Given the NewImages Festival’s remit to welcome diverse artistic voices into the immersive space, programing “Noire” was an obvious choice. An augmented reality adaptation of a lesser-known case from the Civil Rights era, “Noire” brought much pedigree to this year’s Paris Xr showcase.
The project tracks the true story of Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl in the segregated South who refused to give up her seat on the bus nine months before Rosa Parks did the same. Colvin’s act helped kick off the Montgomery bus boycott, but her courage never quite got the same traction as that of Parks – in part because she didn’t make for as compelling a media figure.
Ironically, that’s exactly what compelled French author Tania de Montaigne, who sought to explore that era – and its wider questions of racism and resistance – using figures untouched by hagiography. The author’s 2015 biographical essay...

In 2020, director Hsin-Chien Huang won the NewImages Festival’s top prize for “Bodyless,” a dreamlike exploration of his own childhood growing up under Taiwanese martial law. That year’s jury was led by French music producer and composer Jean-Michel Jarre – and sometime over the course of the festival the two men hit it off.
This year, the fast friends will return as creative partners and co-directors of “The Eye and I,” a visual and musical collaboration screening in NewImages’ competition and born of the festival’s wider goal to develop the immersive ecosystem in part by encouraging such outcomes.
“Our mission is to connect people,” says festival director Michele Ziegler. “We’re always looking to expand our circle and build our community – and we hope more and more people will join.”
Indeed, a bout of jury duty has proven to be a powerful motivator, as Jarre is hardly the first creative to make the leap.

The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the inaugural lineup for its Immersive Competition section, the first-ever selection of augmented and virtual reality works to screen at the austere French film fest.
The 8 competition titles and 6 out-of-competition screenings include works featuring such talents as Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Millie Bobby Brown, and Tahar Rahim. The lineup highlights cutting-edge VR and Ar techniques and includes location-based virtual reality, mixed reality experiences, projection mapping, and holographic works.
Introducing the new immersive section, Cannes said it hoped to “spotlight the next generation of international artists who are redefining storytelling and inventing new narrative-driven experiences that move beyond the traditional two-dimensional cinema screen.” The section is being organized with support from the French national film board, the Cnc. The immersive works will be presented at an exhibition space in the Cannes Cineum complex on the outskirts of the city and at the campus of Cannes’s Georges Méliès film school.

“Series Mania is mine!” shouts Logan Roy, in a promo video dropped today that blurs the lines of industry confab and fiction.
The Succession patriarch makes a short comedy cameo in a social media trailer video for France’s Series Mania, which runs between March 15-22 in Lille, France.
“Paris is so overrated. Lille is the new Paris,” says a voiceover as the video begins, before the words ‘Emily in Lille’ overlay the screen.
A surreal comic sketch follows, with an apologetic Series Mania boss Laurence Herszberg rushing into a posh office room in character as Emily from Emily in Paris, which has run on Netflix for three seasons so far and stars Lilly Collins as an aspiring marketing executive who moves to Paris to provide an American perspective to a French agency.

From 13-19 November, the 14th Segovia European Film Festival will enrapture its audience with the crème de la crème of the Continent’s audiovisual output. Between 13 and 19 November, Segovia is organising its European Film Festival – Muces, which, at its 14th edition, will boast the presence of France’s David and Stéphane Foenkinos as they introduce the movies Delicacy, Jalouse and The Mystery of Henri Pick, and talk about the interplay between film and literature. The gathering will also offer strands entitled Film and Architecture, Film and History, Film and Sport, Film and Cuisine, and two that mark certain dates in history: the centenary of Antonio Machado’s arrival in Segovia, and the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which includes titles such as Barbara, directed by Christian Petzold, the TV productions Bornholmer Straße by Christian Schwochow and Train to Freedom by Sebastian Dehnhardt and Matthias Schmidt, and.
Audrey Tautou made it clear to audiences that she had a certain je ne sais quoi when she appeared in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie as a free-spirited pixie living in a dream world of her own creation, but to her credit even that fantastic little film didn’t fully disclose her depth as an actress. A full decade later, and Tautou is only more strikingly beautiful from age and her ability to impart years of emotional heartbreak into a single glance has only improved. She puts that talent to excellent use in David Foenkinos and Stéphane Foenkinos’ intimate romantic comedy Delicacy (La delicatesse), which sees her as a bereaved young woman who finds new purpose in an awkward love with a co-worker (François Damiens).

Chicago – In “Delicacy,” the beguiling new film from David and Stéphane Foenkinos, there are moments that beautifully portray the strange effect that love can have on the senses. Two characters spend what appears to be a brief moment together in an office. It’s only upon leaving it that they realize hours have passed by. For fans of charming French rom-coms, this picture may have a similar effect.
The luminous smile that famously graced the face of Audrey Tautou in “Amélie” is replaced by a no less radiant expression of crestfallen heartache. Tautou plays Nathalie, a young woman who loses her great love, François (Pio Marmaï), in a traffic accident. Her stranded heart remains indifferent to the desires of men overwhelmed by her beauty, including her lecherous boss, Charlie (Bruno Todeschini). Thankfully, tragedy has caused Nathalie to favor an uncommon level of frankness, and she has no problem telling Charlie...

The word "maverick" is overused in modern film criticism, but Japanese avant-garde performance-poet-turned-director Sion Sono is one of the few film-makers to whom the term can be applied without fear of contradiction. From early experimental shorts such as I Am Sion Sono!!, through edgy international breakthrough features such as Suicide Club and Exte: Hair Extensions, to more recent releases such as Cold Fish and Guilty of Romance, Sono has conjured a baffling body of work spanning arthouse invention, Manga-inflected fantasy, violently explicit comedy and thought-provoking horror.
His 2008 magnum opus Love Exposure (the first instalment of his Hate Trilogy) is one of the most genuinely peculiar and unexpectedly indefinable movies I have ever seen – a tale of religious guilt, family feuds, young love, ancient curses, sinister cults, industrial pornography, covert cross-dressing and martial-arts-inspired "peek-a-panty" photography. At once insanely ramshackle yet obsessively focused, this head-scrambling...

Audrey Tautou has come a long way since her touching, doe-eyed international debut in Amelie. The actress is typecast in such feisty, cutesy roles that it’s hard to determine whether she’s good or just a natural charmer – a bit of both perhaps. In debut directors David Foenkinos and Stephane Foenkinos’ new romance, Delicacy, we find a more determined Tautou at play – who still commands the screen in a delightfully challenging role about life, love and death.
Nathalie (Tautou) is a beautiful, happy and successful Parisian business executive who finds herself suddenly widowed after a three-year marriage to her soul mate. Struggling to cope with her loss, she buries herself and her emotions in her work to the dismay of her friends, family and co-workers.

Actress Audrey Tautou won America's hearts when she starred in the title role of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amelie in 2001, turning her into an in-demand superstar in her native France. Even so, she mostly shied away from Hollywood, her appearance in 2006's The Da Vinci Code with Tom Hanks being a rare exception, and in fact, she's only had two of her four movies released in the States since then, making many of her fans wonder what she's been up to the last six years. She's back now, starring in David and Stéphane Foenkinos' new romantic comedy Delicacy , adapted from David's bestselling French novel "La Délicatesse," playing Nathalie, a happy and successful businesswoman whose life changes dramatically when her husband of three years suddenly dies, leaving an emptiness...

Delicacy, directed by brothers David and Stéphane Foenkinos, and based on David’s novel La delicatesse, is a film that trades in whimsy without getting bogged down in preciousness. The presence of lead actress Audrey Tautou contributes greatly to the film’s charm. She’s a winsome actress, best known for her role in Amelie, who has great comic timing and a face that can convey both sweetness and despair in the blink of an eye. Both are required in this film, a story that begins with heartbreak and ends with the rebuilding of a life....

The 17th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Unifrance Films, will open on March 1 with Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano's The Intouchables (Intouchables), "an unprecedented box-office phenomenon in France, where it shattered records to become the second most successful French film of all time." Back in November, John Lichfield and Agnès Poirier floated theories as to why in the Independent and Guardian, respectively. The festival closes on March 11 with David and Stéphane Foenkinos's Delicacy, featuring Audrey Tautou, and in between, there'll be over two dozen New York premieres, new work by André Téchiné, Benoît Jacquot and Alain Cavalier, and the Centerpiece: Pathé's newly restored version of Marcel Carné's Children of Paradise (1945). I posted a roundup in November when the restoration hit London.

Casting Directors: Billy Hopkins, Suzanne Crowley, Kerry Barden, Paul Schnee, and Stéphane Foenkinos Writer-Director: Tom McCarthy Starring: Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Gurira, Hiam Abbass The Pitch: Widower Walter Vale (Jenkins) finds his life changed when two illegal immigrants (Sleiman and Gurira) are found squatting in his New York City apartment. As casting director Kerry Barden describes it, The Visitor was a unique challenge. The easy part, according to Barden — whose credits include the television show Sex and the City and the films Boys Don't Cry, Monster's Ball, and World Trade Center — was attracting Richard Jenkins, who had never carried a feature film before, to play the lead role of Walter Vale, a Connecticut college professor sent to Manhattan to attend a conference and surprised to find that a young foreign couple, victims of a real estate scam, have taken up residence in his New York apartment. Jenkins was best...
