Between his strong new album – (pronounced Subtract) and the week he spent in court successfully proving the originality of “Thinking Out Loud,” Ed Sheeran and his songwriting methods are under the sharpest scrutiny of his career. Other than the man himself, few have more insight into that subject than Snow Patrol guitarist Johnny McDaid, who’s been collaborating with Sheeran since 2013 as a co-writer and producer, including on the recent hits “Bad Habits” and “Shivers.” In an interview conducted for Rolling Stone‘s Sheeran cover story, McDaid, who’s also close friends with Sheeran,...

Global superstar Lewis Capaldi unveiled yesterday the heartfelt music video for his new single, the piano-led “Pointless” – taken from his brand new record Broken By Desire To Be Heavenly Sent – out May 19th, 2023.
Relatability sits at the core of Capalid’s artistry, and the new music video is another perfect example of this. Directed by Hector Dockrill the beautifully cinematic video follows the relationship, and unconditional bond between a mother (played by Niamh Algar) and her son (played by George Jaques), navigating their way through meandering moments of adolescence and adulthood.
The return of Lewis Capaldi has been characteristically disruptive, in the most exciting way. Rocketing straight to the top of the UK singles chart in September with comeback single ‘Forget Me’, his third UK number 1 which quickly became Gold-certified and smashed 100 million streams globally, making him the fifth artist this year to have a single go straight in at Number 1 in its first week,...

The two artists who sued Ed Sheeran for copyright infringement over “Shape of You” have been ordered to pay the pop star over 1.1 million in legal fees, Billboard reports.
After Sheeran prevailed in the copyright suit, lawyers for the grime artist Sami Chokri and his co-writer Ross O’Donoghue tried to argue that their clients shouldn’t have to cover the legal expenses of Sheeran and his co-defendants — songwriters Steven McCutcheon and Johnny McDaid — due to their “conduct… both before and during the proceedings.” Judge Antony Zacaroli, however, rebuffed those...

The Kid Laroi earned his first Number One on the Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs chart with “Stay,” featuring a verse from Justin Bieber. The single, which was co-written by Charlie Puth and Blake Slatkin (24kgoldn’s “Mood”), among others, contrasts the Kid Laroi’s hoarse urgency with Bieber’s airy delivery; it picked up 30.8 million streams opening week. “Stay” builds on the success of the Kid Laroi’s breakout hit, “Without You,” another Slatkin co-write, which came out late last year.

Marshmello is facing a lawsuit from a fellow Edm producer, Russian DJ Arty, over alleged similarities between their respective songs. In a complaint filed Monday in California federal court, Arty (Artem Stoliarov) accuses the writers of “Happier,” Marshmello’s hit collaboration with Bastille, of “willfully copying” his remix of OneRepublic’s “I Lived.”
The complaint is unique given its focus on a remix. Arty specifically targets the songwriters — Marshmello (Christopher Comstock), Bastille frontman Daniel Campbell Smith and producer Steve Mac — for allegedly borrowing the “original composition elements” of the revamped track “note for note,...

On Thursday Kelly Clarkson released the video for her uplifting new anthem “Broken & Beautiful,” as a tie-in to the upcoming animated film UglyDolls.
In the clip, Clarkson appears backstage before a show, singing the song to herself in the dressing room mirror and to her daughter, River Rose. Meanwhile, Moxy, the UglyDolls character voiced by Clarkson herself, leads a troupe of animated friends through the theater and, at the end of the clip, sings alongside the live-action Clarkson once she takes the stage. British singer Anne-Marie’s new video for “2002” is a throwback to the era the song’s title evokes, and the clips features loving references to classic clips like Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time,” *Nsync’s “Bye Bye Bye,” Jay-z’s “99 Problems” and Nelly’s “Ride Wit Me”.
The clip features Anne-Marie and her love interest moving through scenes, settings and choreography evoking all of those videos. It was directed by Hannah Lux Davis, who also helmed Anne-Marie’s video for “Friends,” her tag-team hit with Marshmello, as well as Ariana Grande and The Weeknd’s “Love Me Harder.”
The song, which was co-written by Ed Sheeran with hitmakers Julia Michaels and Steve Mac, also features backing vocals from Sheeran and Mac and was recorded at London’s Rokstone Studios. It’s a highlight of her debut album “Speak Your Mind,” which came out last week on Warner Bros. Records.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are celebrating 21 years of marriage -- in a very interesting way.
The lovebirds, who tied the knot on Oct. 6, 1996, announced on Friday that they will be releasing their first-ever album together, The Rest of Our Life.
While fans will have to wait until Nov. 17 to hear the entire 11-song collection, McGraw and Hill have already released the music video for the album's title track on Amazon Music Unlimited. "The Rest of Our Life" is the second single from the album (following "Speak to a Girl") and was written by Ed Sheeran, Amy Wadge, Johnny McDaid and Steve Mac.
Although the video comes on the country couple's 21st anniversary, McGraw and Hill get into an argument on camera in the Grant Singer-directed project, which was shot in McGraw's home state of Louisiana.

The 23-year-old singer teamed up with Migos' Quavo for the song, which he co-wrote with Steve Mac and Ed Sheeran. Payne is the second One Direction member to pursue the hip-hop/R&B genre, after former bandmate Zayn Malik. Payne actually references his boy band past in the pre-chorus, singing, "You know, I used to be in 1D (now I'm out, free) / People want me for one thing (that's not me) / I'm not changing, the way that I (used to be) / I just wanna have fun (and get rowdy)." In this episode of Fright Bytes, your hosts Lianne Spiderbaby and her brother Steve Mac discuss film noir and it’s influence on the horror genre and modern movie making. Film Noir is perhaps Hollywood’s most organic artistic movements. Beginning in the early 1940s, countless screenplays inspired by hardboiled American crime fiction were turned into moving pictures, primarily by emerging European directors who shared a certain storytelling sensibility: highly stylized, overtly theatrical, with imagery often drawn from an earlier era of German Expressionist cinema.
