After directing Thor: The Dark World, filmmaker Alan Taylor moved on to Terminator Genisys. Released in 2015, it's widely considered the worst movie in the sci-fi franchise's storied history. Meant to serve as a reboot, it introduced a new timeline created when Skynet attempted to kill Sarah Connors as a child.
In the movie's big twist, we learned that Skynet had transformed Jason Clarke's John Connor into a Terminator-hybrid. Joining him in the cast were Emilia Clarke as Sarah, Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese, and Arnold Schwarzenegger as a T-800 dubbed "Pops."
Despite being heavily featured in bizarre promo photos, House of the Dragon star Matt Smith made a relatively minor appearance as the advanced T-5000 Terminator who embodies Skynet, and it sounds like shooting his scenes was a bemusing experience for the British actor.

The prequel film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it is as brilliant and bombastic as the original film. Obviously, we are talking about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to George Miller‘s 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by Miller from a screenplay by Nico Lathouris and Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is taken from Green Place of Many Mothers and tries to survive in the wasteland while trying to get back home but the war between great biker horde’s warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe makes it harder. Replacing Charlize Theron from Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role of Furiosa in the prequel film and it also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, and Nathan Jones. So,...

Think about how competitive the Emmy race is: There are so many excellent shows that deserve attention yet fail to make the nomination cut because they’re either not considered one of the frontrunners or they air on a broadcast network. That’s rough.
Now, imagine being a critically acclaimed drama on a premium network/streaming hybrid in a season where the drama race is pretty wide open. You’ve got big stars, high production values and well-known source material. Shoo-in, right?
Not if you’ve been canceled. (Cue sad trombone sound effect.) That’s the unfortunate fate of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” the HBO series executive produced by Adam McKay that continued to earn raves in Season 2 for its heightened, not-quite-accurate-but-entertainingly-close-enough take on the 1980s rise of the “Showtime”-era Los Angeles Lakers. “Winning Time” should be in the awards conversation … but wound up getting canceled in September.

Exclusive: After successfully launching the Extraction film franchise at Netflix, director Sam Hargrave has his eyes set on another potential franchise with a piece of IP that is revving its engines to get out the gate. Sources tell Deadline that Skydance and Mattel Films have closed a deal with Hargrave to direct a live-action movie based on Matchbox, Mattel’s iconic real-world die-cast toy vehicle line. David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper are penning the script.
Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce alongside Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films. The project will be shepherded by Aimee Rivera for Skydance and Elizabeth Bassin and Andrew Scannell for Mattel Films.
The iconic Matchbox brand was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

With Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes hitting theaters soon, I figured now would be as good a time as any to revisit the recent Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy and journey through Caesar’s story all over again before exploring Kingdom‘s take on the future of the world he created. The modern Planet of the Apes film are something of a pleasantly surprising enigma in popular culture.
In an age where many reboots either adhere so closely to the source material as to feel like a redundant carbon copy or stray so far as to be completely unrecognizable, the Apes trilogy manages to find that balance of maintaining the spirit of the original films while carving out an identity and a story all its own. But just how did they accomplish such a feat? Let’s find out.

The 96th Academy Awards have come and gone, and the night's victor was absolutely "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan's epic chronicling the primary developer of the atomic bomb (Cillian Murphy), which won seven Oscars during the ceremony.
It's doubly impressive since 2023 was a dang good year for movies. Surveying the Best Picture nominees, both veteran filmmakers like Martin Scorsese ("Killers of the Flower Moon") and promising new artists such as Celine Song ("Past Lives") stand in its ranks. But really, "Oppenheimer" was the achievement of the year — and yes, without any disrespect to Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie, I'd even put it ahead of "Barbie," its unofficial "Barbenheimer" double-bill picture.
The triumph of "Oppenheimer" looped back around from feeling inevitable to uncertain to ensured once again. The film opened to rapturous reception, but it was a summer release. Would something come along in the typical Oscar months of autumn to dethrone it?...

Cillian Murphy has won the Oscar for best actor for his turn as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the theoretical physicist and “father of the atomic bomb,” in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”
The admittedly “overwhelmed” actor thanked the Academy, Nolan and executive producer Emma Thomas. “It’s been the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on over the last 20 years, I owe you more than I can say,” he said.
“Thank you so much [to] every single crew member, every single cast member on ‘Oppenheimer,’ you guys carried me through. All my fellow nominees, I remain in awe of you guys. Truly.”
The actor then paused for a personal moment thanking, “My two boys who are sitting up there, I love you so much, and I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.”
Taking a turn for the serious Murphy then dedicated his moment on stage to those fighting for peace.

A catchy nickname for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer crew has emerged during awards season: the Oppenhomies. During his acceptance speech for best actor at Saturday’s SAG Awards, Cillian Murphy made sure to give credit where it’s due by revealing the specific Oppenhomie who came up with it.
“Just an Fyi on that exquisite moniker, Oppenhomies, that was actually invented by the great Olivia Thirlby,” Murphy said of the actress who plays Lilli Hornig in Nolan’s epic about American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the events surrounding the creation of the atomic bomb. “So Olivia, I think you should immediately trademark that and start merching the shit out of it because someone else will.”
Murphy then got serious by calling his peers “the greatest group of actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.” It’s a long and impressive list, too, that includes Emily Blunt,...

Veteran actor Cillian Murphy has left an indelible mark on audiences worldwide, notably through his iconic roles as the brilliant physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer. His ability to immerse himself in characters and captivate audiences with his nuanced portrayal is truly remarkable.
However, amidst his illustrious career, there exists a particular moment that stirred a deep sense of unease within the actor.

“Extraction” director Sam Hargrave has signed on to direct Paramount Pictures’ “Kill Them All,” according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
“Kill Them All” is Paramount’s adaptation of a graphic novel by Kyle Starks. Oni Press is serving as an executive producer, with Starks stepping in as an associate producer.
“Kill Them All” centers on a hard drinking, former cop who wants his job back and the world’s greatest assassin who wants revenge. They can get both if they fight their way to the top floor of a skyscraper of crime – and if they can “kill them all. It’s like a reverse “Die Hard” except they...

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
One of the problems of the award season industrial complex that takes over film discourse in the early months of the year is that it tends to reduce great films to talking points. It also encourages groupthink, even if some of the nominated films are, well, deserving of those nominations. There’s the predictable pattern of acclaim, backlash, backlash to the backlash, and then maybe a few awards and the hopes of a short memory about how the awards campaign went.
Thus, creating a top-ten is always a bit tough. It’s a mixture of subjective and objective critiques, personal preferences mixed with universally regarded favorites. With that, there’s been more than enough written about Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Holdovers, etc. that...

Was 2023 a good year for movies? The end of each moviegoing year always raises that age-old question and, as always, the ultimate answer remains squarely in the eye of the beholder. For most, that tends to come down to the most populist theatrical offerings. If the latest superhero sequels and nostalgic remakes and most highly-anticipated blockbusters failed to live up to their crowd-pleasing billing, well, at least there's always next year. But for those of us who spend entirely too much time and effort on the hunt for hidden gems beneath the surface, international cinema from the most exciting talent around the globe, and overlooked indies that didn't have millions of marketing dollars to throw around, that turns out to be the wrong question to ask in the first place.
What we should be talking about is whether we've caught up on all the undeniably great movies readily available to us,...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical thriller Oppenheimer. Based on American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, Nolan wrote the script about the titular complicated and brilliant physicist tasked with leading the Manhattan Project, the secret effort to create the atom bomb, and the moral and political struggles that followed.
Oppenheimer the man, as the film tells it, struggled with psychological issues in his youth and grew to become a peerless intellectual though not an entirely likable presence. After the war, he was a vocal opponent of nuclear armament and stripped of his security clearance during a 1954 hearing that focused on his maybe/maybe-not communist ties.
The story plays out in an unusual first-person approach, with a moral conundrum gathering in Oppenheimer’s head as he...

Last awards season, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won almost everything at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Its four victories were for actress Michelle Yeoh, supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis, supporting actor Ke Huy Quan and best ensemble cast. While the scope of the sweep surprised many, the film’s triumph in the top category was widely expected.
This year, it doesn’t appear likely that any film will match the unprecedented SAG Awards feat achieved by “Everything.” However, I do think that current Gold Derby frontrunner “Oppenheimer” will maintain its lead, and ultimately will win the guild’s prestigious best ensemble prize. Here are five reasons why.
1. It boasts a cast filled with heavyweights.
In addition to the title role portrayed by Cillian Murphy, “Oppenheimer” features a roster of highly respected industry talent. That includes previous SAG Award champions Robert Downey Jr. (TV’s “Ally McBeal”), Emily Blunt...

/Film's Ryan Scott is on the ground at Austin Film Festival, and today attended a panel centered on Max Borenstein, co-creator of the recently-canceled HBO series "Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty." The series, set in 1979-1980 and adapted from the nonfiction book "Showtime" by Jeff Pearlman, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Los Angeles NBA team and its management during 1980 (when the team was home to legends like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar).
While fans may be disappointed about the series being canceled after just two seasons, some of its subjects might feel vindicated. For example, former Lakers coach Jerry West (played by Jason Clarke in "Winning Time") threatened legal action against HBO for his portrayal. The network refused to budge or throw its creators under the bus, citing dramatic license, as "Winning Time" is a dramatization, and providing assurance that the writers had done their homework.

Like countless moviegoers around the world, I’m a major fan of Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” But like many of those who saw it, I wasn’t alone in having qualifications about the last part of the movie. For me, the first two hours of “Oppenheimer” were electrifying. I felt the kind of full-scale mind/soul immersion that’s the definition of what we look for when we go to the movies. But in the last hour, I experienced a certain falling-off quality. I was still involved, but less involved. As the film kept returning to the 1954 hearing that resulted in Oppenheimer losing his security clearance, with Oppenheimer in the hot seat being hectored by a team of interrogators led by Jason Clarke’s special counsel to the Aec, I thought, “Why are we still at this damn hearing?” I asked because I didn’t know.

Long before he made Popeye Doyle race a Brooklyn subway and Regan MacNeil’s head spin, William Friedkin began his career doing live TV. He’d move on to an episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, short documentaries, a Sonny-and-Cher joint (Good Times), theatrical adaptations (The Birthday Party, The Boys in the Band), and then an all-guts-all-glory double shot that instantly made him a New Hollywood power player. But like a lot of directors coming up in the early 1960s, his roots were with actors, words, conflict, and not much more.

Relationships are curving and crumbling in two of this week’s streaming premieres, both highly worth watching. In fact, all four movies on this list concern the breakdown of something — romance, democracy, trust. Each of them is gripping, thoughtful, and surprisingly humorous.
The contender to watch this week: “Fair Play“
One of the best-reviewed movies from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, “Fair Play” sparked a bidding war that resulted in a reported $20 million sale to Netflix. Alden Ehrenreich and “Bridgerton” breakout Phoebe Dynevor play Wall Street hedge-fund analysts whose competitive ambitions throw a wrench in their clandestine romance. The sexy, sharp-edged thriller has a propulsive script that hints at more good things to come from writer/director Chloe Domont, who has previously shepherded episodes of “Ballers,” “Billions,” and other TV series. “Fair Play” got a limited theatrical release last week and is now on Netflix.

In 1954, the unparalleled Humphrey Bogart donned the costume of navy captain Philip Queeg in the classic The Ciane Mutiny. 69 years later, William Friedkin reimagines the movie in modern times and uses the material of Herman Wouk to craft the masterful cinematic masterpiece The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. Premiering on Paramount+ and Showtime, the movie stars a fantastic ensemble cast, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Lance Reddick, Jason Clarke, and Jake Lacy, among others. News that William Friedkin’s final film, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” would be released on Showtime after premiering at the Venice Film Festival was met with widespread disappointment from cinephiles. After forging an unimpeachable Hollywood legacy that included “The Exorcist,” “The French Connection,” and “Sorcerer,” the consensus was that the late director had more than earned a theatrical release for his curtain call.
It was an understandable sentiment, as we’re all occasionally tempted to fantasize about a world where mid-budget adult dramas are a viable box office draw. But the one-two punch of a prestigious festival bow followed by Sunday night pay cable glory feels like the most authentic distribution model that this film could possibly merit. Because at its core, it’s a made-for-tv movie in every sense of the word.

Plot: A Naval officer (Jake Lacy) is on trial for mutiny. His court-appointed attorney (Jason Clarke) must prove that his captain (Kiefer Sutherland) was dangerously unbalanced and that mutiny was the only solution to protect the crew.
Review: The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is an interesting final film for the late William Friedkin. While most know him for his seventies epics, having directed at least three or four of the greatest films ever made, many don’t know that he started his career with a couple of films based on stage plays: The Birthday Party and The Boys in the Band. His most recent work, Bug and Killer Joe, were also stage adaptations (of works by Tracy Letts), but The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial is more traditionally mounted than those. This is basically a stage play put to film, with no exteriors, no music and only two sets.

There is one fundamental thing about every single Stephen King story. In able hands, all of them can be made into exciting cinema. Unfortunately, though, that is not the case with Lindsey Anderson Beer’s prequel of the 2023 horror film, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. I am not exactly a fan of the 2019 version of King’s Pet Sematary, which was a rather generic adaptation that couldn’t quite do justice to the source material. Adapted by Friedkin from Herman Wouk's play, "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial" runs the risk of being too stagey; too much like a play merely transported to the screen without anything cinematic to add. Thankfully, Friedkin knows exactly how to make the film bullet along, aided by snappy, quick-paced editing from Darrin Navarro.
