"It isn't about me... I'm just hearing their stories, they're the ones living them." Vertical has revealed their trailer for an indie film titled The Listener, a solo drama starring Tessa Thompson as the only person actually in the film. The latest work directed by Steve Buscemi, who also made the underrated Interview back in 2007. After first premiering at festivals in 2022 and playing throughout 2023 on the festival circuit, The Listener is finally set for a proper debut at the end of March this year. Beth is a crisis helpline volunteer that gets on the phone every night, fielding calls from people feeling lonely, broken, and hopeless. During tonight’s shift, the stakes rise: is this the night she will save a hurting soul - or lose one? Tessa Thompson stars as Beth; other voices heard on the phone come from actors Rebecca Hall, Derek Cecil, Margaret Cho, Blu del Barrio,...

“Surprise.”
Rather than being shouted, as people do at birthday parties, Calvin (Lewis Pullman) barely whispers the word. Instead of an excited declaration, it’s the answer to a question: What’s the most important variable to consider when trying to comprehend the origins of the universe? Calvin, having just been caught off guard by an unexpected bit of news, wonders aloud to his partner, Elizabeth (Brie Larson), if all their lab work, all their equations, all their attempts to “explain our past and predict our future,” comes down to one particularly fickle factor. “What if life is necessarily unpredictable, maybe even the very thing that makes it possible in the first place?” the star chemist and frontrunner for the Nobel Prize wonders aloud. What if, just like all the actual elements, the element of surprise is knit into the fabric of existence itself?
I know, I know — it’s a Big idea…...

Part Julia Child, part Marie Curie, with the movie-star glow of a Kim Novak, brilliant chemist Elizabeth Zott (the luminous Brie Larson) is ahead of her 1950s times. In Lessons in Chemistry, adapted for Apple TV+ from Bonnie Garmus’ bestseller, she channels her analytic genius into the kitchen when toxic sexism within a California college’s lab subjects her to humiliation from her patronizing colleagues. “You are just not smart enough,” says her smarmy boss (Derek Cecil). She’ll show him, and everyone else. When circumstances thrust her before a TV camera, where she demonstrates her culinary prowess as host of the bare-bones Supper at Six, her clinical approach — “Cooking is not fun. It is vital work” — is an unexpected hit, with everyone except the boorish station manager (Rainn Wilson as one of several too-obvious villains). Housewives are immediately enthralled, taking notes, seriously and literally, whenever Zott speaks. Her producer...

Sometimes chemistry takes a little cooking. In the trailer for Apple TV+'s upcoming series "Lessons in Chemistry" - based on the novel of the same name that became an instant bestseller in 2022 - Brie Larson stars as Elizabeth Zott, a brilliant scientist in the 1950s whose career is derailed because of her sexist colleagues. When she's fired from her lab, she takes a job as a host of a TV cooking show, which gives her a voice in the homes of women - and their husbands - everywhere. The full trailer, released on Sept. 14, also features actor Lewis Pullman, who you might recognize from "Top Gun: Maverick" (or from being Bill Pullman's son). Apple released the first preview on April 20.

A trio of powerhouse actors inhabit the lives of three powerhouse political women on Showtime’s “The First Lady.” Emmy winner Gillian Anderson plays Eleanor Roosevelt; Oscar, Emmy and Tony winner Viola Davis plays Michelle Obama; and Golden Globe winner Michelle Pfeiffer plays Betty Ford. Pfeiffer is the only one of the three main stars to not have an Emmy, though she did earn a nomination for 2017’s “The Wizard of Lies.” However, that could change once Emmy voters get a look at Pfeiffer giving a career-best performance.
Pfeiffer arguably has the most difficult job in the series as Ford might be considered the least well-known of the three first ladies. After all, Michelle Obama’s tenure in the White House only ended in the past decade and she continues to maintain a high public profile. Meanwhile, Eleanor Roosevelt, the nation’s longest serving first lady, is still revered as...

Is there a more thankless job in all of Washington, D.C. than first lady? The position is subject to an unreal amount of media scrutiny (second only to the president), requires a ridiculous number of wardrobe changes and demands the patience of a saint — all for the annual salary of… nothing.
Yet despite all outward appearances, being first lady isn’t a job. It’s a “circumstance,” says Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson) in Showtime’s “The First Lady,” an anthology drama series that explores how she, Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis) ended up in such a high-profile, influential, and often fraught circumstance.
Executive produced by Susanne Bier, who also directs all 10 episodes, “The First Lady” doesn’t move chronologically or profile each woman individually; rather, the show works to find parallels between arguably three of the most popular (and influential) first ladies ever.

As Chicago lawyer Michelle Obama becomes First Lady Michelle Obama in Showtime’s newest drama, her predecessor Laura Bush offers some words of advice and comfort. “You may think you have nothing in common with the First Ladies before you,” Laura tells her, “[but] trust me when I say we all felt that way.” Here, Laura Bush acts as both some benign voice of reason (an odd choice) and also as a mouthpiece for “The First Lady” writ large (odder), which tackles the stories of three First Ladies who share little beyond the fact of living in the White House.
There’s Michelle, played by Viola Davis with Obama’s familiar cadence (if also some very exaggerated stenciled half-moon eyebrows). In the timeline that comes closest to working is Betty Ford, embodied by an especially sharp Michelle Pfeiffer. After years of making a name for himself in New York theater, Mark Ruffalo was on the cusp of breaking in to high-profile movie roles when television came calling.
In 1999, Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson had been handed a 13-episode order from Upn for a cop drama “The Beat.” Fontana and casting director Alexa Fogel had been impressed by Ruffalo’s work on stage and recruited him to co-star in the series as the hotheaded ladies-man New York City beat cop Zane Marinelli.
Fontana and Levinson’s track record with NBC’s indelible “Homicide: Life on the Street” and HBO’s arresting “Oz” lent credibility to “The Beat.” The show promised to be envelope-pushing, if only because nobody was watching Upn anyway. The pilot was directed by Levinson. Ruffalo had more than a few shirtless scenes in the early episodes.
“Tom had seen me in plays and was a fan.

This The Outsider feature contains spoilers for the finale.
In the end, The Outsider’s slow burn appears to have been worth it. HBO’s Stephen King adaptation has always been a good, well-crafted show. But few would argue that its nine episodes leading up to this finale have been chock full of adrenaline-pounding moments
That all changes in this final hour. “Must/Can’t” is the thrilling and kinetic finale that a story so patient and beautifully-made deserves. Ralph Anderson, Holly Gibney, and all their allies finally come face-to-face with the entity known as El Coco. Now let’s break down exactly what happened.

This The Outsider review contains spoilers.
The Outsider Episode 4
It seems as if every procedural type program has a scene in which someone does some Internet sleuthing, usually through some ridiculously named program like Searchalot or Doctor Sleuth. These scenes, by and large, are never interesting. Everyone searches online for things a dozen times a day or more, it's something that's more fun to do than watch. Making that remotely interesting is one of the most difficult tasks for any director, and yet as Holly sits in the tub, searching El Coco and various other old-world bogeymen, it's not boring: it’s riveting.
The camera watches Holly, transfixed, as she clicks through an impressive array of folk art monsters with wide, absorbing eyes; it's a greatest hits of grandmothers’ nightmares.

HBO premiered The Outsider on January 12 and it serves another helping of Stephen King fare translated to TV. In it, Cynthia Erivo plays private investigator Holly Gibney who uses her uncanny abilities to help police detective Ralph Anderson investigate a gruesome murder of a local boy that has a mysterious force surrounding the case. During HBO session at TCA, Erivo joined the drama’s executive producer/director/star Jason Bateman and executive producer/writer Richard Price via satellite from Tokyo to talk about the role, but she also addressed King’s latest comments about diversity in Hollywood.
Erivo was the only person of color nominated for an Oscar in the acting categories. After the Oscar nominations were announced on Monday, King took to Twitter to comment on the lack of diversity in the categories.

Cynthia Erivo has responded to the recent BAFTA nominations, which yielded entirely white nominees in all the major acting categories.
At the red carpet premiere for her new HBO show “The Outsider,” Erivo started off by saying how disappointed she was by the lack of diversity in the BAFTA noms, which snubbed her for her performance in the critically acclaimed feature “Harriet.”
“It’s disappointing to see that we’ve got to this point in time and we’ve had such wonderful advancement in inclusion and diversity, and the films this year were beautiful, such wonderful stories told, and to not have that represented in an awards show like the BAFTAs is just disappointing really,” Erivo said.
After the noms were released, Variety reported exclusively that Erivo had been asked to perform at the show by the British Academy, even after she didn’t receive a nomination. Erivo turned down the offer.

Michael Kelly is on his fourth Emmy nomination for playing Doug Stamper, the former chief of staff for President Frank Underwood on “House of Cards.” He contends for Best Drama Supporting Actor for the sixth and final season of the flagship original series from Netflix. But the show almost didn’t get a proper sendoff at all after the Kevin Spacey scandal threatened to halt production. With the lead actor fired, Frank was killed off the show, and in this final season Doug tried to take down the new president, Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). Kelly has submitted the series finale, “Chapter 73,” to Emmy voters for consideration.
The episode opens with Doug staring up at the camera asking what Frank would do. Later he addresses the press at the White House, angrily saying that Frank thought Claire was unfit to be president. Then Doug sits with a reporter, revealing the contents of Frank’s audio diary,...

“The Tomorrow Man” sounds like a 1970s sci-fi film about a guy who predicts the future, but Noble Jones’ feature debut is kind of exactly the opposite, the story a guy whose fixation on the future keeps him from fully experiencing the present.
It’s a mostly thoughtful character study that falters only by failing to scrutinize fully the central character’s toxic, paranoid worldview. Nevertheless, the film makes some astute observations about the coping mechanisms we use to protect ourselves from the world, with Jones eliciting solid performances from John Lithgow and Blythe Danner as two troubled senior citizens embarking on a tenuous courtship.
Lithgow plays Ed, a lonely forced retiree who fills his days preparing for a sociopolitical apocalypse both physically (filling a hidden panic room with canned goods and gasoline) and philosophically, presiding over dark-web chatrooms with ominous declarations. Desperate for real-world interaction after exhausting even his son Brian with endless,...

"These are interesting times we're living in. All you have to do is learn to connect the dots, and get ready." Bleecker Street Media has debuted the first official trailer for indie dramedy The Tomorrow Man, which first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This heartfelt, awkward romance is about a kooky elderly "doomsday prepper" man named Ed, and a humble "hoarder" woman named Ronnie who he meets and falls in love with. John Lithgow stars, with Blythe Danner, and a cast including Derek Cecil, Katie Aselton, Sophie Thatcher, and Eve Harlow. I caught this at Sundance earlier this year (read the review), and it has an awkward charm to it, that sinks in as it plays out. It's a nice little film - worth a watch. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Noble Jones' The Tomorrow Man, direct from YouTube: Ed Hemsler (John...

There’s a sly mood of imminent surprise to music-video director Noble Jones’ narrative feature debut “The Tomorrow Man.” John Lithgow and Blythe Danner play somewhat eccentric older small-town denizens drawn together, though each has a secret life that could be a deal-breaker.
Once we suss what those secrets are, it becomes clear that this is really just a cute autumnal romance cloaked in a little mystery that only goes so deep. If the ultimate effect is a little more slight than one might’ve hoped, Jones and his appealing cast nonetheless sustain a low-key charm even after the enigmatic initial promise burns off like morning fog. Prospects will be modest for Bleecker Street’s pre-Sundance pickup, which is slotted for a May 17 theatrical release.

A series that was built around the chemistry between two actors — and that had been building toward a climactic showdown — is suddenly a solo act. And while the sixth and final season of “House of Cards” is as mixed a bag as the thrilling but uneven Netflix drama has yet produced, the good news is that Robin Wright is up to the task of anchoring the show.
After all, since the earliest episodes, Wright has been the not-so-secret weapon of “House of Cards,” playing a character whose astringent refusal to yield to emotion balanced the more ornate performance of Kevin Spacey as her ambitious but weaker-willed husband. It was a well-tuned duet in which she did all the calibration, constructing a careful performance around his Shakespearean floridity.
With Spacey now fired from the show due to allegations of past sexual misconduct, Wright is on her own. And the spotlight suits her.

Netflix has released a new full trailer for House of Cards Season 6 and it’s the best trailer that has been released so far. It offers us our best look at the final chapter in the series and it’s made very clear that Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) is a woman to be feared.
After her husband Frank Underwood dies, she becomes the first women President of the United States of America and she’s not going to allow herself to be controlled by anyone.
The trailer also gives us a much better look at Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear in the roles of Annette Shepherd and Bill Shepherd. They are “a sister and brother who inherited Shepherd Unlimited, a leading industrial conglomerate whose family foundations exert a powerful behind-the-scenes force in the American political landscape. The two share a vision for the future of America, as well as a complicated past with the Underwoods.

“Each one of us has to defend our destiny. The first female President of the United States is not going to keep her mouth shut,” says a determined Robin Wright’s Potus. Netfix has dropped the official trailer for the sixth and final season of House of Cards.
The latest look reveals a very independent Claire Underwood (Wright), who’s clearly ready to forge her own path. “I’m not going to be told what to do anymore, Doug. Not be you, or any man, ever again,” Claire says to Michael Kelly’s Doug Stamper.
For the final season, Wright is joined by newcomers Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear as siblings with ties to the Underwoods, along with Cody Fern, the first without Kevin Spacey, alongside returning Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott and Boris McGiver.

‘My first 100 days as president have been difficult. I lost my husband. We were about to celebrate 30 years together. Netflix has released a new teaser trailer for House of Cards Season 6 and it reveals the fate of Kevin Spacey's Frank Underwood. As expected, they decided to kill him off. It makes sense because that's what it would take to get Frank Underwood to give up his power.
We don't know exactly how he died, but we'll find out when the series returns in November. One thing is for sure, Robin Wright's Claire isn't showing much remorse as she delivers a chilling speech in front of his grave.
House of Cards season 6 also stars Michael Kelly, Diane Lane, Greg Kinnear, Jayne Atkinson, Patricia Clarkson, Cody Fern, Constance Zimmer, Derek Cecil, Campbell Scott and Boris McGiver. It premieres on November 2, 2018 on Netflix.

Netflix will put a bow on “House of Cards” when it premieres the sixth and final season in November, but it nearly didn’t happen in the wake of sexual assault accusations against its star Kevin Spacey, according to Robin Wright.
During an interview with Net-a-Porter, Wright said that the political drama was “very, very close” to getting canceled by Netflix. “Because of the climate at that time. The air was thick, you know. Harvey Weinstein… People were [saying], ‘We have to shut everything down or otherwise it will look like we are glorifying and honoring this thing that’s dirty.'”
Spacey was fired from the Netflix series and written out of the show’s upcoming final season.
