In the first few episodes of Apple TV+ series Palm Royale, Carol Burnett is entirely horizontal. And rightly so, since her character Norma Dellacorte in a coma. Fortunately though, Norma recovers in time to rip through some seriously juicy scenes with Kristin Wiig, who names Burnett, who turned 91 in April, as her career inspiration. “When they told me who was going to be in it,” says Burnett, “Kristen Wiig and Allison Janney and Laura Dern and Ricky Martin and Julia Duffy, I said, ‘I don’t care what it is. I want to be a part of it.’” From Burnett’s early days hosting long-running comedy-variety series The Carol Burnett Show, to films like A Wedding, Annie and Mad About You, to Better Call Saul, she has blazed a trail, garnering seven Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy along the way. Here, she recalls some favorite memories, picks her best...

If you’re not caught up on your peak TV viewing, consider this your spoiler warning. Four months have passed since Jennifer Coolidge bagged her second consecutive Emmy for “The White Lotus” and thus became the eighth drama or comedy series regular honored by the TV academy for a season in which her character died. Emmy nominations of this kind have become quite common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2024 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will be added to the list.
The current consensus among more than 2,400 Gold Derby users is that five continuing series performers whose characters perished within the past year will receive Emmy nominations, while a few others have outside shots at recognition. This does not include characters like Anakin Skywalker who died before their shows’ latest seasons began but appear as ghosts or in flashbacks. Undead characters like most of...

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

No man is an island. As much as we hate to admit it, sometimes, no one gets anywhere in life without someone believing in them. The same is true for Hollywood. It takes the stars aligning (pun intended) for any success story for anyone to really make it, and especially to escape the shadow of how they may be initially perceived.
There may be no better example of that than Mr. Channing Tatum. He told GQ in 2009, “I got crazy lucky. Like, sometimes I think I won the lottery or something. I don’t really know how I got here. But I just keep moving forward, and it just keeps getting better and better.” Had the stars aligned differently, he could have been just an exotic dancer and never entered the public consciousness. Or just a model. Or just played a jock. Or just played generic romantic leads. Or just played generic action roles.

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
Ten weeks deep and “Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia is still processing the success of his shimmering spring TV hit.
“I certainly live in an echo chamber on social media, so I’m seeing lots of ways in which it infiltrated culture,” the executive producer told IndieWire. “But I felt like we really crossed over when I saw that Ramona Singer from ‘Real Housewives’ was dressed for a ‘Palm Royale’-themed cocktail party. That’s when I went, ‘Uh-oh, something has changed here. Something has shifted.'”

[This story contains major spoilers from the season finale of Palm Royale.]
After a series of unsavory encounters with the black sheep of their exclusive social club in Palm Royale, Leslie Bibb’s character Dinah told Maxine two episodes ago, “I cannot tell if you are a country bumpkin or the most ruthless woman in Palm Beach.” If you ask Kristen Wiig — who portrays the eager newcomer into the wealthy Florida community — for her take, however, she’ll tell you, “I don’t think she’s either one of those things.”
Those words might not best characterize the former Chattanooga pageant queen who tries to impress a different set of judges in the Apple TV+ series (the unneighborly socialites she meets at the exclusive Palm Royale beach club when she moves to Palm Beach). But the duality of Maxine was an aspect of her character that Wiig worked hard to showcase.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Palm Royale Season 1 finale, “Maxine Throws a Party.”] Palm Royale‘s Beach Ball arrived in the Season 1 finale and delivered more than one explosive cliffhanger surrounding Maxine (Kristen Wiig), Norma (Carol Burnett), and their complicated societal entanglements. After spending most of the season preparing to throw the annual event, Maxine’s world was blown apart with the revelation that her husband Douglas (Josh Lucas) had cheated on her with manicurist Mitzi (Kaia Gerber), resulting in a pregnancy. The metaphorical bomb was dropped just seconds before Maxine took to the stage to deliver her performance of “Is That All There Is?” which soon turned into a monologue about her observations on life. At the same time, viewers learn that Norma, Douglas’s wealthy aunt, isn’t in fact a Dellacort, and seemingly murdered her former boarding school classmate, assuming her identity and inheritance. How do we know this? Robert (Ricky Martin...

On “Palm Royale,” Maxine knows how to throw a memorable party. Unfortunately for her attempts to break into Palm Beach society circa 1969, that isn’t the same thing as throwing a good party.
At the end-of-season Beach Ball — which also ends Season 1 of Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale” — Maxine should be poised for triumph. None other than President Richard Nixon is in attendance. He, like most of the other well-heeled guests, is eager to meet the guest-of-honor astronaut. Except the man in the space suit is actually Maxine’s pool boy. And her co-host, Evelyn (Allison Janney), left to have sex with her younger lover. Not to mention the revelation that Maxine’s friend, Mitzi, is pregnant by Maxine’s husband. And that’s not even including the showgirls and elaborate decor that is as kinetic as the revelations are frenetic. Is it any wonder Maxine’s planned performance of...

Apple Studios is facing a lawsuit accusing it of violating a series of California labor laws on the set of Palm Royale.
Daniel Ferguson, in a proposed class action filed on May 3 in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims the studio stiffed him and other background actors on pay, “maintained a policy and practice of not paying” them for all of the hours they worked and refused to provide legally-mandated meal breaks.
According to the complaint, Ferguson worked for Apple Studios, which didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, in Los Angeles for four months in 2022 during the production of Palm Royale. The satire, starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern and Ricky Martin, centers on a former pageant queen who tries to break into the upper echelons of high society in late 1960s Florida.

Getting ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actor? Be sure to take a tour of our photo gallery that showcases the leading contenders. Reigning victor Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”) is generally expected to retain his crown and thus become the 18th man to clinch this particular award more than once and the 13th to do so twice consecutively.
Whereas Moss-Bachrach was his program’s sole featured male nominee last year, he could very likely be joined in the upcoming lineup by three of his cast mates: Lionel Boyce, Matty Matheson, and Oliver Platt. All of said actors have never been recognized in this category before, but Platt has five outside notices under his belt, including a 2023 guest one for “The Bear.”

Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” remains one of the most beloved classic rock songs of the 1980s. Bon Jovi’s co-writer said he wrote it in a place that reminded him of an infamous scene from a horror film. Fascinatingly, the lyrics of an earlier Bon Jovi song partially inspired “You Give Love a Bad Name.”
Bon Jovi’s ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’ has a connection to Kiss
Desmond Child is a professional songwriter who became famous for working with classic rock acts like Alice Cooper (“Poison”), Aerosmith (“Dude Looks Like a Lady”), and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (“I Hate Myself for Lovin’ You”), as well as pop singers such as Katy Perry (“Waking Up in Vegas”), Ricky Martin (“Livin’ la Vida Loca”), and Ava Max (“Kings & Queens”). One of his most famous songs is Kiss’ disco/hard rock smash “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.

Award-winning Colombian director-producer Simon Brand and Miami-based media executive producer Daniel Eilemberg have joined forces with the founders of Emmy-winning Imaginer Films, Julio César and Laura Franco, to launch Clover Studios, a new production services company in Colombia.
