Many young stars were rising in Hollywood during the 1980s. It was one of the most critical decades in movie production due to its switch from focusing on films directed at adults to tween and teen flicks.
The '80s was an excellent decade for young movie fans. However, some movie stars, including Rob Lowe, had less fun, especially after journalist David Blum labeled them "The Brat Pack" in 1985.
Here's how Rob Lowe went from being a Brat Packer to being a family man and changed how he was perceived in Hollywood.
The Humble Origins of the Lowes
The term "Hollywood Icon" didn't always apply to Rob Lowe.
He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on March 17, 1964, but spent most of his childhood living in Dayton, Ohio.

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, a whopping 61 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12. Last year, there were only 48 options, compared to 41 in 2021 and 28 in 2020.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. A new rule change will require each voter to make no more than five selections in this category, whereas there was previously no limit. As opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

It was a night of firsts, lasts and an upset win as TV’s finest gathered together to celebrate the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC on September 19, 1993. Even the host made history — in more ways than one. Read on for our Emmys flashback 30 years ago to 1993.
For the first time ever, the ceremony was hosted solely by a female — who was also, ironically, the unluckiest actress in Emmy history. Up for her 13th Emmy nomination that evening, Angela Lansbury guided the ceremony with her usual grace. Lansbury passed away in 2022, with the record of most Best Drama Actress bids as well as the record for most overall nominations without a win at 18. However, she wasn’t the only one nominated at this ceremony who has never won despite numerous nominations, or the only one to lay claim to an unfortunate record.

Shaun Cassidy is stepping into the ranch family drama game with “Unbroken,” a drama pilot ordered by NBC. The show, which hails from Universal Television and Shaun Cassidy Productions, centers on three dynastic ranch families on the central coast of California, who make love and war in a passionate struggle to survive. Ultimately, this sets the stage for a group of fiercely determined young women to win big for all at the National Championship of Rodeo.
Cassidy will write and executive produce the pilot episode. If the series gets fully picked up by NBC, it will join a modern resurgence of westerns on TV — “Yellowstone” and “1883” on Paramount Network, “Walker” on the CW and western-adjacent shows like “The Mandalorian” on Disney Plus, “Westworld” on HBO Max, plus new Latinx vineyard family series “Promised Land” on ABC.
Cassidy, a singer, actor, writer and producer, is no stranger to the television landscape on-screen or behind-the-scenes.

“Quantum Leap” creator Donald P. Bellisario will serve as an executive produer via Belisarius Productions. Deborah Pratt will also executive produce, as will Martin Gero for Quinn’s House Productions. Universal Television will produce. Gero is currently under an overall deal at Utv.

The All American showrunner is rebooting classic ABC drama Life Goes On and is launching her own production company Rock My Soul Productions, with ex-Agbo exec and former WME agent Lindsay Dunn as Head of Television, as part of a major overall deal renewal with the studio.
Deadline understands that Warner Bros. beat out a number of other bidders to resign Okoro Carroll in a deal that is thought to be well into eight figures.

Nkechi Okoro Carroll has renewed her overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, where she has been based since 2018.
In addition, Okoro Carroll has formed a new production company called Rock My Soul Productions. She has brought on former Agbo executive and WME agent Lindsay Dunn to serve as the company’s head of television.
Rock My Soul already has its first project in development: a sequel series to the 1990s drama “Life Goes On.” Original cast members Kellie Martin and Chad Lowe will produce, with Martin also attached to star. Original series creator Michael Braverman will be an executive consultant. In the follow-up, a grown-up Becca Thatcher (Martin) is now an accomplished doctor who returns to her hometown to see her extended family.

As a lifelong resident of Dallas County, Peacock's new show Dr. Death hits very close to home. The series tells the story of Christopher Duntsch, a doctor who maimed and killed people during surgeries at hospitals across Texas. This thrilling drama is based on a hit podcast of the same name, and stars Joshua Jackson, AnnaSophia Robb, Christian Slater, Jamie Dornan, Alec Bladwin, Grace Gummer, and others. Though Dr. Death is certainly a dramatized version of the terrifyingly real Duntsch, much of what happens in the show did occur in reality. So how many people did Duntsch kill in real life? Here's what we know.
Duntsch operated on 37 patients in the Dallas-Fort Worth area between 2011 and 2013, killing two of them and harming 31 others. Kellie Martin died from significant blood loss after a surgery, and Floella Brown died after a sliced vertebral artery triggered a stroke. Some of his patients were permanently paralyzed,...

She ended her hiatus in 1979 by writing the story for, and producing, the CBS film “Orphan Train,” starring Jill Eikenberry. She went on to produce “Angel Dusted” starring Jean Stapleton for NBC, “License to Kill” with Denzel Washington for CBS and “Picking Up the Pieces” starring Margot Kidder for CBS.
In 1986, she won an Emmy for producing NBC’s Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation “Love is Never Silent,” which also won an Emmy for director Joseph Sargent and nominations for stars Mare Winningham and Phillis Frelich. The medical career of neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch is the stuff of horror stories, except it's very much real. After Duntsch operated on them, two patients died, and over 30 dealt with serious complications. For the longest time, Duntsch hopped from hospital to hospital without any real ramifications. The physician is the topic of Wondery's 2018 podcast Dr. Death, which is now getting the on-screen treatment on Peacock with a limited series that stars Joshua Jackson in the foreboding titular role. But even without media dramatization, the story of Christopher Duntsch is a wholly terrifying one.
Beginning work as a neurosurgeon in 2011, Duntsch appeared to be a trustworthy doctor, welcomed to the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute in Plano with a cushy $600,000 advance. He earned an M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Tennesse Health Science Center in Memphis. He ran two labs and raised millions in grant funding. But his performance...

The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 34 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 12.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 25 to cast their ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. Last year, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.
