"It's not about the algorithms, it's about friendship." Gravitas has revealed the trailer for a mockumentary comedy called Bootyology. When a documentary crew looks to explore the relationship between artificial intelligence and pop music, their journey takes an unexpected turn when they stumble across a mystery involving the disappearance of an infamous rap duo. The film is a lyrical satire following the re-discovery of The Booty Boys, who disappeared in the early 2000s. It's another riff on music docs, kind of like the genius Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. From the musical minds behind District 78, Bootyology is inspired by real-life rap act "The Booty Boys" formed by Chris “brownEye” Lightbody & Spencer “sixxxHole” Yaras. The duo is bringing their colorful characters back to center stage in this searing but heartfelt satire of the music industry and the true costs of chasing stardom. Featuring music by The Booty Boys and an...

Some of Hollywood’s top comedians are remembering the life and career of Bob Einstein, the comic actor known for his characters Super Dave Osborne and Marty Funkhouser on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” who died Wednesday at 76.
“Never have I seen an actor enjoy a role the way Bob did playing ‘Marty Funkhouser’ on ‘Curb.’ It was an amazing, unforgettable experience knowing and working with him,” Larry David said in a statement. “There was no one like him, as he told us again and again. We’re all in a state of shock.”
Einstein’s brother, writer-director-actor Albert Brooks, called him “a great brother, father and husband,” but also a “brilliantly funny man.” In addition to his work on TV, several comedians also held up Einstein’s scene in the Brooks-directed comedy “Modern Romance” as a clerk at a running store calmly pressuring Brooks into spending a fortune on running gear...

Andy Kindler seems like the kind of comedian that you might recognize if you’ve ever watched some of his routines, but otherwise he might fade into the background a bit. Comedy being what it is to so many different people, it’s easy to think that he might be worht watching but is still subject to the differing views of his audience and might have to put up with what they want even when it’s not him. Comedians tend to rise and fall with their audience, as people will embrace one comic on one day and then switch over to another

Listen, breakfast is great. It’s so good people have invented an extension of breakfast so they can justify eating it later in the day. (“Brunch,” I’m looking right at you.) Obviously, people are fans.
And while we can commiserate with the desire to have the best breakfast as close by as possible, the good people of “Portlandia” — Peter (Fred Armisen) and Nance (Carrie Brownstein) — take “breakfast near me” to a whole new level in the sketch below. Rather than lay around dreaming of a great meal, this married couple crafts the perfect breakfast experience long before the morning sun rises.

‘Portlandia’: Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein Create the Next True Crime Podcast Sensation… Maybe
True crime podcasts are all the rage, but no one gets to see how the secrets are uncovered, cases are chosen, or mistakes are exposed. What matters is the story itself — how it sounds, not how it’s found.
Well, let’s hope it’s not like this.
In an exclusive look at Season 8, “Portlandia” stars and creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein pop into a Portland police station to record a podcast. While they’re welcomed in for an official visit, the two don’t exactly return the professionalism in kind. Their methods are peculiar, motivations less than pure, and end result not what anyone had in mind.
Turns out making a podcast may not be pretty, but it makes for a pretty good sketch. The video below is not only a new look at the final season, but the fourth in a series of videos premiering before the Season 8 debut.

‘Portlandia’ Season 8: Fred Armisen Lives Out Your Worst Sushi Nightmare in Exclusive Sketch — Watch
When you see one chili on a sushi menu, you’re safe. Three is clearly very hot stuff, but two? Two could mean anything. Two could be just right — as its middle placement implies — or it could veer wildly into all-too-mild or far-too-spicy territory.
Fred Armisen learns this lesson the hard way in an exclusive sketch from the upcoming season of “Portlandia.” During a casual dinner with his wife (played by Carrie Brownstein), the couple is sent into a panic when learning just how spicy their sushi is labeled on the menu.
You gotta ask, Fred. You gotta ask.

Kath and Dave are two of Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen’s most intense creations. Whether they’re trying to save the human race (after a local power outage) or going out for tapas (and dancing on the table), this couple doesn’t do anything half-assed.

Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein are back for one final season of “Portlandia,” and they’re taking on the big issues before bowing out.
In the video below, Brownstein plays the first female partner at a male-dominated law firm. But before she can be properly welcomed to the family, the men of the room have a few quick questions for her. With sexism, sexual harassment, and sexual assault dominating headlines in multiple industries, it’s encouraging to see the sharply satiric creators of “Portlandia” addressing the issue head-on.

The world lost a comedy great today, and it’s clear from Twitter what a great impact he had on so many fellow comedians. Kevin Pollak's documentary "Misery Loves Comedy" has a cute pun of a title that also draws attention to the film's primary flaw. Had Pollak just called his first directing foray "My Friends Talk About Comedy" or "White Comedians Love Misery," I probably could have just felt that this was one person polling a bunch of chums on a subject of mutual interest and accepted its limitations. But "Misery Loves Comedy" spends its entire runtime on a series of talking-head interviews with various comedians and on grand pronouncement after another, different variably famous stand-ups keep saying what "comedians" are like and what "comedy" is about. And given the composition of Pollak's panel of experts, I'm afraid that's ludicrous. With dozens of comics participating, the total number of African-American comics featured in the entire documentary? One. Whoopi Goldberg is brought in to summarize one Richard Pryor routine. She does that and nothing more.

Louis Ck dropped new $5 stand-up special “Live at the Comedy Store” — his sixth (video below) — on Tuesday, and celebrated with a very lengthy, occasionally rambling email blast to fans.
Plugging his independent project, the comedian’s note discussed his history with the industry, lamented having to cancel the last of four Madison Square Garden concerts for underwhelming Winter Storm Juno and even pushed his followers to see “Boyhood” and “Into the Woods.”

What does it take to be part of the "Saturday Night Live" band? It turns out musical skill isn't high on the list of priorities. At least, that's the case in the eye of a new comedy short starring Aimee Mann, Andy Kindler and D.C. Pierson.
When Pierson's character shows up to audition as a bass player for the show, all the casting directors want is someone who can believably laugh at the guest host's monologue jokes. After all, they don't have renowned comedians on the show every single week. Sometimes there are athletes or other notable pop culture names whose jokes don't exactly hit.
The short, released online by Flavorwire, is written and directed by Daniel Ralston. Though it's a totally fake version of the actual auditions, chances are you'll notice the over-laughing most of the band does on the show next time you tune in.

The network announced today the renewal of the critically acclaimed comedy series Maron for a second season with 13 all new half-hour episodes, up from 10, scheduled to premiere in 2014. “In many ways, Marc is a perfect representation of IFC and our approach to comedy,” said Jennifer Caserta, president and general manager of IFC. “He also seems to be in need of a less dysfunctional family, so we’re happy he’s returning to ours for an expanded second season.” Maron is an honest, comical look at the complicated man behind the “Wtf” podcast, writer/comedian Marc Maron. Maron tackles that sitcom staple this week, the love-triangle. Here's Glen's review of its latest episode...
This review contains spoilers.
1.8 Jen Moves To L.A.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Kyle show. Our protagonist is played by Josh Brenner, a young and enthusiastic comedy fan looking to break into the business as a writer/actor/director - “like Apatow before he stated sucking” - and is working as an assistant to stand up comedian Marc Maron in a position that offers little in the way of pay, health benefits, and friendship, but does enable him to embarrass himself in front of those he admires, such as Aubrey Plaza.
Excuse the flippancy but after spending so many episodes focussing on Marc's personal life it feels appropriate to highlight the importance of the Kyle character given that this is the episode where he really comes into his own.

It feels like Marc Maron's IFC show, Maron, has been in development or shooting for forever. Well, it finally has a hard premiere date: May 3. The show is about a comedian named Marc Maron who has a podcast in which he interviews people in his garage. (Sound familiar?) Judd Hirsch will play his dad (which is pretty perfect), Nora Zehetner (Mad Men) will play his girlfriend, comedian Andy Kindler will play his good friend, and Josh Brener his assistant. Since much of the show will be made up of fake, "Wtf"-like interviews, there will be plenty of guest stars, including Mark Duplass, Jeff Garlin, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, and Ken Jeong. Review: 'The Bitter Buddha' Captures The Brilliant Meta-Comedy & Existential Angst Of Eddie Pepitone
Eddie Pepitone is a comedian of dualisms. At 52, he's the next big thing. He's a meditating vegan with rage issues. He enjoys swearing at La drivers as much as he likes to feed squirrels in the park. This duality of character is what Steven Feinartz's documentary "The Bitter Buddha" (the title an oxymoron itself) attempts to convey about Pepitone, a man who is as delightful as he is loud, as incongruous as he is familiar, as buddha-like in nature and stature as he isn't. Pepitone is a stand up comedian in La, a comic's comic, as the slew of comedians interviewed attest to in our introduction to the man (testimony is given by Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis, Jen Kirkman, B.J. Novak, Paul Provenza, Dana Gould, Scott Aukerman, Andy Kindler, Sarah Silverman, and more). And yet, he's still under the radar, still trying for that big break. His signature scream...

That’s the principal focus of “The Bitter Buddha,” a documentary portrait of middle-aged stand-up Eddie Pepitone that surfs along the edge of his angry but self-aware shtick and celebrates his standing among fellow comedians, but all without fully and insightfully digging into the deep-seated emotion that informs his existential angst.
