the iconic cover of “Crosby, Stills & Nash” with the band sitting on a...

Music star Bad Bunny will host wrestling powerhouse WWE’s Backlash event in Puerto Rico this May.
The May 6 show will air live from the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, marking the first WWE premium live event to take place in Puerto Rico since January 2005.
“In 2005 when I was a kid, I wasn’t able to attend New Year’s Revolution at el Coliseo,” said Bad Bunny. “Finally, 18 years later WWE returns to the island with a massive event, and this time I won’t miss it.”
On the company’s calendar of premium live events, previously known as pay-per-views, Backlash traditionally follows WrestleMania, WWE’s equivalent of the Super Bowl. This year, WrestleMania 39, also promoted as “WrestleMania Goes Hollywood,” will be held as a two-night event on April 1 and 2 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

Trends in documentary-making have shifted radically since Nicolas Philibert’s “Être et Avoir” was a surprise arthouse hit two decades ago: That sweetly observational little film, following the ins and outs of a village elementary school over the course of a year, seems a quaintly modest proposition beside today’s more slickly immersive and narrativized nonfiction breakouts. If times have changed, however, Philibert has not. His latest, “On the Adamant,” finds him once more examining the human workings of a care-based institution from a reserved but compassionate distance, avoiding commentary and editorialization in favor of real-life character portraiture.
It turns out to be the right approach for the institution under scrutiny: The Adamant, a day-care center in central Paris for adults with a variety of mental disorders, offering its visitors a range of therapy, education and cultural activity. The human subjects here are both expressive and highly vulnerable, open to the low-key,...

Heavy Consequence contributor Greg Prato is also the author of several rock books. His latest, titled Lanegan, pays tribute to late singer Mark Lanegan. Below he introduces exclusive excerpts from Lanegan, as told by the vocalist’s musical peers.
As learned throughout his autobiography, Sing Backwards and Weep: A Memoir, few lived their life as hard as Mark Lanegan did. After apparently overcoming a near-fatal episode with Covid in 2021 — I interviewed over 20 musicians, friends, and admirers of his music for my latest book, simply titled Lanegan. Below are excerpts from the book, which touch upon various eras of his remarkable career.
Kim Thayil (Soundgarden): We played shows with the Trees, and Mark Pickerel used to joke about how the Trees were compared to the Doors – because on the early Trees records, people would describe Lanegan as having a voice that was reminiscent of Jim Morrison. And in our early days,...

With Major League Wrestling making its debut tonight on Reelz, the ad-supported cable channel hopes to recreate the impossible. Launched in 2006 as Reelz Channel, then best known as home to Leonard Maltin’s “Maltin on Movies” and hosting the Visual Effects Society Awards, it went through many iterations — until recently, none terribly successful. A year ago, it ranked a dim 51 in cable primetime among its key demo for advertising, adults 25-54.
And then, a miracle. On July 22, 2022, Reelz premiered “On Patrol Live,” its revival of the format behind canceled A&e hit “Live P.D.” Today, Reelz is No. 19 and its year-to-year ratings rose a whopping 274 percent

John Morrison was 10 years old when he started making beats on his Casio Rz-1, the same drum machine sampler that Prince Paul used to produce for De La Soul’s landmark 3 Feet High and Rising. Three years later, in 1993, Morrison heard Digable Planets’ debut album, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) — and it changed the way he viewed music forever.

In 1999, I wrote a book called “My Greatest Day in Show Business” that didn’t exactly fly off the shelves but that I was hugely proud of nonetheless. It featured 75 stories from celebrities ranging from Jack Lemmon to John Ritter, Katey Sagal to Judith Light, about the greatest day in their careers. Some were hilarious, others bittersweet, still others inspiring. But no one’s was better than the tale told to me by Cindy Williams, the beloved “Laverne & Shirley” star who died last Wednesday at 75.
Of all the people I spoke to, nobody was kinder, funnier and more down-to-earth than Cindy. Within 30 seconds of our phone conversation starting, it felt like we’d known each other forever. She was, in fact, the sweetest person in the public eye I’ve ever interviewed, and the only one I spoke to for that book whom I singled out for thanks in the acknowledgements.

Cindy Williams, the energetic actress who appeared in a pair of Oscar best picture nominees before starring as the idealistic Shirley Feeney on the beloved ABC sitcom Laverne & Shirley, has died. She was 75.
Williams died in Los Angeles on Wednesday after a brief illness, her children, Zak and Emily Hudson, said in a statement released Monday.
“The passing of our kind, hilarious mother, Cindy Williams, has brought us insurmountable sadness that could never truly be expressed,” the statement said. “Knowing and loving her has been our joy and privilege. She was one of a kind, beautiful, generous and possessed a brilliant sense of humor and a glittering spirit that everyone loved.”
After popping up as a pot-smoking hippie in the Maggie Smith-starring Travels With My Aunt (1972), one of the last films directed by George Cukor, Williams took her first big turn in the spotlight when she portrayed Laurie,...

Writer/director Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical 2000 film "Almost Famous" captures the magical allure of the music industry, complete with the diehard artists and fans who dedicate their lives to it. Kate Hudson stars in the movie as Penny Lane, a young blonde woman who bewitches the up-and-coming band Stillwater, along with the wide-eyed, impressionable young reporter covering their journey (Patrick Fugit's William Miller), while the band is on tour in 1973. In the film, she explains that she isn't a groupie. Lane clarifies, "Groupies sleep with rock stars because they want to be near someone famous. We are here because of the music, we inspire the music. We are band-aides."
The traditionally judgmental perspective of what a groupie entails is explored through Lane's passion for the music, freedom of living on the road, and learning to love without commitment despite still facing heartbreak. She's a complicated character with complicated beliefs,...

Vera really likes to keep us waiting. Series 11 of this beloved British detective series began broadcasting back in summer 2021, and after four episodes were released between then and January 2022, there’s been a year-long unexplained wait for the last two feature-length episodes of the series, which finally began airing on ITV1 on Sunday 15th January.
But like buses, you wait for one series of Vera and two arrive at once, as straight after Series 11 finishes we’ll be getting four more weekly episodes making up Series 12 as well, starting on 29th January.
Not only that, there’s another Vera instalment, The Rising Tide, on the way later this year, based on Ann Cleeves’s latest Vera novel of the same name.

Rock’n’roll musicians have a habit of thinking of themselves like secular gods, but the truth is they’re not infallible. No matter how successful a band may or may not have been in the past, there’s never any guarantee their next record will live up to the heights they’ve previously scaled. Sometimes, everything that once went right just all goes wrong.
There are often extenuating circumstances, of course. Band members may leave due to death, drugs or just good old-fashioned “musical differences”, or an ambitious new direction may turn out to be more like a swerve into oncoming traffic.
Whatever the cause, the fact remains that just because an album has the name of a classic band slapped across the cover, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the album itself will be a classic.

Oliver Stone was born in 1946. Jim Morrison was born in 1943. Stone was 19 when The Doors first formed in 1965. Morrison was 22. By 1991, a 45-year-old Stone had established himself as a notable and hard-striking American Boomer auteur with films like "Platoon," "Wall Street," and "Born on the Fourth of July." By 1991, Morrison had been dead for 20 years.
Stone's wild, drug-soaked biopic "The Doors" was released to modest success and a warm critical response (the film currently holds a mere 57 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Using multiple film formats and a freewheeling narrative, "The Doors" certainly captured the sweaty, drugged-out experience of attending a concert in the late 1960s, but didn't offer too much beyond the death wish-inflected arc possessed by the band's doomed lead singer.

Already missing Twitter trolling? Short on material to spark resentment since the midterm elections ended? Here’s a list that’ll get you in the Thanksgiving spirit. It’s not an exhaustive one, but if you really want to replicate the family feast experience, you can get liquored up and argue about it. There’s something here for every taste – even if your taste is on the “Dahmer” end of the spectrum.

When Baz Luhrmann‘s “Elvis” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in late May, the buzz for its young star Austin Butler grew quickly to a deafening din. The film’s reception was punctuated by a 12-minute standing ovation, and the conventional wisdom was that the Oscar — and the Golden Globe and the SAG Award, for that matter — was Butler’s to lose. As of this writing, the 31-year-old is the third choice in Gold Derby’s combined Best Actor odds at 9/2, trailing top pick Brendan Fraser for “The Whale” at 69/20 and Colin Farrell for “The Banshees of Inisherin” at 4/1.
So what does Oscar history tell us about his chances of getting nominated for “Elvis”? When it comes to Butler, he will be looking to follow in the grand tradition of actors who have transformed themselves into real-life music legends. And he surely delivers an incandescent performance as Elvis Aron Presley.

Eric Appel's "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story," coming to the Roku Channel on November 4, 2022, tells the 20 true story of Alfred Matthew Yankovic, better known to the world as "Weird" Al Yankovic, as he rose to fame "inventing new lyrics for songs that already exist," as characters repeat often. The film covers the events of Yankovic's life from his beleaguered childhood and his first comedic recordings that he mailed into the Dr. Demento Show in the late '70s, to his record contracts and immediate quintuple platinum records in 1983 and 1984.

Let the title fool you. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story is the improbable tale of a young boy who becomes a rock god by playing a polka instrument. And former wizard Daniel Radcliffe brings an entirely new kind of magic to his portrayal of “Weird” Al Yankovic—the type the Weasley twins excelled at. This is not a biopic of a musical parodist. It is a spoof of musical biopics, and this one’s about a lunatic with a strap-on orchestra deluding himself that he’s the life of the party. He fakes it until he makes it, throws it away, and leaves someone else to clean up his mess.
In their respective roles in prior, formulaic rock biopics, Rami Malek’s Freddie Mercury and Taron Egerton’s Elton John are extremely professional. By contrast, Radcliffe throws himself into the character like he’s never lost amateur standing. He goes full tilt.

Over the past 131 years, musical luminaries like Duke Ellington, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young have all graced the Carnegie Hall stage. And on Saturday evening, “Weird Al” Yankovic finally joined their ranks when his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent Ill-Advised Vanity Tour touched down in New York for its grand finale.
Just about five minutes into the set, Yankovic took a pause to soak it in, and even wipe away what appeared to be a genuine tear. “Let me just take a moment to enjoy this,” he...

Years before he flaunted his versatility in "The Doors," "Tombstone" and "Heat," it appeared as though Val Kilmer was going to be one of Hollywood's go-to comedy stars. Though David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker's "Top Secret!" flopped at the box office in 1984, those who were wise enough to rush out and catch it walked away impressed with the actor's ability to deadpan one moment and switch on his rockstar swagger the next. He followed that up the next year with an immensely appealing performance as troublemaking genius Chris Knight in Martha Coolidge's hysterical "Real Genius."
Kilmer's arrival was as sudden as it was welcome. Unlike many stars, he hadn't paid his dues via two-line roles in schlocky exploitation flicks or sitcoms. He just showed up, and we instantly adored him. If you had to guess, you figured he'd studied improv at Second City or The Groundlings.

The mountaineering community is mourning the loss of a trailblazer. The body of American ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson was found Sept. 28 on Nepal's Mount Manaslu, two days after the elite climber went missing, Sachindra Yadav, an expedition liaison office, told The New York Times. She was 49. Jim Morrison, Nelson's romantic and climbing partner, noted that after reaching the summit of 26,781-foot Mount Manaslu—which is the eighth-highest peak in the world—the pair were skiing down when disaster struck. "On September 26th at 10:42 am we reached the true summit of Manaslu in tough conditions," he wrote on Instagram Sept. 28, after Nepalese authorities confirmed...

Like many '60s rock stars, Jim Morrison lived fast, died young, and became a music icon. Known for his soothing voice, poetic lyrics, and public antics, The Doors' leadman was celebrated for pushing boundaries with his music and lyrics after bursting onto the rock scene in the late '60s. In addition to pushing boundaries on stage, Morrison exposed himself on stage, mocked concert audiences, and experimented with hard drugs. In 1971, "The Lizard King" joined the tragic 27 club when he died of heart failure in a french bathtub. It's suspected that drugs contributed to Morrison's death, but an autopsy wasn't performed.
Never one to shy away from a controversial event or character, Oliver Stone co-wrote and directed "The Doors," a biopic focused on Morrison and his chaotic life. After portraying an elite navy pilot in the '80s hit, "Top Gun," Val Kilmer grew his hair, slid into skintight leather pants,...

Some people have a knack for putting themselves at the center of history. Daniel Fields was just a middle-class kid from Queens, but — during the second half of the 20th century — he discovered the Ramones, burned down the Beatles and seemingly had sex with every gay man at Harvard in the early 1960s. He was, to quote John Cameron Mitchell, “Handmaiden to the gods, midwife to some of the most important people in music.”
And Fields will be happy to tell you all about it, recounting his glory days with the bluntness of a grandfather recording his life story for posterity and the candidness of a 75-year-old man who’s remembering it for himself. So why, after 100 minutes of listening to him ramble on about everything he’s seen and everything he’s snorted, do we still have no idea what he actually did? Why, at the end of Brendan Toller...

7.1 Jesus Gonna Be Here
Ah, summer. Crappy weather, sport everywhere you look, and the rapid descent into darkness that begins in mid-June. Fortunately, for those of us so inclined, summer is also the start of our annual trip to a steamy little town called Bon Temps. A place where vampires, werewolves and gory death are a welcome break from the slow suffocation of a litany of comically bad sports results and gallons of rain. A trip that always delivers a ton of gratuitous nudity, buckets of blood and a damn good time. But this year, the trip is different; this year heralds our final visit to the True Blood-verse.
Premiere episodes are always trepidatious affairs. Aside from being assigned the task of wrapping up the cliff-hangers from previous...

San Diego — Chris Evans doesn't post on Twitter often, but when the actor saw the recent Rolling Stone cover featuring Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, he sent out a short missive: "Bad move Rolling Stone."
Evans appeared Saturday at Comic-Con to promote his new film "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Asked about the tweet, he said he felt the magazine intentionally glamorized Tsarnaev. The 19-year-old is accused of setting off two bombs with his brother during the marathon in April. Three people died and more than 250 were injured in the attack.
"I just felt on that Rolling Stone cover he looked like Jim Morrison," Evans said. "He looked like a rock star. It glorified him.

A Massachusetts State Police sergeant has been relieved of duty for leaking behind-the-scenes photos of the Dzhokhar Tsarnaev manhunt to Boston magazine. Sean Murphy had been outraged over what he perceived as the glamorization of the Boston Marathon bomber by Rolling Stone, which chose Tsarnaev as its August issue cover boy. The controversy-stirring image -- featuring the 19-year-old with shaggy hair, facial scruff and wide-eyed stare -- has prompted comparisons to the publication's past covers of The Doors' Jim Morrison and killer Charles Manson. Doc Holliday, Jim Morrison, Bruce Wayne and now ... Mark Twain!

Jim Morrison died 42 years ago today (July 3).
The iconic lead singer of the Doors tragically passed away from complications from drug and alcohol abuse in Paris in 1971. The Doors' songs such as "Break on Through (To the Other Side)," "Light My Fire," and "Hello, I Love You," exemplify the spirit of the late '60s.
Morrison was sadly one of the first casualties of what became known as the "27 Club," which includes other too-soon-gone performers such as Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, who passed away at the age of 27.
Despite his short life, Morrison will always be remembered as a rock icon and poet.
