John Mulaney’s wildly chaotic six-episode run of Everybody’s In LA featured old punks, phone-ins and just about every top comedian in the states.
But the show, which ran for six episodes around the Netflix Is A Joke Festival between May 3 and May 10, was originally designed as a variety show. “I wanted everyone to go make what they wanted and I will put it on. We can’t get renewed. We should actually be a variety show,” he said.
Mulaney was asked why he wanted to make a show that was largely difficult? He said that Netflix approached him as they wanted to do something live across the comedy festival but weren’t entirely sure what. “One idea they had was stand-up at the Geffen Theater. Only with only David doing stand-up, just Laura Nyro stories. He had a tight hour,” Mulaney joked. “I liked that it was an...

We can’t get enough of John Mulaney these days.
After winning his third Emmy last year for writing his Netflix stand-up special “Baby J,” where he spoke candidly (and hilariously) about his stint in rehab for addiction, the former “Saturday Night Live” writer has risen from the ashes like a comically witty Phoenix.
In the Emmy race once again this year in multiple categories, most notably for guest comedy actor for his performance in the brilliant episode “Fishes” from FX’s second season of “The Bear” and outstanding talk series for the Netflix live smash “Everybody’s in L.A.”
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Mulaney discusses his experience and perspectives on Los Angeles’ identity, his creative processes, and whether he’ll host the Oscars. Listen below!

On June 6, the 2024 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate 13 creators and stars responsible for some of the most stellar work of the TV season. Curated and selected by IndieWire’s editorial team, the event is a new edition of previous IndieWire Honors ceremonies, this time focused entirely on television. We’re showcasing their work with new interviews leading up to the Los Angeles celebration.
John Mulaney is talking about Marcia Clark.
To fans of the comedian, this shouldn’t come as a surprise — the former O.J. Simpson prosecutor has been a guest on his “Oh, Hello” Broadway show, the trial popped up in his stand-up, and Clark recently appeared on Netflix’s hilarious talk series “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA.”
“The O.J. Simpson trial was just an all-consuming experience for me as a kid, and I could talk about it for hours and hours,” Mulaney told IndieWire during a recent interview.

The team behind “Girls5eva” has gotten used to being texted song demos out of the blue. Series creator Meredith Scardino regularly sends music supervisor (and fellow executive producer) Jeff Rich- mond and his team voice memos singing her lyrics to the show’s latest absurd songs, such as “Home Alone Doorknob” or “Sweet’N Low Daddy.”
By season’s end, Sara Bareilles also gets in on the fun. It is a tradition that the Grammy winner, who stars as Dawn, writes a song to emotionally punctuate each finale. In Season 1, as Dawn began to harness her own songwriting dreams, Bareilles penned an ode to imperfection with “Four Stars,” and for Season 2, she was behind the empowering anthem “Bend Not Break.”
Deploying Bareilles’ soulful style is always strategic for the series, which moved to Netflix for Season 3 after two seasons on Peacock.

Everyone’s in the Emmy race, but Netflix and the Television Academy feel John Mulaney is better suited for a different category than intended — and that may only benefit his awards run.
Netflix’s live smash “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A,.” featuring the Emmy-winning stand-up comedian celebrating the quirks and unique personality of his beloved city, was massively popular on the platform. The streaming giant had planned to submit the show into the scripted variety category, where it would compete against the long-running “Saturday Night Live” and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” However, Variety has learned exclusively that Netflix and the creative team felt the show was better suited for the talk series category and, as a result, will now compete against late-night hosts such as Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, and Jimmy Fallon.

Only Murders In The Building Heads to Hollywood in New Season 4 Teaser - Main Image
Disney has dropped the first teaser trailer of the Emmy-winning mystery comedy series Only Murders in the Building:
The trailer confirms what we already know: Season 4 will see our amateur true crime podcasters Oliver Putnam (Martin Short), Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) hit the streets of Los Angeles, as they find a studio interested in bringing Only Murders to the big screen.
In the cliffhanger finale of Season 3, our amateur sleuths join an after-party to celebrate the triumphant opening night of Oliver’s murder mystery musical Death Razzle Dazzle. Not long after they close the case of Ben Glenroy’s elevator accident, they will be confronted soon by the “hot, fresh, dead body” of Charles’s friend and long-time stunt double Sazz Pataki (played by Jane Lynch).

Oh, this is such delicious casting! But what else would we expect from the chilling Evil? Richard Kind and John Carroll Lynch will guest star, and Danny Burstein will return, throughout the show’s four bonus episodes—and Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson) is on trial, TV Insider has learned exclusively. These were the episodes Paramount+ ordered to wrap up the series once it was determined the upcoming fourth season would be its last. Kind will guest star as Judge Joseph Jeter. He is a seemingly by-the-books, straight-arrow judge who is overseeing Leland Townsend’s trial and values efficiency at all costs. Lynch plays Henry Stick, the attorney assigned to Leland Townsend. He appears to be a bumbling, barely competent lawyer, but fortunately for Leland, Henry Stick proves to have greater power than is initially evident. Burstein is reprising his role as Da Lewis Cormier. He previously appeared in four episodes...

John Mulaney‘s new Netflix series John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA premiered on Monday night (May 6), and all anyone can seem to talk about is his new hairstyle. The show, which is part live talk show, part sketch show, and part stand-up comedy, features a wide range of guests. For example, Monday’s episode saw appearances from Jerry Seinfeld, Will Ferrell, St. Vincent, Richard Kind, Stavros Halkias, Natasha Leggero, Chelsea Peretti, and more. But the biggest star was Mulaney’s new cut, which was long in the back and featured 1990s-style curtains at the front. Fans took to social media to share their thoughts on the comedian’s new do, and opinions were mixed, to say the least. “I like the Clark Kent thing John Mulaney’s got going on with his hair,” one fan wrote on X. “John Mulaney’s hair in Everybody’s in LA is beautiful,...

When first we heard that Jon Stewart was switching up his Daily Show schedule this week, we assumed it had something to do with the Netflix Is a Joke festival, where he had a show Friday night.
What we didn’t know at the time was that instead of sitting behind the desk of his own show this Monday night, he’d be visiting two other late-night shows instead.
In order of appearance, the first stop on Stewart’s Monday night comedy tour was episode #2 of Everybody’s in L.A., John Mulaney’s six-episode experiment of a live late-night show for Netflix. The delightfully frenetic show—which includes viewer calls, random tangents from announcer/actor Richard Kind, and plenty of unintended snafus—had Stewart simultaneously confused, amazed, and seemingly terrified.

Tom Brady took the jokes in stride at his roast — well, most of them.
Amid jabs about Gisele Bündchen, deflategate and his good looks Sunday night, Brady bristled at one in particular, aimed at the Patriots’ 82-year-old owner, Robert Kraft.
During his turn onstage, Jeff Ross quipped: “So Tom became a Patriot and moved up to New England, and on the first day of training camp, that scrawny rookie famously walked into the owner Robert Kraft‘s office and said, ‘I’m the best decision your organization has ever made. Would you like a massage?’”
Brady then approached Ross, who’d blown a kiss Kraft’s way, and said in his ear: “Don’t say that shit again.” Ross replied, “Ok, Ok. He’s having fun, look at him. I love what you do for the Jews, Robert Kraft. You’re incredible.”

There’s a moment in the first episode of Everybody’s in L.A., John Mulaney’s delightfully chaotic live Netflix special, in which Mulaney asks special guest Jerry Seinfeld why he decided to make his Pop-Tarts origin movie Unfrosted (which was released on — you guessed it — Netflix the same day Mulaney’s special aired, because there’s nothing more on-brand for a special about Los Angeles culture than cross-promotional synergy) .
“I don’t know. Because they let me,” Seinfeld responds, referring to Netflix. “Probably the same reason why you’re doing this.

Los Angeles is not the first city fans would associate with comedian John Mulaney. That would be Chicago, his hometown and the backdrop to innumerable childhood anecdotes in his stand-up act, or New York, where he broke out as a writer on “Saturday Night Live” and shot a special at Radio City Music Hall. But L.A. is where Mulaney now lives; it’s also currently home to the second iteration of Netflix Is a Joke, a massive, weeklong comedy festival organized by the streaming service as a show of genre dominance. (Netflix stand-up head Robbie Praw used to run programming at Montreal’s vaunted Just for Laughs event and has essentially created a West Coast version.) And so we have “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in LA,” a weeklong special event combining studio segments, pre-taped sketches and man-on-the-street interviews into a sort of pop-up talk show.

Born Eugene L. Kay, also known as “Dusty,” a writer and Emmy-nominated producer whose credits include “Entourage,” “Roseanne” and “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” died on April 10 in Summerlin, Nev., following a brief illness, his long time collaborator and friend Bill Nuss announced. He was 69.
Kay was born in the Bronx, N.Y., and grew up in Yonkers and Spring Valley. Comedies have always been Richard Kind‘s bread and butter. With memorable roles in shows like Spin City, Mad About You, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Other Two, and now the Night Court reboot, the 67-year-old star has long been one of the industry’s best character actors. But he tells TV Insider that he craves his chance at a dramatic turn like his Spin City co-star/longtime friend Alan Ruck, who showed his dramatic chops in the incomparable HBO series Succession. After being “raised” on the original Night Court and long admiring John Larroquette‘s performance as Dan Fielding, Kind made his Night Court debut in Season 2 Episode 7 on Tuesday, February 13 on NBC. He plays Sy Feldman, a disgraced Broadway producer who’s in legal trouble over faulty investments in his failed shows. The character is a lot like Max Bialystok of The Producers, whom Kind played on Broadway in 2004 opposite Ruck as Leo Bloom.

Richard Kind‘s Cousin Andy won’t be among the guest stars of Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s final season, the star confirms to TV Insider. The beloved character actor has guest starred as Larry David‘s painfully, hilariously boring cousin in eight episodes across six seasons of the hit HBO comedy, but Kind says that Season 11 Episode 3, which aired on November 7, 2021, was his last. Kind clarifies there’s no other reason for his absence, other than the character simply isn’t in Season 12. “I’m not in the final season, but I’m fine with it,” Kind tells TV Insider. “The only reason I’m fine with it is because everybody always asks, ‘Is Larry really like that?’ And so I got to answer that. Now, they don’t say that. They go, ‘Are you in the last season?’ And I go, ‘No, I’m not.’ And then they go,...

If there’s a funny show on TV, it’s a pretty good bet that Richard Kind has appeared on it.
The veteran actor has logged memorable guest appearances on dozens of TV comedies over the years, along with regular stints on Mad About You and Spin City, among others. So it’s no surprise that Kind pops up on this Tuesday’s Night Court (NBC, 8/7c) as unscrupulous Broadway producer Sy, who lands in court after getting caught selling fake theater memorabilia. So did Kind base this character on any Broadway producers he may have worked with?

When Lauren Boebert put some blame on Hollywood for forcing her to switch Colorado districts in her reelection bid, she was just the latest in a long line of Republicans to target the industry and its lopsided support for the left.
Not a cycle goes by where some GOP candidate doesn’t attack Hollywood, with a donor pool that overwhelmingly backs Democrats.
Speaking over the weekend to Steve Bannon for his podcast, Boebert accused “Hollywood elites who are trying to buy my current district.” “It’s not just Aspen that the money is coming from,” she said. “It’s coming from Hollywood. Ending the year in signs is the hilarious, adventurous, sharp-tongued era of Sagittarius.
There’s truly nothing like them. They are quirky, mysterious and full of life. While they naturally grab the attention in the room, they feel most comfortable when they’re in their lonesome.
Sagittarius is the jack-of-trades sign; the sign that takes up space in every all industries — whether they be an actor, comedian or a bus driver — their versatility allows them to do it all. And that flexibility helps fuel their “I’ll try anything once” mindset. To them, what is life if you’re not living it to your fullest? The only thing you have to beware of is their slick mouth. Between Sagittarius, Virgo and Aries it’s hard to tell which sign is more brutally honest. Truly, to know Sagittarius is to love them. And if you don’t love…it doesn’t...

How fitting is it that on the morning after the official end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, one of the first new trailers we get is from a movie about unleashing all sorts of heightened emotions? This moment of perfectly-timed collective catharsis comes courtesy of Pixar, as the animation studio has released our initial look at one of their most highly-anticipated sequels ever: "Inside Out 2." The 2015 original left nary a dry eye in the room after introducing the world to young Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) and the torrent of preadolescent feelings swirling around her head. And just when we thought we could start to recover from what happened to the lovable Bing Bong (Richard Kind), they've gone ahead with a sequel that's sure to be another emotional roller coaster.
The twist this time around, of course, will be the introduction of a whole new set of emotions to coincide with Riley...

A Jewish family in New York is going about their day; every member is embroiled in his or her own idea about how things are and how they should be. The vignette-y film by director Evan Oppenheimer titled The Magnificent Meyersons, behaves more as a stage play than a film because of its heavy dialogue. There are no actual aliens shown in the film, but someone alienated does visit the Meyersons, and their world undergoes a change. There are some strong performances in the film, but Richard Kind leaves an unforgettable impact, even though he doesn’t have a lot of screen time.

Naming a TV series is no small feat. When shows are in development, they often lack a name. As the project gets closer to production and an eventual order, the topic of names comes up. Some shows are named quickly, while others take time to figure out what fits best. NBC had difficulty finding the perfect title for the series that would eventually become Mad About You. While network executives couldn’t find the perfect name, they knew what they wanted to avoid. Despite his manager’s best efforts, Paul Reiser’s name would never become the show’s title.
