“Oppenheimer” grabbed two out of three prizes at the Motion Picture Sound Editor’s 71st Golden Reel Awards on March 3 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater. Christopher Nolan’s explosive Oscar favorite won Dialogue/Adr and Effects/Foley, while Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” snagged Music Editing. Both films were led by supervising sound editor Richard King.
After also taking the top sound mixing prize this weekend at the 60th Cas Awards, “Oppenheimer” is now in the Oscar driver’s seat against the other sound nominees: “The Zone of Interest.” “Maestro,” “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” and “The Creator.”
The other Golden Reel film winners went to “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” for animated feature, “32 Sounds” for documentary, and “Society of the Snow” for foreign language. May the Force be with… Emmy voters? Disney Plus amassed an impressive 40 Emmy nominations this year (up from 34 last year) thanks to its stable of “Star Wars” saga hits, which accounted for more than half of the mouse house’s total haul of 23 bids — nine for “The Mandalorian,” eight for “Andor,” five for “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and one for docuseries “Light & Magic.”
Although “Mandalorian” nabbed nine bids, the real success story this year is “Andor,” scoring a Best Drama Series nomination for its debut season plus writing and directing bids and five Creative Arts noms. The latest live-action series in the Disney-era “Star Wars” franchise, “Andor” serves as a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016) and also by extension to the original Oscar-winning classic “Star Wars” (1977).
Diego Luna reprises his “Rogue One” role as the titular interplanetary thief-turned-Rebel spy Cassian Andor and also serves as an executive producer on the series,...

It's always fun to discover how certain sounds are created for films. For instance, the classic coconut shells clapping together to create the sound of horse hooves or breaking celery to simulate the sound of cracking bones. For sci-fi and fantasy films, some of the sounds you have to come up with have no real-world equivalent. It's not like you can go out and study the audio emanations of a dragon or the sound of an entire planet blowing up. Sound designers have to be creative to come up with the signature noises from creatures, vehicles, and all sorts of other things that don't exist on Earth.
Sometimes that can get pretty weird, as it did on the set of the first film in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, "The Force Awakens." Sound editor David Acord had an interesting problem on his hands in one fight scene. He had to...

Most of the world knows Mark Hamill by sight. He played Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" franchise, an acting gig that has spanned over four decades. You might even have an action figure of him in your house right now. In addition, Hamill has slayed audiences with his voice work as the Joker in Batman TV shows, animated projects, and video games since 1992. Hamill's voice work (including his insanely accurate impression of "Star Wars" co-star Harrison Ford) is incredible, and while he won a Daytime Emmy for his role in "Elena of Avalor," he was never even nominated for the Joker. That's a crime, and it's unlikely to happen now that his Batman counterpart Kevin Conroy has died.
One job he did get a Daytime Emmy nomination for was voicing Darth Bane in season 6, episode 13 of the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," entitled "Sacrifice." However, according to...

"Andor" has continually proved itself to be not only one of the darker and more intense "Star Wars" projects to date but, also one of the more creative and inspired. The writing and production design of "Andor" go hand-in-hand to tell a compelling story, giving a deeper look at the machinations of the Empire and all their twisted ways of torture and stomping out rebellion. The attention to detail makes everything feel much more real, with the Imperial prison factory where Cassian is imprisoned being a perfect example of a great set with so many details that it feels like a character in and of itself.
Another aspect critical to "Andor" is the torture device used in episode 9. Long after Cassian and Luthen made their daring escape from Ferrix, the planet still ended up suffering the consequences of Cassian's actions. After being forcefully arrested by Imperial officers, Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona...

To its credit, "Andor" is a series that has largely eschewed the urge to turn "Star Wars" into an Easter egg hunt, avoiding some of the more overt callbacks or rhyming patterns of other movies and TV shows in the franchise. Sure, there's a nod to blue milk, and the latest episode batch, set in a pristine white prison work facility, visually and thematically references George Lucas's first movie, "Thx 1138." But on the whole, "Andor" has been subtle about echoing previous "Star Wars" moments. You wouldn't necessarily expect it to mirror a scene from the original "Star Wars" film, but that's what it did with the torture of Bix Caleen (Adria Arjona).
In "Andor" episode 9, Bix has headphones placed over her ears and is forced to endure a new insidious form of torture that subjects the listener to the dying screams of an alien race. The screams are...

“Tenet,” “Eurovision Song Contest,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Greyhound” have won feature-film awards at the Motion Picture Sound Editors Mpse Golden Reel Awards, which took place on Friday evening in a virtual event.
The Mpse divides the art of sound editing into several different categories, with “Tenet” winning for underscore, “Eurovision Song Contest” for music, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” for dialogue/Adr and “Greyhound” for effects/foley.
In the past, the last of those categories has most closely corresponded to the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing — but that Oscar category was merged with the Best Sound Mixing category into a single Best Sound category this year. “Greyhound” is nominated in that category, along with “Soul,” “Mank,” “News of the World” and “Sound of Metal.”

The Rise of Skywalker wasn’t the only Star Wars movie to feature a minor cameo from George Lucas.
According to sources close to ABC News, the former Lucasfilm boss was also referenced in both Rogue One and The Last Jedi – albeit through the power of audio.
The recently-released Episode IX contained a deep audio Easter egg that just so happens to be a scream from George Lucas himself. The clip, which has since been dubbed “The George,” was first recorded all the way back in 1973 for American Graffiti, though it’s only now that it’s beginning to gain traction online. So much so, in fact, that it’s even being compared to the “Wilhelm Scream,” an incredibly distinctive audio clip that you’ve no doubt heard ten times before, after Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt stitched it into dozens of different films, including every installment of Indiana Jones.

By now, the adorably ambiguous enunciations and coos of The Mandalorian’s Baby Yoda, a.k.a. The Child, are well known to Star Wars fans who have embraced the runaway hit launch title of streaming platform Disney+. However, as the show’s sound designer reveals, the seemingly simple samples were the culmination of a process that started in a completely different direction.

The climactic scene of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has Rey hear the echoing voices of past Jedi whose legacy she carries, lending her their strength against the undead might of the Emperor. And even though it would have been straightforward to pull them from archives, almost everything heard was a new recording.
Confirmation came from the film’s sound editor Matthew Wood, who had this to say about the endeavor of creating the audio montage:
“We got Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson and Sam Jackson. It was wonderful to have all the actors come back and be able to revisit their characters. I had to fly all around the world to go get them all. Everyone just has such a great love for Star Wars, and it was so fun to see all the different eras of Star Wars represented in that moment. It ends with Luke Skywalker telling her to get up,...

Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

"They said that they'd kill my entire family... They even sent me a picture of my mom at the post office – you tell me what you would do?" Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for an indie film called Transpecos, a tense thriller about Border Patrol agents that first premiered at SXSW. The cast features Johnny Simmons, Gabriel Luna, Clifton Collins Jr., David Acord and Oscar Avila. Three Border Patrol agents operate a remote checkpoint in the desert, and things get tense once they discover what's inside one car that appears. This took filmmaker Greg Kwedar six years to make, in hopes of telling human stories caught within the balance. This is a solid trailer, I like that it ends on a very tense moment. Here's the official trailer (+ a poster) for Greg Kwedar's Transpecos, in high def from Apple: Depicting corruption as unavoidable as the desert heat,...

Ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released, people have been pointing out all kinds of Easter eggs and references from the film. You might think you already know them all, but new ones seem to keep popping up!
The latest Easter egg that has been revealed in the movie involves Indiana Jones. The information comes from sound designer David Acord during an interview with Nerdist. He explains that during the scene where Han Solo and Chewbacca are running down the hall away from by the rolling monstrous rathtar, he threw in a sound effect from Indiana Jones. He says:

Remember when that Nazi’s face melted off at the end of Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark? It turns out that The Force Awakens uses that exact same sound in its infamous Nazi face-melting scene! Oh, that wasn’t The Force Awakens? Then what the hell was I watching? According to their interview with The Nerdist, Tfw supervising sound editor Matthew Wood and sound designer David Acord did sneak a little Indy into one of Han Solo’s scenes. If the tentacled rathtar chasing our heroes through the Millennium Falcon sounded like it was rolling, your ears must be like dog's ears or something. “I put in the sound of Ben Burtt’s boulder-roll sound from Raiders of the Lost Ark when the boulder is chasing Indy,” reveals Acord. You can listen to the entire interview here. Meanwhile, I have to go back to that Blockbuster...

Easter eggs in movies are nothing new. Filmmakers like to put references to other films in their new movies all the time. Sometimes these references are direct, and other times they.re much more subtle. It turns out that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has a reference to Raiders of the Lost Ark in it. Although, you probably didn.t notice underneath the sound of the screaming rathtar. David Acord, sound designer on The Force Awakens, told Nerdist that during the scene where Han Solo and Chewbacca are running down the hall to escape from the rolling rathtar, he added a sound effect from another Harrison Ford movie that harkened back to that moment. Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.
