Itvx will stream comedy shows live from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this August, and here are the details.
The Edinburgh Fringe is one of the greatest arts festivals in the world. Each year in August, artists, comedians, writers, performers, musicians and everybody inbetween descend on the Royal Mile to sell their shows to passing punters.
Television series like Phoebe Waller Bridge’s Fleabag and Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer, which is quickly becoming one of the most popular shows on Netflix, began life as Edinburgh Fringe shows. In 2004, director Annie Griffin made the micro budget dark comedy Festival. Set and filmed at the Fringe, it starred Stephen Mangan as an arrogant comedian.
Streaming platform Itvx has commissioned four hour-long episodes of Itvx Presents: Edinburgh Fringe Live, which will broadcast live from the arts festival. Each show will focus on specially curated compilation shows in which performers will present highlights from their festival shows.

The source of this week’s other televised literary adaptation can’t claim the same global reach as “The Lord of the Rings,” but Sally Andrew’s Tannie Maria novels have proven reliable bestsellers in the author’s native South Africa since their 2015 debut. They now provide the basis of “Recipes for Love and Murder,” a South African-Scottish co-production that represents the daffiest addition yet to Acorn TV’s burgeoning portfolio of genial timepassers.
To some degree, this is formula fare with a capital F: mild comic, romantic and criminal misadventures in a picturesque setting. Watch enough of it, and you realize even individual scenes have their own formula. Find a cosy location, add light seasonings of plot and piano, and – lest anybody still feel too challenged – serve with a cutesy punchline, typically someone offering to put a kettle on somewhere. From its foundations up, it’s tea-break television.

When I caught up with the lovely Maria Kennedy Doyle to chat about her new role in Acorn TV's Recipes for Love and Murder, it was a gloriously warm day for us both.
Maria laughed that the people in Dublin didn't know what to do with themselves with so much sunshine, and the shops were cleaned out of sun cream.
While others might have been lamenting the unexpected heatwave, Maria was reveling in it as "an unexpected treasure."
Since Kennedy burst onto the scene with The Commitments in 1991, she's been a hot commodity in the industry. Her ability to make every role unique even when, on paper, they may seem similar is truly a gift.
That's not to say that Kennedy hasn't had a wide breadth of roles. From The Tudors to Dexter to Orphan Black, Kin, and Outlander, she makes the most of every character, and they're nearly all fan-favorites of any series.

A quirky, colorful murder mystery set in the South African outback will be served up in “Recipes for Love and Murder,” which premieres its first two episodes Feb. 15 as part of the Berlinale Series Market Selects lineup at the European Film Market.
Based on the best-selling novels by Sally Andrew, the series follows recipe advice columnist Tannie Maria and her colleague, rookie journalist Jessie September, who spring into action when a woman who was seeking advice about an abusive husband is found dead.
Between cooking rich mutton curry and decadent chocolate cake, answering letters, and getting in the way of the local policemen, Maria and Jessie are determined to solve this murder mystery and catch the killer. But the killer might be following their traces just as quickly as they are hunting him.

Outlander Season 5, Episode 10
“Mercy Shall Follow Me” features the Frasier-Mackenzie confrontation with the dreadful Stephen Bonnet. Fans have been waiting for this inevitable clash. However, the presentation of the confrontation in the script raises questions of historical veracity as well as Outlander’s continued reliance on exploiting rape trauma for shock value.
The episode begins in Wilmington, with Jocasta’s lawyer Forbes and Bonnet chatting openly in a tavern about murdering Jocasta and Duncan Innes and defrauding River Run. Forbes has sent a backhander to the magistrate and secured witnesses to attest to Bonnet being Jemmy’s father. Forbes also advises Bonnet that he is hearing rumors about involvement in sex trafficking and that it may undermine their plans. It’s clear Jamie’s trap for Bonnet did not take into account the extent of his dealings. This conversation also sets the stage for the...

Outlander Season 5, Episode 9
“Of Monsters and Heroes” is the rare Outlander episode this season to have every character’s plot revolve around one single event. Once again, wildlife threatens the lives of the Fraser’s Ridge residents and the aftermath affects every single member of the Fraser family. Compelling cast performances plus a script reconciling show canon with book canon mark this episode as one of the best of the season.
Many scenes from the book The Fiery Cross focus on daily and seasonal routines, which is something we see translated onto the screen here. The bison from the Season 4 credits return. Originally, they were a symbol of British colonists moving further west, but now they present a more practical purpose: as a food source. While few may associate bison with North Carolina, they also roamed the east coast before overhunting drove herds west. Josiah...

We interview Michelle Gomez about slapstick, stand-up, Steven Moffat, playing Doctor Who's Missy, and her new web series...
Michelle Gomez, seen last year as Doctor Who’s havoc-causing, murderous Missy, has a memorable history of bananas TV roles behind her. There’s been Green Wing’s Sue White, Bad Education’s Pickwell, and more recently Psychobitches’ meth-head Mary Queen Of Scots and projectile-vomiting Margaret Thatcher.
If you were to make a Venn diagram depicting the crossover between deeply funny and fundamentally unhinged TV characters, you'd likely end up with just a .gif of Gomez, gnashing her teeth and riding a camel.
In new web series Heather’s American Medicine, she takes on another comic persona, that of a straight-talking online agony aunt doling out highly questionable advice to America’s troubled citizens.
We caught up with Gomez, whose take on The Master is confirmed to be returning to Doctor Who this year,...

Andrew offers up ten screenwriting names on our wishlist for appearing on the front of future Doctor Who scripts...
Gone are the days where you could send a letter to Peter Darvill-Evans and write a New Adventure. Big Finish will occasionally hold a writing competition, but for most of the time your examination of what it truly means to be an Ogri will be returned unopened. Fan-fiction will never surpass the heights of Ben Chatham's adventures (apart from all the many times it will), and so it came to pass that Doctor Who writing became something of a closed world. The positives of this outweigh the negatives.

Sundance is well and truly over out in Park City, with some very promising films making their debut out in Utah. And with the year’s first big festival complete, we turn our eyes next to the Berlinale, and then shortly after, the Glasgow Film Festival.
The line-up for this year’s Glasgow Film Festival was announced earlier in the month, with an absolutely stellar set of films landing their UK premiere up in Scotland next month.
Régis Roinsard’s Populaire has been selected for the Opening Night Film, with Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing chosen for the Closing Night Film. And in between is a slew of films, including some of the most highly-anticipated of the year: Derek Cianfrance’s The Place Beyond the Pines; Neil Jordan’s Byzantium; Michael Winterbottom’s The Look of Love; and Nicolás López’s Aftershock, with Eli Roth.

With cinematic releases at the moment mostly involving the not-particularly inspiring likes of "That's My Boy" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," it's hard not to look to television for a little nourishment. The trouble is that the TV season has wrapped up for the year. While a few shows (namely "Girls") are still wrapping up, and others get underway shortly ("The Newsroom," "Breaking Bad," "Louie"), it's pretty quiet on the box, with cast and creatives focusing on making a hiatus movie, campaigning for Emmy, or just getting some sleep for once.
Still, with the 2011/2012 TV season done, we thought we'd shine a light on the small screen this week. Tomorrow, we're going to run down our ten favorite TV series of the last 12 months, but today, we wanted to pick a few stars of these shows that we think are set to break out as movie stars before too long,...

Edinburgh on film isn't just Trainspotting it's classics: Chariots of Fire, romance: One Day and thrills: Burke and Hare. Here are 10, picked by Andrew Pulver, film editor of the Guardian
• As featured in our Edinburgh city guide
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Ronald Neame, 1969
Muriel Spark's celebrated 1961 novella was, until Trainspotting, Edinburgh's most readily identifiable contribution to modern literature. Inspired largely by Spark's own time at [James] Gillespie's school, this elaborate, empathetic satire on a fascism-admiring teacher would not have been expected to be a major candidate for Oscar attention, but Maggie Smith won the best actress award in 1969, after Ronald "Poseidon Adventure" Neame directed the film version. Sixties Edinburgh has no problem standing in for 30s Edinburgh: the Marcia Blaine school is sited in the Edinburgh Academy building in Henderson Row, while it's possible to stand in the exact same spot as Maggie Smith on the Grassmarket and bellow: "Observe,...

- Sam Riley and Anton Corbijn should pack lite on November 28th as Control, by far the best Brit indie film of the year, leads the way in terms of noms for the 10th at the British Independent Film Awards. And When Did You Last See Your Father? has also received a fair share of noms with 7, followed by Hallam Foe with six and Eastern Promises with five. Newcomer Sam Riley is a shoe-in for the acting and most promising newcomer awards, although it would be a treat to see Kierston Wareing take something home for her bit in Ken Loach's It's a Free World.... The jury comprises actors Hayley Atwell, Archie Panjabi, Kathy Burke, Tony Curran, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Matthew Macfadyen; directors Annie Griffin, Menhaj Huda, Neil Marshall and Peter Webber; London Film Festival artistic director Sandra Hebron; producer Mark Herbert; cinematographer Brian Tufano; distributor Will Clarke; and musician Nitin Sawhney.

DINARD, France -- In My Father's Den, directed by New Zealander Brad McGann, swept the board at the Dinard Festival of British Film on Saturday, taking the Golden Hitchcock award for best film, the best cinematography prize and the audience award. The movie stars Matthew MacFadyen as a war reporter who returns to his native New Zealand after his father's death and befriends a 16-year-old girl, only to find himself the key suspect when she disappears. The film qualified for inclusion at Dinard because it has a U.K. co-producer, Dixie Linder. A new award for best screenplay among the six movies in competition went to Festival, an ensemble comedy set during the Edinburgh comedy fest written and directed by Annie Griffin. As with McGann's picture, it was her first feature film as director.
