“Gladiator” changed Russell Crowe’s life. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Maximus in Ridley Scott’s Roman Empire epic and spent a few years as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The film means a lot to him personally. So he’s having some mixed feelings about “Gladiator II,” Scott’s upcoming sequel starring Denzel Washington and Paul Mescal as Maximus’ son, Lucius.
Spoiler alert for a 24-year-old movie: Maximus dies at the end of “Gladiator.” So Crowe is not in “Gladiator II,” and he’s not involved with the production. In an interview with radio host Kyle Meredith, Crowe admitted to being “slightly uncomfortable” with the fact that they’re making another “Gladiator” film.
“Because of course, I’m dead, and I have no say in what gets done,” he explained, with a little bit of a wry smile. “A couple of things that I’ve heard,...

The first Gladiator film starring Russell Crowe was a seminal film that ushered in the beginning of the new century. The film showcased Crowe at his best as an actor, while also reminding audiences of the brilliance of Ridley Scott as a director. The film went on to win Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. Many still rewatch the film and celebrate its narrative triumph.

Ridley Scott’s sword-and-sandal sequel Gladiator 2 is out in November, but is now undergoing reshoots in Sussex. Paul Mescal’s been photographed in his Roman garb.
Filming on Ridley Scott’s belated sword-and-sandal sequel Gladiator 2 wrapped in January this year, and the reports from test screenings was highly positive. More recently, however, came news that the production would be gearing back up again for a round of reshoots – and judging by some recent photographs, they’re fairly extensive.
Star Paul Mescal has been captured in his full Roman warrior costume, while other candid photos from the set show a huge army of extras and horses in formation – it looks as though what’s being filmed in a field somewhere in Sussex is some sort of battle sequence.
The images from the reshoots were spotted by World of Reel, and originally published in a British newspaper whose name rhymes with Hazy Jail.

If we wanted to be frank, Gladiator II, when originally confirmed, was among the more unexpected sequels we got. It’s not that we did not want it… but there was a feeling that we did not want it 20+ years later and in a phase when Hollywood was scraping off the success of previous movies and franchises. Sure, the history of Roman gladiators is a rich one, but when Scott’s original film first aired, especially with what happened to the main character, no one really wanted a sequel more than two decades later. But, here we are… we’re back in Ancient Rome, and the movie is, if everything goes according to plan, going to come out on November 22, 2024, and will star Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal as Lucius Verus, a character from the first movie.
Now, no major news regarding the release has been confirmed in the meantime, but what...

Russell Crowe has admitted that he’s “slightly uncomfortable” with the idea of upcoming sequel to Gladiator that’s currently in production.
Crowe famously starred in the 2000 historic epic, winning an Academy Award for his performance as the Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius. Now some 24 years later, director Ridley Scott is putting the finishing touches on a sequel film centered around the character of Lucius, the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus who was saved by Crowe’s Maximus in the original movie.

Denzel Washington is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors who has graced the silver screen with many acclaimed performances to his credit. The actor has played heroic characters for most of his career in impressive films such as Mo’ Better Blues, Philadelphia, Courage Under Fire, and Glory winning an Oscar for the latter.
Denzel Washington as Easy Rawlins in Devil in a Blue Dress
His second Oscar win for Best Actor came with his antagonistic turn as Alonzo in Antoine Fuqua’s Training Day. Washington had never played a sleazy and morally complicated character like Alonzo before. However, he was vying to play one much before that film and one such antagonistic performance that he was envious of was of Don Cheadle in Devil in a Blue Dress.

Celebration of cinema has always been extended by the Oscars honoring the prowess of cinematic excellence with one of the most recognized accolades. Throughout the rich history of cinema, there have been several movies based on true events, that left a mark among moviegoers or in the pages of history.
A still from Lawrence of Arabia
Also, movies that are based on true events are another way of documenting the particular incident, albeit a portion of fictionalization may alter the accuracy, but for cinema’s sake, filmmakers enjoy the basic freedom to have their own touch to the narrative. Throughout history, movies like The Great Ziegfeld by Robert Z. Leonard, or it would be criminal not to mention David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, and several other movies have claimed the Best Picture Oscars. Here is a list of six movies that won an Oscar in the Best Picture category.

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Back in 2000, director Ridley Scott took us back to 180 Ad for Gladiator, which told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), who is favored by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his successor because his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule. Commodus disagrees, so he murders his father, has Maximus arrested, and has Maximus’s wife and son killed. While Commodus establishes himself as the new emperor, Maximus escapes from captivity – only to be captured again, this time by slavers who sell him off to become a gladiator. Soon he’s fighting in front of Commodus in Rome’s Colosseum… and it all builds up to Commodus challenging Maximus to a duel. Gladiator was a major box office success and racked up multiple Academy Award wins, including Best Picture. So there was already talk of a sequel in 2001, but it ended up taking more than...

Vampires and werewolves are big business in mainstream media, with a veritable feast of TV shows and movies being dedicated to the mythical creatures across the decades. So when something comes along that slots straight into the mainstream zeitgeist with its gothic visuals and sexy vampires fighting pesky swearwolves, you know what’s coming next. Yup, sequels and prequels! As mentioned in our previous episode that sunk its teeth into the fun but flawed Underworld from 2003, director Len Wiseman found love with his leading lady, Kate Beckinsale. And, if you’re being massively cynical, you could perhaps suggest that their star-struck Hollywood romance is one of the main reasons a follow-up to the first movie was green-lit. Or maybe it was the decent box-office, cool world-building or maybe even the lashings of S&m clad characters? The first movie, as we discussed previously, is flawed and far from perfect but you know what,...

Instead of sending in the lions, Paramount unleashed a first look at Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated Gladiator II at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Appropriately screened at Caesar’s Palace, where the annual onslaught of film and television previews takes place, the sequel to Scott’s 2000 action drama starring Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix includes a brutal display of power and corruption as Lucius (Paul Mescal) aims to become as formidable as Crowe’s iconic character Maximus Decimus Meridius.
During Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott introduced the film from London while the entire cast sent comments in a video compilation. Scott says Gladiator II is more spectacular than the original. Thems bold words, sir!
Pedro Pascal has always been a huge Gladiator fan and has seen it twice in theaters. Meanwhile, Denzel Washington says the new film is why people go to the movies.

It's been 24 years since Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" brought the glory and gore of ancient Rome to gorgeous life, and now the prolific director has returned to the tale with "Gladiator 2." Set 20-30 years after the events of the first film, "Gladiator 2" will star Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Roman Empress Lucilla. Though Maximus (Russell Crowe) died along with Lucius's vicious uncle Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) at the end of "Gladiator," both Lucilla and Lucius survived.
The movie will also star Denzel Washington as an arms dealer who has a stable of gladiators and Joseph Quinn as Emperor Caracalla, along with Pedro Pascal, May Calamawy, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, Fred Hechinger, and Derek Jacobi. That's quite a packed cast, although with a reportedly massive budget of more than $300 million, "Gladiator 2" could prove to be a disaster financially while paying off well for movie-goers who want to see some high-end historical fiction.

There was something fitting about the setting.
Paramount Pictures unveiled the first trailer from “Gladiator II” on the stage of The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, a Las Vegas hotel that reimagines Ancient Rome in all its decadent splendor, albeit with a few more slot machines. Director Ridley Scott seems to be offering a bloodier version of that distant age, one that finds Paul Mescal entering the arena as a nobleman who has renounced his privilege and finds himself in a life-and-death struggle for the amusement of the Roman people.
Based on the footage that Scott brought to Sin City to share with cinema owners, “Gladiator 2” recaptures the first film’s epic sprawl and shattering action sequences. The teaser saw Mescal face off against a charging rhino, a horde of vicious baboons, and Pedro Pascal, among other threats to his chiseled physique. There were also naval bombardments, political intrigue aplenty...

CiniemaCon 2024 is upon us, and as we prepare for a deluge of news, previews, and commentary from the show floor, JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, has spotted the official title for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator sequel. Given the film’s torturous production, Gladiator 2 is undoubtedly over budget. But just how much is a point of contention, it seems.
Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 has suffered quite a few issues throughout its production. Crew members were injured on set and hospitalised. The film was shut down due to the strikes, costing the production an estimated $600,000 per week as the industry shutdown lasted for months on end. PETA sent a letter to Scott expressing concern about the way horses and monkeys were being treated on set. One of the film’s stars, Barry Keoghan, left on the eve of production due to scheduling issues as well.
The film is now in the can, but at what cost? The labour stoppages alone were slated to have cost the film around $10m, but that doesn’t account for the film’s budget almost doubling, from an expected $165m to almost $310m.

Ridley Scott’s journey back to ancient Rome with the Gladiator sequel has hit a few bumps, financially speaking. What started with a budget of $165 million has astonishingly doubled to around $310 million. This has certainly caused some stress among the folks at Paramount, though they claim the expenses didn’t go over $250 million. The production faced several challenges, including on-set accidents and animal welfare complaints that didn’t sit well with many.
In comparison, the original Gladiator movie managed a worldwide gross of $460.6 million against a more modest budget of $103 million, setting a high bar for the sequel’s financial performance and success.
The anticipation for Gladiator 2 is high, with Paul Mescal playing Lucius, who’s now all grown up and entangled in the political webs of Rome. The cast is impressive, featuring stars like Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal, alongside returning faces Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi. The...

Paramount could throw Ridley Scott to the lions if Gladiator 2 fails to perform like gangbusters at the box office. A new report from The Hollywood Reporter reveals the ballooning cost of production on the anticipated sequel, with insiders close to the project saying the film budgeted at $165 million is closer to $310 million. Let that amount sink in for a moment.
Per THR’s sources, the net cost of the 49-day shoot was under $250 million. “It’s a runaway,” says one source. “It’s not being managed.” How did this happen? The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes did not help. Production for Gladiator 2 shut down in July because of the negotiations, costing the studio $600,000 a week, roughly $10 million. Scott resumed filming in December, though some say he continued to capture footage using extras during the strikes.
Some wonder if the Gladiator 2 set was cursed. In June, six crewmembers sustained non-life-threatening burn injuries.

Disney+ has released the trailer for the highly anticipated second season of the award-winning comedy ‘Extraordinary.’
Season two picks up where season one spectacularly left off, following Jen (Máiréad Tyers) on her powers journey as she enrols as a client at the power clinic. Jen soon discovers that the process of finding her power isn’t as easy as she hoped, and things in the rest of her life aren’t smooth sailing either. Ex-cat, now-boyfriend Jizzlord (Luke Rollason) has had an unexpected revelation about his past, and Kash (Bilal Hasna) and Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) are attempting to be totally mature and dignified about their break-up, which is not easy when they’re still living under the same roof. It seems that Jen and the gang are dealing with new levels of adulting and chaos that none of them are prepared for.

A pact between Apple Original Films, A24, Spike Lee, and Denzel Washington is making noise this Thursday with news about a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime drama High and Low. Lee and Washington are old friends, of course, with the duo’s fourth collaboration being for 2006’s Inside Man.
In Kurosawa’s High and Low, an executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. Details about Lee’s remake are scarce, though we know it will be an English-language reimagining of the original—details about how and if the plot will differ from Kurosawa’s classic crime drama remains a mystery.
Alan Fox and Lee wrote the screenplay for the High and Low remake, with A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures handling development. Production kicks off in March, with Todd Black producing for...

Ridley Scott is likely to be pretty happy that filming on Gladiator 2 has wrapped, following an ‘eventful’ shoot.
Bless Ridley Scott. The man is in his 80s and is making films with the sort of energy that someone half his age would struggle to match. Even still, the production of Gladiator 2 must have tested even his legendary levels of endurance. It’s all over now, though, reports World of Reel, with Scott and star Paul Mescal taking to social media to celebrate the production coming to a close.
Let’s recap on just how tricky a shoot it was for Scott and his collaborators. Back in the summer, four crew were hospitalised when a filming sequence went wrong. That alone would make things difficult, but that came on the heels of Barry Keoghan leaving on the eve of production due to a scheduling conflict. Losing an actor of...

Remember the first year of Russell T Davies reboot of Doctor Who? That season eased viewers back into the world of the Doctor, re-establishing a few classic villains such as the Daleks and the Autons, but also using the Time War as an excuse for avoiding references to the past.
Contrast that to the past few years, in which the show has no concerns with going back to previous adventures. Modern Doctors have met previous incarnations — sometimes in older form (as in the returns of Peter Davison and Tom Baker), sometimes recast (as in the case of David Bradley stepping in for William Hartnell), and sometimes in digital form (basically every other case). Classic villains have returned, not just the Master, the Daleks, or Cybermen, but even odd-balls like the Toymaker, whose one previous appearance can’t be watched in any form anymore. Most common, Doctor Who has brought back past companions,...

Ridley Scott has found the god of music for his upcoming ‘Gladiator’ sequel, reports ‘Variety’.
Harry Gregson-Williams has been hired to compose the score for the hotly anticipated Paramount feature, which is due to be out on November 22, more than 24 years after the Oscar-winning original starring Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix.
The film, adds ‘Variety’, marks the seventh collaboration between Scott and Gregson-Williams. The composer has penned the scores for ‘The Martian’, ‘Prometheus’, ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’, ‘Kingdom of Heaven’, ‘The Last Duel’ and ‘House of Gucci’.
Other credits for Gregson-Williams include ‘Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget’, ‘The Meg’, ‘Mulan’, ‘The Gilded Age’, ‘The Equalizer’, ‘Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason’, ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ and all three ‘Shrek’ films.
In something of a nice twist, ‘Variety’ notes, Gregson-Williams also spent many years as the protege of Hans Zimmer, who was the composer on the first ‘Gladiator’ (and landed...

The tale of the Ineffable Husbands isn't over just yet. Amazon has officially picked up "Good Omens" for a third and final season, with Neil Gaiman once again serving as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. For Gaiman, in particular, season 3 will offer him a chance to complete the story that he and the late, great Terry Pratchett -- his co-writer on the original "Good Omens" novel and the Aziraphale to his Crowley -- first began plotting out nearly 35 years ago.
After canceling the apocalypse in season 1, the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and the demon Crowley (David Tennant) spent most of "Good Omens" season 2 trying to uncover how Aziraphale's old boss, the archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm), came to find his way to Aziraphale's bookshop on Earth devoid of memories, clothes, and his not-so-winning smug personality. Ridley Scott will turn 86 on November 30, and the man shows no signs of slowing down. The wildly prolific filmmaker's latest historical epic, "Napoleon," hits theaters on November 22, but he's already gearing up for his next massive undertaking.
I wouldn't say moviegoers were clamoring for "Gladiator 2" (except maybe for the period when musician Nick Cave was writing his evidently bonkers screenplay), but once Scott began casting the sequel to the 2000 Best Picture winner, many of us were suddenly all the way in. How's this for a powerhouse ensemble: Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Matt Lucas, Djimon Hounsou, Connie Nielsen, and Derek Jacobi (the last three reprising their roles from the first movie).
And, oh yeah, Denzel Washington.
This will mark the two-time Academy Award-winning actor's second collaboration with Scott after "American Gangster," and his mere involvement is enough to make this one of 2024's most anticipated films. But now that Scott...

Denzel Washington is teaming up once again with his “Training Day” and “Equalizer” director Antoine Fuqua to play the ancient Carthaginian general Hannibal in an untitled Netflix movie, Variety has confirmed.
The film will be written by John Logan, the three-time Academy Award winner who scribed Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator” and Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator.”
According to the official logline, the movie is “based on real-life warrior Hannibal, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The film covers the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War.”
Hannibal invaded Italy while riding a Northern African war elephant. Under his lead, the Carthaginians won key victories against the Romans, allowing Hannibal to occupy the majority of southern Italy for 15 years. Eventually, Hannibal was defeated by the Romans at the Battle of Zama after they counter-invaded North Africa.

It’s time to get back to work! The end of the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike is finally here, and production for some of Hollywood’s most anticipated films can resume! With writers, actors, crew members, and more returning to Tinseltown, cinephiles can expect release date shuffles, reshoots, and creative shake-ups for projects across the entertainment spectrum. For example, Riley Scott’s Gladiator 2 will return to production when set builders repair the project’s elaborate filming environments.
In Malta, sets for Gladiator 2 are in disrepair. Months of neglect have caused the open-air set to “deteriorate” since July. The damaged locations include a massive recreation of ancient Rome, including a lifesize Coliseum desperate for some TLC – tender loving care, not the classic, safe-sex positive hip-hop band. While the crew prepares to return to the area, Scott is busy editing the 90 minutes of footage he managed to capture before the strikes told...

After a long pause, ‘Gladiator 2’ is finally set to resume its journey back to the big screen. The highly anticipated sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 blockbuster, ‘Gladiator,’ faced a major setback due to a strike by the SAG-AFTRA. However, with the strike now concluded, the film is ready to spring back into action.
Production for ‘Gladiator 2’ originally kicked off in June 2023, with expectations to wrap up in four months. But the unexpected strike starting July 14, 2023, brought everything to a standstill. The halt left the magnificent sets in Malta, including a life-sized Coliseum, in need of significant refurbishment.
Ridley Scott, renowned for directing the original ‘Gladiator,’ is back in command for this sequel. The cast is a vibrant mix of returning stars and exciting new talent. Among those reprising their roles are Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi, and Connie Nielsen. The film also welcomes fresh faces, including Paul Mescal as Lucius,...

Ridley Scott revealed in a recent New Yorker profile that he has been editing the 90 minutes of footage he was able to capture for “Gladiator 2” before the Hollywood strikes shut down production. Scott was shooting the long-awaited “Gladiator” sequel in Morocco when filming stopped indefinitely. He can’t resume production until the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved.
As reported by The New Yorker: “With SAG-AFTRA and the studios back in negotiations, he was preparing to pick up ‘Gladiator 2,’ which stars Paul Mescal, the moment the strike was resolved. ‘I could shoot on Monday,’ he said. (The talks fell apart a week later.) In the meantime, he’d been polishing the 90 minutes he had, including a scene in which the hero fights a pack of baboons; he’d been haunted, he said, by a video of baboons attacking tourists in Johannesburg: ‘Baboons are carnivores. Can you hang from that roof...
