- Graduated from Central School of Speech and Drama in London in 1969.

- Attended Ripon College from 1962 to 1966 and majored in philosophy, but also appeared in dramas there, including the title role of Antigone and Rosalind in "As You Like It." She received the Ripon College Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984 and an Honorary Doctorate of Performing Arts in 1988.
- Part of ACT's acting company from 1970-1972; later returned as an actor in 1986 and joined the conservatory faculty as a core member through 1992. Just recently she appeared in their production of Buried Child."
- Played Stella to Faye Dunaway's Blanche DuBois and Jon Voight's Stanley Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1970s Los Angeles.
- McCain earned an MA Psychology degree in 2000 from the California Institute of Integral Studies. She now serves on the board of the New Mexico Local branch of SAG/AFTRA and is a member of New Mexico Women in film.

- A stage actress by nature, she first appeared on Broadway in Woody Allen's "Play It Again, Sam".
