Photo: 'Words on Bathroom Walls'/Amazon Prime Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers! “How hard would it be to hide by insanity from high school?” - In This Life? Impossible. Heads up, there will be spoilers because to do this film's underlying meaning justice, you must understand it all. Directed by Thor Freudenthal, written for the screen by Nick Naveda, and based on Julia Walton's novel, 'Words on Bathroom Walls’ is a young adult film that discusses the impact and inner struggle of mental illness. At the beginning of 'Words on Bathroom Walls,' the audience is introduced to Adam, portrayed by Charlie Plummer, who is experiencing internal voices he has learned to silence oddly enough by eating. For the first time since cinemas reopened, two titles have earned more than $1 million in a single weekend, with The Witches bowing and The War With Grandpa continuing to climb.
It’s a positive sign for exhibitors in the lead up to the school holidays and the end of year, with titles The Croods: A New Age, Wonder Woman 1984 and The Dry all on the horizon.
Robert Zemeckis’ Roald Dahl adaptation, starring Anne Hathaway and Octavia Spencer, ranked no. 1, opening on $1.13 million from 396 screens (or $1.6 million with previews) for Warner Bros.
While some exhibitors are dismayed by the film’s M-rating, arguing it limits how accessible it is for families, it is still the best opening weekend for any film since Christopher Nolan’s Tenet on August 27.
It’s also equivalent with The Addams Family, a WB title released this time last year, in a pre-covid world.

This YA drama about a teenager with schizophrenia is well-intentioned and well-acted but relies too heavily on the cliches of high-school life
Yet again, Hollywood is here to educate us about mental health – but not with too much realism, because that would be a downer. This is a lively and sensitively acted YA drama about a teenager with schizophrenia from Diary of a Wimpy Kid director Thor Freudenthal, but it feels like a semi-copout.
Freudenthal clearly wants to say something deep and important about illness and stigma but at the same time appears to have cleared the shelves of sanitiser in Boots. After promising start, Words on Bathroom Walls turns into another prettified, picturesque portrait of mental illness. And surely even teenagers will feel as if they’ve seen the big-hugs happy ending here a hundred times already.

Words On Bathroom Walls tells the familiar story of bright 16-year old Adam (Charlie Plummer), who suffers from schizophrenia. Expelled following a fistfight, he is sent to a Catholic school to finish out his senior year. Adam makes little attempt to fit in until he meets Maya (Taylor Russell), a hyper-intelligent girl from the wrong side of the tracks and there is an instant soulful and romantic connection. When he starts hearing voices and seeing people who aren’t there, he attempts to hide his illness because he fears it will interfere with his dream of attending culinary school.

After numerous delays, Well Go USA’s Cut Throat City is finally making its debut — and in theaters. Yes, you heard that right. The RZA-directed crime drama will make its way into select theaters starting today as they slowly start to open their doors across the country.
“Well Go is a supporter of the traditional theatrical window and when we initially read the script a couple years ago we truly envisioned Cut Throat City as a wide theatrical release,” said Doris Pfardrescher, President & CEO, Well Go USA. “It is a socially relevant film that we feel needs to be seen on the big screen. We also want to help support the cinemas as best we can in bringing life back to their business.”
She added, “Obviously, safety is an important part of reopening but we do feel that the cinemas are taking every precaution to make us all and the environment feel safe.

The film release calendar has always played home to serendipitous programming choices, from movies with strangely similar titles hitting at the same time to features that seem ripped from the same script (as with the infamous 1998 double whammy of “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon”), but this week at the movies offers something with a twist: two new movies with not just closely aligned plots, but nearly identical praise. Two is a trend!

The 1999 Drew Barrymore romcom “Never Been Kissed” is referenced multiple times in “Words on Bathroom Walls,” with the older film cast in a rosy Proustian glow that may come as a jolt to any viewers who remember the 20th century. Fully 21st-century teens Adam (Charlie Plummer) and Maya (Taylor Russell) describe it as a “classic” and a “cinematic masterpiece” with equal parts affection and irony, believing themselves a little smarter than its cozy high-school movie clichés. So does “Words on Bathroom Walls,” in ways that sometimes pay off strikingly.
A teen movie for the generation of mental health awareness, this slick, well-acted adaptation of Julia Walton’s popular Ya novel complicates typical coming-of-age stakes and obstacles with the disorienting realities of the hero’s diagnosed schizophrenia, giving unusual, anxious treatment to the genre’s standard set pieces — from dreamy prom night to rousing graduation speech — along the way.

It would have been very easy for Words on Bathroom Walls to take a simplistic approach to the story that it’s telling. Young Adult novels that get turned into movies tend to lean on heavy themes, but don’t always tackle them in particularly mature ways. This one, however, is willing to go that route, allowing themes of mental illness to get the gravitas that it deserves. Much like The Fault in Our Stars managed to overcome its Ya routes to become something more, this one is able to as well. It’s not on the level of that Ya tearjerker, but it’s a quality new release well worth your time this week. The film is a teen drama, following Adam (Charlie Plummer), who seems to be your garden variety high schooler. Everything on the outside makes him appear to be a young adult like any other, even...

"Is that why you didn't tell me?" Roadside Attractions has unveiled the first official trailer for a smart teen romance Words on Bathroom Walls, the latest from director Thor Freudenthal. Adapted from the novel of the same name, the film stars Charlie Plummer as a "typical young adult" in high school. He is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, which he keeps a secret from everyone else, and hopes his new experimental drug treatment will help him navigate high school and the outside world. Also starring Taylor Russell (from Waves) as a young woman who he falls in love with and helps support him dealing with all of it. With AnnaSophia Robb, Walton Goggins, Andy Garcia, Molly Parker, Devon Bostick, and Beth Grant. This has some striking visuals that connect with what his schizophrenic mind is showing him. Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan is looking forward to Disney+’s upcoming series adaptation of his beloved Ya fantasy series, and making clear he is not a fan of the previous film adaptations. Riordan shared his thoughts with fans today on Twitter.
“I still have not seen the movies, and don’t plan on ever doing so,” Riordan tweeted. “I judge them from having read the scripts, because I care most about the story. I certainly have nothing against the very talented actors. Not their fault. I’m just sorry they got dragged into that mess.”
He continued, “Well, to you guys, it’s a couple hours’ entertainment. To me, it’s my life’s work going through a meat grinder when I pleaded with them not to do it. So yeah. But it’s fine. All fine. We’re gonna fix it soon.”

It’s time to check out what Disney+ UK has planned for June! Last month, the streaming service added Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as its centrepiece, and this month will see the arrival of a first-look premiere in Kenneth Branagh’s new family film Artemis Fowl, which has skipped its cinema release and landed on Disney+. The big budget movie is based on the bestselling book by Eoin Colfer, and follows 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl as he sets out to find his missing dad. The project boasts a stellar cast that includes Ferdia Show, Colin Farrell, Josh Gad and Judi Dench. We’ll at least get a quick chance to guess for ourselves if it would have been a box office hit for the mouse house or not.

Nc is open for filming, after a confusing few years.
Currently, North Carolina can celebrate the Oscar wins for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and the forthcoming theatrical release of Sundance hit American Animals, a Kentucky-set story directed by British director Bart Layton that was mostly shot near Charlotte, including at Davidson College.
These two films coincidentally both have British production companies – Blueprint Pictures and Raw, respectively, and Film4 backs both features. They are a clear signal to both Us and international producers that Nc is open for filming, after a confusing few years.
