Frank Darabont's 1999 Oscar darling "The Green Mile," based on an inexplicably serialized novel by Stephen King, is set in 1935 Louisiana in the fictional Cold Mountain Penitentiary, specifically the prison's death row. The correctional officers are overseen by Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) who struggles to retain his soul working such a dire job. The floor that leads to the prison's electric chair is painted green, earning it the titular nickname. Paul attempts to wrangle his officers' cruelty and retain what little hope he can, even after witnessing the state execute prisoner after prisoner. To make matters worse, he's suffering from a bladder infection.
The wildest prisoner on death row is William "Wild Bill" Wharton, played by the always amazing Sam Rockwell. Wharton was clearly mentally ill, and would frequently assault the officers, forcing him into a padded cell. He spat insults and racial epithets, flashing his yellowed teeth and horribly casual hate.

Theater owners have been treated to their first glimpse of Amazon MGM Studios’ year-end holiday romp Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. Red One: Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson’s holiday action comedy to bring cheer to theaters next year
Next year’s holiday season is already looking merry and bright at the box office as Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ holiday action comedy, Red One, plans on riding a sleigh into cinemas. The Amazon MGM and Seven Bucks Christmas film is still spreading holiday cheer on Prime Video, but the project’s global theatrical debut happens on November 15, 2024.
Red One’s move to theaters is a strategy to take advantage of the holiday box office rush. Families love to bundle up the family for a trip to cinemas, and that Thanksgiving window is almost as tasty as a lovingly cooked butterball turkey. Other films will premiere in theaters around the holidays, but so far, Robert De Niro’s mobster film Alto Knights and Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever occupy the holiday stretch.

Exclusive, Updated: The latter half of the 2024 theatrical release schedule just got a shot of testosterone as Amazon MGM Studios and Seven Bucks’ epic Christmas action comedy Red One just set an exclusive global theatrical release for Nov. 15, 2024.
Similar to other committed Amazon MGM theatrical titles of late, i.e. Air and Saltburn, Red One will have a theatrical window before streaming on its ultimate home, which is Prime Video.
By releasing Red One theatrically on November 15, Amazon MGM Studios is looking to take advantage of the traditionally lucrative holiday corridor before Thanksgiving. Rival wide releases on Nov. 15 include Warner Bros. Robert De Niro mobster movie, Alto Knights and Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. On Dec. 15, 1995, TriStar unveiled the Robin Williams starrer Jumanji in theaters, where it would go on to gross $262 million globally and eventually kickstart a franchise. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Call it “Game Story.”
Based on a 1981 book by children’s author and illustrator Chris Van Allsburg, Jumanji tells the story of a mysterious board game with a treacherous mind of its own; where every roll of the dice carries considerable consequences.
The filmed result is a raucous, noisy affair jam-packed with special effects, amusing character turns and some truly surreal sight gags.
And while all the parts never seem to form a cohesive whole and the rampaging critters may be a little intense for younger viewers, Jumanji holds enough distractions along the way to keep audiences occupied.
Boxoffice results should be respectable but TriStar probably shouldn’t expect a stampede.
Young Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce play Judy and Peter,...

As a result, the panel threw out guesses including Kim Zolciak, Bonnie Hunt and Janice Dickinson. But, in the end, Hibiscus was unmasked to reveal… Luann de Lesseps.

As a result, the panel threw out guesses including Kim Zolciak, Bonnie Hunt and Janice Dickinson. But, in the end, Hibiscus was unmasked to reveal… Luann de Lesseps.
De Lesseps is of course best known for being one of...

Meg Ryan and David Duchovny swung by “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Friday to talk all things rom-coms — including their new one together, “What Happens Later.”
Kelly Clarkson was shocked to find herself needing to remind Duchovny of a movie he starred in over 20 years ago, because it happened to be one of her favorites of the genre: “What!”
“So I have to say, you’re both in rom-coms that are so massively popular that people love and adore,” Clarkson began before getting cut off by the actor.
“But I’m not, she is,” Duchovny said, pointing to Ryan.
“You are!” Ryan responded, assuringly.
“‘Return to Me’ is like, one of my favorite… what?” Clarkson said in visible disbelief.
“Ok!” Duchovny said, conceding that he had, in fact, starred in a romantic comedy.

Some movies build their premise around a true story and make it the central focus of their marketing. Ripped-from-the-headlines cinema is a genre all its own, and it has a dedicated fan base waiting for a more dramatic telling of real-life events. Other stories, however, aren’t so clearly connected to reality, leaving viewers wondering if what they watched was mined from the depths of the writer’s mind or taken from a true-to-life inspiration. In the case of 2003’s Cheaper by the Dozen, there’s a bit of both.
‘Cheaper by the Dozen’ was a remake
In 2003, Cheaper by the Dozen hit theaters. The film’s starring cast included comedy dynamo Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt, Hilary Duff, and Piper Perabo.

Marisa Tomei was more than reluctant to shed her locks for 1994 film “Only You.”
Tomei, who plays a hopeless romantic determined to find her soulmate, a man identified by her Ouija board when she was a teen, had a major fashion moment onscreen with a stylish bob haircut, starting a trend upon the film’s release in 1994. Robert Downey Jr., Bonnie Hunt, and Billy Zane co-star in the beloved rom-com.
Emmy-winning costume designer Nicoletta Ercole, who also worked on fellow Italy-set productions like “Letters to Juliet,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” and “My House in Umbria,” recently told IndieWire that Tomei had to be convinced to change up her style.
“Marisa, at the beginning, she arrived right after she won [the Oscar] for ‘My Cousin Vinny.’ She had very long hair,” Ercole explained. “I said, ‘Why can’t you cut it? Like this, it’s normal. It’s nothing special.'”

Sometimes, the people who make the biggest difference aren’t the ones who grab the spotlight. In “Snoopy Presents: One-of-a-Kind Marcie,” we get to see firsthand how our lovable introvert, Marcie, makes a monumental difference from behind the scenes for both her friends and her community. To train for the school golf championship, Marcie assists Peppermint Patty as her caddie, offering thoughtful and deliberate advice to help her win. Meanwhile, after coming up with brilliant solutions to her classmates’ problems – from hallway traffic jams to lunchtime pizza shortages – Marcie is unexpectedly elected as class president … a role she never wanted.
Suddenly thrust into the spotlight, Marcie struggles to cope with the expectations of her new job and retreats as far from the public eye as possible. As the golf championship begins, Marcie is still in hiding and Peppermint Patty is forced to tee off with Charlie Brown filling in as her caddie.

Author Chris Van Allsburg brought "Jumanji" into the pop culture zeitgeist back in 1981. The children's book imagined an enchanted board game that transported the dangers of the jungle into the suburban world. A hungry lion, a stampede of rhinos, and a monsoon are just some of the threats that emerge from the game, putting kids smack dab in the middle of a frightening adventure.
"Jumanji" is a favorite among several generations of children, and part of that comes from the blockbuster movie adaptation starring Robin Williams (with his improv skills in check), Bonnie Hunt, and a young Kirsten Dunst back in 1995. The film became quite a sensation on the big screen, making over $262 million at the worldwide box office, and it made the titular game truly larger than life. If you've ever watched "Jumanji" and wished you could have your own version of the board game that has seemingly been circulating for decades,...

Apple TV+ today released the trailer for season two of ‘Harriet the Spy’, based on the iconic children’s novel chronicling the coming-of-age adventures of the irrepressible Harriet M Welsch, premiering on May 5, 2023. Produced by The Jim Henson Company, the animated series stars Golden Globe nominee Beanie Feldstein as Harriet, a fiercely independent and adventurous 11-year-old girl, alongside Emmy Award winner Jane Lynch as Ole Golly, Harriet’s larger-than-life, no-nonsense nanny.
“Harriet the Spy” follows the outspoken and perpetually curious 11-year-old Harriet M Welsch. More than anything, Harriet wants to be a writer, and in order to be a good writer, she’ll need to know everything. And to know everything means she’ll need to spy … on everyone! This season, follow Harriet as she navigates letting go, growing up, and celebrating the gift of today.

According to various online biographies, director Jon Favreau graduated high school in 1984 and attended Queens College for only three years before dropping out in 1987. As he recently said on an episode of the "Smartless" podcast, he was immediately offered a high-paying job at the investment firm Bear Stearns, hooked up with the gig by a friend's dad. Given Favreau's age, this would definitely be considered "selling out" at the time. The easily earned, large-salary job was once something young aspiring artists eschewed, preferring a hard-earned, low-money career in the arts. Favreau was bitten by the acting bug at a young age and always had his sights turned on performance.
After about a year at Bear Stearns, Favreau quit. It seems he just barely missed Black Monday. It also seemed that he hated it. After another brief try at college, Favreau dropped out again, this time for good, and drove out...

Exclusive: Apple TV+ has opted not to renew for a second season Amber Brown, its single-camera kids/family comedy series based on the bestselling books by Paula Danziger, which is headlined by Sarah Drew and child actor Carsyn Rose. The news comes more than eight months after the series’ 10-episode first season was released on July 29. I hear the options on the cast have lapsed.
The Boat Rocker-produced Amber Brown, which also stars Darin Brooks and newcomer Liliana Inouye, was written and directed by Bonnie Hunt, who also served as executive producer and showrunner.
The series stars Rose as the title character, an everykid who is going through what children of divorced partners experience, and making sense of her new family dynamic through her sketches and video diary. Drew plays Amber’s mother; Brooks plays Sarah’s boyfriend, Max; Inouye plays Amber’s friend Brandi Colwin.

It’s been almost nine years since the death of actor and comedian Robin Williams shook the entertainment world to its core.
The star of films including Mrs Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting and Night at the Museum was 63 when he died on 11 August 2014.
Despite the time that has passed, anecdotes of the countless good deeds he did for others continue to be shared, most recently when Nathan Lane revealed how Williams protected him during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
One of Williams’ most popular films was Jumanji, the 1995 blockbuster co-starring Bonnie Hunt and Jonathan Hyde.
It also featured Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce, who were child stars at the time. In 2020, celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary, Pierce revealed how Williams once stepped in to defend him from over-demanding producers.
Jumanji followed two children whose worlds collides with Williams’s Alan Parrish, who got sucked into the magical board game as a young boy.

It has been nearly a decade since the death of iconic comedian Robin Williams. But he is still lovingly remembered by fans all over the world for his kindness and generosity. Williams was much more than just a comic genius and a gifted actor. He was also a genuinely thoughtful human being as well.

The Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) were the big winners at last night's Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards. The filmmaking duo took home the top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film, for "Everything Everywhere All At Once" — beating out directing legend Steven Spielberg ("The Fabelmans"), as well as Joseph Kosinski's massive aerial action film "Maverick," Todd Field's critical darling "Tár," and Martin McDonagh's black comedy "The Banshees of Inisherin."
These days, the Daniels seem to embody their hit film, being everything, everywhere, all at once. The Michelle Yeoh-led maximalist action-comedy has something for everyone, and is deeply, satisfyingly, weird. It topped many best-of lists (it was my #1 pick for Best Films of 2022) and is a favorite to take home the Academy Award for Best Picture. Now with a DGA Award under their belts, the odds of that happening are better than ever.

With less than a month to go before the Oscars, every award show counts. The next few weeks will see all of the major Hollywood guilds give out their annual awards, ensuring that each department gets its moment in the spotlight. Tonight, directors took center stage as Hollywood convened at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the Directors Guild of America Awards.
The ceremony honored outstanding achievement in both film and television directing, and the former category is often seen as predicting the Best Director winner at the Academy Awards. Four of the five Best Director nominees competed in the Feature Film category tonight: Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”), Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Todd Field (“TÁR”), and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund is not nominated, with “Top Gun: Maverick” helmer Joseph Kosinski taking his place.

2022, we aren't quite done with you yet. Award season has officially rolled into town, meaning it's time to reflect on the highest highs of last year as the industry awards (or snubs) some of the most beloved titles across film and TV. The latest awards lineup comes courtesy of the Directors Guild of America, which today announced the nominees across seven television categories.
Last year, the DGA television awards were largely dominated by "Succession" — as was every other TV-based awards show. But in its absence, both new and old titles have stepped up to vie for the spotlight. For drama series, the nominations went to Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Vince Gilligan, ("Better Call Saul"), Sam Levinson, ("Euphoria"), Aoife McArdle ("Severance"), and Ben Stiller ("Severance").
Elsewhere, the DGAs are rightfully recognizing two of last year's best half-hours of television: the intense single-shot episode of "The Bear" and the impeccable sixth episode of "Barry" season 3. Hilariously,...

At last year’s DGA television awards, “Succession” dominated the drama series category with all five of the nominees. This year, with that HBO series on hiatus, the nominees went to Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Vince Gilligan (“Better Call Saul”), Sam Levinson (“Euphoria”), and Aoiff McArdle and Ben Stiller for two separate episodes of “Severance.”
In the comedy series category, Tim Burton scored his first ever career DGA nomination, for “Wednesday.” Burton was joined by Bill Hader (“Barry”), Amy Sherman-Palladino (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christopher Storer (“The Bear”), and Mike White (“The White Lotus”).

Christmas-themed properties are lucrative. It has been a long-running joke that crooner Michael Bublé only surfaces during the holidays when his Christmas songs make regular rotations, and Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas has found recent infamous popularity. Enough to have the pop diva declare herself “Queen of Christmas.” Recently, with films like Violent Night and The Mean One, crossing Christmas with violence and action looks to turn traditional classics on its side.
One such film audiences have to look forward to for the next holiday season is the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans yule-tide action film Red One. Johnson, ever the serial promoter, has recently posted pictures via his Twitter of some behind-the-scenes photos, which feature a scene of him riding a large vehicle and running down a platform before the environment has been added. In his tweet, the Black Adam star describes the film as “Jumanji...
