Whitney Peak, one of the leads of the recent Gossip Girl reboot, has signed on to star opposite Phoebe Dyvenor in Sony Pictures’ untitled shark thriller.
Tommy Wirkola, who last helmed the David Harbour-starring Christmas action movie Violent Night, is helming the feature that will begin shooting in Melbourne in July.
Plot details are being kept in the cage but it is said to revolve around a community that has to deal with shark attacks during a hurricane.
Adam McKay and Kevin Messick, who count Don’t Look Up and The Big Short, amongst their output, are producing the project via their HyperObject Industries.
On the Gossip Girl reboots, the Ugandan-born, Canadian-raised Peak played Zoya Lott, the newcomer to the machinations of the chi-chi Manhattan school at where a lot of the stories were set. She also starred opposite Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimi in Hocus Pocus 2,...

Exclusive: Susan Sarandon (Maybe I Do), William H. Macy (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) and Marcia Cross (You) have signed on to star in Exit Right, a new indie that veteran documentary filmmaker Thomas A. Morgan will direct from his own script for the London-based Garrick Street Productions and Square Zero Films.
Marking Morgan’s narrative debut, the film centers on Jan Randall (Sarandon), whose brain — affected with inoperable cancer — makes her deeply afraid of being trapped inside. Refusing to take medications that would reduce her final days to a hospital bed, she moves into a tent in her backyard. Determined to give her one last gift, her husband John courageously takes her on a trip around the world — on foot, in their own hometown, for what is truly the trip of a lifetime.

George Maksian, who spent 44 years as a film and TV columnist for the New York Daily News at a time when it had the largest circulation in the U.S., died at 94 on May 23. No cause was given.
Working out of the newspaper’s former home on E. 42nd St. in Manhattan, Maksian covered the celebrity beat and was widely syndicated.
His interview list included Ed Sullivan, Howard Stern, Johnny Carson, Barbara Walters, David Letterman and Bette Midler.
But Maksian held a special reverence for Mike Connors of TV’s Mannix, a fellow Armenian-American. Both were born of parents who escaped the Armenian genocide.
Maksian once said sportscaster Howard Cosell wrote a four-page letter to the editors complaining about his boxing coverage.

Sarah Silverman appeared on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast this week and took the opportunity to reflect on why she dropped her formative “Sarah Silverman” character amid the political rise of Donald Trump. She explained she decided to move on from the “arrogant ignorant” character she previously embodied for more complex reasons than audiences “not laughing at my racist jokes anymore.”
“It wasn’t really a conscious, ‘Hey, that stuff doesn’t work, so I’m going to go a different way,'” Silverman told Duchovny. “I think I just very naturally started changing.

Lindsay Lohan has gained quite a reputation in Hollywood. While she has been entering the limelight in positive ways in recent years, there was a time when this was not the case. After her Mean Girls fame, she was involved in quite a few controversies that tarnished her image in more ways than one.
Lindsay Lohan in Mean Girls | Paramount Pictures
Before starring in the classic Rachel McAdams film, Lohan was regarded as a Hollywood sweetheart. This is why it is quite interesting to find out that she was almost sued by an Oscar-nominated actress after she decided to go back on a commitment.
During the filming of Bette Midler’s autobiographical sitcom, Bette Lohan walked away from the project, causing it to come undone, and the Hollywood legend looks back in regret.

Recently, I watched the trailer for Transformers One, the Cybertron-set sequel about the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Every time I see that trailer attached to whatever movie, an unenthusiasm washes over. It’s mainly a byproduct of Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry’s casting as pre-Adam’s-apple-dropped versions of their respective characters. And make no mistake, they did not change their voices at all for these roles.
It’s not just Transformers One that’s the butt of this phenomenon though. Nearly every animated movie emphasizes a celebrity voice cast as part of its marketing. How else can you explain the overexposure of Chris Pratt as this weekend’s Garfield and last year’s Super Mario? It’s even standard day practice now for the character poster to also feature an actor’s name above the animation design, a la “Zendaya is Meechee.” This exists, presumably, to lure adults into the theater.

When Quinta Brunson first introduced second grade teacher Janine Teagues in season one of Abbott Elementary, she purposely had the character dress in awkward clothing, from frumpy sweaters paired with chunky belts to long maxi skirts with sneakers. She barely wore makeup and didn’t pay much attention to her hair.
But in season three, as Teagues takes a break from teaching to work at the Philadelphia school district, viewers see her forge ahead: She’s in tailored suits, fitted blazers and heels. She’s stepped up her makeup game and her curls are defined. And the middle part in her hair drives the point home: This is her glow up.
It’s something Brunson has been planning from day one.
“I always wanted this evolution for Janine,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I always joke that [Janine] watched some YouTube videos over the summer. She learned a quick makeup tutorial.

When Andrew Karpen wants to convince a filmmaker to let him release their movie, he doesn’t blow them away by offering more and more money. For one thing, Bleecker Street, the indie studio he founded in 2014, doesn’t have the financial firepower of an Apple or a Netflix.
“Our pitch is always centered around the kind of experience that they will have with us, knowing that we will be collaborative and transparent,” Karpen says. “I always say, ‘This is not a campaign where you will just be emailed the final poster and trailer and given two tickets to the premiere.’”
And over nearly 70 films, that openness has kept Karpen and his small but mighty staff in the game. While Bleecker is celebrating its 10th anniversary, many of its competitors haven’t managed to survive in a business that’s only become more treacherous to navigate. Several of Bleecker’s contemporaries,...

After years of portraying fantastical creatures, I'm glad Doug Jones finally felt comfortable enough to appear as his regular self in "The Shape of Water." While his acting career began in the late 1980s, it wasn't until the '90s that the tall, lanky maestro of disguise found his niche performing in prosthetics. His minor role as "Thin Clown" in "Batman Returns" aside, though, it was Jones' turn as William "Billy" Butcherson in director Kenny Ortega's cult 1993 fantasy comedy "Hocus Pocus" that put the actor -- who recently played the Kelpien Starfleet officer Saru on "Star Trek: Discovery" -- squarely on the map.
Billy, as we come to learn, is a ponytailed gentleman from the 17th century who was poisoned by the witch Winifred Sanderson (Bette Midler). She also proceeded to stitch his shut mouth to keep him quiet, even in death. Why so harsh? "Hocus Pocus" implies that...

Exclusive: On April 18th of this year, at a parole board hearing in New Hampshire, convicted murderer James Parker was granted parole for his role in the brutal 2001 stabbing murders of Half and Suzanne Zantop, a pair of married Dartmouth professors. After acquiring rights to Judgment Ridge, a work of nonfiction detailing the chilly story of those murders, producers Randy and Steven Toll have enlisted Matthew Gentile (American Murderer) to direct a feature adaptation from his own script.

Brad Pitt’s Formula One Movie Budget Surpasses $300 Million, Faces Distribution Hurdles. (Photo Credit – IMDb)
News reports suggest that the budget for Brad Pitt‘s Formula One movie has surpassed $300 million, potentially making it one of the most expensive films ever made. The movie has faced challenges in finding a distributor and release date. Factors contributing to the budget increase include the 118-day SAG-AFTRA strike delaying filming, and the use of real actors in genuine race cars, which require extensive training and safety measures, driving up costs. Brad Pitt was seen piloting a modified Formula Two car during the British Prix weekend.

During a recent appearance on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast, Legendary actress Bette Midler opened up about her experience filming the shelved sitcom titled “Bette,” calling it a “big mistake” in her storied career. The actress even confessed she should have sued Lindsy Lohan for leaving the project after the pilot.
The show, created by Jeffrey Lane on CBS, ran from October 2000 through March 2001 before it was cancelled after 16 episodes. In the show, the Hocus Pocus actress played a version of herself, with Kevin Dunn portraying her husband and Lindsay Lohan playing her daughter Rose in the pilot.
Bette Midler recalled things starting to crumble after Lohan exited the series after shooting the pilot. Midler told Duchovny, “After the pilot, Lindsay Lohan decided she didn’t want to do it or had other fish to fry.

Lindsay Lohan has continued to stay in the spotlight thanks to her acting career, which kickstarted as a child actress in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Following her successful career as a child actress, she became a teen icon with her work in Mean Girls. After pursuing her music career for a while, she continued to stay in the limelight, be it for personal reasons or her comeback attempts.

Venerable actor Bette Midler says that her partially-autobiographical 2000 sitcom “Bette” represented a series of mistakes.
Among the errors, was her decision not to sue Lindsay Lohan, who appeared as her daughter in the pilot episode, but who did not continue in the following 16 episodes which broadcast on CBS in the U.S.
Midler unpacked her regrets on “Fail Better,” a podcast hosted by fellow star David Duchovny. “’Bette.’ A big, big mistake. I think for several reasons,” Midler said.
She suggested that Lohan’s early exit from “Bette” may have contributed to its failure. “Lindsay Lohan was cast as my daughter in the pilot. Well, after the pilot, Lindsay Lohan decided she didn’t want to do it. Or she had other fish to fry. So, Lindsay Lohan left the building. And I said, well, now what do you do?”
At the time, Lohan had recently enjoyed success in “Parent Trap.

Bette Midler is not holding back her thoughts on calling out her blunders from the past, and one of those is the 2000 sitcom Bette.
Midler recently recalled her stint as a sitcom star and called that experience a “mistake.” She also regretted not suing Lindsay Lohan after she dropped out of the show following the pilot.
“I did a television show, Bette. Does it get any more generic than that? A big, big, big mistake,” Midler said on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast. “I think for several reasons. It was the wrong motivation. It was a part of the media I simply did not understand. I watched it. I appreciated it. I enjoyed it, But I didn’t know what it meant to make it.”
She continued, “I had made theatrical live events. I had made films. I had made variety television shows. I had been on talk shows.

Bette Midler took a moment to reflect on her career missteps this week, opening up about how her 2000 sitcom, Bette, went awry.
“I did a television show, does it get any more generic than that?” Midler told David Duchovny on this week’s installment of his Fail Better with David Duchovny podcast from Lemonade Media. When Duchovny asked the singer to elaborate, Midler said: “It was for the wrong motivation, and it was a part of the media I simply did not understand.”
Bette aired its first and only season from 2000 to 2001 on CBS. It saw Midler playing herself in a semi-satirized version of her life. Midler said that she found herself in over her head when it came to producing a sitcom.

The Masked Singer panel is convinced there’s a legendary diva on the stage in Season 11, but are they right? The panelists—Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, and Rita Ora—put the clues together about Miss Cleocatra in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the April 24 episode. Following another performance and a clue, Miss Cleocatra reveals, “The Supremes aren’t just on my playlist. They’re a part of my career.” Ora suggests she’s “from the same era as the Supremes, the big divas.” She also points to a clue about Bette Midler. “She wrote a song for this lady, ‘Something Your Heart Has Been Telling Me,’ and I kind of feel like the voice is so familiar to me. I’m going to say Roberta Flack,” she says. Thicke is going a different route with the Supremes clue as well as looking at a gold wedding band clue.
