Dabney Coleman made anything he appeared in better. That was the consensus as news reached his show business colleagues of his death today at 92.
Words like “perfect,” “exceptional” and “the best” were all used to describe Coleman’s body of work, which carried many of the projects he appeared in. As Richard Roeper said of Coleman’s frequent villain roles, “He was the best at playing guys who were the worst.”
Some of the early reactions:

The new DC cinematic universe is entering a fresh new stage, and the latest news shows it's not afraid to do stuff that's a little weird or out of left field. According to a report by The InSneider, DC Studios is developing an untitled animated feature based on the comic series "Jurassic League," which was released in 2022 as a limited six-issue run. The movie will be about "a prehistoric version of Earth that see heroes and villains as dinosaurs." James Gunn, co-ceo of DC Studios and director of "The Suicide Squad," is set to produce, with Brian Lynch writing the script.
If Brian Lynch sounds like a familiar name, you might recognize it from the credits for "Puss in Boots," the "Secret Life of Pets" movies, and both "Minions" and "Minions: The Rise of Gru." All signs seem to confirm that this new dinosaur superhero film will be for children first and foremost,...

There’s a new rumor by The InSneider about DC Studios taking us on a wild ride with an upcoming animated feature that’s anything but ordinary. Picture this: a world where our favorite superheroes and villains have gone prehistoric. That’s right, we’re talking dinosaurs. The buzz suggests that ‘Jurassic League’ is in the works, and it’s shaping up to be an epic mashup of capes and scales.

James Gunn, the big boss at DC Studios, is said to be steering this ship, with Brian Lynch, known for his work on ‘Minions,’ crafting the story. Imagine the Justice League, but with a twist. Instead of capes, they’re sporting scales and roaring into action.

Keith Giffen, the longtime comics author and artist who co-created popular characters such as DC’s Lobo and the Jamie Reyes version of the Blue Beetle as well as Marvel’s Rocket Raccoon, has died. He was 70.
His family announced his death Wednesday on Facebook via a sardonic post pre-written by Giffen: “I told them I was sick…Anything not to go to New York Comic Con, Thanx,” adding “Bwah ha ha ha ha.”
The cause of death is being attributed to a stroke.
Giffen is best known for writing and drawing galaxy-spanning adventure book Legion of Super-Heroes in the 1980s and 1990s, at one point making the title one of DC’s top sellers. He was also the artist on early 1980s title Omega Men in which he and writer Roger Slifer introduced Lobo. At first a brutal villain, he was later turned into a parody of overly muscle-bound...

The last time Nia Vardalos saw her dad, Gus, in person was at Christmas when she was visiting her parents in Winnipeg, Canada.
Gus, the inspiration for Nia’s father in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” was 87 and in declining health. “It was like watching your favorite wind-up toy slowly slowly losing its batteries over the last year,” Nia tells Variety. “At Christmas we were all there. He was on the couch, happy and mobile. He wasn’t incapacitated but not quite running a marathon…I had a feeling this might be it.”
When it was time for Nia to leave, she recalls, “There was a moment that flashed between my dad and me when we said goodbye…I think he was saying, ‘This really is goodbye.”

Chicago – As a pet owner, I know firsthand that I want an exciting life for my guinea pigs. When I’m off at work, I’d like to think that they throw parties or have some sort of hangouts with other guinea pigs or pets in the area. The alternative being the sad realization that they are stuck in their cage while I’m away, probably bored out of their little minds. “The Secret Life of Pets” franchise continues to brings the fantasy to life, even if the sequel feels too tame.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Let’s get back to the important part: the totally healthy fantasy social life I’ve created for my guinea pigs. Whenever I’m gone I like to imagine they are having fun (mis)adventures that may or may not include acts of superheroism or even crimes. “The Secret Life of Pets 2” continues to scratch that itch,...

If family animation often struggles to earn respect in the film industry, and screenwriters often struggle to get respect in film’s creative hierarchy, then where does that leave a screenwriter who specializes in family animation? In the case of Brian Lynch, the answer is this: thriving, and contributing to films that have accumulated more than a billion dollars at the box office.
Over the past decade, Lynch has become a go-to screenwriter for a slew of Illumination’s biggest animated kidpics, from “Hop” to “Minions” (follow-up “Minions: The Rise of Gru” is on tap for 2020) to “The Secret Life of Pets,” with “The Secret Life of Pets 2″ having topped last weekend’s box office. But Lynch’s evolution into an all-around children’s scribe wasn’t something he could have predicted.
“Other than the Muppets, I really didn’t watch many kids’ movies as a child,” Lynch says.

It looks like Disney’s “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” won’t be rising from the ashes anytime soon.
According to Friday’s early estimates, the 12th and final installment in the Marvel-owned franchise is heading for a disappointing $37.7 million opening weekend, after a lackluster Friday showing. Originally, Disney estimated a start between $40 million and $50 million which would have already ranked the film as one of the franchise’s lowest openings.
Also opening this weekend is Universal-Illumination’s “Secret Life of Pets 2,” which should pull around $48.5 million following $17 million in Friday grosses. The numbers are close to early predictions for the film, which estimated a $50 million to $55 million opening. However, it will likely fall short of its predecessor, which opened to a surprise $104 million its opening weekend and holds the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for an original film.

Sad to say, the bloom is off the rose. The first The Secret Life of Pets in 2016 was an animated fluff-ball that hit on a fresh premise: What do our pets do when we close the door and leave them behind? The sequel covers pretty much the same territory. The big difference being that the critters leave New York City for a trip to the farm. Their instinct for mischief stays the same, yet you feel the pall of repetition. Not enough to completely spoil the party, but you get the idea.

Illumination missed the boat on The Secret Life of Pets because the way they’ve told these stories thus far make them a lot more conducive to television than cinema. If that first film’s sprawling character list devolving into wild schemes and pratfalls barely adhering to the flimsy plot beneath wasn’t enough to prove it, composing The Secret Life of Pets 2 into three very disparate subplots forced together at the climax is. Moving to a long-form narrative format would supply breathing room to focus on one or two animals at a time while the others exist tangentially in the background until their episode arrives. We could follow Max (Patton Oswalt replacing persona non grata Louis C.K.) and Duke (Eric Stonestreet) one week and Gidget (Jenny Slate) the next.

There’s an unfortunate imbalance to be found within The Secret Life of Pets 2. Last time, the ingenious concept of what our animal companions do when we’re not around was done to decent effect, creating an animal take on the Toy Story plot. Nothing on the level of Pixar, but still cute and fun. Here, the scales are tilted in the wrong direction. Far too much of this film, which admittedly is aimed at children, opts to be silly nonsense just meant to divert young eyes. The potential of the first movie is mostly abandoned. One aspect here is handled well, but the rest is disappointing and trying for an adult to sit through. Consider me very much let down. The film is a sequel, of course, to The Secret Life of Pets. Again, we follow along with the adventures of various animals while their owners are out and about.

Illumination’s tenth feature, The Secret Life Of Pets 2, is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 comedic blockbuster that had the biggest opening weekend ever for an original film, animated or otherwise.
The film opens in theaters on June 7.
Packed with Illumination’s signature irreverence and subversive humor, this new chapter explores the emotional lives of our pets, the deep bond between them and the families that love them, and answers the question that has long intrigued every pet owner: What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home?
Terrier Max (Patton Oswalt) is coping with some major life changes. His owner (Ellie Kemper) is now married and has a toddler, Liam. Milking human’s collective affection for our furry and feathered pals, the original “The Secret Life of Pets” imposed the “Toy Story” formula on animals living in New York City in order to show us what they do when we are not looking. That first feature in what is now a franchise, directed by Chris Renaud and written by Brian Lynch, was generally mediocre but succeeded at introducing an odd group of characters with peoplelike personalities, rendered mildly humorous in the context of the pet realm. In other words, it was fine.
“The Secret Life of Pets 2,” on the other hand, for which both Renaud and Lynch reprise their roles, effectively acts as an animated ode to heteronormativity, toxic masculinity and patriarchal worldviews, passed off as harmless plot points to entertain young audiences.
In truth, there’s a thin line between the qualities the film attributes to its protagonists solely because they are animals,...

Illumination’s “The Secret Life Of Pets” films do something the “Despicable Me” studio’s other offerings have yet to accomplish: They allow younger audiences to explore their feelings about new life experiences in a silly, lighthearted way through the travails of adorable animated animals. Despite being an overly loud and caustic clone of “Toy Story,” the first feature showed its target market that it’s perfectly okay to be frustrated about a new sibling joining the family. It gave kids and parents the fundamental tools to work through their difficulties, all with a healthy dose of slapstick.
Director Chris Renaud’s followup, “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” similarly spotlights the trepidation surrounding the arrival of a child. Only now, Renaud and returning screenwriter Brian Lynch deliver a lesson for the parents in the audience. Even though it poaches some themes and narrative structure from yet another Pixar classic...

There are, somehow, three entire plotlines that drive Chris Renaud’s fizzy, frequently silly “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” a worthy if slightly less delightful sequel to the director’s 2016 animated hit. First, there’s the life-lesson-heavy story that centers around ostensible franchise star Max as he deals with crippling anxiety after a major life change. Then, there’s the wacky tale of Max’s love interest (go with it), bubbly Pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate), tasked with caring for Max’s cherished toy while he embarks on a trip, only to lose it in a terrifying apartment filled with cats.
So far, so cute, but there’s the third story: Bonzo bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart), believing he is an actual superhero, joins forces with newbie Shih Tzu Daisy (Tiffany Haddish) to save an abused white tiger cub from a very, very evil circus. For a franchise that’s literally...

Universal Pictures is celebrating National Pet Day by dropping a new trailer for “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” highlighting the “emotional” side of our furry friends.
The footage shows the terrier Max, voiced by Patton Oswalt, being taken to the vet by his owner (Ellie Kemper) due to the stress of protecting her toddler son Liam.
Kevin Hart’s rabbit Snowball later tells Max, “The baby is leaving the nest,” as Liam heads off to preschool for the first time. Harrison Ford, making his animated-film debut as the Welsh Sheepdog Rooster, pushes Max to deal with his fears.
“The first step of not being afraid is acting like you’re not afraid,” Rooster declares.
The voice cast includes returnees Chloe the tabby cat (Lake Bell) and Gidget the Pomeranian (Jenny Slate), as well as newcomer Daisy the Shih Tzu (Tiffany Haddish). Oswalt replaces original star Louis C.K. as Max.

We’ve got a new trailer for The Secret Life of Pets 2 for you to watch today and this one introduces us to Harrison Ford’s character Rooster.
This is Ford’s first time voicing a character for a film. Why he chose to do it with this film, I’ll never understand. But, he’s in it and he plays a farm dog. As you’ll see, the character seems to fit his grumpy personality.
The movie also stars Patton Oswalt, who replaces original star Louis C.K. as the main character, Max. It also features the voices of Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Jenny Slate, Eric Stonestreet, Nick Kroll, and Pete Holmes.
I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that there is a big fanbase for a film like this. After all, people love their pets! If you enjoyed the first movie, you’ll most likely enjoy this sequel.

“With great power comes great adorability.”
Illumination Entertainment has released a third trailer for their upcoming animated film The Secret Life of Pets 2. This new trailer puts the focus on the bunny character Snowball, whose owner enjoys dressing up him up as a superhero, and this is something that he proudly embraces.
The movie stars Patton Oswalt, who replaces original star Louis C.K. as the main character. It also features the voices of Jenny Slate, Kevin Hart, Eric Stonestreet, Tiffany Haddish, Nick Kroll, Pete Holmes, and Harrison Ford lending his voice to a cartoon character for the very first time.
The first film has a pretty big fan base and while I wasn’t a big fan of the first film, there are a lot of people that did enjoy it, so this trailer is for you!

Someone is wearing is the cone of shame in the first trailer for The Secret Life of Pets 2.
There’s something very wrong with Max the dog. Tricked into going to the vet by his owner, he has to sit in the waiting room with all the other messed-up pets to find out what’s wrong. Maybe it’s the fact that he now sounds suspiciously like Patton Oswalt instead of disgraced comedian Louis Ck.
Averting a PR catastrophe, Illumination have brought Max back with a completely child-friendly new bark for The Secret Life Of Pets 2 – a sequel to their 2016 animated hit.
The first film saw Max the Jack Russell team up with Chloe the tabby cat (Lake Bell), Mel the pug (Bobby Moynihan), Buddy the dachshund (Hannibal Buress), Duke the mongrel (Eric Stonestreet), and Gidget the Pomeranian (Jenny Slate) to take down a gang of...

With Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s “The Grinch” opening in theaters November 9, the companies are ready to debut the first look at their upcoming sequel, “The Secret Life of Pets 2.” The original opened in July 2016 and became an animated summer blockbuster, earning an impressive $875.5 million at the worldwide box office. A sequel is a no-brainer with that kind of money, and thus “Secret Life of Pets 2” is coming June 2019.
While children might not be privy to the film’s behind-the-scenes changes, “Secret Life of Pets 2” is notable for doing away with Louis C.K. in the lead role. The comedian voiced the original film’s main character, a dog named Max, but he is not returning to the franchise. C.K. admitted to sexual misconduct last fall after being accused of harassment by five female comedians. After taking several months off, C.K. has only recently started returning to...

Things are about to get hairier. While the first “Secret Life of Pets” showed the hidden lives of household pets — in the vein of “Toy Story” — the first trailer for the sequel shows the insecurities and worries your pets think about when they’re dragged to the vet.
“My owner always says I’m such a good dog, and I feel like a good dog, but what if I’m a bad dog,” one particularly neurotic pet says in the trailer. “What if I’m a bad dog!?“
That’s hardly the biggest change to the upcomingfilm. “The Secret Life of Pets 2” has re-cast Patton Oswalt in the role of the lead dog Max, a part originally voiced by Louis C.K. The comedian was dropped from the film back in November 2017 after he admitted to sexual misconduct.
