Danny Lee, a special-effects maestro who orchestrated the memorable bullet-ridden finale for Bonnie and Clyde and received an Oscar for his work on the Disney fantasy Bedknobs and Broomsticks, has died. He was 95. Lee, who contributed to more than 50 Disney films during his career, died Nov. 28 at an assisted living facility in Prescott, Ariz., his family announced. In an era before computer-generated effects, the Wisconsin native blew up houses and cars, created rain, flew people and beds in the air and helped create what was, at the time, one of the most shocking endings

Two-thousand-double-one came in with the roar of Tiger Mommy and the tragic devastation of Japan’s tsunami. As it continued, the NBA waved farewell to Yao Ming, Gary Locke took a plane to Beijing — and Asians in the library made their cell phones ring. As 2012 begins, here are Tao Jones’s picks for the best, the worst and the most memorable events, individuals and phenomena of the year that was.

Lynn Mikeska, Bo Keister, Elizabeth Connelly, Cindy Hogan, Johnny and Susan McPhail, Jennifer Pierce Mathus, Rob Myers, Blake Buck, Daniel Lee, Carlisle Forrester Jacob (Alex Walters) has been gone for a decade, but he has finally decided to return to his hometown. Some things have changed -- for one, he can no longer smoke in Patrick’s (Lance E. Nichols) restaurant because City Hall has taken to telling businesses what to do. (Ah, once again, smoking is used to represent individual freedom.) One thing has not changed, people have not forgotten what they believe Jacob did ten years ago; as Jacob explains, this is a place where “rumors are truths, accusations are facts.” Heck, even his own mother (Cindy Hogan) believes that he is guilty. Whatever horrible and unforgettable thing Jacob did ten years ago,...

Longer than the Han Dynasty itself, Daniel Lee's 14 Blades is one of those big fat martial arts epics you either eat up with a fork and spoon or pass and say "no thank you."
The fight sequences are pretty fantastic, as can be expected from anything with Donnie Yen or Sammo Hung's names in the credits. Story-wise? Good luck. I couldn't follow half of it, and I swear I'm not a moron.
There's a section in the middle, where it is just about a man and his spunky female hostage out in the wild, and not about court in-fighting or secret honor guards dealing with betrayal, when it becomes an actual movie. The rest, however, is garbage, but gorgeous with big, bold action wonderfully shot and dazzlingly choreographed.
I give this movie a B. Below are my thoughts directly after seeing the film...

With the Fantastic Fest 2010 just two weeks away, the “largest genre festival in the U.S.” has announced a third wave of films.
Included in the line-up are Summit Entertainment’s action-comedy Red, Darren Bousman’s Mother’s Day, and the stylized action flick Bunraku with Josh Hartnett and Woody Harrelson.
But I’m especially excited about the addition of Agnosia, a “romantic thriller” produced by Guillermo del Toro. ”I’ve read few screenplays in my life that have impressed me as much as Agnosia,” del Toro said. Spanish filmmaker Eugenio Mira directed.
Fantastic Fest is also hosting a special “Master Pancake Theater” (similar to Mystery Science Theater) to mock Independence Day with guest Bill Pullman, plus a Spaceballs quote-along. Finally, they have planned the world premiere of the SyFy movie Sharktopus, followed by the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Roger Corman and his wife, Julie. Again, I...

In a few weeks, Austin, Texas will be host to one of the most incredible genre film festivals in the world. While we sadly won’t be able to attend this year’s Fantastic Fest, we are having a blast covering it from afar. The fine programmers are slowly teasing out the incredible line-up of films, and special guests.
Just yesterday it was announced that Roger Corman and his lovely wife Julie will be receiving a lifetime achievement award from the festival, and I couldn’t be happier for all involved. I know this year has been tremendous for Roger, with all of the DVDs and Blu-rays that Shout! Factory have been releasing, the Comic Con panel that Shout helped organize, and now this award from Fantastic Fest, the Corman’s must be riding an incredible wave of joy. We’ve written about several of the Corman Collection releases over the past few months,...

Another round of programming announcements from Fantastic Fest includes the news that Robert Schwentke's graphic novel adaptation "Red," starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren as former CIA agents forced back into action, will be screening as a sneak preview at the festival, as will "Mother's Day," starring Rebecca De Mornay, the new film from "Repo! The Genetic Opera"'s Darren Bousman. More exciting to me personally is the announcement that Bill Pullman will be appearing in person to help mock "Independence Day" in a special Master Pancake Theater screening of the Roland Emmerich alien disaster epic.

Stars: Donnie Yen, Wei Zhao, Damian Lau Ma Wu, Sammo Hung, Kate Tsui | Written and Directed by Daniel Lee
At the dawn of the Ming Dynasty, in order to consolidate all power and keep his bloodline on the throne, the Emperor established a secure system of defence for himself by taking young orphans off the street and training them to the highest martial arts standards to become his secret guards. Called Jinyiwei, the Brocade Guards, these warriors operated under their own code of law, led by the most skilled of their number, Qinglong (Yen).Bestowed upon him as leader is a box containing 14 steel blades, eight of which are to be used for interrogation and the remaining six for execution.
When the Imperial Court is usurped by the evil eunuch Jia, Qinglong is assigned to steal a list identifying those still loyal to the Emperor. But unknown to him,...

Director: Daniel Lee. Review: Adam Wing. There are two film stars who can guarantee my complete attention when it comes to Hong Kong cinema. The first one is Donnie Yen. Goes without saying really, Donnie seems to be keeping the Hong Kong film industry alive on his own at the moment. The second one is Vicki Zhao, not because she’s particularly kick-ass you understand, mainly because she’s cute as a kitten and I adore her. Which brings us to Daniel Lee’s (Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon) action extravaganza 14 Blades, how can the film possibly fail I hear you cry? Well, lets cut to the chase shall we, it can’t. Not in my eyes anyway. Accomplished filmmaking - up to a point perhaps. Substance, depth and emotion – you’ve got to be kidding me. Donnie Yen kicking ass across your TV screen – that’s more like it.

Not much in the way of new footage, but at least Kate Tsui has managed to escape from being labeled as the "villain with the menacing cleavage," with some action of her own - and since we're there, Tsui plays Tuo, a mortal enemy of the Jinyiwei (the brocade-clad army of the title), the Ming's own rendition of a secret service. According to the official website, she "lure[s] her target into an hallucinogenic state with her movements," which sounds about right.
Daniel Lee's 錦衣衛 (14 Blades) looks to feature the same lavish sets and top notch production values of recent Mainland historical epics, but with a more old school approach to action, as the emphasis on wirefu shows. But while there should be no worries in the action department, and Donnie Yen, Zhao Wei and a few other supporting characters should deliver the goods in terms of acting, the big...

Whatsammata, that teaser trailer for “14 Blades” we posted yesterday not enough for ya? You say you want more Donnie Yen killing people with all manner of blades and Sammo Hung being Sammo Hung? Well dang, ain’t you the lucky one, cause a 3-minute trailer for Daniel Lee’s “14 Blades” just popped up online. Unfortunately it’s still in Chinese, so you probably won’t get any of the plot. Mind you, not that that should stop you from wallowing in the film’s potential badassery. Thanks to reader Rick for the heads up. Starring Donnie Yen, Wei Zhao, Chun Wu, Yuwu Qi, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Kuan Tai Chen, Chen Zhi Hui, Ma Wu, Damian Lau, Kate Tsui, Kar-Ying Law, Xiang Dong Xu, and directed by Daniel Lee.

A teaser trailer for Donnie Yen’s latest Chinese costume martial arts epic “14 Blades” has landed online, and oh boy does it look good. I mean really, really good. It looks like the movie that “An Empress and the Warriors” should have been. The focus of the film seems to be directed at the right spot — the action — and not some insipid romance or, worst yet, some perfunctory love triangle. The Daniel Lee-directed film stars Yen and Vicki Zhao, along with Sammo Hung and Damian Lau. Set during the Ming Dynasty the movie will depict the exploits of a group of elite assassins known as the Imperial Guards. Trained since early childhood to become masters of the sword in service of the emperor, these men carried out their tasks with deadly precision. Starring Donnie Yen, Wei Zhao, Chun Wu, Yuwu Qi, Sammo Hung, Kuan Tai Chen, Chen Zhi Hui,...

The video quality for this new teaser trailer for Daniel Lee’s 14 Blades is just as bad as with the first promotion clip shown in Cannes back in May, but at least we finally see some real Donnie Yen action instead of just concept artwork.
