“Guy has an incredibly lively mind,” says “The Gentlemen” editor Matt Platts-Mills about the show’s creator, Guy Ritchie. “He won’t rest until he’s absolutely sure that he’s hit everything that’s possible with the scene, and that’s across everything. And he kind of develops ideas as he watches it. It’s kind of a ride in itself.” Watch our video interview above.
Platts-Mills edited three episodes of the Netflix comedy series: “An Unsympathetic Gentleman,” “All Eventualities” and the season finale, “The Gospel According to Bobby Glass.” The eight-episode thrill-ride stars Theo James as Edward Horniman, who has unexpectedly inherited an estate of 15,000 acres and the title of Duke of Halstead from his deceased father. Unbeknownst to Horniman, it’s also home to a massive weed empire.

"Alien 3" remains a fascinating entry within one of sci-fi's most enduring franchises. While both Ridley Scott's original "Alien" and James Cameron's "Aliens" remain unimpeachable classics, the third entry is a bit more divisive. It was director David Fincher's feature debut and the end result is a bit messy, in no small part thanks to studio interference. The version we got sees Sigourney Weaver's Ripley in a space prison, once again facing off against a Xenomorph. But director Renny Harlin, of "Deep Blue Sea" and "Cliffhanger" fame, had a radically different idea for the film when he was attached, and sadly, that version never came to fruition.
"I always thought that I had a good idea," Harlin said recently in an interview with /Film's Jacob Hall in honor of his upcoming film "The Strangers: Chapter 1," which is the first part of a whole new trilogy.

Do you remember where you were 25 years ago when Samuel L. Jackson's character in "Deep Blue Sea" was shockingly eaten by a shark in the middle of his impassioned speech? I unfortunately didn't see it in theaters, but when I rented the DVD from Blockbuster, I remember practically leaping off my couch when that big moment happened. It's one of the most surprising movie moments of the past 30 years -- and not only was that jaw-dropping plot beat not in the original script, but once it made its way into the movie, Warner Bros. wanted to use it in the trailers. Thankfully, director Renny Harlin put his foot down and won that fight against the studio.
Timed to the release of his new film, "The Strangers: Chapter 1," we spoke with Harlin in a career-spanning interview, and naturally, we had to ask about the big "Deep Blue Sea" death, the most memorable imagery from his chaotic,...

If you’re still in Shōgun withdrawal, you can look forward to Peacock’s own take on a lavish historical epic this summer. Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) is behind the small-screen adaptation of Those About to Die, Daniel P. Mannix’s book of the same name, which was also the inspiration for Ridley Scott and David Franzioni’s Gladiator.
This new period drama will come racing to our screens on July 18, with the decline of the Roman Empire as its backdrop. Peacock released a teaser for the series, starring Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hughes, and Iwan Rheon, among others, last month. And the streamer is now moving full speed ahead on promo with new images, including closer looks at the Roman Emperor Flavius Vespasian (Hopkins), who founded the Flavian dynasty; Titus (Hughes), Flavius’ son and successor; and games master Tenax.

How on earth did the makers of The Silent Sea create a crash landing on the moon and make lunar water look so ominous that we had to ask NASA for details? What exactly is CGI and what’s real life? These trade secrets lie with Korean production company Westworld — but like Bae Doona’s Dr. Song, we’re determined to get to the bottom of it.
Founded in 2018, Westworld offers everything from storyboards and concept design to on-set supervision and digital creature development. Fans of Korean television may remember their work on Scripting Your Destiny as well as the Netflix series Sweet Homeand Mystic Pop-up Bar.
For The Silent Sea, Westworld VFX supervisor Kim Shin-chul drew inspiration from blockbuster films Ad Astra and Prometheus, as well as Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise. And to visually reproduce the characteristics and properties of the moon’s surface, the team closely...

The so-called Xenomorph is one of the greatest monsters in movie history. The brainchild of Swiss artist H.R. Giger, the Star Beast combines biological and mechanical elements, blending genders in a way that underscores the themes of pregnancy and violation in Alien.
But before Giger and director Ridley Scott brought the Xenomorph to life in 1979, the alien had a very different trial run. Before crafting the initial treatment and script that would become the basis of Alien, writer Dan O’Bannon worked on another sci-fi project, alongside a fellow student at the University of Southern California film school. That student was John Carpenter, and while he and O’Bannon would go on to make some of the most influential horror films of all time, their first movie Dark Star has a very different monster.

The Marvel vs. DC movie debate has been going on for a long time. Sometimes, even the actors and directors share their views on such matters. Years ago, Zack Snyder made a remark on MCU movies, especially Ant-Man and the Wasp. The superhero film, starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michael Pena, was released in 2015. At that time, Snyder was working on his DC movie, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Batman V Superman starred Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill. In an interview, Zack Snyder was asked his views on Marvel movies and the director took a potshot at Ant-Man. The Rebel Moon director told The Daily Beast, “I feel like Batman and Superman are transcendent of superhero movies in a way, because they’re Batman and Superman. Paul Schrader has spoken with Kevin Spacey about the actor starring in a Frank Sinatra biopic, despite multiple allegations still flanking the actor. Spacey is facing a civil trial in the U.K. in 2025 over allegations for which he was acquitted there in a criminal court last year. A new U.K. docuseries airing on Channel 4 also features claims of sexual offenses by the actor from 10 men.
Writer/director Schrader told Variety that he has been in contact with Spacey about him portraying an elderly Sinatra for a film.
“Cancel culture won’t let him go,” Schrader said of Spacey, citing that the actor was acquitted of sexually assaulting four men in 2023. “He’s reading a book on how Charlie Chaplin was canceled.”
Schrader added of the potential biopic, “I would not use Kevin if he had been convicted. But he was not convicted.”

Apple has put out some of the most innovative and memorable commercials ever. We think of the iconic 1984 ad and the early iPod spots with silhouetted music lovers dancing to “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” Now, Apple has done the exact opposite of those, inadvertently pushing people away from the product.
Apple CEO Tim Cook posted the ad – titled “Crush” – on X this week, accompanying it with: “Meet the new iPad Pro: the thinnest product we’ve ever created, the most advanced display we’ve ever produced, with the incredible power of the M4 chip. Just imagine all the things it’ll be used to create.” The ad itself features a wealth of human achievements – from music to mathematics – being crushed in a hydraulic press, ultimately creating the new iPad Pro. That it is set to Sonny and Cher’s “All I Ever Need Is You” definitely has meaning.

It seems at first like a brilliant, if unsubtle, piece of dystopian satire: countless symbols of human creativity — books, musical instruments, artworks, arcade games — crowded onto a platform and slowly, painfully, sadistically pancaked between the massive metal jaws of a machine. An upright piano splinters and cracks. Paint gushes like blood. With its bleak industrial aesthetic, the clip mirrors the look — but inverts the point — of one of the most famous advertisements in television history: Ridley Scott’s 1984 spot for Apple, in which a colorfully dressed female Olympian tosses a hammer into a screen and shatters the televised face of an Orwellian Big Brother, breaking his authoritarian grip on society. With the release of the new Macintosh computer, the ad concluded, “You’ll see why 1984 won’t be like 1984,” suggesting that personal computing was a force of liberation.
One almost expects the new clip, titled “Crush,” to end with a rueful answer to that slogan,...

We can’t stop here! This is Bear Country! While Russell Crowe passes the Gladiator torch to Paul Mescal for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, the Oscar-winning actor is getting behind the bar for Derrick Borte’s upcoming action-thriller Bear Country. The project marks another collaboration between Crowe and Borte after teaming up for Unhinged, a thriller starring Crowe as an unstable man obsessed with a woman after a spat of road rage.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Bear Country finds Crowe playing an aging but redoubtable club owner, Manco Kapak, whom a masked gunman robs. When the robbery sidelines his retirement plans and his girlfriend grows distant, his aspirations to live a quiet life shatter like glass breaking against a hardwood floor. As cartel bosses harass Manco and a young status seeker aims to purchase the club, Kapak must decide how to show them who the boss is.

Even though neither 1982's Blade Runner nor 2017's Blade Runner 2049 moved the needle much in terms of box office, both are respected cult classics (especially the original). And the world originally woven by Ridley Scott from the story by Phillip K. Dick is one that studios keep looking to re-visit. The latest incarnation, live-action Prime Video series Blade Runner 2099 is gearing up to shoot this year and has cast Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh in a lead role.
With Scott on board as an executive producer and actual show-running duties falling to Silka Luisa, the show brings the story (as the title suggests) forward to 2099.
Prime Video has not officially announced any story details for the show, though scooper Daniel Richtman dug this up online (prepare your grain of salt accordingly until this is confirmed): "In Los Angeles 2099, Cora lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt numerous identities.

Many Marvel fans would love to see how original Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson would have made the poorly executed second film. Derrickson recently shared a tweet that highlighted the bad reviews against Harrison Ford’s 1982 film Blade Runner. He was among the few who loved the theatrical version and posted the tweet as his voice against the critical opinion. However, he later deleted the tweet and has a good explanation as to why he did it.
Scott Derrickson loved the theatrical cut of Harrison Ford’s Blade Runner
Blade Runner‘s theatrical version was not everyone’s favorite and critics bashed the film left and right. However, the criticism forced director Ridley Scott to come out with a Director’s Cut and later a much better Final Cut of the film.

The history of science fiction movies knows the breakthrough, made by Ridley Scott in 1982 with his Blade Runner, a dystopian tale about the revolt of the human-like replicants. This Harrison Ford-starring film influenced a great number of filmmakers, becoming one of the most cultish sci-fi features of all time.
Among the inspired ones was the Dune director Denis Villeneuve, who was so in love with Ridley Scott’s movie that even decided to make a sequel of it. Back in 2017, the world saw his Blade Runner 2049, where Ford reprised his iconic role alongside the new lead, Ryan Gosling, who starred as the young police officer, hunting rogue replicants.
Despite the fact that the movie was quite disappointing at the box office, grossing just $267.5 million worldwide against a production budget of $150–185 million, over the course of 7 years it has gained enormous hype and been recognized as a masterpiece.

In case you did not know, a Blade Runner series is in the works and has been shooting since April. Titled Blade Runner 2099, the series was revealed to be in the works in 2021, when Ridley Scott himself confirmed that a pilot and the series’ bible (a reference book for a series with relevant plot and character data) had been written. The series was officially announced in 2022 when the title was also revealed. Filming was set to begin in 2023 but was postponed to April 2024 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which paralyzed the entertainment industry for a longer period of time. Now, knowing that the series is currently being filmed, we can also confirm that we have some exciting casting updates.
The Blade Runner franchise wasn’t a franchise initially. It started off as a standalone movie directed by Scott, which starred Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer in the main roles.

Strikes and delays have reportedly seen the budget on Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski’s Formula 1 movie race past the $300m mark.
If a new report’s accurate, then Apple Studios is in the process of spending a quite sinister amount of money on its forthcoming Formula 1 movie.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt, the film doesn’t currently have an official title – the word was that it was called Apex, also the name of a 2021 Bruce Willis action flick, though that hasn’t been confirmed so far.
What it does have, though, is an absolutely enormous budget; according to Puck, as picked up by World of Reel, the spend so far has breached the $300m mark.
The distribution rights to the movie were snapped up by Apple in 2022, with the company no doubt attracted by the pairing of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Kosinski, who’d...

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh has joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 sequel series, currently filming in Prague.
Already a veteran of action and science fiction genres, Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh has joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s limited TV series, Blade Runner 2099.
Currently, that’s about all we know. Even Deadline, which first published the news, doesn’t know anything useful about the character Yeoh will play or what the series will be about. Sorry about that.
The series has been in development for quite a while, though, given that it’s a sequel to 2017’s Blade Runner 2049 (itself a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner), and there’s still nothing to watch roughly seven years on.
Last year’s Hollywood strikes haven’t helped matters. At one point, Amazon Studios was gearing up for production in Northern Ireland, with...

Michelle Yeoh is set to lead Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099, which will serve as a sequel to both Ridley Scott's original and Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049.
The first plot details for the show have also found their way online (via Daniel Richtman), and the brief synopsis outlines the basic premise of the sci-fi spin-off series.
As previously rumored, the show will be female-led, with Cora (possibly a former Blade Runner) joining forces with a Replicant named Olwen (Yeoh).
"In Los Angeles 2099, Cora lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt numerous identities. To secure a stable future for her brother, she assumes one final identity and is forced to partner with Olwen, a Replicant who’s confronting the end of her life. The two are pulled into a widening conspiracy that poses an existential threat to a city that’s fighting to be reborn.

On the indie side of filmmaking life, Sean Price Williams has seen it all. He’s worked with the Safdies, Alex Ross Perry, Nathan Silver, Robert Green, and Athina Rachel Tsangari, and often more than once. He’s the premier chronicler of New York City independent movies behind the camera, typically shooting on celluloid, and bringing surreal, gritty poetry to character-driven stories that feel on the ground like portraits of versions of ourselves.
One of the most unabashedly movie-loving cinematographers working today, Williams last year moved to directing for the sprawling, scratchy-edged tale of East Coast youth, “The Sweet East,” which remains in theaters and features stars like Jacob Elordi, Simon Rex, Jeremy O. Harris, and Ayo Edebiri.
But even more recently than that directorial debut, he released a “1000 Movies” book via Metrograph Editions, a simple, unadorned paperback that offers, rather than commentary, pages listing his favorite essential films and...

Back in 2000, director Ridley Scott took us back to 180 Ad for Gladiator, which told the story of Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe), who is favored by Emperor Marcus Aurelius to be his successor because his own son, Commodus, is unfit to rule. Commodus disagrees, so he murders his father, has Maximus arrested, and has Maximus’s wife and son killed. While Commodus establishes himself as the new emperor, Maximus escapes from captivity – only to be captured again, this time by slavers who sell him off to become a gladiator. Soon he’s fighting in front of Commodus in Rome’s Colosseum… and it all builds up to Commodus challenging Maximus to a duel. Gladiator was a major box office success and racked up multiple Academy Award wins, including Best Picture. So there was already talk of a sequel in 2001, but it ended up taking more than...

One of the biggest queens in all sci-fi is returning to the genre she helped legitimize. As much as fans (rightfully) heap praise on icons such as Sigourney Weaver, Carrie Fisher, and Linda Hamilton, may we never sleep on what Michelle Yeoh has done for science-fiction storytelling over the years. She certainly made her mark in Danny Boyle's "Sunshine," while going above and beyond in recent efforts like "Star Trek: Discovery," "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," and, of course, "Everything Everywhere All At Once."
Now, she's getting ready to do her thing all over again in "Blade Runner 2099," a sequel series long in the works that finally seems to be inching closer to reality. Vin Diesel will begin production on the fourth installment of the Riddick franchise, Riddick: Furya, on August 26. The film will be shot in Germany, Spain, and the UK.
This follow-up to the sci-fi films Pitch Black (2000), The Chronicles of Riddick (2004), and Riddick (2013) reunites Diesel with writer and director David Twohy. Diesel will reprise his role as the anti-hero Richard B. Riddick, a dangerous escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the galaxy.
In Riddick: Furya, Riddick finally returns to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there, he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. Some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.

Excitement Builds at CinemaCon: Gladiator II Unleashed Fans and critics alike are abuzz after the revelation of Gladiator II at CinemaCon. With Paramount introducing a sequel that extends the dramatic and visual ethos of its predecessor, expectations are sky high. When Universal decided to jump on the first weekend of May, a slot normally taken up by Marvel’s popular superhero movies, they were hoping the combo of “Barbenheimer” stars, Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, would make “The Fall Guy” a huge early summer hit. That’s not what happened. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Going into the weekend, “The Fall Guy” had everything going for it, from two of the biggest Oscar-nominated stars from 2023’s biggest blockbusters – one who recently hosted “Saturday Night Live” to great success – plus reviews had been great going back to its premiere at the SXSW Film and TV Festival. Movie fans love to discover behind-the-scenes tidbits about their favorite films, and there are few movie facts more exciting than an improvised line or scene. Stories of improvisation remind us that filmmaking is a collaborative, creative process, and that sometimes the most unexpected ideas make the biggest impact.
Writers and directors lay the foundation and set the scene, while it's up to actors to make the characters their own. Take one of the most classic lines in "The Godfather," a perfect example of improvisation upon a strong foundation. The phrase "leave the gun," was written in the script, but actor Richard Castellano added the line "take the cannoli," turning it into the iconic catchphrase it is today. Clearly, Francis Ford Coppola's decision to keep that ad-lib in the final cut was the right one.
