If you read the headline and are asking yourselves, pilots? what pilots? — you are not wrong. It’s been largely a 2024 pilot season without pilots. A grand total of maybe one of them is expected to factor into any fall decisions as the broadcast networks prepare to unveil their schedules, starting with CBS tomorrow, May 2.
Needless to say, the broadcast pilot season is no longer the industry obsession it once was this time of year, with back-to-back disruptions from the pandemic and the dual Hollywood strikes providing the proverbial final nail in the coffin of the decades-old pilot cycle. But for tradition’s sake, here are some insights into the networks’ current development plans.
There is no more stacked lineup for next season than CBS’ with three new drama series, Young Gibbs prequel NCIS: Origins; Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; and Watson, headlined by Morris Chestnut; and two new comedies, Poppa’s House,...

Cougar Town Season 5, Episode 11 “Refugee”
Written by Michael Lisbe & Nate Reger
Directed by Michael McDonald
Airs Tuesday nights at 10pm Et on TBS
“Refugee” doesn’t appear to be hiding its importance in the show’s overarching narrative, with the seemingly unrelated events of Bobby’s boat disappearing and Chick appearing around the kitchen island at Jules’ house. But “Refugee” cleverly distracts the audience with flashy CSI: Miami homages and Grayson hamming for the camera, returning to Chick and the boat (which acts as the episode’s central metaphor) in the final moments to deliver an expected, but nonetheless powerful reminder of just how quickly things can change in life, and not always for the better.
Bobby’s boat disappearing is not just a prank (with ulterior motives, of course) by Chick: coupled with the hilarious adventures of Detectives Gumshoe and Blacktop, the central plot of “Refugee” acts as a...

Cougar Town Season 5, Episode 6 “Learning to Fly”
Written by Michael Lisbe & Nate Reger
Directed by John Putch
Airs Tuesday nights at 10pm Et on TBS
Underneath the many gimmicks, recurring gags, and generic sitcom tropes of “Learning to Fly”, there are some interesting stories to be told: both Jules’ fear of things going too well in her life and the entirety of the Bobby/Travis plot are terrific avenues for character exploration. However, only the latter of these two really culminates in anything interesting – and being that it’s delegated to B/C plot territory for most of the episode, there’s only so much it can do to enhance what’s around it.
There’s certainly interesting ideas to parse out of the episode’s material (that is, save for the petty, predictable Ellie/Andy stuff), most of it symbolic: the death of Big Tippi isn’t really effective...

Only in the last few years has actor Justin Theroux turned to writing, but after the enormous success of his work with Etan Cohen on Ben Stiller's action comedy Tropic Thunder, he snagged a dream job writing Iron Man 2 for Jon Favreau and Marvel Entertainment. Though it was recently announced that Theroux would be producing an Air Guitar feature for Paramount, THR reports that's not stopping him from writing his next project, titled Space Invader, a romantic comedy about a man who decides to journey into space after he suspects that his longtime girlfriend, an astronaut, is cheating on him with another spacewalker. Will Arnett (last seen in Disney's G-Force) is attached to star, though it's uncertain which male role he's taking on (I'd assume he's playing the "other" cheating guy). Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger sold the project to Fox and penned the original draft of the comedy.

Theroux made his writing debut on the hilarious "Tropic Thunder" and wrote the screenplay for "Iron Man 2" which Paramount is sending out on May 7th next year.

Justin Theroux has been hired to pen a draft of the astronaut romantic comedy Space Invader. Theroux is an actor turned screenwriter whose writing credits include Tropic Thunder and the upcoming Iron Man 2. Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger sold the project to 20th Century Fox and penned the original draft. The concept is actually kind of funny, and has nothing to do with the famous retro video game (alien pictured above). Details after the jump. Here is some information on the plot from a scriptshadow review of that early draft: Doug, the space shuttle janitor, watches helplessly as his astronaut girlfriend heads off on a 3 month International Space Station mission with Stamp Majors, all-American astronaut superstar and philanthropist (think a cross between a real life version of Buzz Lightyear, and the character Owen Wilson plays in Meet The Parents). He begins to think that the two are getting it...

Justin Theroux is heading to space. The actor-cum-writer is on board to pen a draft of "Space Invader," an astronaut romantic comedy set up at Fox.
Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger sold the project and penned the original draft of the comedy, which centers on a man who decides to go to space after he suspects that his longtime girlfriend, an astronaut, is cheating on him with another spacewalker. Will Arnett is attached to star.
Davis Entertainment, the production company behind comedies like "The Heartbreak Kid," is on board to produce with Principato/Young. The project originally was set up at Fox Atomic before migrating to big Fox after the shuttering of that division.
The UTA- and 3 Arts-repped Theroux, who could potentially direct the title as well, has been honing his writing chops. He penned the comedy hit "Tropic Thunder" at Paramount and wrote the upcoming Marvel/Par pic "Iron Man 2.

As I mentioned in a post a couple of days ago [1], there have been a ton of documentaries related to heavy metal lately, and one that sort of fits into that category as well is Alexandra Lipsitz's Air Guitar Nation. Documenting the Us and World Air Guitar Championships from a few years back, the movie is more about performance art than music specifically, but either way it's a lot of fun. Now it looks like the documentary is about to be brought to a wider audience as part of a fictional comedy as well. According to THR's Risky Business Blog [2], Tropic Thunder writer Justin Theroux has signed on to produce a movie for Paramount called simply Air Guitar, set in the world of competitive air guitar. He will not actually be the one writing the script however; those duties will fall to Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger (Just Shoot Me!

If you've ever held witness to an "air guitar" competition, then you will undoubtedly share in my excitement for this next story. In early 2007, I had the honor of catching Alexandra Lipsitz's ferociously entertaining documentary Air Guitar Nation (read my review) during its extremely limited theatrical run. Later that year, fellow Fat Guy at the Movies Kevin Carr and I attended a regional air guitar competition in Columbus, Ohio and met Dan Crane (aka rocker Bjorn Turoque, pictured above with David "C-Diddy" Jung), one of the stars of the doc. It was an energetic, rockin' affair that has stuck with me ever since. So much so that earlier this year, I decided that the most rockin' double feature of all-time would be a double-bill of Air Guitar Nation and this year's sensation Anvil! The Story of Anvil. Trust me, that two-some of rock odysseys would blow your mind. I tell you that story to tell you...

Tropic Thunder producer Justin Theroux has joined up with Paramount to produce the comedy flick Air Guitar.
Inspired by recent looks at air guitar, including the documentary Air Guitar Nation and the book To Air is Human, the movie will be a humorous take on world of competitive air guitar (yes, there is such a thing).
Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger will be writing the script for Paramount, and while no specific plot has been revealed yet, the movie will likely follow the classic theme of underdog-rising-to-fame.
Air Guitar still has a ways to go before it can hit production, but hopefully as more is revealed about the film it continues to sound as entertaining as it does just as a concept.

Now this sounds like a very fun project. Earlier in the week it was announced (via the Risky Biz Blog) that actor/writer Justin Theroux (who last produced Tropic Thunder) would be signing on to produce Air Guitar, a story set in the competitive world of air guitar. The comedy was originally based on and inspired by the popular documentary Air Guitar Nation and the book To Air Is Human written by Dan Crane, who plays under the name Bjorn Turoque. Paramount has now brought on up-and-coming writers Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger ("Just Shoot Me!", "Teachers") to pen the script with Theroux producing and developing. Theroux is not considering directing or acting in Air Guitar at this time, which means this still needs a director. It was originally a DreamWorks project, but it ended up at Paramount once the studios split. In regards to the story, I'm pretty sure...

Deny it all you want in public, but there is not a man nor woman amongst us who can say they have never picked up that holy instrument that is the air guitar. Whether you do it for a second and then put it away in shame or you spaz out like an epileptic every time you here a great solo, air guitar is like the force: it binds the universe together. Unfortunately, the act still has a social stigma, but now crusader Justin Theroux, writer of Tropic Thunder, is going to make us face our demons. According to Reuters, Theroux has signed on to produce a film not based on bedroom antics, but rather the competitive world of air guitar, which is apparently a real thing. The script will be written by Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger (who have two episodes of Just Shoot Me and one episode of...

I feel like Justin Theroux is becoming some kind of muse to the masses, gently introducing them to the offbeat and cool before moving onto something else. The majority of American moviegoers probably don't know his name, but they feel his influence. Someday, every man in America will start wearing fedoras again, and not really know why. The reason will be Theroux. But first, he plans to hook everyone on Air Guitar, and introduce the masses to the offbeat world that cherishes the talent.
Variety reports that Theroux has signed on to produce Paramount's Air Guitar, a story centered around the self-consciously ironic world of air guitar championships. The project has been in the works at Paramount since 2006 or so, and is cobbled together from the 2006 documentary Air Guitar Nation and Dan Crane's book To Air Is Human. Screenwriting duties originally belonged to Ian Roberts and Jay Martel, but...

I got a fever, and the only prescription is...more air guitar. It's really not, but it's happening anyway. Justin Theroux (writer, director, all around bad-ass) is producing a movie titled Air Guitar. The film will be set in the world of air guitar competitions and feature the colorful characters that participate in them. This is definitely not a documentary, as there was already one in 2006 called Air Guitar Nation. Guitar is being penned by Nate Reger and Mike Lisbe. Both writers have...

Andrew Currie has the right stuff to direct Space Invader, a Fox Atomic comedy that will star Will Arnett. Arnett also will produce the film along with Peter Principato and Paul Young.
Space centers on Doug Huggins, the son of a NASA legend, who is terrified of flying. When Huggins learns that his girlfriend, a rising aeronautic star, has been chosen to fly to the International Space Station with Stamp, a spaceman who is God's gift to space travel, he must overcome his fears and travel to space to win her back. Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger wrote the script.
Robbie Brenner and John Davis are exec producing.
Canadian helmer Currie is best known for writing and directing the zombie comedy Fido, which received strong notices at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, where Currie found himself being courted by several agencies before finally shacking up with ICM. The movie also screened in January at the Sundance Film Festival and is now in limited release.

New Line Cinema has adopted Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger's comedy pitch Little Orphan Anthony, with Anthony Anderson on board to star and produce. The project piqued interest from MGM, Warner Bros. Pictures and Paramount Pictures. It centers on a young yuppie couple whose lives are turned upside down when they mistakenly adopt the world's oldest orphan -- a 25-year-old man (Anderson). Anderson will produce along with his partner Adam Glass through their A Squared production outfit. Their managers -- Peter Principato and Paul Young of Principato-Young Entertainment -- also will get producing credit along with E. Brian Dobbins, who will serve as executive producer.
