“Run Lola Run” star Franka Potente felt “invincible” while filming Tom Tykwer’s playful, propulsive 1999 hit, which had her running full-tilt through Berlin three times in a row to save her boyfriend, with a different outcome each time.
“I remember feeling invigorated all the time because you feel like you’re part of the process,” Potente raved to TheWrap about working with the director on the breakout film, which is back in theaters for its 25th anniversary.
“Tom immediately invited me into his way of thinking and made me a part of it. I wish more directors were aware of this, because you get more out of the experience with your actors,” Potente added. She and Tykwer started dating after “Lola” and then re-teamed for “The Princess and the Warrior” in 2000.

It’s a big weekend for critically acclaimed indies in limited release as well as a handful of moderate openings, including Richard Gere’s latest film Longing. The provenance of that is unusual as the film from Lionsgate/Grindstone is a Canada-set remake of a 2017 Israeli drama. The original was quite well received, but the film opening this weekend has been thoroughly skewered by critics.
After winning screenplay and audience awards in Israel, the original film premiered in Venice, taking the Bnl People’s Choice Award, then played Toronto.
Both versions are written and directed by Savi Gabizon. Characters and story are identical: a successful single American businessman (Gere) meets up with a 20-year-old old flame (Suzanne Clément) and learns that he has a son, and, a beat later, that the young man has just died in a car accident. Trying to process that and find a connection,...

When I talked to German writer-director Tom Tykwer and his “Run Lola Run” star Franka Potente on Zoom recently, Tykwer and I remembered our interview 25 years ago when Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) released the movie the first time. (Not that I could find that interview online.) It became a word-of-mouth hit all over the world, scoring $22.9 million worldwide. “It was one of our top movies,” said SPC co-president Michael Barker on the phone. “Our goal has been to find movies that stand the test of time. It was one of the first movies with English subtitles that the younger generation turned out for.”
“Run Lola Run” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1998 before opening in the U.S. in early 1999. Now, SPC has orchestrated a 4K restoration coming to 250 theaters on June 7, following the success with younger audiences of such recent classic reissues as A24’s “Stop Making Sense” and SPC’s “Amelie.

Franka Potente was smoking two packs of cigarettes a day when she shot ‘Run Lola Run’.The German actress, 49, shot to fame playing Lola in the 1998 thriller who sprints around the streets trying to raise 100,000 Deuthschmarks in 20 minutes to save the life of her boyfriend. She has now told Variety about how she wasn’t in shape while filming its gruelling running scenes: “I didn’t do any preparation really. I was probably smoking two packs of cigarettes a day at that point. “And I was doing all this running – I was running in rehearsals, I was running when we shot all the different takes, and I would run again so we could get the sound right. I was carried along by all this energy.” Even though Franka could wear trainers in shots in ‘Run Lola Run’ where her feet weren’t in the frame, she stuck to Lola’s signature Dr Martens.

Of all the heady-cool, matrix-of-reality, the-digital-future-is-now movies released in 1999, “Run Lola Run” may have been the 1999iest. Sure, “The Matrix” was the sci-fi landmark that bullet-timed audiences into the 21st century. But science-fiction movies have always looked ahead. That’s their job. (Maybe the first true movie of 1999 was “2001: A Space Odyssey.”) “Run Lola Run” was a candy-colored punk Berlin fantasia set in this world, and that was its glory.
The movie is being rereleased, starting Friday, June 7, in a new 4K version to mark the 25th anniversary of its release in America. (It came out in Germany the year before.) And what a difference a quarter of a century makes! The days of our lives now run on digital kinetic energy. Our stories live in multiverses. Our imaginations hum and click to the mutating magic of technological possibility. When we don’t like reality, we reset it. “Run Lola Run” foresaw all that,...

A quarter-century after its release, Run Lola Run is still not out of breath. Both stylistically and spiritually, the film’s influence permeates through 21st-century moviemaking. Tom Tykwer’s explosion of kinetic energy, starring Franka Potente in her breakout role, burst onto the global cinematic scene in the final year of the 1990s, its iconoclastic structure reflecting emerging forms of media ranging from video games to music videos.
And yet what’s true about most works that can go the distance in the popular imagination also applies to Run Lola Run: As the timeliness fades, the timelessness emerges. The film’s form isn’t a kneejerk response to prevailing cultural aesthetics but an imaginative outgrowth of its very plot. Run Lola Run presents a triptych of possibilities as Potente’s red-headed Lola seeks to find and deliver the 100,000 German marks needed to replace those that her boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), lost.

With Run Lola Run‘s 25th anniversary release this weekend in a new 4K restoration, we are reposting our Spring, 1999 cover interview with director Tom Tykwer. Among the last year’s festival staples, the most exhilarating may have been Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run. The self-taught 34-year-old Berliner’s third feature is a clock-driven, lighter-than-air romantic-action-comedy-thriller floating atop a percolating electronica score. The film plays out three potential narratives of what dangers and distractions the streets of Berlin hold just before noon for Lola (Franka Potente) and Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), two effortlessly cool, suddenly in trouble twentysomething lovers. Manni loses 100,000 marks […]

The hair was a whole thing.
In “Run Lola Run,” the 1999 German thriller that made Franka Potente a star, the actress hurtles through the streets of Berlin, seemingly propelled by her flaming-red tresses.
“My hair had been jet-black from my previous job, so they bleached it eight times,” she says, shaking her head slightly. “For Lola, we tried all these different colors before they found this red dye that came from London. But it would wash out, so I couldn’t wash my hair during the production because it would mess up the continuity.”
And making the low-budget movie meant long hours and, as the title suggests, a lot of running. “Run Lola Run” finds its 20-something protagonist in a race against the clock to help her boyfriend replace a drug dealer’s bag of money that he lost. Most movie stars would sign up for a few triathlons or...

The finale of Castlevania: Nocturne Season 1 begins, appropriately, in darkness. In the eighth and last episode, “Devourer of Light,” darkness eclipses the sun, with just a ring of light visible around its edges. Will the vampire messiah Erzsebet Báthory (Franka Potente) be triumphant in her mission to enshroud the world in an endless night? Can Richter Belmont (Edward Bluemel) and his friends possibly prevail against her powerful vampire cabal? From creators Clive Bradley and Kevin Kolde and directors Sam and Adam Deats, the eight-episode animated series has reached its cliff-hanger apex, and we’re here to break it down. Read on for an explainer about that surprise Season 1 ending.
What happens in the Episode 8 finale of Castlevania: Nocturne?
First, a quick refresher: When Season 1 begins, we’re in Boston and it’s 1783, 300 years after the first Castlevania series. We meet young Richter, born into the Belmont family...

The movie’s pacing plays a major part in its eventual perception by the audience. It gives the filmmakers the freedom of choice whether to stick to the usual narration or to speed up or, on the contrary, slow down the plot progression to create a special impression and to make their movies memorable.
We can recall the fast-paced Trainspotting (1996) or Fight Club (1999), with both of them becoming cultish features, definitive for the whole generation. However, there is a lesser-known 1990’s movie that is also quick to start and to throw a viewer into the heat of its events, appearing to be a brilliant must-watch.
Its plot revolves around the young Lola, who receives a devastating phone call from her boyfriend Manni. It turns out that he lost 100,000 Deutschmarks that he was sent to bring to his gangster boss, and he begs Lola to somehow find the necessary amount of...

"Every second of every day you make a choice that can change your life." Sony Classics posted an updated 2024 official trailer for the 4K re-release of this German classic Run Lola Run, which originally debuted in 1998 some 26 years ago. It played at Sundance 1999 (and won the Audience Award there) and also screened at the 1998 Venice & Toronto Film Festivals. After her boyfriend botches a money handover, Lola has 20 minutes to bring 100,000 Dm to him or he robs a store. If the money is not returned, there will be consequences. We see three possible scenarios, depending on Lola's encounters. She races through the streets of Berlin to find the money and bring it to him on the other side of the city before it's too late. Lola better get some new sneakers.
Sony Pictures Classics has announced it will re-release Tom Tykwer’s 1999 German action classic Run Lola Run, in a new 4K restored version, in U.S. cinemas this summer, timed to the 25th anniversary of the movie’s original domestic bow.
Franka Potente stars as the titular athletic Lola in the film, racing to find 100,000 deutsche marks in time to rescue her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu) who is in deep with a local gangster. Every choice Lola makes, big or small, changes her ultimate fate. The film is told three times, with three separate endings, an approach that recalls video game aesthetics. Herbert Knaup, Joachim Król and Nina Petri co-star.
Run Lola Run was a sensation when it was first released and grossed more than $7 million in the United States and Canada for SPC, becoming one of the highest-grossing non-English-language films ever at that time.

The live-action Titans series had tremendous potential, from its source material to the pedigrees of the talent bringing the heroes to television. Titans failed to work from the first episode to the last. As a television series, it needed a bigger budget for better effects, and the caliber of actors needed to be stronger to pull off these larger-than-life personalities.
Most of the storylines were drawn from Marv Wolfman and George Pérez’s seminal run from the early 1980s or the early issues from Geoff Johns and Mike McKone’s run in the 2000s. Both required a consistent tonality along with a budget to make the scope of the stories work.

Throughout four episodes, the events at Enfield are reconstructed using the recordings captured by Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator who archived all of his interviews from back in the day. The doc built a replica of the council house where the incidents took place so performers could reenact what is heard on the tapes.
The docu-series also features appearances by people who were actually involved in the haunting case.

The beginning of Titans‘ end is nigh, with the back half of the superhero team-up series’ fourth — and final — season kicking off this Thursday on HBO Max, with the first two episodes of six.
When last we tuned in…. Dick, Kory et al had valiantly tried, yet failed, to keep Mother Mayhem from fulfilling the Blood Moon Prophecy. Rachel (newly transformed into White Raven) and Kory (who now has access to a 80% of her potential power) were raining white and blue power blasts on Mother Mayhem, until Sebastian — tired of “being nothing” — proceeded to drink the ceremonial blood.

The sun never sets in the world of streaming. After a jam-packed March that saw both "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" series going head-to-head with "Ted Lasso" -- not to mention, the much-buzzed-about return of "Yellowjackets" and the final hurrah of the Shakespearean tragedy that is "Succession" — it seems April is angling to keep the party going. Between "Schmigadoon!" and "The Afterparty" coming back, "Barry" setting sail for the Grey Havens with its final season, and whatever the hell Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof have cooked up for us with "Mrs. Davis," next month won't be hurting for appointment TV.
Not about to be left in the dust by its competitors, Netflix has its own plans for April. In addition to its typical monthly smattering of non-exclusive titles, the streamer will be dropping a 30th anniversary "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" reunion special, "Once & Always," just to make all you Millennials...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we're breaking down one of the greatest car chases ever put to film in "The Bourne Supremacy.")
Movies and television in the early 2000s might as well be a time capsule, forever preserving a uniquely tumultuous time in U.S. and world history like a mosquito in amber. "The Lord of the Rings" movies will probably always be upheld as the earliest and most significant form of post-9/11 cinema, providing exactly the kind of fantasy escapism that so many audiences were suddenly desperate for on a cellular level. But on the extreme other end of the spectrum, one action franchise had no choice but to steer directly into the skid, addressing some of the most fraught and deeply uncomfortable aspects of the United States government that nobody wanted to talk about.

This post contains spoilers for the fourth season of "Titans."
At the midpoint of the fourth season, "Titans" has taken the trailer slogan "new beginning" to heart so far. The change of scenery for the titular superhero team has brought in new allies and villains into the fold, from Lex Luthor (Titus Welliver) to Jinx (Lisa Ambavalanar). A different tone also permeates throughout the series, one that aptly mixes a good dose of horror with noticeably fluffier superhero stuffing. But the Titans themselves still have a lot to learn, especially Superboy, aka Conner Kent (Joshua Orpin). The most powerful member of the team has arrived at an existential crossroads this season, and it's evolved him into becoming a very different kind of character that leans into his heritage.

This post contains mild spoilers for "Titans" season 4.
A new season of "Titans" is upon us, and it's more unhinged than ever before. A blend of magic and horror, season 4 delves into the supernatural as the titular team finds itself at the center of a prophecy that could end the world for good. With the introduction of the Cult of Blood and its leader Mother Mayhem (Franka Potente), "Titans" shifts gears to deliver the most formidable threat in the series yet. But as with every villain, they need some henchman to serve as cannon fodder for the heroes. Historically, it's usually random guys in S.W.A.T. gear for the Titans, but this time around, the antagonist raises the dead, because why the hell not?
In the fourth episode, "Titans" looks to explain Mother Mayhem's backstory and her intentions with Sebastian Blood (Joseph Morgan). This leads to the superhero...

This post contains spoilers for the fourth season of "Titans."
The fourth season of "Titans" is not perfect by any means, but it's a sizeable step up from previous years. The titular superhero team finally has some sort of rhythm, and a change of scenery to Metropolis is proving to be a locale worth exploring. The addition of a few iconic Teen Titans villains doesn't hurt, either. But the mid-season finale has arrived, and folks, it's finally happened. After three seasons of morphing into a tiger (and the occasional bat), Beast Boy (Ryan Potter) has finally spread his wings and turned into something even cooler.
As a longtime "Titans" watcher, I was almost content with the fact that Beast Boy would always turn into a tiger, and the occasional bat or snake. But his character development remained ever so stagnant, until now. In season 4, "Titans" finally gives Beast Boy the time of the day,...

After three tumultuous outings, DC's "Titans" train continues to chug along in full force. Self-proclaimed as a new beginning for the series, the fourth season moves towards a more consistent future as a superhero show and quasi-family drama. As per usual, a new location and set of villains threaten to uproot the titular superhero team. But the supernatural reigns supreme this time around, delivering a blend of magic and horror more devious than the last three seasons combined. Throw in a few daddy issues, and you have a well-received fourth season. However, that's not all. A fan-favorite character will make their return sooner rather than later.
The fourth season of "Titans" looks to turn the page on the long-standing series, but it is still not afraid to pull from the past. The origins of Mother Mayhem (Franka Potente) and Brother Blood (Joseph Morgan) are distinctly tied to the events of the very first season.

If the apparent success of Amazon’s The Terminal List proved anything, it’s that there’s an audience out there for fast-moving militaristic revenge stories with more interest in a steadily escalating body count than anything deeper.
Mark Boal’s new Apple TV+ drama Echo 3 will put to the test whether viewers are willing to stick with their militaristic revenge stories if they come packaged with some nuance and characterization. Based on the Israeli format When Heroes Fly, Echo 3 has all the fetishistic shots of weapons and arbitrarily featured American flags one could ever want, and the body count rises steadily. But those things are accompanied by artier touches, whether it’s blades of grass swaying in the wind, attempts to delve superficially into the political realities of contemporary South America or just action scenes that unfold with a deliberate — right on the edge of “slow” — pace.

Plot: When brilliant scientist Amber Chesborough vanishes along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother and her husband—both elite U.S. Army commandos—struggle to find her amid a guerilla war, discovering that the woman they love might have a secret.
Review: Mark Boal has made a career out of telling military stories. From those grounded in true stories (Zero Dark Thirty) to those inspired by reality (The Hurt Locker), Boal has also transitioned to action-oriented blockbusters like Triple Frontier. His latest project is Echo 3, an international espionage thriller full of gritty action and military tactics that attempts to tell a sociopolitical drama full of heavy stuntwork and complicated storytelling. Despite some truly pulse-pounding firefights that rival any of his big-screen efforts, Mark Boal’s characters cannot rise to the same level of complexity as the action sequences. Echo 3 is decent but far from as good as it should, or could, be.
