The Imitation Game breakout and all-round rising star Alex Lawther is coming hot off one of, if not the bleakest episodes of Black Mirror to date – and that’s truly saying something, given how dark Charlie Brooker’s anthology series tends to be – but Deadline brings word that the young Brit will remain firmly in thriller territory for Ghost Stories.
Shooting on the supernatural pic is now underway, according to Deadline, with Lawther starring opposite Paul Whitehouse, Andy Nynam, Sherlock stalwart Martin Freeman and George MacKay. Jeremy Dyson (The League of Gentlemen) is directing from an Olivier-nominated stage play, one he penned with co-writer Nyman after he headlined the original theater production.
Often compared to The Woman in Black for its brooding tone, Ghost Stories will have Nyman take point as Phillip Goodman, a “professor of psychology and arch-skeptic” who finds his scientific knowledge put to the sword when he...

Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations. Not far behind are Birdman and The Theory of Everything with ten nods apiece. All three films have earned nods in many of the same top categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and in their respective Best Screenplay categories.

The good folks who brought us Donkey Punch and Kill List, Warp Films, have lots more subversive slivers of scares in store for us in the coming months, and we've got the 411 on each of them for you! Dig it!
According to Screen Daily Warp Films has made several acquisitions at Cannes including the rights to Rachel Ward's Numbers, a supernatural thriller "about a young woman who sees the dates of strangers' deaths." Paul Fraser will adapt.
Warp is working with creative team Shynola, who will make the sci-fi thriller Redmen, adapted from the novel The Red Men by Matthew de Abaitua. Polly Stokes and Mary Burke will also produce the debut feature of BAFTA short winner Paul Wright. "'The Red Men' is at heart a novel about a character wrestling with his conscience, set against a pervasive and Orwellian vision of contemporary society: surveillance, automation, biotechnology, and their implications for our humanity.

Peter Strickland, the Efa's Discovery of the Year award in 2009 and Silver Bear (Berlin Film Fest) winning director for Katalin Varga, has began shooting his sophomore project in London and not Italy as some wad been reporting. Toplined by Toby Jones who finds himself in the engineer's chair, Berberian Sound Studio is going to be a hot title for 2012 as it is being produced by some interesting names in Keith Griffiths (he works with Thai Joe) and Mary Burke (who is coming off the extremely popular festival title, Submarine). Hans Geissendoerfer is co-producing alongside Film4’s Katherine Butler, Warp X's Robin Gutch and Screen Yorkshire’s Hugo Heppell are serving as executive producers. It has been several weeks since any Criterion films have found their way onto the list of films available on Netflix Watch Instantly. There were a few months where every other week we saw dozens of Criterion films added.
In a very auspicious act, Netflix has added Steve McQueen’s 2008 film, Hunger, to their Watch Insantly selection. It is auspicious in that we are going to be recording a podcast this Friday, June 11th, discussing this harrowing film with a special guest!
The film dramatically recreates the imprisonment of Bobby Sands, an Ira member who goes on a six week long hunger strike, through an incredible performance by Michael Fassbender.
This film was released several months ago by Criterion (as part of their deal with IFC Films) on DVD and Blu-ray. So listeners who are eager to join in on the discussion have yet another format with which to watch the film on.

Without a good sound mix horror, more than any other genre, would be far less effective. Imagine movies like The Blair Witch Project or Paranormal Activity without their children laughing or things going bump in the night. A good mix makes all the difference, I tell ya! It seems only natural that a horror movie based upon time spent mixing various sounds would come out sooner or later.

The 2009 BAFTA Award nominees have been announced and Slumdog Millionaire, along with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, leads the way with 11 nominations with The Dark Knight close behind with nine. However, at the top of the pile it is immediately noticeable that The Dark Knight did not get a Best Film nomination as all the usual suspects are there, but The Reader is added to the pack as one of its five nominations. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) is considered a lead actor at the BAFTAs and earns a nomination in the category while he is competing Stateside for a Supporting nom. I believe he is more of a lead actor than a supporting, but Fox Searchlight obviously sees the supporting category as the easier place to get him a nomination and has pushed him in the category as a result. Other than that, the usuals are there with Brad Pitt earning a nomination,...

Toronto International Film Festival
TORONTO -- Serving up Imax-sized awe on a regular screen, "Touching the Void" is a harrowing dramatic recounting of an ill-fated 1985 climbing expedition in the Peruvian Andes.
The film is based on the international best seller of the same name by Joe Simpson, one of the two mountaineers who took on the treacherous Siula Grande peak and learned the hard way why it had been hitherto unclimbed, and it combines candid recollections and spectacularly photographed dramatic reconstructions to highly compelling effect.
While originally developed for television, the unique docudrama, which was recently picked up by IFC Films, should have no trouble drawing the "Into Thin Air"/"Shackleton" crowd.
Director Kevin Macdonald, who won an Oscar for his 2000 documentary "One Day in September", which chronicled the tragic hostage-taking of the Israeli Olympic team at the 1972 Munich Games, has found an interesting way to retell Simpson's story.
As Simpson and his climbing partner recount the events of almost 20 years ago in a studio, talking heads-style, a pair of actors (Brendan Mackey and Nicholas Aaron) play their young counterparts and all too convincingly relive the experience.
On the way down after ascending the challenging West Face of the Siula Grande, Simpson falls and shatters his leg. Still managing to proceed despite the tremendous pain and rapidly worsening weather conditions, Simpson sees his fortunes go from bad to worse when he suddenly finds himself dangling helplessly by a rope from a 100-foot ice cliff -- and threatening to drag Simon Yates down off the mountain along with him.
Yates, unable to see what has happened to his buddy or hear him yelling far below in the swirling blizzard, presumes the worst and ultimately makes the (still contentious) decision to cut the rope that is connecting them.
Yates eventually makes it back to base camp, while Simpson, who has fallen into a gigantic crevasse, somehow manages to crawl down off the mountain 3 1/2 days later in a state of rapidly advancing physical and psychological deterioration.
In theory, the constant flip-flopping between the real-life Simpson and Yates and the actors re-creating their nightmarish experience might have had the effect of distancing one from the drama. In fact, the opposite is the case.
The presence of the actual men provides an opportunity to convey their inner thoughts and motivations alongside the more physical aspects of their survival ordeal.
Factoring in Mike Eley's breathtakingly vivid photography and a virtuoso sound mix that completely envelops the viewer, it's enough to make you never again want to poke your head into the freezer.

TORONTO -- Serving up Imax-sized awe on a regular screen, "Touching the Void" is a harrowing dramatic recounting of an ill-fated 1985 climbing expedition in the Peruvian Andes.
