The opening scenes of director Christian Sparkes’ The King Tide set an ominous tone: a powerful storm takes down the power lines of a small island town as a pregnant woman loses her child while her dementia-suffering mother sits nearby. In the morning, as the town takes stock of the damage and the power is restored, a surprising discovery is found in an overturned boat in the harbour: a baby girl…with the ability to heal.
Writers Albert Shin and William Woods, working from a story by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, treat the story as something of a morality tale mixed with a fable. Following the cold open, the action jumps ahead 10 years at a point when the unnamed island is thriving. The fishing is bountiful, the islanders are self-sufficient and have cut ties with the mainland, and most everyone is happy.

"She was delivered to us..." Vvs Films has revealed the full official trailer for a mysterious religious drama titled The King Tide, set in a struggling East Coast island community in Canada. This indie thriller first premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Atlantic & Cinéfest Sudbury Film Fests. After the mayor of an idyllic island village discovers a child with mysterious powers awash on their shores, the once peaceful community is divided by conflict, torn over the belief the child is the next savior. Isla's adoptive parents must decide whether her safety takes precedence over what the community believes. The cast features Frances Fisher, Clayne Crawford, Aden Young, Michael Greyeyes, Lara Jean Chorostecki, and Kathryn Greenwood, with Alix West Lefler starring as 10-year-old Isla. TIFF describes it further: "It’s a story about an insular community refusing to accept a much larger world beyond its shores,...

Continuing my new Christmas movie watching for Nerdly, EXmas features on the Amazon-linked app Freevee, and sees Graham (Robbie Amell) surprise his family at Christmas only to discover that his ex-fiancée, Ali (Leighton Meester) had been invited, and is already there celebrating the holiday with his family. And with neither wanting to leave, they will have to put up with each other, all while keeping the family happy.
Christmas is the only time you will catch me watching this kind of rom-com, as I usually find the stories too repetitive and uninteresting. I, and most audiences watching, know exactly what is going to happen in this type of movie, even before I’ve watched it but that really doesn’t make any difference in my enjoyment of it.

It's the holiday season when networks compete to see who can create the most creative holiday rom-com. Some are cliche and forgettable, whereas others are instant classics and watched annually.
EXmas, written by Dan Steele and directed by Jonah Feingold, was a delightful rom-com. It's sure to be a holiday hit for Amazon Freevee.
EXmas stars Robbie Amell and Leighton Meester as exes forced to spend the holidays together after a misunderstanding with Graham's (Amell) family. At the same time, this may seem like a cliche plot, but the actors' infectious chemistry and the over-the-top holiday decor sell it.
Graham seemed like Scrooge since he immersed himself in his work and wasn't going home for the holidays. He only changed his mind after his family guilted him into it, so naturally, he didn't understand why they weren't thrilled to see him.

EXmas is a delightful holiday rom-com featuring some classic but relatable tropes. While we may not find our ex at our holiday table, most of us have longed for a holiday like the Stroops share.
It features charismatic stars, including Robbie Amell as Grham and Leighton Meester as Ali. Michael Hitchcock and Kathryn Greenwood were hilarious and Graham’s holiday-obsessed parents.
Jonah Feingold loves directing com-coms, and he’s had great success with his two prior films, Dating in New York and At Midnight. We were excited to speak with him about how he directed Amazon Freevee’s EXmas.
Feingold spoke with us during a recent virtual press day about which holiday films inspired him, how he selected the cast, and how essential the family dynamics were to this film.
Check it out below.

Leighton Meester and Robbie Amell play exes with a vendetta in the upcoming Amazon Freevee rom-com “EXmas,” except unlike other former flames, ex-fiancés Ali (Meester) and Graham (Amell) are dealing with their tensions under the same roof.
In an exclusive clip shared with TheWrap, Ali and Graham weather the cold while fishing in a lodge with Graham’s father and brother when Graham’s dad asks the pair if they have been dating since breaking up.
“Everyone,” Graham replies, adding that he’s “not discriminating against any dating app” and is “going head-first.”
“Wow, that’s disgusting,” Ali responds in the clip.
As the group shivers in the freezing temperatures, Ali asks the family to move the heater closer to her, to which Graham responds “no, you don’t have to do that — it’s fine where it is.”
“It’s getting everybody I think,” Graham insists.

The first time Frances Fisher’s character appears in The King Tide, she’s stooped, uncommunicative, crushed by life and perhaps by a stroke. When the main action picks up, 10 years later, she’s a glowing picture of New Agey vim and vigor, and the island where she lives has been transformed. Nobody fears illness anymore because all discomforts and injuries are relieved by the miraculous healing powers of a little girl. The small population is united and harmonious — until the little girl’s powers lapse.
In this story of strong atmospherics and well-etched types, an isolated community discovers an otherworldly source of harmony, and the North Atlantic setting is as much a character as any of the villagers. Shooting in the tiny Newfoundland town of Keels, director Christian Sparkes (Hammer) plunges straight into a mood of crisis and foreboding with scenes of a pregnant woman’s bloody miscarriage and a disruptive storm.

"Riding in cars with high schoolers?!" So dangerous! Disney has unveiled the official trailer for a comedy called World's Best, co-written by and starring actor / rapper Utkarsh Ambudkar. The film is about a young 12-year-old mathematics genius named Prem Patel who discovers his deceased father was actually a great rapper. He immediately sets out to pursue a career as a rap superstar, in addition to continuing to ace math competitions. Newcomer Manny Magnus stars as Prem, and Ambudkar appears as his father Suresh in visions to help him accomplish his dreams and overcome the bullying that is holding him back. The cast also includes Punam Patel, Jake Choi, Max Malas, Piper Wallace, Kayla Njeri, Dorian Giordano, and Kathryn Greenwood. "Dream exponentially" - is the tagline. This has that usual Disney cheesiness, with a cliche "follow your dreams" plot, though it looks like good fun. And the mix of math + rap is amusing.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Ghosts Season 2, Episode 6, “The Baby Bjorn.”] It’s not every day you discover you’ve been living down the road from a long-lost relative without your knowledge, but that was exactly the case for Ghosts‘ resident Viking, Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) in the latest episode, “The Baby Bjorn.” The installment offered new insight into the brawny figure’s past as a flashback revealed Thorfinn’s role as a father to baby Bjorn. In the years following his departure from Norway though, Bjorn (Christian Jadah) grew up and sought out his father in America only to perish on the land now belonging to the Farnsbys, Margaret (Kathryn Greenwood) and Henry (Mark Linn-Baker). “Two ship-lengths” away as the characters put it in the show. “It’s kind of a big revelation,” Long tells TV Insider. “So it’s just a treat really, and also it’s like, ‘wait, hold on, I got a kid.
