"Band of Brothers" was one of the first shows to bridge the gap between television and film. It took the baton from Steven Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan" and improved on it, at least regarding character and story. There is nothing in "Band of Brothers" that is quite so arrestingly savage as Spielberg's genre-changing Omaha Beach sequence. However, HBO's 10-part miniseries is still a thunderous account of World War II, replete with many sad and brutal moments.
Based on Stephen Ambrose's non-fiction book of the same name, "Band of Brothers" follows "Easy" Company of the 101st Airborne Division through Normandy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the German interior. Human interest is somewhat diluted by the sheer number of characters involved, but there are focalizers in the ranks, namely Maj. Richard Winters (Damian Lewis) and Capt. Lewis Nixon (Ron Livingston). These men and their peers are quickly battle-hardened, facing the enemy in fields,...

A Violent Man is Ross McCall’s directorial debut from his own script, and stars Craig Fairbrass, Stephen Odubola (Blue Story), Jason Flemyng and Zoe Tapper (Liar).
Bleak, brutal and brilliant, A Violent Man showcases a towering performance from Fairbrass, never better and riding high off acclaim from his recent string of well-reviewed thrillers including Villain and Muscle. The film sees Fairbrass teaming up again with the producers of Villain, who are also behind Boiling Point starring Stephen Graham.
The film features an impressive supporting cast including Jason Flemyng and Stephen Odubola, who is outstanding as Fairbrass’ troubled cellmate Marcus. A Violent Man is a gritty portrayal of the harsh realities of prison life, with a brooding score by two time BAFTA award-winning composer Austin Wintory.

Craig Fairbrass’s impressive screen presence as a longtime convict carries this shadowy take on life behind bars
Craig Fairbrass is an actor who may lack range but has an undeniable screen presence. He emits an almost radioactive glow with his hulking, jolie-laide physiognomy, amplified by an abraded, East End baritone that seldom rises above a menacing whisper. That charisma goes a long way in this prison drama, written and directed by Ross McCall, which consists of a weary procession of scenes in which Fairbrass’s longtime convict Steve Mackelson growls, glowers and recites monologues full of self-serious pauses about prison life and how hard he thinks he is.
All this seems to take place in one or two rooms in one of Her Majesty’s establishments where budget cuts appear to have deprived the cells of lightbulbs. A moderate amount of backlighting is supplied by a strip of window high in one black wall.

Fascinating backroom politics circa WWII are undermined by banal marital melodrama in Danish director Christina Rosendahl’s “The Good Traitor,” resulting in a so-so period drama that raises more questions than it answers. The film centers on the life of diplomat-gone-rogue Henrik Kauffmann, who was posted to Washington, D.C., as Danish Ambassador in 1939. When the Nazis occupy Denmark on April 9, 1940, Kauffmann declares himself the only true representative of the free Danish people and goes on to make a number of high-risk autonomous decisions that, in the long run, help to free his homeland. Unfortunately, the details of Kauffmann’s wheeling and dealing are continually undercut by the film’s concentration on his rather unusual personal life, rendered here in trite narrative clichés.
During a long and distinguished foreign service career, Kauffmann enabled the U.S. to install strategic military bases on Greenland (an autonomous territory of Denmark) during WWII.
