Sugar Ending Explained: Does Sugar Go Back to His Home Planet? ( Photo Credit – Apple TV )
Apple TV’s sci-fi detective thriller Sugar wrapped up its first season with another twist, which was difficult to anticipate. However, nothing can match the major twist of the show that revealed John Sugar to be an alien, residing on earth with other fellow aliens, to study the behavior of human beings. Despite not being as shocking as this twist, the ending is pretty tight and leaves room for unanswered questions that hint at the possibility of a second season.
What Happens in Sugar?
Sugar follows the journey of its main character, John Sugar, a Pi who is also obsessed with movies. He kind of thinks of himself as a movie star and several shots of the show cut to different hollywood noir and detective movies. We learn that Sugar finds people who cannot or...

It had been a minute since Anna Gunn felt the anticipation of an intriguing script hitting her inbox. Understandably, the incomparable writing she received for a combined decade on Deadwood and Breaking Bad set a high bar. But then the Colin Farrell-led Apple TV+ series Sugar came along.
Created by Mark Protosevich and executive produced by Audrey Chon/Simon Kinberg, the neo-noir show ended up being one of a couple recent Breaking Bad reunions for Gunn. Co-heads of Apple TV+ programming, Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg, served as presidents at Sony Pictures Television when Vince Gilligan walked through their doors with his Breaking Bad pilot script, and on top of having a hand in Gunn joining Sugar, the two executives have been busy recruiting their former Breaking Bad collaborators to their acclaimed streamer, including Gilligan and his still-untitled upcoming series; Jonathan Banks and director-ep Michelle MacLaren for Constellation...

Colin Farrell in ‘Sugar’ episode 2 (Photo Credit: Apple TV+)
As Apple TV+’s Sugar episode two opens, John Sugar (Colin Farrell) admits his investigation into Olivia Siegel’s disappearance got off to a rocky start. John is taking a swim in the hotel’s pool while collecting his thoughts and working through what he’s learned about Olivia. He stares at the moon (something we’ve noticed he frequently does) while confessing he knows he’s good at what he does.
A short while later, he meets with Bernie Siegel (Dennis Boutsikaris), Olivia’s dad. Bernie’s a movie producer, just like his father (John’s current employer), but definitely not in his father’s class. Bernie cuts to the chase and reveals he’s sure Olivia will return on her own at some point, ready for rehab again. Bernie also reveals he’s aware John met with Melanie Matthews,...

Before his mid-career upswing — starting either with “The Lobster” or “The Beguiled” and running through recent scorchers like “After Yang” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” — it’s worth remembering that Colin Farrell used to make bad movies, too. Now, his hot streak includes an Oscar nomination and a successful blockbuster franchise (soon with its own TV spinoff), but back then, for every “New World” and “In Bruges,” there was a “London Boulevard” and “Dead Man Down.” “Disappointing” may be a better descriptor of his star-forming era, with the “Total Recall” and “Fright Night” reboots, as well as earlier flops like “Alexander,” “The Recruit,” and “S.W.A.T.” But no matter how you remember them (if you remember them), Farrell’s early career offered uncertain quality. Of course, TV fans needn’t be reminded that Farrell’s charming Irish talents have gone to waste in projects unworthy of his efforts. We shan’t...

Review: Detective stories and noir films are iconic genres in film and literature. Who doesn’t love a grizzled private eye who saves the girl and beds the femme fatale? From The Maltese Falcon to Chinatown, detectives have a long and storied history on screen. With the new series Sugar, Colin Farrell adds another great character to the list. A suave, calm, and skilled investigator, John Sugar is an idealized hero straight off the silver screen. And, like any number of great cinematic detectives, he has a weakness. Private Investigator John Sugar (Colin Farrell) wears a black suit for all occasions and never drives anything but his classic Corvette. He’s unflappably calm, prefers to listen rather than talk, and absolutely doesn’t know how to let a case go once he’s started working on it—especially if it involves a missing woman. Watching Sugar, it’s as if one of Humphrey Bogart or Glenn Ford’s hardboiled gumshoes stepped straight out of their smoky, monochrome realm and into our full-color world of smartphones and social media.
Though Sugar is set in modern-day L.A., the series finds him tasked with a case suited to his anachronistic sensibilities. In fact, it’s one cribbed straight from The Big Sleep: A rich, reclusive movie producer, Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell), hires Sugar to track down his wild-child granddaughter, Olivia (Sydney Chandler). Everything old is new again when it comes to TV detective shows. First, Natasha Lyonne did her best Columbo on Peacock’s quirky Poker Face, then Clive Owen resurrected iconic gumshoe Sam Spade on AMC’s sleek Monsieur Spade. Now Colin Farrell is taking a shot at the old-school private eye game with Apple TV+’s Sugar — and what do you know, this one works, too. A stylishly shot throwback to classic film noir with lean and mean storytelling and smart and lively dialogue, Sugar (premiering Friday, Apr. 5; I’ve seen four of the eight episodes) doesn’t attempt to reinvent the wheel…...

Writer/Director duo Austin and Meredith Bragg make their feature-film debut with this biopic of Roger Sharpe, a writer and game designer known for helping to end New York City’s 36-year ban on pinball. The film opens with an interview being conducted with Sharpe (Dennis Boutsikaris) as he’s asked about that fateful day, although he insists that important context must be given by first delving into the history.
Sharpe sets the scene while requesting they play Imagine, although the trip down memory lane is halted when the interviewer says John Lennon’s song is a little slow and expensive. Substituted is a less recognisable piece of music, while the story transitions into Sharpe narrating about his younger self (Mike Faist), recently divorced and trying to work as a writer. Plot: An unsettled writer with a fantastic mustache, Roger Sharpe, finds solace and confidence in the one thing he has mastered: pinball. When a police raid destroys the only machines he can find in 1970s New York City, he learns the game is illegal. Roger reluctantly joins forces with the Music and Amusement Association to overturn the ban while falling in love with Ellen, an artist and single mother. Roger’s path to save pinball ultimately rescues him. He and Ellen overcome their pasts and take a shot at love. Roger learns what it means to take a chance—and that commitment is the most rewarding gamble of all.
Review: If you are a longtime reader of this website, you may notice we tend to post about pinball machines. Our founder, JoBlo himself, is a huge fan of the game and even served as a producer on a documentary about them called Arcade Dreams.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 6, Episode 7, “Plan and Execution.”]
If there’s a dominant streak in this first half of the “Better Call Saul” farewell season, it’s the idea of surveillance. Aside from the fact that we’re all (in our own weird way) complicit in spying on the most vulnerable moments of these characters’ lives, they’re already doing a pretty good job of doing it to each other: guys stationed in squad cars tucked just out of view, massive battle stations’ worth of security cameras trained on every inch of the Fortress of Fringitude, and — as we see in this midseason finale — Lalo Salamanca (Tony Dalton) peeping through a pair of binoculars at the massive laundry operation he’s convinced is the disguise we know it to be.
They’re all waiting for a moment of weakness, one tiny slip-up to give them just enough of an advantage to pounce.

"The way I've always been doing things just doesn't work now." Relativity Media has debuted a trailer for an indie film titled Violet, which first premiered at the 2021 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Violet marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Justine Bateman, who has been working in Hollywood and tells many of her own stories in this film. It is a brutal look at life in the industry, and how shitty so many people can be. But it's also a brutal look at how shitty we can be to ourselves. Olivia Munn stars as Violet, who realizes her entire life is built on fear-based decisions, and must do things differently to become her true self. The film features Justin Theroux as "the voice" inside of her head, telling her how awful she is. There's also on-screen text for three layers showing how she's overwhelmed with anxiety all the time.

Exclusive: Following the movie’s TIFF premiere, Relativity Media will open Justine Bateman’s feature directorial debut Violet on Oct. 29 in NY and LA with an expansion to follow on Nov. 5.
The pic will also hit in home demand on Nov. 9.
Relativity, as we first told you, picked up Violet after its world premiere at SXSW.
The pic follows Violet Calder (Olivia Munn) as she realizes that she can no longer ignore the daily barrage of self-criticisms (voiced by Justin Theroux) that clouds her life. These self-criticism cause her to make fear-based decisions and hold her back from the kind of professional, personal, and romantic life she knows she wants. Unsure how to live a life free of that self-doubt, like her childhood friend Red (Luke Bracey), Violet realizes she has no choice but to travel the road that is more frightening to her than the fear that holds her back: Doing everything differently.

Justin Theroux is the bad voice inside of Olivia Munn’s head in Justine Bateman’s directorial debut “Violet,” and the filmmaker said there were a lot of logistics that went into making those scenes go seamlessly.
In “Violet,” Munn plays an executive at a production company in Hollywood and has a negative voice inside her head, prompting her to realize that her life is built on fear-based decisions.
“I had only written half of what the voice ends up saying, half to two-thirds, when we shot so we were reading those off camera, we had somebody doing that,” Bateman told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven during a virtual interview at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. “In the edit, I knew I wanted the voice saying more things so I was able to write more lines and go to Justin and say, ‘Hey I’m coming at you in New York...
