Ellis Marsalis Jr., New Orleans jazz legend known as a pianist and teacher as well as the father of Wynton and Branford Marsalis, died Wednesday from complications of Covid-19. He was 85.
According to his son, Ellis Marsalis III, Marsalis died after developing pneumonia. “I was with him in the hospital for six or seven hours yesterday. Branford was with him Monday, I was with him yesterday and Jason was with him today. He passed right after Jason departed,” Ellis Marsalis III told the Associated Press.
Born in 1934 in New Orleans, Marsalis studied at Dillard University and later Loyola University New Orleans, and after graduation established himself as a highly sought after teacher, instructing people who would go on to become some of the biggest names in contemporary jazz. Among his famous students are Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., and Marlon Jordan.

To mark its 100th episode, CBS’ NCIS: New Orleans will expose Pride’s ears to a family secret, while filling viewers’ ears with the R&B stylings of a musical guest.
TVLine has learned exclusively that in Episode 100 of the NCIS offshoot, airing Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 10/9c, Stacy Keach will reprise his role as Special Agent Dwayne Pride’s father. Currently out on parole, Cassius will find himself connected to an NCIS case involving a notorious unsolved casino heist from many years ago. And during the investigation into said heist, Dwayne will meet a family member he never knew existed!

Actor Harry Connick Jr. took to the stage with his former teacher in a concert marking the 100th anniversary of Louis Armstrong's birth. In high school, Connick studied jazz piano under Ellis Marsalis, father of four professional musicians: saxophonist Branford Marsalis, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis and drummer Jason Marsalis. Ellis Marsalis also played with all four sons on Saturday. Saturday's concert marked Ellis Marsalis' retirement from the music faculty at the University Of New Orleans, though Connick played down the importance of his mentor's departure from academia.
