“As a huge Trekkie myself, I am always tempted to use the theme, to install all these little Easter eggs,” reveals “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” composer Nami Melumad. about the most exciting parts of the show’s score; the orchestral melodies that duck and dive between robust action drama and beloved old-school flourishes like the instantly recognizable original series theme. For our recent webchat she adds, “I think for all composers who work on ‘Trek’ you have to be very aware of when you’re choosing to use the ‘Star Trek’ theme. You want to bring it when it’s earned, otherwise, if you just continue to use it all the time, it loses its effectiveness. It’s like the icing on the cake, it’s like something we’re all always so looking forward to.” We talked with Melumad as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the...

A fun piece of trivia: the theme music to "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is actually a wholly unoriginal piece of music. It is a combination of the opening strains of the original "Star Trek" theme song composed by Alexander Courage, and the main theme for "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" composed by Jerry Goldsmith. The "Next Generation" theme merely re-orchestrated the "Tos" and "Tmp" scores a little bit. This wasn't always the plan, however. Dennis McCarthy, frequent composer for "Next Generation" (he worked on 88 episodes), wrote an alternate theme that was replaced at the last minute.
McCarthy also composed the score for "Encounter at Farpoint," the show's pilot episode. McCarthy's sound would come to define "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and dictate how other composers would move forward with the Paramount orchestra. Every Trekkie likely has, in their very DNA, the tense moment of suspense music that McCarthy so...

Louis Leterrier's new film "Fast X," the eleventh film in the "Fast and Furious" saga, may not have been spoiled yet for you, dear reader. Although you may have heard that the film features at least one -- possibly more -- cameo from known "Furious" characters, there's actually an appearance from someone you likely aren't expecting at all.
Yes, this is a post about a one-off comedian cameo that will likely stay safely within the walls of the film in which he appears. A star of "Bodies Bodies Bodies" and "Saturday Night Live" makes a brief appearance in one scene of "Fast X" as a drug-adjacent, fast-talking varlet that some of our heroes encounter. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Pete Davidson.
Davidson's character is a former associate of Ramsey (Mathalie Emmanuel), the stalwart computer hacker. Because of a massive disaster at the head of the film, Ramsey,...

"Fast X" is very much the beginning of the end of the road for the fambly. This is arguably the movie in the franchise with the most behind-the-scenes problems and setbacks since "Furious 7," with director Louis Leterrier coming in and even rewriting most of the script while replacing Justin Lin mere weeks into shooting, which signals to many that it's just time to wrap up the long-running blockbuster film series.
The latest sequel has some of the most ridiculous moments in the franchise, an all-time great action set piece, and arguably its biggest villain yet in Dante. Jason Momoa essentially plays genderfluid Bugs Bunny brought to live-action, a true master of chaos who is street ahead of everyone else, the kind of villain with a big grudge against Dom and the fambly -- which is always the best kind of villain.
The plot takes place a few years after "F9,...

In 2005, John Cena rapped that we couldn't see him. In 2023, he couldn't be more visible. Cena, a former WWE wrestler, philanthropist, and seemingly all-around decent dude, has become one of cinema's more amusing and gregarious movie stars in recent years, appearing in light comedies and steely action films with equal aplomb. He hosts game shows, raps, and can speak Mandarin. As a screen presence, he is friendly, goofy, and quite good at playing lovable lugs and clueless dads. While he did appear in explosion-forward flicks like "12 Rounds" early in his career, Cena has rarely been sold as an action hero; he would sooner crop up in "Trainwreck" or "Fred: The Movie" than, say, "The Scorpion King."
As such, the character of Jakob, whom Cena plays in "F9" and "Fast X," is a change of pace for him. In "F9," Jakob was essentially a villain, acting out against Dom Toretto...

Jason Momoa knows his "Fast X" character doesn't look like other villains. In a movie series full of tank-top-clad bald dudes, stylish suits and sunglasses, and whatever was happening to Charlize Theron's hair at one point, Dante Reyes (Momoa) stands out. The character made waves when a first image was released, showing Momoa wearing a purple silk shirt, a hair scrunchy, a pair of sunglasses with a totally clashing glasses chain, a spiky necklace, a pastel fingernail polish, and enough accessories to singlehandedly slow down a Tsa line.
Fans were instantly intrigued by Dante's look, and in the most recent issue of Total Film magazine, the actor spoke about the motivation behind his character's accoutrements -- which were apparently all his idea. The actor reportedly pitched a lot of ideas for the character, from dark contact lenses that gave his eyes a shark-like look to a pastel lavender...

This post contains spoilers for episode 6, season 3 of "Star Trek: Picard."
The most recent season of "Star Trek: Picard" initially sold itself as essentially a reunion special. Early trailers boasted that most of the main cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" would return, including Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, Jonathan Frakes, LeVar Burton, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner (even though Data had died several times over). While some Trekkies may have been excited about the promise of a reunion, other more cautiously pessimistic fans could immediately envision a plodding nostalgia-fest wherein characters do nothing but repeat old lines of dialogue, walk around on old sets, and become weepy over the tricorders they used several decades prior.
Quite mercifully, in the new season's first five episodes, the nostalgia has been relegated to a mere steady drip. The "Next Generation" characters have been introduced slowly, making the reunions more organic. Additionally, they...

“Star Trek” has always been known for its progressive casting on screen. But over seven live-action series and 13 movies dating back more than half a century, the science-fiction franchise has never had a woman composer – until now.
Nami Melumad, who has been scoring the animated “Star Trek: Prodigy,” has stepped up a notch and is scoring weekly episodes of “Strange New Worlds,” the new Paramount Plus series that chronicles the voyages of the pre-Captain Kirk Enterprise.
“It’s been a very busy few months,” says the Israeli-born composer, who has been writing an average of 45 minutes of music per episode of “Strange New Worlds” and is now on her 14th episode of “Prodigy” for Nickelodeon.
Melumad’s “Star Trek” adventures actually began on “Short Treks,” the 10-part series of shorts exploring various aspects of the “Trek” universe. She scored “Q&a,” the 2019 episode that featured Anson Mount as Christopher Pike,...
