Regular followers are probably aware that we here are at Sound on Sight are more than a little fond of an obscure British science fiction program that celebrated an anniversary of some kind last weekend. Anniversaries are always an excellent time to reflect upon and celebrate a show’s history and the lead up to last Saturday’s “The Day of the Doctor” saw the entire Whoniverse coming together to share their thoughts on everything from their favourite episodes, most beloved eras, and of course, “their” Doctor. I just love that a top ten list can be the beginning of a good conversation or a great fight, and I find that the most heat, and some of the best light, is generated when Whovians start talking about their favourite Companions. A Companion is more than just our surrogate, they’re a gateway and guide to the series who helps us...

Kamelion
Voiced by: Gerald Flood
Doctor(s): Fifth Doctor
Tenure: 2 stories- The King’s Demons (March, 1983) and Planet of Fire (March, 1984)
Background: Kamelion is a robot introduced in the control of the Master, as part of his nefarious scheme to undermine the reign of King John. The Master had discovered Kamelion prior to this and, despite Kamelion’s limited sentience, was quickly able to overpower him mentally. The Doctor frees Kamelion, who opts to join him on the Tardis.
Family/Friends: We know almost nothing about his past and due to behind the scenes struggles with the robot, we rarely see him interacting with any of the Tardis team during his tenure.
Personality: Kamelion is practically personality-less. The producers had much larger plans for the character, but due to circumstances outside their control, they were unable to use him, so he was quickly written off the show, his personality never explored.

Like it or not, Star Wars has always been a steadying influence on sci-fi telly since its debut in 1977. You can picture the exasperated look on Graham Williams' face as he realised that he now had to compete with a big-budget blockbuster that threw more visual trickery in your face than you could shake a magic stick at. Interestingly, despite the frugal budgets available, some of the results were not half bad. The Invasion Of Time pays homage to the film convincingly in its opening moments, while the spaceship scenes of Underworld and The Invisible Enemy are very very good indeed.
And since then, there's been the merchandise (kids today now have the Star Wars figure effect with the many Doctor Who figures), sly visual references (The End Of Time bar scene) and of course, Kamelion.
It's a nice idea, but in practice, the concept of Kamelion became a bit botched.
