“The Righteous Gemstones” has been renewed for Season 3 at HBO.
The news comes as the comedy series is still airing its second season, which is due to air its finale on Feb. 27 on the premium cabler. Season 2 kicked off on Jan. 9 with the first two episodes dropping, with new episodes airing on HBO and HBO Max weekly after that. Reports began circulating that the show had gotten an early Season 3 renewal in October 2021 after executive producer David Gordon Green said in an interview that the renewal was happening, but HBO has not officially commented until now.
The show tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work. Season 2 finds the Gemstone family threatened by outsiders from both the past and present who wish to destroy their empire.

“The Wrong Missy” is a rom-com, but it’s really a ’90s Jim Carrey movie merged with one of those slob-goes-on-a-corporate-retreat comedies that has starred everyone from Bill Murray to Adam Sandler to Will Ferrell. Here’s what’s new about it: The hypomanic Jim Carrey figure is a woman — Missy, played by the wild-card comedian Lauren Lapkus, who in this movie is like a grenade of happy insanity tossed into the middle of every scene. Lapkus, who looks like a hellion version of Illeana Douglas, is best known for playing Susan Fischer on “Orange Is the New Black” and for one arc on “The Big Bang Theory” (she was also quite good in Zach Galifianakis’s “Between the Ferns”), and in “The Wrong Missy” she’s an antically wired, rubber-faced, this-is-your-brain-on-media satirist-anarchist.

Tyler Spindel’s “The Wrong Missy” isn’t without a few charms, as it builds its meandering story around an ever-growing coterie of misunderstandings and the inevitable tragedy they inspire (comedy!). But . A gross-out comedy masquerading only in the flimsiest sense as a romance, “The Wrong Missy” still knows its way around genre convention, but Spindel and company seem compelled to use those expectations to tee up cruel gags that do little to advance the film’s plot or central romance.
It’s a mix-up from the start — “a blind date blunder!” one character laughs — when well-meaning Tim (David Spade) mistakenly believes he’s saving his blind date from a ‘roid-chomping muscleman who can’t take a hint. Compared to The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over is a Criterion-bound masterpiece. Then again, compare anything to The Ridiculous 6 and I’m sure you’d mistake it for the second coming of Kubrick, so let’s be honest about The Do-Over – it’s not Adam Sandler’s worst, but that bar couldn’t sink any lower. Netflix has given the once-legendary comedian carte blanche, as Sandler tries desperately to win back his fanbase’s waning support – a gamble CEO Reed Hastings has to be questioning by now. The Do-Over is more survivable than expected, but Sandler just seems to be begging for help at this point, hoping social justice and David Spade can save him from yet another critically-ignored misfire.
In this identity-swapping “thriller,” Max (Adam Sandler) and Charlie (David Spade) decide to trade their shitty lives with two dead corpses who won’t be missed. Of course, Max doesn...

Negative reviews have a weird effect on some people. It's the second in Sandler's four-picture deal with Netflix, which was viewed as a coup for the streaming service when it first moved into producing its own content, but thus far, they probably haven't been as expected. After last year's Western spoof The Ridiculous 6,...

Thank God the Lucas Bros. (a.k.a. Keith and Kenny Lucas) didn't follow through with law school. If they did, we probably wouldn't have played witness to the pop-culture treasure trove that is the animated show Lucas Bros. Moving Co. or their cannabis-fueled antics in 22 Jump Street. And we probably wouldn't — actually, never mind, they probably would still have the wherewithal to come up with a satiric show about community organizers in Brooklyn. But before that rolls out, the twins are joining forces with fellow comedians-in-arms Jermaine Fowler, Kevin Barnett, Jennifer Bartels, Lil Rel Howery, and Josh Rabinowitz (pictured above) to unspool a sketch-comedy series on truTV. [1] As with film, not every television project that enters development actually makes it to the screen -- but sighing over what could've been is a task for some other day. Today, our curiosity is piqued by some of the more interesting-sounding series in the works, including shows by Transformers helmer Michael Bay (how's he gonna fit all those explosions on a tiny screen?) and Dark Knight writer David Goyer. I don't know that I'd actually want to follow all of these series if they actually made it to air, but I'll be keeping an eye on them to see how they pan out. After the jump: Starz orders Da Vinci's Demons, by Dark Knight writer David Goyer Michael Bay will exec produce Outsiders for The CW NBC buys a new comedy by Scrubs writer Tim Hobert and the guy who played intern Lonnie on same Showtime buys a new comedy from the Farrelly Bros.

The team behind the 2008 Fox comedy Unhitched, writers Chris Pappas, Mike Bernier and Kevin Barnett and directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly, is reuniting for a new comedy project in development at Showtime. The 5 are executive producing the project, a sometimes cynical, raunchy, Farrelly-style comedy revolving around a guy who is betrayed by his wife after years of marriage and he finds himself at the crossroads of a midlife crisis. CAA-repped Pappas, Bernier and Barnett are writing, with Peter Farrelly attached to direct. Also exec producing are Jason Felts, Justin Berfield and Michael Forman of Virgin Produced along with Darryl Taja, who packaged the project and manages the writers. Additionally, Pappas and Bernier are writing a multi-camera comedy for ABC starring music star Romeo Santos and based on his life growing up in a traditional Dominican-American family. Pappas and Bernier are executive producing with Will Smith and James Lassiter of Overbrook Entertainment.

Chicago – I So wanted “Hall Pass” to be good. Not only do we need the men who made “There’s Something About Mary” and “Kingpin” back in prime form but the timing of their return seems perfect — who better to ride the wave of R-rated comedies inspired by the success of “The Hangover”? Sadly, “Hall Pass” is a hit-and-miss affair that falls too often on the wrong side of that comedy corridor. It’s a reasonable rental on a rainy night but not the return to form fans of the Farrelly brother’s greats were hoping for.

Could "Hall Pass" be the nail in the coffin for the Farrelly brothers' careers? A long time ago these guys used to be able to reach into the bottom of the barrel and pull out a real gag--now they just settle for cheap shocks. Their script, which they wrote with Pete Jones (anyone remembers "Stolen Summer," the film which he directed and which was an entry in the Ben Affleck- and Matt Damon-created Project Greenlight contest?) and Kevin Barnett, is a good idea that, put in more capable hands could have been a much better movie. Instead, it’s predictable and filled with clichés, dumb people, and lowest common denominator sight gags.

Yup, we're back! After a much needed hiatus, Cinema Showdown has returned. Why the leave of abscense? Well, it's simple; February sucked, and there's was nothing to watch. But the next couple weeks look awesome, with tons of quality choices hitting the cineplex. But first, let's get rid of February, shall we?

Yup, we're back! After a much needed hiatus, Cinema Showdown has returned. Why the leave of abscense? Well, it's simple; February sucked, and there's was nothing to watch. But the next couple weeks look awesome, with tons of quality choices hitting the cineplex. But first, let's get rid of February, shall we?

I’m gonna lay it all out for you: If you watched the trailer for Hall Pass and thought “I bet I could tell you, beat by beat, exactly how that movie’s plot is going to go”, then you are likely correct in your assumptions. Save for a some supporting cameos and a few typically-scatological set pieces, the Farrelly brothers’ latest film feels exactly like the marriages it seeks to satirize: good-natured and comfortable, but ultimately tepid and crushingly predictable.
Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis star as Rick and Fred, a pair of married almost-40’s who can’t help but check out other women, even when their (uncommonly hot) wives are around. Though to give the two equal billing is unfair. Wilson is definitely the lead in this movie – the bland, unmotivated lead – while Sudeikis is unquestionably his stock horny sidekick. Early in the movie Wilson’s wife,...

All right, let’s take a trip to cinema suburbia. A place full of immaculate lawns, beautifully furnished homes, and comfortable, complacent couples. After several years of marriage, the husbands are getting that itch. Everywhere they look these guys face temptation. The wives are slightly annoyed and a bit amused. But what happens when the king brothers of wild, raunchy movie comedies, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, take aim at this familiar film setting. You get Hall Pass based on the screenplay they co-wrote with Pete Jones and Kevin Barnett. Along with the carpools and play dates expect lots of confusion, slapstick, and humiliation.
The film focuses on two couples. We first meet Rick ( Owen Wilson ) and Maggie ( Jenna Fisher ) as they are preparing to leave there three kids with the sitter and attend a dinner honoring her friend, media psychologist Dr. Lucy ( Joy Behar ). There they meet up with their...

Anyone out there who would dismiss “Hall Pass” outright — assuming it’s a formulaic buddy movie during which a pair of middle-aged horndogs go cruising for chicks, only to realize in the end that home is truly where the heart is — is in for a huge surprise.
Nah, just kidding.
“Hall Pass” is every pop-culture cliché you’d imagine it might be and then some.
There are dick jokes and boob jokes and cunnilingus jokes and masturbation jokes. There are shit jokes and beer jokes and pot jokes and Chinese massage jokes. There are black penis jokes and Irish penis jokes — even a premature ejaculating penis joke. There’s full-frontal nudity and partial nudity and even some gratuitous nudity.

Jenna Fischer, Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis and Christina Applegate in Hall Pass
This weekend sees the release of Hall Pass, the latest movie from the Farrelly brothers (There’s Something About Mary, Dumb & Dumber, Stuck On You). We’ll have our review of the film up soon, but in the meantime director/writer Bobby Farrelly and co-writer Kevin Barnett sat down for a roundtable interview here in Toronto, and Dork Shelf’s own Ian MacIntyre was invited to join in. Bobby and Kevin discussed Hall Pass, how comedy has changed, marriage, and crazy Three Stooges casting rumors.
Questions marked with “Q” are from other journalists who were present at the roundtable.
Bobby Farrelly: Well guys, what have I got to say? (Motions To Hotel Board Room)
Q: This is all looking rather more corporate than I would have thought for the guys that did “Something About Mary”…
Farrelly: Uh yeah.

Interview With Bobby Farrelly And Kevin Barnett On Hall Pass
Along with his brother Peter, Bobby Farrelly is responsible for some great comedies, most of which you've surely seen. There's Something About Mary, Me, Myself And Irene, Kingpin, Shallow Hal, and Dumb And Dumber, are a just a couple of the films for which Mr. Farrelly has been responsible for. The brothers have a unique comedic style, providing raunchy comedy but keeping their films ultimately heartfelt. Their newest film, Hall Pass, is hitting theatres on February 25th. Starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis, the film revolves around two best friends who are having trouble with their marriages. In hopes of improving their relationships, their wives come up with a plan, they grant the boys a 'hall pass'. The pass grants them a one week break from marriage, one week to do whatever they want, no rules. While in Toronto to promote the film,...

The best way to sell a Farrelly Brothers film is with a red-band trailer, and so WB/New Line has dropped this red-band clip for the upcoming Hall Pass, in which Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis are married guys who can't stop thinking about the sex they're evidently not getting at home. Given a week's break from the confines of marriage, the two get into some ridiculous hijinks. This feels more like a Farrelly Brothers project than the first trailer [1] did -- that one had more of a Judd Apatow vibe. Even so, this one isn't as dirty as I expected. Have we really arrived at a point where a guy jerking off in his car as cops approach feels, well, routine? But, hey, Richard Jenkins looks like he'll be worth a few laughs, and Stephen Merchant and J.B. Smoove are on hand, which can't be bad. Here's the red-band trailer,...

Here’s the new international trailer for the upcoming commedy movie Hall Pass.
Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) are best friends who have a lot in common, including the fact that they have each been married for many years. But when the two men begin to show signs of restlessness at home, their wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) take a bold approach to revitalizing their individual marriages: granting them a “hall pass,” one week of freedom to do whatever they want…no questions asked. At first, it sounds like a dream come true for Rick and Fred. But it isn’t long before they discover that their expectations of the single life-and themselves-are completely, and hilariously, out of sync with reality.
Co-stars J.B. Smoove, Alexandra Daddario, Stephen Merchant, Nicky Whelan, Larry Joe Campbell, Tyler Hoechlin, Derek Waters, Vanessa Angel and Kristin Carey.

The first trailer and teaser poster for the Farrelly brothers' (Bobby and Peter) new movie, Hall Pass, are now online. Those wacky guys behind Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary, and The Heartbreak Kid wrote (with Kevin Barnett) and directed this new comedy about a couple of horny married guys (Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) who are granted a one week "hall pass" to cheat at will by their wives (Jenna Fisher and Christina Applegate). The problem? The wives neglected to mention that they also plan on engaging in extramarital activities during the week apart.

Will you look at that... another comedy about sex without consequences! Of course, this one is more of a middle-aged sex comedy than a rom-com, and it is directed by The Farrelly Brothers. I was kind of expecting it to be more raunchy than what the trailer lets on though. Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis (30 Rock, Saturday Night Live) play married men who are losing the spark in their relationships. Their wives (Christina Applegate and Jenna Fischer) grant them a one-week "hall pass", to chase other women... mainly because they don't think their men can get any. This definitely seems reminiscent of one of the recurring plot threads from the fourth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm (and, incidentally, J.B. Smoove makes an appearance in this movie as well). Hall Pass was originally written as a spec script by Pete Jones, and then reworked by The Farrelly Brothers and Kevin Barnett...
