This story about Phil Dunster and “Ted Lasso” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Ask “Ted Lasso” fans to name their favorite storyline of the surprisingly super-sized Season 3 and you’ll likely get a unanimous answer: the burgeoning bromance between Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster). The relationship would have been unimaginable in Season 1, when the two alpha males openly despised each other. But the bad blood was wiped clean by Jamie’s transformation from AFC Richmond bad boy to team sweetheart.
“I made a petition that I signed 25,000 times myself and gave it to the writers every day so that they would start writing Roy and Jamie scenes, because it was sort of my raison d’etre for a while,” Dunster said, smiling. “Brett is a huge part of why people enjoy that story because you can see him fighting...

Noted director, Aditya Chopra, has always strongly felt that Broadway and Indian films are ‘two long lost lovers separated in time because of their intrinsic similarities. Both celebrate heart-warming stories and human emotions through music and dance’. Mr. Chopra has now made that a reality and merged Bollywood and Broadway by taking his much-loved film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (Ddlj) and transposing it as a musical theatre production.
In Come Fall in Love – The Ddlj Musical, Aditya Chopra takes a fresh and exciting new look at his landmark film, renewing it for a new generation and in a new medium. With an American audience in mind, he moves the action of the early scenes to America and not England as in the film.

Disney’s Frozen has become Broadway’s first long-running casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic and industrywide shutdown. The production, which opened March 22, 2018, at the St. James Theatre, announced today that it will not return when Broadway reopens — whenever that might be.
In the closure announcement, producers said the musical will not re-open “as a result of the industry-wide shutdown and resulting economic fallout.” The production’s final performance was Wednesday March 11, having played 825 performances and 26 previews.
“In the summer of 2013 when Frozen began its road to Broadway,” said Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer Disney Theatrical Productions, “two things were unimaginable: that we’d soon have five productions worldwide, and a global pandemic would so alter the world economy that running three Disney shows on Broadway would become untenable.
“The extraordinary contribution of Broadway’s original company,” he continued, “plus those who have joined more recently cannot be overstated. Frozen, like all shows,...

Nearly one year ago, on March 22, 2018, the new Broadway musical Frozen opened at New York’s historic St. James Theatre and became an instant hit. Frozen has been in the top 10 best-selling shows every week since its opening, grossing more than any new Broadway musical since Hamilton and setting four St. James Theatre house records in less than a year. Now, in celebration of the musical’s first smash year on Broadway, Disney Theatrical Productions has announced worldwide expansion plans for Frozen, with international productions planned for Australia, London and Germany.

The “Sunset Boulevard” musical is months away from staring production, but 42 percent of our readers believe that this film adaptation will finally bring Glenn Close her elusive Oscar, and her name ought to be engraved now.
“This performance could very well be a career topper for her! And if the movie is really excellent, that could finally do the trick for her,” user Jack Mahanes wrote. “And I hope it does the trick for her, because she’s an amazing actress who should have an Oscar!”
In development limbo for decades, “Sunset Boulevard” finally made some movement last week when Tony-winning choreographer Rob Ashford was tapped to direct the film, which is set to start filming in the fall. Glenn Close is ready for her Oscar Close-up. The long-gestating film adaptation of the Broadway musical version of “Sunset Boulevard” has found its Mr. DeMille to Close’s Norma Desmond: Tony winner Rob Ashford will direct the film, which is set to start production in the fall. That means Close would ideally be back in the Oscar conversation for the ceremony in 2021. So close, yet so far again. But will this finally bring Close the statuette that has eluded her seven times already?
After her shocking Best Actress loss for “The Wife” to Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) on Sunday, the overdue narrative will be even more fierce in two years’ time. If successful, “Sunset” would mark Close’s eighth nomination — she has no projects scheduled for release this year, which is just as well because you’d hate for “Sunset” to be her potential ninth bid — and surely the academy wouldn’t deny her again,...

Glenn Close is officially bringing her Tony-winning role to the big screen.
The 71-year-old actress is set to star in the movie adaptation of Sunset Boulevard, for which she won a Tony Award in 1995. The movie will be helmed by Tony-winning choreographer Rob Ashford, who is making his directorial debut.
Close originated the role in 1994 on Broadway and reprised the character during a revival in 2017. The movie will be an adaptation of the musical adaptation of the classic film first released in 1950 starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson as Nora Desmond, the iconic role Close took on for the musical.

Olivia Colman’s Best Actress win over frontrunner Glenn Close was the biggest shock at the 2019 Oscars. Close had won nearly every precursor award on the circuit, including the Golden Globe and SAG Award, and with seven nominations to her name and no wins it became a no-brainer among Oscar pundits that now was Close’s time. Alas, the legend lost to Colman and continued to assume the title of the most Oscar-nominated living performer without an Oscar win.
Fortunately, Close is getting right back to work with a long-in-the-works passion project that might just give her another chance at the Oscar: “Sunset Boulevard.” Tony-winning choreographer Rob Ashford (“Thoroughly Modern Millie”) has been announced as the director of the upcoming musical, adapted from the 1993 Andrew Lloyd Webber show. The musical itself is an adaptation of Billy Wilder’s Oscar-winning 1950 film of the same name.

The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company kicks off its inaugural, year-long residency at the Garrick Theatre in London's West End with a curious theatrical triptych — two shows built from three different pieces by two different playwrights, all outlined in one billing block in the program that covers a common cast, the direction credited to Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh, and set and costume design by Christopher Oram. Do the math and altogether they add up to one long, by turns sad, funny and nostalgic meditation on regret, familial feeling and theatricality itself. First, if not foremost, comes The Winter's

Half is a much more equal percentage than zero, no? Four women were nominated for five DGA awards in episodic television Wednesday morning, marking a giant step up from the film side of things where zero women made the cut — including "Selma" director Ava Duverney, who many expected to earn a slot. Jodie Foster earned nominations for directing episodes of both "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards," while "Homeland" dominated the drama category with two of the five nominations. Other big names to land nominations include Cary Joji Fukunaga for "True Detective," Louis C.K. for "Louie," Mike Judge for "Silicon Valley" and Jill Soloway for "Transparent." Nominees for the TV Movie and Miniseries category included Lisa Cholodenko for "Olive Kitteridge" and Ryan Murphy for "The Normal Heart." In 2009, the Internet went crazy over a rumor that Neil Patrick Harris would play The Flash in a big screen "Justice League" movie. That didn’t happen — Ezra Miller got the job and Harris settled with voicing the character in a direct-to-dvd animated film. But now it’s looking like "Gone Girl" costar could finally get a superheroic boost from the team behind CW’s "The Flash." They’ll be feeding Harris his lines when he takes on hosting duties for the 87th Academy Awards. Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced that writer, producer and director Greg Berlanti joins the team as head writer for his first Oscars telecast. The name should be familiar to anyone absorbed in comic book movie/TV sagas; Berlanti’s writing credits include the television series “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “Everwood” and “Dawson’s Creek,” and the feature films “Wrath of the Titans” and “Green Lantern.

Five-time Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara (most recently of The Bridges of Madison County) has joined the cast as Mrs. Darling, the wife of no-nonsense George Darling (Christian Borle). Last night the 2014 Emmy Award winners were announced with "Breaking Bad" taking home top honors with five wings including Outstanding Drama Series, followed by "Modern Family" with three wins including Outstanding Comedy Series. FX programs "American Horror Story: Coven" and "Fargo" each took home two awards including an Outstanding Miniseries win for "Fargo". Meanwhile, new shows such as "Orange is the New Black" and "Silicon Valley" went home empty handed and for all the fanfare it received in its first season, including 12 Emmy nominations, "True Detective" only took home one win, that being for director Cary Joji Fukunaga". Personally, I don't give a lick about the Emmys, it's right there with the Grammys in terms of worthless awards shows for me. It's a show wherein people must nominate themselves and while most award shows are no better, this one is down there near the bottom for me. So, with that said,...

Breaking Bad’s amazing final season always meant that it was a likely winner come awards season. However, the debut of the critically acclaimed True Detective earlier this year did leave many wondering whether it might rob the end to Walter White’s story of one final sweep of prizes at last night’s Emmy Awards.
As it turns out, Breaking Bad would end up being rewarded for those amazing final episodes, though True Detective did earn a very well deserved award for director Cary Joji Fukunaga (who helmed all eight instalments).
The UK was represented by Sherlock, and that too did exceptionally well, walking away with Emmys for Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and writer Steven Moffat. Looking at the results, it’s hard to imagine anyone being too upset with the results, though many Game of Thrones fans won’t be happy to see that it was again snubbed.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Well, a few things, maybe.
It’s not at all hard to understand why Harvey Weinstein turned to Diane Paulus to overhaul Finding Neverland, the musical based on Miramax’s 2004 movie starring Johnny Depp as Peter Pan creator J.M Barrie. Paulus brings a broad catholicity of taste to her work as artistic director of the non-profit American Repertory Theatre, and that wide-ranging sensibility has led to her own souped-up, physically dazzling revivals of Hair and Pippin, both of which moved to Broadway.
When a 2012 tryout in Leicester, England under the leadership of Rob Ashford was met with yawns, Weinstein sent Finding Neverland back to the drawing board. In addition to hiring Paulus, he replaced Allan Knee (who wrote The Man Who Was Peter Pan, the basis for the film) with James Graham as book writer. U.K. pop-music specialists Gary Barlow...

Sometimes it seems that all the nutty superstitions surrounding Macbeth — pardon me, "the Scottish Play" — come not from its association with Elizabethan witchcraft or backstage mishaps, but from the sheer difficulty of doing it well. Until this week I would have said “the impossibility,” but here (at the Park Avenue Armory) is a swift, thrilling production starring Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston as Mr. and Mrs., directed by Branagh and Rob Ashford, that manages to solve many if not all of the classic Macbeth problems with only a small cost in seriousness. The cost in ducats — a minimum of $422 on StubHub for the few seats remaining — is slightly more substantial. At least you can see what the money went for. The vast acreage of the Armory’s drill hall, which easily contains the custom-built 1,050-seat Macbeth Experience theater, has rarely been put to better use, except perhaps...
