Many of the most important queer films in cinema history share a birthplace: the Sundance Film Festival. Organized by the Sundance Institute, the legendary annual fest in Park City, Utah, has boasted international and U.S. premiere titles as varied as the groundbreaking New York ballroom documentary Paris Is Burning in 1991, Donna Deitch’s 1985 lesbian road drama Desert Hearts or even recent masterworks like Luca Guadagnino’s 2017 adaptation of Call Me by Your Name.
The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Kim Yutani, director of programming at Sundance, about some of the most important Lgbtqia+ films to debut there.
“Seeing the films that Sundance has programmed over the years, especially around the early 1990s with the New Queer Wave, that was what attracted me to Sundance,” says Yutani, who’s been working with the festival for 17 years, and has also worked in various positions within the film industry, like as Gregg Araki...

Ryan Cassidy, the son of actors Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy and the brother of singer/actor David Cassidy and actor Patrick Cassidy, has written a children’s book about being babysat by an Oscar-winning actor. Growing up in a family of Hollywood stars, Ryan certainly had a memorable childhood, including being looked after one afternoon by the iconic actor James Cagney, who died in 1986. That day has inspired Ryan’s new children’s book, James Cagney Was My Babysitter, which includes a foreword and afterword from Jones. “I’m very fortunate to have had a wonderful career in show business and to have worked with some brilliant actors,” Jones writes in the foreword, according to People. “Among the many movies and television shows I was privileged to do, the opportunity to work with the legendary James Cagney was a very special moment for me.” Ryan Cassidy Facebook Speaking to...

Here’s when and where you can stream more than 20 new holiday movies and specials this year, including at least three new versions of “A Christmas Carol:” the Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell musical “Spirited;” Netflix’s animated “Scrooge” with the voices of Luke Evans and Olivia Colman; and “A New Diva’s Christmas Carol,” where the mean old miser is now a faded music star who’s now a mean old judge on a reality TV show.
And — “Mean Girls” alert — Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert and Jonathan Bennett each have a holiday movie out this year. And don’t forget “Hannukah on Rye,” about two deli owners who get matched up for the holidays, featuring singer Lisa Loeb.
If you don’t have the Hallmark channel, which is Christmas movie central, their new movies will be available on-demand on Peacock for 72 hours after their network premiere and on subsequent re-airings.

By the early ‘80s, Melissa Sue Anderson was ready to get some dirt under Mary Ingall’s fingernails, and shed her squeaky clean image. Late in ’81 she would entertain horror audiences with her big screen turn in Happy Birthday to Me, but earlier that same year she stayed closer to home on the tube playing a big bad teenage witch in Midnight Offerings – a role which I’m sure Pa Ingalls would not approve of.
The telemovie premiered Friday, February 27th, 1981 on ABC. It’s neighbor CBS had the kings of Friday night, Dukes of Hazzard and Dallas going on, while poor old NBC had Nero Wolfe followed by that party animal David Brinkley. 'Yesterday' movie: Leleti Khumalo and Lihle Mvelase. 'Yesterday' movie review: Fantastic central performance in South African AIDS drama To date, nowhere has the AIDS pandemic been felt more strongly than in Sub-Saharan Africa, home to approximately 10 percent of the world's population and two-thirds of the planet's 30-35 million AIDS cases. In the past thirty years, it is estimated that more than 20 million Sub-Saharan Africans have died from complications of the disease.* Even today, drug cocktails that are relatively accessible in other parts of the globe are still beyond the means of the vast majority of Africans. Writer-director Darrell Roodt's South African drama Yesterday is set in this catastrophic scenario. The film depicts the effects of AIDS in the life of a young Zulu woman who contracts HIV from her husband. Although Roodt's narrative maintains its focus on the plight of one particular individual, the (for non-Zulus) quirkily named Yesterday represents millions of other women,...

You can hardly blame the powers that be for wanting to capitalize on the success of an unusually popular movie by creating a television spin-off. Undoubtedly they will expect it to be met with open arms and, more importantly, open wallets. They try to say that it will tie up loose ends from the original film and expand upon the story lines. The problem is, you see, that for the most part films don’t lend themselves to the episodic nature of television. They are very much self-contained units that function perfectly well on their own, and stretching them out is often detrimental.
Then consider the fact that film stars, until very recently, didn’t do television, and therefore would be unlikely to reprise their role. It’s a recipe for disaster, and unsurprisingly a lot of these TV spin-offs were met with derision and swift cancellation,...

Dear gays born after 1990: Longtime Companion is on Netflix Instant, so please click there now, watch this seminal 1989 mainstream film for the first time, and wonder why it wasn't taught to you in high school. Seriously, you probably watched Glory and Schindler's List (which is fiiiiine), but this week's Best Movie Ever? candidate Longtime Companion is a pretty great tool for teaching you about other historical essentials such as:
1) The first decade of the AIDS crisis, which could be missing from your social studies textbook
2) Credible camaraderie among Lgbt characters on film
3) The flyness of oversized khakis, the hotness of Campbell Scott and Dermot Mulroney, and the scorching, red-hot melodrama of '80s soap operas
World AIDS Day is on December 1st. In time for that, let's review five reasons this rewatchable, but devastating film about how a group of gay friends are changed by the AIDS epidemic must be seen today.

When we were kids, starting on the day after Thanksgiving we began to eagerly anticipate the arrival of the Sears Wish Book. The 500+ page catalog was our bible when it came time to put in our order with the big man in the North Pole.
And when we say order, we mean a big honkin' order. We did not simply make a brief request for one or two toys from Santa. We would sit with the Sears catalog and carefully comb through it page by page, over and over. Our lists were detailed itemizations including page, price, size, color and sometimes quantity. After all you can never have too many refills for your pot holder weaving machine or enough packets of frosting for your Easy Bake Oven cakes.
We are happy to say we have outgrown our more-than-slightly commercialized view of the holiday season. And...

The trailer for my most-anticipated film was released earlier this week and we gave you 90 gorgeous wallpapers from it. Today, Fox Searchlight has launched the Facebook page and the official site for Terrrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life.
Over on that official site, you can listen to the first piece from Alexandre Desplat‘s score. Desplat has most recently provided the score for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, The King’s Speech, Tamara Drewe, and The Ghost Writer all this year. I’ve extracted an mp3 from the official site and you can listen to the beautiful thing below or download it here (right-click and save as).
Update: We got word that the music used in the trailer and official site actually comes from Patrick Cassidy‘s Famine Remembrance, and is titled Funeral March. You can find out more on Amazon and listen below.

ABC Family has opted to pass on ordering a second season of its freshman sitcom, Ruby & the Rockits.
In Ruby & the Rockits, former teen icon Patrick Gallagher (Patrick Cassidy) has been living quietly with his wife (Katie A. Keane) and their two sons, teenage Jordan (Austin Butler) and sarcastic preteen Ben (Kurt Doss).
Things change when Patrick's former band-mate brother, David (David Cassidy), shows up with David's previously unknown teenage daughter, Ruby (Alexa Vega). David doesn't want to give up his show-biz life and leans on his brother to help raise his daughter, who's a rising star on her own.
Ruby And The Rockits debuted on July 21st to 1.6 million viewers and 654,000 in the 18-49 demographic, making it the second best sitcom launch in the network's history. It even built out of the audience of fellow freshman comedy 10 Things I Hate About You.

It's a mini-"Partridge Family" reunion when Shirley Jones once again plays real-life stepson David Cassidy's TV mom when she guest stars on "Ruby and the Rockits." In the "50 Ways to Heave Your Mother" episode of the ABC Family show, Shirley plays David and Patrick Cassidy's mother -- Patrick is her real-life son -- when she visits the boys and meets David's long-lost daughter for the first time. She insists that Ruby (Alexa Vega) call her Mrs. Gallagher instead of Grandma -- even as Ruby valiantly tries to win her affections. "Ruby and the Rockits" is a family affair as Shaun Cassidy serves as exec producer and brother Ryan is the set decorator. "50 Ways to Heave Your Mother" airs Tuesday, September 15 at 8:30 p.m. on ABC Family.
