In 2006, you could scarcely go a day without someone shouting, “This is Sparta!” in your face. The iconic line by Gerard Butler’s King Leonidas in Zack Snyder’s 300 became a battle cry for anyone looking to punt an irritant off a cliff. Out of sight. Out of mind. According to sources, a 300 TV series is developing at Warner Bros. TV. It’s early days for what Deadline says could be a prequel to the 2006 film, and fans are already theorizing about the plot, which is unknown. While deals are not in place, we hear Zack and Deborah Snyder could reunite with Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Bernie Goldmann, and Wesley Coller of Stone Quarry for the newly announced project.

I don’t want to spoil 300, but I think it’s fair to say it had a double-edged ending with the feeling being that there was still hope even if the war was far from over. 300: Rise of an Empire continues the story, but also prequels it and runs alongside it as the focus turns to Greece and the coming together of a nation to take on Xerxes and his Persian forces.
300: Rise of an Empire focuses mainly on Themistocles (Sullivan Stapleton) taking the battle to the Persian Army on the naval battlefield. Battling against Artemisia (Eva Green) Xerxes’ (Rodrigo Santoro) trusted naval leader he must outwit her and the huge forces she has to take on his more meagre offering.

300: Rise of an Empire - Warner Bros. - Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD Director: Noam Murro Cast: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, Rodrigo Santoro. Full cast + crew 300: Rise of an Empire has got brawny men generating tidal waves of CGI blood, but it's weirdly lacking the heart and underdog camaraderie that made the first movie such a hit. The plot this time is a bit convoluted since it's a prequel, a side-quel, and a sequel all at the same time (just accept that people are fighting for various reasons), but it benefits from having the always enjoyable presence of Eva Green as the antagonist. There's not really anything new or inventive here, and the whole style of the movie seems particularly stale if you...

Breaking new ground is certainly something to be admired. Being able to push the boundaries further is a rare feat that is inspiring to witness. The issue becomes what happens when that new ground becomes tired and worn? The inability to answer that quandary is a big reason squeals to visual spectacles rarely succeed. Their once flashy and new trend oversaturates the market to the point of ad nauseam.
With that issue in mind it is no wonder 300: Rise of an Empire does not work nearly as well as its predecessor. Director Noam Murro’s style is reminiscent to the original to a fault. It is akin to waiting eight years to make a sequel to The Matrix.

Chicago – The rewriting of history in comic book movie form – not that’s anything wrong with that – continues with “300: Rise of an Empire.” Ancient wars are brought to life through a combination of mythology, six-pack abs, 3D blood spurts and comprehensive special effects, which can be better than history.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Nothing is unexpected in “300: Rise of an Empire” that wasn’t expressed in the previous “300” film. The sequel is a series of war proclamations and battle, only to regroup for more speeches and then more conflict. Most of it happens on the sea, which allows for some exaggerated computer generated ships and their minions – at one point a horse rides among the rolling vessels. But all the blood, bodies and baring breasts are intact, richly presented in action packed 3D. For fans of the previous film, there is everything expected in the sequel, with no subtlety or explanations necessary.

Wonder how many viewers would be interested in another version of the oft repeated history of ancient Greece? It's the story of how the Persian King Xerxes, with over 1,000 ships in his fleet, could have easily conquered the divided Greeks in Circa 480 BC.
Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel "Xerxes", the film takes off on a very verbose expository note by the Spartan Queen Gorgo. Her explanations weave in the loose ends as well as the backstory of the characters, giving an insight into the history.

The iconic line "this is Sparta" gets a sole outing in belated sequel 300: Rise of an Empire, but it's muted and uttered almost under the breath of Lena Headey's Queen Gorgo. What's strange is that this is a rare moment of restraint in a film that goes Ott, striving so hard to outdo its predecessor yet ultimately coming up short. More violence! More action! More nudity! None of this can compensate for the dearth of emotional engagement on show in Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder's script.
To some the first 300 is visceral graphic novel entertainment writ large on the big screen, to others it's a visually dazzling empty vessel (this reviewer leans to the latter). How you feel about Rise of an Empire will...
